DYLAN COVERS # 102 Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark - You Ain't Going Nowhere/Knocking on Heavens Door

Clarky and Bobby share the Mike!

ROGER McGUINN and GENE CLARK - You Ain't Going Nowhere

Here are two tracks from a Concert by Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. It was recorded on the 1978-03-19 at the The Bottom Line, Late Show, New York, NY. and is taken from a WNEW-FM Broadcast. Definately worth a listen and the quality is excellent. Enjoy all you Byrds fans out there.

The Concert was advertised  as “An Acoustic Reunion,” it was the first public appearance of Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark in more than a decade and it was hoped that this would spark a full Byrds reunion.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Gene Clark/Phil Ochs - Changes

MIDWEEK CRISIS you need a change, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we've got an ex Byrd, a singing journalist and an angry young Dylan
I ain't marching anymore!

GENE CLARK - Changes

I first heard this song on a sampler included with the price of a music magazine (not free with the magazine, the word free always annoyed me) It was sung by Gene Clark, one of the original Byrds. I loved the song and when I found it was written by Phil Ochs I just had to get hold of that version. I was very aware of PO since the early sixties when I heard Joan Baez's version of his There but for Fortune an absolutely magnificent song.

PO is quite an interesting character and was a contemporary of Dylan and I have always thought there was undercurrents in the books about Dylan that he considered that PO was something of a threat to his  numero uno  position in his folk writing sphere. There was even a documented occurrence when Dylan apparently threw Ochs out of a limousine.

Some of the titles of Phil Ochs albums are worth buying just for their title : All the news thats fit to sing,  I Ain't marching anymore, Rehearsals for Retirement.

Sadly PO took his own life in 1975.

Of the two versions, I have to go for the original, what's your favourite?

DYLAN COVERS #42 - Cher - I threw it all Away/Tonight I'l be staying here with You/Lay Baby Lay

Dylan in sonny disposition

CHER - I Threw it all away

CHER - Tonight I'll be staying here with you

CHER - Lay Baby Lay

Here are a three of tracks by Cher from an album called  '3614 Jackson Highway' (1969).  I loved all the Dylan covers by Sonny & Cher in their early albums together. They managed to capture that great jingly jangle sound and it is worthwhile getting hold of the album 'The Best of the Imperial Recordings 1965-1968' which contains all these early Dylan covers in their remastered form. Cher's version of 'All I really want to do' is even better than the Byrds version (in my opinion only). I remember it so well both of them being in the top 10 at the same time.  Great stuff! great times!

These 3 tracks featured are all from Dylan's Nashville Skyline album and are not as well know as her earlier stuff.  I think however they are worth hearing and pretty good interpretations.
