TRACKS OF THE WEEK 15/02/2015 - Mark Ronson ft Kevin Parker, Josh Rouse, JD McPherson, Hot Chip

Four tracks that tickled our fancy..

Flycasual:-
Mark Ronson - 'Daffodils' ft Kevin Parker (2014)

'Uptown Funk' finally managed to wear me down, pretty hard when it's the number one requested track at home and the rest of the country for that matter. Despite it sounding a bit like James Brown's hideous, 'Living in America' and all the other awful funk the 80's had to offer (maybe that's the whole point). I can't help but love it. I do think Bruno Mars and his band are pretty tight too. I'm a fan of Mark Ronson (especially when he was predominately a Hip Hop DJ) and would have checked our his new album, Uptown Special, anyway. There are some very good moments but for me the space funk of Daffodils, featuring Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, stood out. It has spring connotations after all.....daffodils...trumpeting the arrival of spring.

SFW:-
Josh Rouse - Some days I'm Golden All Night (2015)

Josh Rouse has been one of my favourite singer/songwriters for a number of years.  However, unlike his peers such as Ryan Adams / Conor Oberst, he still hasn't had the commercial breakthrough and credit that his fans think he deserves.  Instead, he now lives near Valencia, Spain, enjoying the sun, sea and sangrias. It is a world away from his native Nebraska, but something he enjoys.  His new LP, The Embers of Time, is out April 7th and it contains some of his best work to date.  Give him a go and you'll be converted!

Old Pa's Corner:-
JD McPherson - Let The good times Roll (2015)

JD is new to me and this is a track from his new album of the same name as this track. This one 'chugs' along very nicely thank you and is enough to tell myself to check out the album and check out JD himself.

Shell Hunter:-
Hot Chip - 'Huarache Lights' (2015)

Boom! First Calexico, now Hot Chip! My two perennial faves have released singles in the build up to new albums coming out later this year. I saw this on the BBC6 playlist and got the sort of excitement that a kid experiences when they inadvertently come across their hidden Christmas presents. Maybe a bit excessive, but I just love these guys and what they do. Wondering what the hell the title meant, I found out Huarache Lights is actually the name of a new pair of Nike trainers out that bring back an old skool 90s style. I had a look and they're okay, not worth the price tag in my book! Luckily, I don't feel the same way about the track! It's toe tappingly catchy and more than definitely a grower, bring on the album Why Make Sense? which is out May 18th!

Shell Hunter's - Best 5 of 2014

2014 - ANOTHER GREAT YEAR OF MUSIC

We knew it was going to be tough but its the annual task we must complete. My criteria was simple, if I love it now as much as when it first hit, it made the cut. Here are my prestigious Top 5 followed by the meticulously chosen Top 20. These songs will be frozen in time, forever shaping our memory of 2014 when we look back and listen. Farewell to those that we had to let go, and cheers to the next batch in 2015!!

Boy and Bear - 'Southern Sun'

I got an email from Spotify last week which said, "What was your most listened to song of 2014?" Oooo, I thought, I wonder if this will be any reflection on my Track Of The Year? There it was in black and white, Boy and Bear - Southern Sun. I couldn't argue with that, it really is my favourite song of 2014. I absolutely adore the feel it has, full of warm nostalgia of summer days. If only you could just bottle that!

Future Islands - 'Seasons (Waiting On You)'

I was thrilled to hear my favourite band of 2011 were back with a new album. This track is a real grower and a perfect insight to the Future Islands' unique style. I am privileged to have seen them up close and personal a couple of times (including this year's Latitude), even buying a tshirt and having a chat with the singer Sam who brings raw dramatic emotion by the bucket load. A must see if you get a chance!

Hot Chip vs. William Onyeabor - 'Atomic Bomb'

The original version of this song really is the epitome of this year for me. It surrounds the whole of the Latitude weekend. The day before, picking up Old Pa, driving to Suffolk listening to our Latitude playlist and seeing the whole project jovially performing it on the Sunday morning. It and other songs on the album are absolutely nuts but what a great sound! Having Hot Chip giving it the treatment is the cherry (bomb) on the cake! Boom!

