World Music Corner...some hot Latin grooves to warm your coils, let the music do the talking!!
I've recently been listening to bit of Quantic of late, my interest rekindled by a fantastic best of mix by Hip Hop DJ, J-Rocc, to celebrate 10 years of the prolific British DJ and producer. Will Holland (aka Quantic), originally from Worcestershire and now based in Colombia, infuses elements of Latin jazz, soul, funk and hip hop, which is basically right up my street. This is a fabulous tune, taken from the album 'Tradition In Transition' featuring Panamanian singer, Kabir Malik Green. I can just feel the heat, caked in dust, sweating in a bar in panama city, ceiling fans blowing whatever hot air there is, ubiquitous Panama Hat and drinking the local beer.

Though only scratching the surface, I'm quite a fan of 'Latin' music, probably simply due to the fact it evokes warmth and that temporary escapism (preferably to a tropical island and not somewhere in a middle of a revolucion). I guess it must have started with my crush on Jennifer Grey, Meringue-ing with watermelons watching the movie Dirty Dancing as a hormonal teenager and it was onwards and upwards from there albeit minus the moves. As well as several solo albums spanning his career, it's Quantic's projects playing with various musicians I find captivating. Thanks to the 'world music' magazine, Songlines, I bought a couple of his albums through the strength of these two tracks and I wasn't disappointed, the aforementioned 'Tradition In Transition' and Latin dub album, 'Dog With A Rope', showing an experimental side and which is described as Tropical Horns on Reggae Rhythms (see below). Perfecto!

DJ J-Rocc's Quantic mix, it's free, fantastic and is the perfect starting point to get in to him. It was the catalyst for me to get into his back catalogue. Ooh!Download it here.

Tulis commentsWorcestershire to Colombia...that's quite a step. I wonder if Bogota reminds him of KIdderminster or Stourbridge? Ha! Anyway, nice sound. Reminds me of nights spent listening to Gilles Peterson's radio show - yes, that's the closest I've ever got to the steamy heat of South America. Particular enjoyed the reggae groove of 'Dog with a Rope'.
ReplyHi SB, Gilles Peterson's great for Latin Music, he introduced me to all types notably some great modern Cuban Sounds. It certainly is a dramatic move but if it inspires you to write material like 'Dog with a Rope' then it's a good one. You'd have to be seriously imaginative to do the same from scorching Kidderminster!!
ReplyNever heard this before - Latin music sounds so good!!!!
ReplyBoth excellent, particulary liked the Dog with a Rope one
ReplyI love both, the spicy full band number and the reggae inspired one. Latin music has the ability to make me smile and want to dance(badly). Thanks, I will be looking into Quantic more in the coming cold months!
ReplyDownload the mix, I think you'll like it and as I said a good introduction.
