I have been listening to the Live at Carnegie Hall album quite a bit recently and it captures RA at his acoustic best.  This is version of Nobody Girl, which featured on 1999's Gold and was recorded at Carnegie Hall last year. There is no point explaining how I used to download bootleg recordings of hearing different versions of his material, because that is fairly obvious, right, we'll this captures perfectly my reasoning.  If you are not an avid listener, do yourself a favour and get hold of the 10 track version, (the other is a 6 x LP version).  I once read that listening to Adams is the equivalent of "giving your sadness a spa day".  If that is true, why does he always leave me with a grin?

Cheer up London! What a bloody racket!!

Sfw featured the Tonbridge Wells duo at the turn of the year and they've slowly but surely become one of my favourite bands. In fact they're probably one of the best UK bands around. I was fortunate enough to catch a bit of their Latitude set last year with 'White Knuckle Ride' very much a highlight. So with sold out gigs, a busy festival circuit and a growing fan base, they'll be household names in no time, no bovver! They've even blown the budget on the above video. 'Cheer Up London' is taken from the band's forthcoming second album, Are You Satisfied.

Ryan Adams - I Do Not Feel Like Being Good (2015)
Ryan Adams has been releasing a number of EPs since last years self-titled album. Some have been great where others haven't been up to the Adams grade. However, this is is bloody good. It was recorded solo-acoustic in a single afternoon and has the feel of Heartbreaker material. It has been released as a 7" single (which interestingly have all sold out) but thankfully is available on spotify for the rest of us!

Warning! Do not listen if you are an old fart! That's pretty much what I was thinking when some young pup put on KissFm on in the office. I like a bit of dance music but some of the stuff that gets the kids wild in clubs is beyond me. Saying that, every now and again a song creeps up and hits me. This track did exactly that and I was happy to say so in the office much to the surprise of my colleagues who I fight with to put on BBC6. Kiesza is a multi talented, Canadian dancer/musician who mainly dabbles in dance, house and electro. I later found out it went in straight at number 1 in the charts back in April, no mean feat in this manufactured pop idol age. It also makes me feel kind of smug that of all the songs that hit me, it was a chart topper!

Finally after what seems like an eternity it's back. The Premier League I mean, and before you ask me what has that got to do with music I'll tell you. Every week on the BBC website, former mustachioed legend Mark Lawrenson predicts the scores of this weeks games and pits his skills against a celeb. This week he is up against Liam, lead singer of Courteeners. As mentioned in a previous post I've been a fan for a while and am pleased to see they have a new album out on August 18th called 'Concrete Love'. This song is bang on form for them and I predict a win for them although they might have to settle for a mid-table finish.

Triangles were top of the pops as my favourite shape for most of 2012 when Alt-J released their debut, An Awesome Wave. They have recently released three quick fire tracks in anticipation of their imminent 2nd album, This Is All Yours, the haunting 'Hunger of the Pine', 'Every Other Freckle' and the official single 'Left Hand Free'. The single is pretty unusual as it doesn't really sound like any of Alt-J's previous stuff (sounds a bit like The Bees to me) nevertheless despite the video looking like a phone ad, it's pretty catchy and had me humming it after a few listens. It may have apparently taken them only 20 minutes to write the song but it also suggests that they have their fingers firmly in different musical pies. So far so good for the difficult second album.

I am excited.  In fact I am frothing at the lips in anticipation of Mr Adams' album release next month.  My Wrecking Ball is more like classic RA.  A catchy hook littered with sadness all rolled up in X. In recent interviews he said that he scrapped an entire album that he recorded with Glyn Johns because it was "to sad".  Don't worry though, you can see here that he still has his dry sense of humour.

Congo Ashanti Roy and Pura Vida - 'Manuel Club' (2014)

This is the new album by Congo Ashanti Roy and Pura Vida and is called Step by Step (2014) and I just love it and I just can't stop playing it. It took me some time just to pass the first 2 tracks and it was a hard choice to choose from those. This is great old school reggae and must be about the best of the gendre around at the moment. Excellent stuff and a must hear.