Jungle - 'Busy Earnin'

I have to give Flycasual schnapps for this one, he raved about Jungle all year and he couldn't have been more right. They have a totally fresh sound. I have never seen a harder working group live on stage, they were mind blowing. In the BBC6 tent at Latitude they started off with the aptly titled The Heat and did not stop. So much enthusiasm, energy and they were so tight, it was if they were one big organism. It was worth suffering the sweltering heat to see this soultastic group. I have every confidence they will keep knocking out fantastic funk filled tunes.

Arctic Monkeys - 'Snap Out Of It'

It was very hard choosing track 5 but I had to have a bit of the 'Monkeys. They just keep doing it. I like pretty much every song they've released but there is something about this one. I cant help singing along. The clever lyrics just roll off the tongue. Its good fun and I always enjoy the observant take on relationships their songs come out with. "There is no way she could have moved on, its obviously a phase. Snap out of it." We've all been there bruv!

OLD PA's - Best 5 of 2014

2014
A great year for Music, so many contenders, now let the music speak :

Like a few others before, you just knew!.....now guys, how do you follow that?

What the 'ell I just like it!

A slow grower, but every time I heard it, I grinned with ear pleasure. I bet she slipped up? Maybe Ray is makin' it with Jane on the Night Shift. Jeremy Kyle lie detector awaits.

William Onyeabor just had to get the nod but with Hot Chip onboard....orgasmic!orgasmic!

When it hits! it bloody well hits!, this was a thunderbolt, I never got tired of it the whole year. Easy!, my track of the year. Tension, Pain and Beauty to a dance beat! One regret!, I missed them at Latitude. Unforgivable Old Pa!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 05/10/14 - Tony Allen & Damon Albarn, Hot Chip, The Fauns, Marianne Faithfull, Kongos

Five spiders that were in the 'house' for us this week!

Sfw:-
The Fauns - 4am (2014)

Whispery vocals with an infectious melody - whats not to like? 4am has been seductively waking me up on my drive to work this week. It perfectly matches the tiredness and dreamlike state that I seem to find myself before the birds get out of bed. The Fauns are from Bristol and have released their debut album Lights on Invada, the record label run by Portishead's Geoff Barrow. Nice

Old Pa's Corner:-
Marianne Faithfull - Late Victorian Holocaust (2014)

No prizes for guessing who was involved in this song. You guessed Nick Cave.

Marianne Faithfull’s album Give My Love to London (2014) is a cracker and no wonder when you see the list of names who have contributed.. Her band includes Portishead's Adrian Utley (guitars), Ed Harcourt (keyboards), Rob Ellis (drums), Dimitri Tikovoi (bass) + string quartet, and special guests Warren Ellis and Jim Sclavunos (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds). Marianne has written most of the lyrics and the music was written by Nick Cave, Anna Calvi, Roger Waters, Pat Leonard, Tom McRae, Steve Earle.

This track is suitably dark and just up my Victorian Alley. Sweet little sleep to you all.

Shell Hunter:-
Kongos - 'Come With Me Now' (2014)

When I hear this track with the accordion, it makes me imagine I'm in a hillbilly's house party, probably a wooden shack somewhere by a river, with the whole place bumping with music and good vibes. God knows why because this group of 4 brothers are South African! It's got to be more Biltong than Beaver for the snacks thankfully. However, they've been living and recording in Phoenix for a long while though which has obviously helped them get their alternative rock/ Kwaito voices heard. They've got a couple of albums under their belt so far entitled Kongos and Lunatic which was originally released in 2012. Thankfully it's had a re-release this year otherwise we might have missed out!

London Scouser:-
Hot Chip - 'Go Bang' (2014)

Only last week I stated that I was waiting to hear something new from Hot Chip, so I googled and I found out that they had recorded a cover of a song by Arthur Russell for an upcoming tribute album. According to Wikipedia,  Arthur Russell was a musician who spanned 4 decades and many more genres but who found most of his success in the disco scene. He died in 1992 from Aids and the tribute album 'Master Mix - Red Hot + Arthur Russell' which is released on October 21st will raise money for the Red Hot Foundation.
This track is 11 minutes long and definitely a disco hit and could have been written for them specifically, it will definitely give me my cravings for Hot Chip's until their next album.

