NEIL DIAMOND - Make You feel My love (2008)

This is a fabulous take on what has become the X-Factor's  favourite song. I even think it is better than Adele's version, which is not too shabby either. I just hope that Cliff Richard does not jump on the band waggon and releases a cover for his 96th Christmas attempt for a number one.

It comes from Neil's  Home Before Dark (deluxe Edition) (2008) album, where he attempts to do his Johnny Cash thing with Rick Rubin. It is not a bad album at all.

The Second cover is a pretty boring live take from the album set Stages (2003) Live recordings between 1970 and 2002.

JONI MICHELL - It's All Over Now Baby Blue (demo)

Here are three delicious covers by Joni Mitchell, the first is a demo version of It's all over now Baby Blue and can be found on the Complete Geffen Recordings Box Set (2003). It was recorded as part of the Night Ride Home (1991) Sessions.

In the second cover by Joni, she is joined by James Taylor, it was recorded  on the 16th Oct 1970 at a Benefit concert for Greenpeace. The Concert was organised by Joni and Phil Ochs and James Taylor was a surprise guest. I believe there is a CD around of the concert.

Here is the second side of  'The Freewheelin'  covered, to celebrate #100 'Dylan Covers'

JOHNNY CASH - Don't think twice its Alright

Yet another classic, I have gone for this version by Johnny Cash recorded at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival a year before the historical electric entrance by Dylan. Johnny gets the nod due to his close assosiation with Bob during the sixties.

MARTIN CARTHY - Bob Dylan's Dream

There are several good versions of this fabulous song of nostagia. But I just had to go for Martin Carthy who had I suppose, had as much a contibution as anybody on the many brilliant songs which had been the result of Dylan's vist to the U.K. in 1962. Martin had taught Bob many of the old traditional British ballads.

Dylan adapted these traditional tunes in his own way to be the classics they are recognised now to be. Some might say he copied the tunes. I say he he used what was available and what had been his influences to come up with somthing magic and wonderful. What do you think?.

This is another track from that superb 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - A Folk Tribute concert, highlighted in side 1 . I have also taken, Talkin World 3 Blues and I Shall be Free from that same concert. These are about the best I can find of these rarely covered songs

  RICHIE HAVENS - Oxford Town

Here is another song which is not covered too often. I like this take by the great late Mr Richie Havens. It can be found on his album My Own Way.

This is a nice cover by the Bard and again from the fabulous Freewheelin' Concert. I wish I was there. It sounded like a great evening.

MUDDY WATERS - Corrina Corrina

This is an old traditional song which Dylan adapted and I have gone for a Muddy Waters live rendition. Take it Muddy. 


HENRY THOMAS - Honey, just (won't you) allow me one more Chance (1928)

I choose this as really it does not take too much to work out where Bob got the idea from. OK he changed the title around a bit and added some more lyrics but basically the song is much the same. Old Henry gets the nod!

RAB NOAKES - I shall be free

This is an excellent version by one of my old folk day heroes Rab Noakes, he is accompanied by another folk ledgend Fraser Spiers who plays harmonica.  For a great Rab rendition of Mississippi  just click.

THURSDAY I'M IN LOVE....A CHANCE TO WALK THE LINE WITH SOME OF MY FAVOURITE TRACKS!

U2 feat Johnny Cash - 'The Wanderer' (1993)

This is probably one of my all time favourite songs from it's simple bassline, Johnny Cash's brilliant voice and narration, it just builds and builds to Bono's 'aah-woo's' at the end, it get's me everytime in what is also a fitting finale to the excellent Zooropa. Each time I hear it I just stop what I'm doing, the hairs stand up at the back of my neck and I just listen, captivated by the story of a lost soul trying to find his way/God with only the thought of a loved one to help him through. It's a bit of an emotional song for me as I was a little lost myself, it mirrored the sadness I felt at the time when I returned to live in the UK after 10 years in Saudi Arabia.

I'm just going for a walk love, be back for tea...

For Johnny Cash, The Wanderer can almost be perceived as autobiographical in nature, reflecting a man coming to terms with his history of drugs and alcohol, which makes it all the more poignant. Magnificent.

JOHNNY CASH & WAYLON JENNINGS - One too Many Mornings
            
One too Many Mornings from the 'Times they are a Changin' album is not one of the most covered Dylan songs, but it is just great to hear two of 'the Outlaws' singing this duet. What fantastic voices they both have, I bet they sure must have lived a million miles between them.

I never really worked out what the song was about, until I read a quote:

"It's the sound of someone too smitten by love to harbor regrets, grown too independent to consider a reunion"

I suppose that sounds about right and we will leave it at that. Shame really, I thought it could be about going to Pat's Bar for a last 'one' on the way home and getting seriously  pissed and suffering the next day. It goes to show, what do I know? and that you don't have to be an 'intellectual' to appreciate Dylan .