Pura Vida are a Belgium reggae band and have teamed up with the legend that is Congo Ashanti Roy (Roydell Johnson)  of the fabulous Congos.

Solomon Grey - 'Electric Baby' (2014)

It's less than 2 weeks til Latitude Festival so I'm trying to cram as much listening as I can. Solomon Grey, the electro duo I featured last year has been the latest group I've been listening to. Grouped in the same category as other greats like LCD Soundsytem and Little Dragon, they'll be ones I'm hoping to see on the tiny Alcove stage. This new track with it's hints of the 80s reminds me a little of Tubular Bells. They haven't yet got an album out but have a few EPs out, one if which was commissioned by the tourist board for Ireland. It's called Dathanna or Sounds Of The Wild Atlantic Way and will whisk you away to the far away landscapes of Ireland. You can download it for free on their website www.solomongrey.net.. It's head spinningly good!

Gabriel Sullivan and Taraf de Tucson - 'The Rust, The Knife' (2011)

This week I had the absolute pleasure to meet Howe Gelb at my place of work after telling him how much I liked his work, he told me to check out 2 artists. The first one is Gabriel Sullivan (who Howe Gelb introduced me to) who had opened for Howe on some of his European dates that they were returning home from. During the conversation, I was given the CD of his album 'Gabriel Sullivan &; Taraf de Tucson — None of This Is Mine' and I can tell you on my first play it blew me away. It's difficult to choose a favourite track as they are all winners, but I plumped for this one with it's 'Spaghetti Western' sounds that I could imagine whistling along too whilst driving through the Tucson desert. The album has the Mexican influences that I love from 'Calexico' & 'Mexican Institute of Sound' and his vocals remind me of 'Nick Cave'.

In January this year, he decided to record 1 song per day, which is pretty mind blowing. Check it out here

Ryan Adams - Gimme Somthing Good (2014)
Ryan Adams is back. Gimmee Something Good is his first release since 2011's Ashes and Fire and will appear on his self-titled album which is out in September. With it's bluesy, electric sound it may be sign of more electric material, I guess we'll have to wait and See. I love it!

Don't get stuck in the rut, playing the blame game, that dirty old game! So take heed from these wise words from Mr Clinton Fearon. This is the title track from his excellent album Goodness. There are some real winners on this old school reggae album. I reallly wanted to feature a track called Shadow and it is worth seeking out.  Top stuff!

I've been hard pressed to find anything by Ryan Adams in the last few years.  So this recent performance at the Code Conference, of the Pointer Sisters "Neutron Dance" has whet my appetite for more.  He'll be playing the Newport Folk Festival in July, followed by a few other gigs.  So hopefully after that, the internet will then be awash with new material - I cannot wait.

Ryan Adams - Jacksonville Skyline

It seems an eternity since David Ryan Adams has released anything.  I know he has been busy, producing a Ethan Johns album, Producing and drumming on a new Lemonheads album, recording material with Deadmau5 and a plethora of other things.  So it's great to hear his announcement that he is releasing a new single called "Gimme Something Good". The 7″ was up for pre-order now at Adams’s Pax-Am site, and is set to include a B-side called “Aching For More.” 

In anticipation i've put up this Whiskeytown classic which he played acoustic on the David Letterman show back in 2011.  Bloody brilliant.

Broken Bells - 'Holding On For Life' (2013)

 

I heard this last night on my drive home whilst listening to XFM's Import/Export which is like a battle of the top tracks in London vs L.A. I had to turn it up becasue I was confused as to why XFM were playing The Bee Gees! I then found out the american indie duo is made up by Brian Burton, better known as Danger Mouse and lead guitarist/vocalist James Mercer from The Shins. Their second album After The Disco is due out early next year and if this is anything to go by, I shall be donning  some tight white slacks and swaying side to side 70s style at my xmas party next week! You can't beat a bit of indie disco!

I've been captivated by this song and just cannot stop listening to it.  It's the sort of song that makes you fall in love music and dare I say it, makes the world a better place.

The song features on the soundtrack for the Ben Stiller movie, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and was penned by Ryan Adams, other contributions on the soundtrack include Junip, Jack Johnson, Of Monsters and Men and a version on David Bowie's, "Space Oddity", that features vocals by Kristen Wig.