Flycasual:-
Tony Allen - Go Back (feat Damon Albarn) (2014)

A superb, yet sobering track from Afro Beat drummer extraordinaire, Tony Allen, the one time member of Fela Kuti's legendary band Africa 70. 'Go Back' tells the plight of the African refugees who have ended up on the Italian island of Lampedusa and features long time collaborator (The Good, The Bad and The Queen, Rocket Juice and The Moon and Africa Express), Damon Albarn on vocals and keys. Taken from Tony's new album, Film of Life out later this month. If anything for the keyboard that sounds like a hotel lobby band, brilliant!

FRONT ROW CENTRE - LATITUDE 2013 SPECIAL - DAY 2

Welcome back to the Latitude Festival 2013 Special - Day 2!

Latitude Festival Henham Park, Southwold, Suffolk on July 20th 2013

Talk about chalk and cheese with the weather! I woke up on Saturday morning and it was grey and drizzly. Having checked the weather frequently on the run up to the festival, it clearly stated sunny all weekend! Well, needless to say I had not packed for this eventuality apart from the hoody incase it was cool in the evening. So that was me for the day: shorts, flip flops and a hoody. I was bloody freezing and damp but it still didn't take away from the great music that was on. It was a relief that we still had a few sunny spells especially whilst seeing the bands featured here. It was the first day I really noticed people milling around in fancy dress with my particular favourites being a bloke dressed as Alice In Wonderland and several blokes in full ball gowns. Other amusing sights were a guy with a stuffed budgie clipped to his shirt and a man with a massive fried egg T-shirt and bunny mask.

Night Engine - 'Seventeen'

If there is one new band you check out this year, make it Night Engine. My good friend Dominic who plays keyboard for the band, made my visit to Latitude possible so they were up there with my 'must see' bands. Perched along the barriers right at the front of The Lake Stage, I was swallowed up with Night Engine's energy. They got the crowd dancing to funky hits Seventeen, Treat Me Like A Baby and my personal favourite (featured previously on totw), I'll Make It Worth Your While. My friend mused that it was difficult to behold all the facial expressions but in my opinion, its what sets lead singer Phil asides from the rest! Well worth watching these guys if you get a chance, they really give it their all. If it was possible for steam to rise up off the stage from drummer Lee and bassist Eddy during their last track then they warranted it!

Hot Chip - 'Ready For The Floor'

One of my all time favourite dance groups really put on a fabulous show. I was sat in a field on a portable chair shivering under a gloomy sky but as soon as they knocked out big numbers like One Life Stand, Boy From School and this great rendition of Ready For The Floor I was rocking around in my chair and heating up nicely. I was especially impressed when they played Over And Over as despite the fact I was towards the back of the stage, the volume from the crowd singing along felt like I was bang smack in the middle of the mosh pit! I was also surprised to hear that their female (and might I add, highly skilled!) drummer was also playing The Obelisk Stage the previous night, headlining with Bloc Party!

Alt-J - 'Breezeblocks'

A hard decision had to be made: A historic 3-D Kraftwerk show or Alt-J? For me it wasn't that tough as I know far more of Alt-J and they were such a mega part of my listening pleasure last year. On our way to the BBC6 tent, we heard Kraftwerk kick off with Robots which sounded pretty good. As it was now dark out, it was much colder so it was a relief to seek refuge amongst the warmth of a packed tent. The sound was so crisp and the band tight so credit to BBC6 for that. It was really like being part of a community in that tent, the crowd all knew every word of every song and sang in perfect timing. Tessellate and Something Good came surprisingly early on but Alt-J kept me waiting for Breezeblocks and it didn't disappoint.

SHELL HUNTER'S Best of 2012

Come on Team GB!!!

