TRACKS OF THE WEEK 01/03/2015 - Otis Taylor, Public Service Broadcasting, Leon Bridges

Three tracks that St David would approve of...

Old Pa's Corner :-
Otis Taylor - Hey Joe (2015)

If you have 16 minutes to spare this Sunday just get these Cans out, sit back and close your eyes or even better watch the the fantastic video. Get lost in this fantastic live take of Hey Joe by Otis Taylor. Absolutely brilliant and as for the violinist. Vanessa Mae eat your skis.
The Studio takes 1 & 2 are on his new album out on Monday and is called Hey Joe Opus Red Meat (2015)

Public Service Broadcasting - 'The Other Side' (2015)

I love space shit so I may be biased.
I recently took my son to Science museum during half term. It was heinously busy and we could hardly see any of the exhibits, particularly the section on space. But we did see an IMAX film on the Apollo 11 moon landing which was a definite hit for father and son alike. How they got that tin can covered in foil up to the moon, I'll never know. So it was all fresh in the mind when I heard this superb track from Public Service Broadcasting. I love what these guys do, creating a story by splicing old news reel tapes to music, it's unusual and innovative and 'The Other Side' is no different. It's about the Apollo 8 which was the first manned spacecraft to leave Earth orbit, reach the moon, orbit it and return safely. I was absolutely riveted listening to the radio conversation between Houston and the astronauts, the tension is palpable and I defy you not to feel anxious when the comms go dark as they go behind the moon. I got goosebumps imagining what it must have been like listening to that for the first time, back in December 68'. 'The Other Side' is taken from Public Service Broadcasting's 2nd album proper, The Race For Space, out last month.

SFW:-
Leon Bridges - Better man (2015)

Since hearing this I have been having a classic soul revival. Leon Bridges is a 27-year old from Texas and his music sounds like a modern day Sam Cooke. Produced by Austin Jenkins and Josh Block of White Denim, it has the feel of a 60s timeless classic. This boy got soul!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 23/11/2014 - Gianna Lauren, Kindness, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Public Service Broadcasting

Four Tracks that diverted the Polar Vortex!

Flycasual:-
Kindness - 'This Is Not About Us' (2014)

I've been meaning to post this gem for awhile now but for some reason I kept it on the back burner, possibly in case of a Polar Vortex. With a great sentiment and an unmistakable retro 80's feel to it (just check out the video), it transported me back to days of stone washed jeans and neon spandex, albeit briefly. I also love the fact the song borrowed the beat from the Run DMC classic, 'Peter Piper', strong work there Kindness. 'This Is Not About Us', is taken from Adam Bainbridge aka Kindness' second album, Otherness released last month (October).

Old Pa's Corner:-
Brian Wilson - Wanderlust (2014)
Bob Dylan - Things we said (2014)

The new double set of Paul McCartney songs is rather ambitious and is bound to be full of great moments and lots of duds. It is full of some of the best artists that have ever been, all doing a song written by Sir Paul. I have chosen two by the OLD GUARD which are both fabulous. Brian is at his very harmonious best and. what else would you expect from Dylan's backing band . Even Bobby's vocals are pretty good too. Great stuff!

Shell Hunter:-
Public Service Broadcasting - 'Gagarin' (2014)

The fabulous upcycling duo have caught my attention with this latest single based around the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, who was the first man to enter outer space and orbit the Earth back in 1961. Now this especially ticks lots of boxes in my world, I am a wannabe space cadet. The video is another tick, a lot a suave dance moves and of course the song itself is fun-kay with a capital F. I'm pleased these guys have proved themselves as more than a novelty act as was initially thought. It is definitely worth seeing them too, they put on a good show. It looks like they've hit the Blackpool Tower of concert venues next year for me, they are due to play the Camden Roundhouse! Well done lads, you will be performing amongst the stars!

Sfw:-
Gianna Lauren - Anchor Down (2014)

I am sad.  I missed this a few months ago and was gutted to know that if I picked it up first time round, I would have been able to see her live in Cardiff.  Gianna Lauren originally hails from Alberta and Ontario but now calls Hallifax, Nova Scotia her home.  Anchor Down is infectious, melodic and has a slinky guitar melody that leaves you in a tiz.  A real grower!

GUEST SPOT BEST OF 2012 - 'Brian'

In the essence of our blog, we asked a few friends and blogs we follow to share with us their top tracks of the year. We are always interested in what makes people musically tick and hear the stories associated with them. At the same time maybe learn a thing or to or maybe catch something we've missed. So a big thank you to you all for taking the time to contribute.