I'm a long term fan of Mathangi Arulpragasam, when I first heard 'Galang' back in 2005 I was blown away. It was glorious musical chaos, much in the same vain as the likes of Public Enemy or the Chemical Brothers. Not short on controversy, she's a fierce female role model (her words are her armour apparently), innovative, she pissed off the Yanks at the Super Bowl and she hails from Hounslow, reprazent!! (I was unfortunate to live there). I look forward to every release but bar, 'Bad Girls', which was a great track, I found the singles from the new album, Matangi, disappointing. So I approached the album with a degree trepidation and found it to be a little disjointed, however there are some very good moments on it, notably the Dhol beat driven, 'Matangi', which goes someway to recapturing that form that made her so unique in the first place.

The Nightwatchman - 'Which Side Are You On?' (2011)

I was clearing up an old hard drive recently and came across a playlist that I had downloaded a couple of years ago. On it was this gem which came out in 2011, on The Nightwatchman's 3rd album 'Union Town'. The Nightwatchman is none other than Tom Morello, the awesome guitarist of Rage Against The Machine & Audioslave amongst many others. However as soon as you hear this, you realise how different the style is to his previous works. He keeps his political views in the songs, but in a manner which you could find your granny not frowning to and instead of saying something along the lines of 'Music ??? That's not music' or 'They certainly don't write them like they use to' she might actually enjoy it.
This is a cover of a song written in the 1930's which has been covered by a number of artists including Natalie Merchant & Deacon Blue. I'm sure Old Pa will be able to share with us all which song by Bob Dylan this was referenced in..... If he can't, then answers on a postcode to the usual address

The Leisure Society - A Softer Voice Takes Longer Hearing (2013)

I have not had much time to listen to new music this week but while trying to compile my Best Twenty for the Year. I came across this little Gem by the Leisure Society taken from their album  Alone Aboard The Ark (2013).

I had forgotten about this one and even although it is from around April time, it is definitely one to share and has gone straight into my Best Twenty of the Year.

Is there anything that this man cannot do? Over the last 15 years he has produced, mixed and played on a plethora of albums that include Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Kings Of Leon, Counting Crows, Laura Marling (the list goes on) and is part of a musical dynasty that have worked on some of the most revered albums of the last 50 years.  Glyn Johns (father) has produced albums for artists such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Who (etc) and Andy Johns (uncle) has produced for Led Zeppelins, Rolling Stones and Free. (the list goes on and on)

He's a musical hero of mine and I'm gutted that I missed his recent tour.  But then again is it a good idea to meet your heroes?  A previous time I met one of my favourite Singer/Songwriters, all I could say when asked what I thought of their performance was, "Tidy".  Who the hell says "Tidy?"

This track features on Ryans Love is Hell album and was written about English songstress Beth Orton, for whom he dated.  Marianne Faithfull provides the backing vocals on the album version.

I've always liked the song, but I had never really trawled through the lyrics until I was figuring it out on the guitar and then I realised how much of carnage that this relationship had left.

The lyrics make subtle reference to her, ("Norfolk" - she was born there, "Bethany", "daybreaker" - her album) and he undeniably held a torch for her after they split. If you know the song, it does reveal it in a new light.

He prophetically wrote the song, "This One's Gonna Bruise" and sang backing vocals on "Concrete Sky" - on the 'Daybreaker' album...

...English girls can be so mean

Mississippi/Po'Boy' is from a concert at 'The Blue Note, Columbia Missouri' and here is the set list from that concert.  Ryan sings Mississipi in a Dylan impersonation here and the few seconds of Po' Boy just sounds like a drunken ramble. You would have to be a real fan to like this, but it is all I can find,  Does anybody know of any other Dylan Covers by RA?

Isis/Love Sick was taken from a Dylan Tribute Concert on the  Nov 9, 2006, Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Centre, New York)  click for set list and review of the concert. There is also a link to a You Tube video of Ryan and the Cardinals playing this jam. Beware, the quality is a bit ropey, even worse than the above take, but if you are a RA fan, well you will have to go for it, won't you.  I will say, I would like to hear a better quality version of this. Get into the studio Ryan and do some Dylan covers for all us fans. Go on, I dare you.