What can I say? It's been a pretty heavy year for me. With the usual ups and downs during the year came a new more responsible job, I turned 30, learned how to scuba dive and got my first (and last) tattoo! We had the most amazing summer surrounding the Olympics that made me feel patriotic for the first time in my life and the best thing is, I have a year's worth of great music to show for it all. Impossible a feat as it was to whittle it down to my TOP FIVE, here they are! Cue gospel like singing....aw aw awwwwww!

Alt-J - Tessellate

It all started with a low rumble, who was this Alt-J I had heard of but never listened to? I thought the name was gimmicky and they probably wouldn't be that good, but bloody hell how wrong was I?! I gave Tessellate a quick whirl and was instantly hooked, the quirky lyrics, gripping piano chime and little ticks and clicks made it so unique. It was also one of my favourite albums of the year and lo and behold a Mercury Music Album of the Year Winner! You can't say fairer than that, triangles are now my favourite shape!

Ben Howard - The Wolves

Okay, this was probably a re-release but I missed the boat the first time round. Sfw had pointed Ben Howard out before but singer songwriters were not really my bag. This song though, has real significance to me. The beginning of this year was a difficult time in my household and having to prove myself in a new role at work was extremely stressful. I used to hear this on the radio at work and sing a long, instantly feeling transported to somewhere calmer and I thought that the "wolves" referred to in the lyrics were all the things and people trying to get me down. I never get sick of hearing it, oooo oooo oooo oooo oooo!

Dan Croll - From Nowhere

2012 has been a real year of discovering new music and new artists. Reading about Dan Croll's story winning £5000 in a Musicians Songwriting Award competition in Uni and his ambition to use this money to record his debut album really inspired me. Who needs the X-Factor and a free ride? Hard work and great talent goes a long way and this song has got success written all over it. It's got a fantastic feel to it with it's electro sounds and instruments in the right balance for a perfect holiday song. I'll be watching out for more from Dan thats for sure!

Hot Chip - Motion Sickness

My favourite dance geeks were back this year with, for me, a very long awaited album. Although I also love Flutes and Night and Day, Motion Sickness has to be my favourite from it. I remember being so excited about listening to the album In Our Heads and worried that I may be disappointed. As soon as I heard this, which is the first track, I was relieved and instantly smitten! It also reminds me of going to see them at Heaven in London as it was the first track they played. A sighting of 2 of the band members whilst trying to find a pub was a bonus! Any bad memories from previous gigs, truly erased!

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - John Taylor's Month Away

You'll have to excuse the arty video, but at least it adds a little interest to the music! When I first listened to it on Old Pa's choice for Tracks of the Week, I thought, yeah its okay and its got some sea gulls in there. I later listened to our TOTW playlist whilst in my car and it came on again. I was absolutely banjaxed by it. I was hypnotised by the mantra of the 2 chords and gentle voice singing of these poor young sailors who "dream of woman they cannot afford and cannot have". I was literally in tears and find it very difficult not to cry when I hear it. The waves and when it fades away then comes back in is pure genius. A real surprise contender for me but the whole world should hear it.

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Hot Chip - 'Flutes'

Hot Chip - 'Flutes' (2012)

I joined a gym last week as I was feeling like a lazy cow and since then have remembered how much music has an influence on my performance and motivation. I have sampled numerous experimental playlists including one mainly of Rage Against the Machine and although that worked me sufficiently hard, it wasn't until I tried out Hot Chip that I realised I could work hard and it not feel like too much of an effort. The new album 'In Our Heads' has some fab gems, my top 3 being...'Motion Sickness', 'Day and Night' and my favourite 'Flutes'.

who needs motivation when you've got a waistcoat like this

A couple of years ago, I was given the gift of a Nike + set for my iPod and read that you could save a "power song" that you could play anytime you needed it at the touch of a button. This made me laugh at the time as I imagined myself having 2 minutes left to go on my run around the block and pressing the button to have 'The Final Countdown' blaring through my earphones for the motivational sprint home. All joking aside I now know what the "power song" feels like! I was on the treadmill the other day, feeling weak and wanting to lower the speed to a boring walk. 'Flutes' started with its chanting and droning xylophone and I immediately got a boost. As it continued to build, I noticed that I was in perfect sync with the beat with my jog. When you have earphones on pretty loud, you can hear all the different layers coming in at different times and I started to concentrate on them. One was the swish of my ponytail, one was the accelerated beat of my heart, one was my breathing and of course my constant and consistent pace. It was a fabulous experience! I was actually enjoying being controlled by the music and had found a power song...all 7.05 minutes of it!