Thanks to Brian for a very colourful contribution! I have him to thank for sharing PSB to me which I featured on our TOTW. What a revelation! Come on Brian, tell us a story......
Would I like to select my top three tracks of 2012 and write a few words asked Shell Hunter, no problemo, two tracks came immediately to mind, however, I have since dismissed one for Alt (sic) the wrong reasons. Firstly triangles ∆ are not my favourite shape, I prefer the more macho dodecahedron, secondly a Mac is a fabulously powerful piece of kit and to sit around pressing AltJ ∆ is a terrible waste of it’s limitless potential ∆. Mac is also the name of my totally hopeless and spineless boss so, to have the luxury of three guns of which only one goes off and still misses the target I so want it to hit is such an anticlimax that the song has to be dismissed ∆.
My next dilemma occurred when checking the release dates on the stuff I’ve been listening to, the realization of living in the past suddenly hit me, some of the tunes I’ve been really enjoying this year are positively ancient, but, despite the all too frequent senior moments and the, ahem, middle age spreading wherever it wants to, this significantly assisted me by narrowing the scope of my choices.

Public Service Broadcasting - 'Spitfire'

So my three tracks of 2012, in no particular order are Spitfire by Public Service Broadcasting, great track from the War Room E.P.  R.J. Mitchell would be proud to associate this great track with his iconic machine.

Show Of Hands - 'Company Town'

Second track is by Show of Hands a band I somehow keep missing on their numerous tours, Company Town from the album Wake The Union, ticks most boxes for me, fantastic musicianship, great vocals from Steve Knightley, and I adore Phil Beer’s haunting, melancholy fiddle pulling everything together.

Jack Savoretti - 'Knock Knock'

Finally, Knock Knock by Jack Savoretti. I was lucky enough to catch Jack and his band at the Guildford Boiler Room earlier this year before they set off around Europe supporting Jake Bugg then back to the Royal Albert Hall supporting Jools and his Big Band. Great voice, especially live, great songwriter and a great gig, looking forward to hearing lots more from Jack.
So to finish have a wonderful and most importantly safe Christmas and a Peaceful, Happy, Prosperous and Musical New Year. Wherever you are on New Years Eve…….Let’s Tessellate ∆

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 30/09/2012 - Tickle Torture, Public Service Broadcasting, P45, Hudson Taylor,

Four tracks that rocked our socks this week! Let us know what yours were!

Shell Hunter:-
Public Service Broadcasting - 'Spitfire' (2012)

I was just discussing new music with one of my collegaues as I often do, and he said he hasn't been able to stop listening to the EP from Public Service Broadcasting. I admitted I hadn't heard of them so we sat together and checked them out on Spotify and Youtube (youv'e got to love the instant accessiblity of modern technology). I checked out their website and read they sample old public information films and archive footage attempting to "teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future". I was instantly transfixed by the 80s electro sounds and immense guitar hook along with the grainy layers of radio recordings. The London duo have been hailed by both BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio 2 and I can't wait to listen to the rest of the 'The War Room'. It's refreshing to hear the toffy Brit's commentary put to some real catchy riffs and it reminds me of Primal Scream in places. They are touring the UK at the moment and I fully intend to catch them at XOYO on 27th November. Hit their website for full listings on www.publicservicebroadcasting.net

Sfw:-
Hudson Taylor - 'Drop of Smoke' (2012)

These two young chaps are Dublin brothers Harry and Alfie Hudson-Taylor, aka Hudson Taylor.
This track was a iTunes free single of the week and they've recently released their debut ep Battles.
Melodic Folk/pop at its best!

Old Pa's Corner :-
P45 - Cold Shivers (2012)

Here is an interesting one, another Ska influenced band P45 (we've all had one of them) is a bit reminiscent of UB40 in the choice of name but we can forgive all that as this little piece is red red hot. Not sure what it is all about mind you, but there is a green eyed cat in there and that is fine with me. They are definitely one to watch and will have an album out next year. Bring it on! Miaow!

Flycasual:-
Tickle Torture - 'Forgotten' (2012)

Instead of shuffling into work on an early shift like an extra from the Walking Dead, I found myself getting my sleaze on by slinking in with a 'Pimp Limp'. This, as a result of listening to Tickle Torture's EP, 'Spiritual Machete' on my way in to work, 6 tracks of tastefully seedy electro pop with elements of Prince sprinkled in there for good measure. 'Forgotten' is my particular highlight with it's distorted synths and buzzsaw bassline, the vocals at the beginning even reminding me of MJ's 'Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough' and that's coo' with me!

Tickle Torture is Elliot Kozel, a beat maker hailing out of Minneapolis with a bright future fo sho'. Get your info on the man and download the album here....