I recently picked up the Ryan Adams iTunes session and noticed that Houses on the Hill was included. This  song was originally performed by Ryan's band Whiskeytown and featured on their 1997 album Strangers Almanac. I was always a fan of the original, however, I never really "listened" to lyrics before.  This acoustic version just seems to take it to another level.

Sunday 29th of January saw the 70th anniversary of Desert Island Discs, the famous BBC4 radio show where a weekly castaway would pick their favourite songs and explain the reason for their choices. It is very much an inspiration for this blog as in essence, it's why we created it, in order to recount the associations and memories about the music which we hold so dear to our lives. So in tribute and to keep up with this tradition, we've put our necks on the line and chosen an album each to keep us company, hopefully along with a volleyball called Wilson.

The Bees - 'Free The Bees' (2004)

I thought the best way to choose my DID was the Family Fortunes method of shouting out the first thing that comes into my head (no not turkey) in a loud and panicked fashion! I knew I loved The Bees but I thought my innermost subconscious would throw out something from childhood or teenagehood. I was recommended The Bees first album by a trusted source (Thanks Flycasual) when I was 21 and you can even read about it here. I instantly fell in love with their eclectic mix of styles and eagerly anticipated the release of their second album 'Free The Bees'. It became an album rife with memories.

"These Are The Ghosts" (probably my song of all time) brings me back to hot balmy evenings in Spain with my parents enjoying all night barbeques, "Wash In The Rain" always reminds me of sing-along duets with my husband on car journeys(he's got salt, I've got pepper), not to mention my Holy Grail of finding a suitably unique and sentimental song for my wedding with "I Love You". The Bees are full of surprises covering a vast array of genres and 'Free The Bees' would be a great place to start if you like what you hear. I recommend seeing them live too if you are ever given the chance!

It's the question we all dread the most, "what one album would you take on a desert island"? There are so many to choose from to while away the time, sipping coconut milk waiting for a passing ferry but like Shell Hunter said, it was the first album that came into my head. Not their best (that is Paul's Boutique of course, read a post here) but from start to finish it's a complete album, well put together with contrasting styles, a heady, eclectic mix of Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul, Punk and Funk, with the trademark witty Beastie rhymes and some instrumental numbers thrown in for good measure. I remember I was a young and spunky 17 year old learning to fly, my parents had left/trusted/were crazy to leave me on my own with a friend in the UK to study whilst they remained in Saudi Arabia. The independence was great but tough as in order to buy the new album I had to make some sacrifices along the way, like going without food or more drastically, buying nasty Superkings instead of my usual Marlboros. But it was worth it, skipping into my local record store at the end of the week to buy the tape, I wasn't disappointed (I also went to see them in concert, in Kentish town I think, supporting Henry Rollins. Fabulous!) Memories aside, the diversity of the tunes on the album were able to capture any mood with enough change of pace should the need arise to entertain the island natives in case of a surprise appearance. It was a fantastic companion then and would make a fantastic companion now.

Love - Forever Changes (1967)

How do you pick your favourite album it is almost impossible, but Love's 'Forever Changes' has been a favourite with me now for over 40 years and I love it now as much as I did the first time I heard it . I always at some stage return to it.  When I am down it always lifts me up and it is always a listening experience to hear it all in its full entirety. Every one is a winner from the first song 'Alone Again Or' to the last 'You Set the Scene' (see earlier post) which always leaves me breathless. It was a tough choice with 'Blonde on Blonde' and 'Highway 61' by Dylan and 'Astral Weeks' by Van Morrison all very very very close indeed.

Choosing your favourite album of all time shouldn't be the stressful exercise that it is. Think about it, choosing music shouldn't be such a dilemma, it should be enjoyable. Though the reality is it's probably like picking a favourite child! So looking at my "family portraits" there's, Pearl Jams "Ten", The Beatles "Sgt. Peppers...", Bon Iver "For Emma..", Jeff Buckley's "Grace" & Raidohead's "OK Computer" and all of which could easily be on my fav list, but I'm going to have to go for Ryan Adams "Heartbreaker".