The video can get a bit sickly to watch and it doesn't do the song justice so check out the track itself  to revel (or jog) to its full and powerful glory! And for the Hot Chip fans out there, see them play Brixton Academy this October! Well worth it!!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 20/05/12 - Cornershop, The Tallest Man on Earth, Hot Chip, Admiral Fallow

FOUR TRACKS THAT WERE 'A BOSOM FOR A PILLOW' THIS WEEK!

Old Pa's Corner:-
Admiral Fallow - The Paper Trench(2012)

Where's yer Beard Louis
Here  is a nice piece of Scottish Indie-pop, shades of the Proclaimers (and that is not a bad thing either). I am definitely interested to hear more from these guys and will have a listen to their album  'Tree Bursts in the Snow' released on Monday. This is the only thing I have heard from them, but it breezes along very nicely.

Holy! Moses, Holy Cow!  this is an odd video but I like the front man Louis Abbott, a star in the making.

I'm off to look for a tree! (where have I heard that before?) answers please to the 'Urban Tree Society, Benebecula, PO.Box 007.

Flycasual:-
Cornershop - 'Milkin' it' feat In Light of Aquarius (2012)

I came across 'Milkin' it' a few weeks ago when I was searching for last years album, 'Cornershop & The Double 'O' Groove of' which had pretty rave reviews. It's the first single taken from Cornershop's 8th and latest album, the brilliantly titled, 'Urban Turban' out last Monday, 14th May. I wasn't sure whether I liked the video or the song more but it certainly grew on me. But it must have been the B-boy juices in me that made my mind up as this is an Electro Funk ode to the Old School as In Light of Aquarius reels off a Hip Hop hall of fame (including Kool G Rap featured a couple of days ago). Lauren Laverne mentioned on her BBC6 music show that this is Cornershop's answer to LCD Soundsystem's brilliant self doubting classic, 'I'm Losing My Edge' (one my favourite of theirs). Word!

Shell Hunter:-
Hot Chip - 'Night And Day' (2012)

It's another long awaited album from my geek dance faves Hot Chip. Admittedly this track took some time to grow on me, I just couldn't get my head round the chorus. It wasn't until I was at work last week on a lates shift, the last to leave, locking all the doors and just about to turn off the telly in the restroom when I heard that familiar beat. Although I was in a rush to get the hell out, I had to stop and watch them perform live on JL in awe, as all the clicks and keyboards built each layer of the song up. They've even slipped in a bit of the 2 Bear's voice in there! Low and behold a girl drummer too! I love Hot Chip's look, tweed jackets and large plastic looking specs, is that what they call geek chic? Whatever I think about Jools Holland himself, his show has turned me onto so many amazing groups and shook me to my senses about this fab single. So far 2 out of 2 (Flutes and this one) from the new album called In Our Heads out on 11 June. I am seriously looking forward to seeing them live at Heaven in London on 13th June!
SFW:-
The Tallest Man on Earth '1904'

I am really looking forward to getting hold of the 'The Tallest Man On Earth's (aka Kristian Matsson's) new album There's No Leaving Now. The dylan-esq, '1904' has been generating a bit of buzz on the interweb recently and if the album has more songs like this, I'll be a very happy man.  Download 1904 for free from Rolling Stone

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Hot Chip - 'One Life Stand'

Hot Chip - 'One Life Stand' (2010)

I was really looking forward to my favourite Geek dance group as the support act for the great LCD Soundsystem's last performance. If someone said to me "You'll look back at this evening and laugh" at the time it was happening, I know I'd return it with a face of thunder and probably a jab to their kidney.