When I heard this for the first time it was like having a revelation, it knocked me for six. How could someone so young (he was 25) write something so honest and so damn good! It was Happy, Sad, Fast & Slow and from that point put Americana/Alt-Country as my favourite musical genre. From it's opening of Ryan & David Rawlings arguing about Morrissey, to the rousing "To be young..", it changed everything for me. He's written some fantastic albums since, but I often go back to his first and it sounds as good now as it did then!

Being a huge Ryan Adams fan and also a fan of metal, I love this cover! I was first alerted to this a few months ago when he played it on BBC Radio 2 (August 2011) however I hadn't seen any footage of it....but I found this a few days ago and had to "share the shred" with you.

It is great to see him playing material that he clearly loves - I've seen him a few times live and he'd often talk about his love of metal - often with some of the audience not knowing if he was taking the p&ss or not. But as you can see with this Maiden version & his recent cover of RATT's "Round & Round" (find it here on Electric Mustache) he's back in love with music - and this makes me very happy!

When Flycasual & I first started this blog back in March it was to recreate the 'listening' sessions of our past - we'd have a few beers and play a sort of Musical roulette, one of us would play 3 tracks, then another 3, then another 3, whilst catching up, we'd often find ourselves stopping the conversation and asking "What is this great track?", as you can imagine those boozing sessions would often go on far too long and the musical discoveries would often get lost within the hangovers.

Tune Doctor gave us an outlet to continue this  tradition - but allowed us to share & remember it!

However, when Old Pa & Shell Hunter joined, it didn't just continue the memory, it enhanced it - it gave us a wider range of musical discoveries, some would appeal, some wouldn't, but importantly, it wasn't the score, it was the taking part.

Our Guest spot has become the icing on the cake. When someone says "...you have to listen to this track, because....", I'll listen to it over and over and see if I can get a glimmer of why that song has tattooed itself onto that individual or it could be just how a particular song reminds us of someone, a situation, or a place...we all have them, let us know!

Finally this a thank you to Flycasual, Old Pa, Shell Hunter, our Guest Spot writers & finally the many people who have read or commented on the blog.....as the internet can be a lonely place!

Bob Dylan - The Love that Faded

This is a track from the new album of original Hank Williams songs which have never seen the light of day until now. The project was given to Dylan and he, along with some friends put music to the words and made this excellent recording. There are some great names involved, just look at the Cover! Dylan sticks closely to the Hank sound of a simple country tune with Pedal Steel Guitar and fiddle (the blueprint for country music). Two Country tracks in two weeks, am I type casting myself I ask?

DJ Shadow - 'I've Been Tryin' (2011)

This track is probably my favourite from DJ Shadow's new album, The Less You Know the Better. I'm a fan of DJ Shadow from way back in his Mo' Wax days but I found out that this track was released a year ago as a freebie,  oops, some fan then! What I love about Shadow is that although his roots are hip hop, his crate digging skills enable him to find those rare blues/soul gems and mix them up in that electronic/hip hop style unique to him. Eclectic and diverse as this excellent track clearly shows.

Future Islands - Balance (2011)

Today is a good day. Yesterday I brought home my brand new car so it was the first time I had the chance to put my foot down(to within the maximum safe speed limit guv, honest). In the words of Ferris Bueller "I love driving it, it is so choice!" The best thing is, I finally have an iPod dock so I can indulge in as many driving playlists as I can stomach! The first track I will be blaring out loud is this short and sweet synthpop number. With its base guitar heavy intro, it reminded me of Pulp's 'Do you remember the first time' and envelops me with the same lovely wave of goosebumps. These guys have been around since 2006 but Balance is the first song I've had the pleasure of hearing. There latest album 'On the water' is out on 11th. Can't wait!

This track from Ryans new album Ashes & Fire perfectly captures the genius of the man. Now his head is in a "better place", it seems that (some of) his critics are now on board, giving positive reviews and he seems to be getting quite a bit of exposure.  All of which, leaves his fans (i.e. me) with a smile on their chops!