This is the epic tale of the journey of the century and the biggest disappointment ever! The meticulous plan was for Flycasual and I to get to London, tube it to Finchley Station, walk the 15 minutes to check in at the Holiday Inn Express in Golders Green to dump our stuff, then make our way to meet London Scouser at Wood Green Tube Station. None of us had been to Alexandra Palace before and nothing prepared us for what was to come. Having completed what we thought was "the hard part" of the journey, we treated ourselves to a can each when we got to the hotel as we'd already been on the road for 2 hours. We thought we'd get the reception to order a taxi as we were running a bit late and according to google map it was a 7 minute cab ride as the crow flies. I should have known we were doomed when the cab rolled up and it was a Mercedes. Too late to opt out we got in and asked how much....£19?! We didn't have enough so called London Scouser to meet us with cash at Wood Green. The journey ended up taking the best part of 35 minutes because of severe roadworks and it was rush hour. London Scouser was a shivering angry mess when we arrived as it was a freezing November evening. He could have been waiting in a nice warm pub for us which was taunting him from across the road. While the three of us argued about whose fault it was, I thought, we're nearly there now, lets' just check out where to go on google map. I found the Alexandra Palace and we followed the little dot for about 20 minutes. It really didn't look right when we made another turning into what looked like a housing estate. I double checked the map with the postcode this time and it turned out Alexandra Palace was also the name of a council estate not far from the actual venue! Feeling rather foolish, we did a 180 and followed the steep incline towards the Ally-Pally.

Dressed appropriately for an evening of queuing

Finally the huge imposing building was in sight, so we joined the queue and took in the fantastic view of London at night from the top of the hill. The queue didn't seem to be moving much and we discovered it wrapped around the building on 3 sides! We were getting very close to the end of our tether and this was not helping. We should've been on our 3rd drink by now! Three quarters of an hour later and we still couldn't see the doors to the venue. Then I heard it, from the other side of the building's thick brick walls, One Life Stand, my favourite song from their new album was playing. Hot Chip had already began and I was nowhere near to getting in, cold, angry and sober! We had already discussed the possibility of blowing the gig off but the guilt of coming that far and not seeing it through was tough. Once in, we noticed there were enormous queues to get to the bar. The bar only accepted tokens which were only available to buy from another area and there were massive queues for them too! Absolutely mortified, there was no way we were going to enjoy the evening in the dark mood we were all in so we left. Couldn't even use the toilets on the way out as they were at the end of an extremely long queue!

Outside, we noticed there were several double decker buses which had been provided by the organisers to ferry people to and from the station. Why had we not been told! We gave our tickets to a couple of fans who thought they could buy tickets on the door so at least we made some body's night! We stomped into the first pub we saw and began to drown our sorrows. It was already 9 o'clock and we hadn't eaten so went to order a burger each. "Sorry we stop doing food at 9" replied bar staff and that was the catalyst to get absolutely blotto! We made our way back to the hotel and found a dingy little pub that decided to have a lock in! Every cloud and all that!

Geek or Chic?

I read an average review of the concert to see what I'd missed but it was the reader's responses which had me hopping up and down in laughter! I couldn't have put it better myself! Check them out here.

GUEST SPOT # 2 - Hot Chip - 'Over and Over'

Hot Chip - 'Over and Over' (2005)

This week's Guest Spot goes to geek lord, Neo:-

Picture this, I'm half way through a 10 hour flight after a 2 week holiday. I fell asleep watching random music videos and woke up in the middle of this really catchy song. When it finished I hoped to find out who it was, but alas nothing. I liked it so much that I decided to (try at least) stay awake until the loop came round again as the artist and title were shown at the start of the video. I failed and bizarrely woke up again at pretty much the same point in the song. When I arrived back home all I could remember were a couple of lines "Over & Over & Over & Over, Like a monkey with a miniature cymbal" I went onto the XFM website and posed the question on a forum. What is this song called containing those lyrics. I waited, and a few minutes later I had my reply. Success !!! Since that moment Hot Chip have been one of my favourite bands, one of many reasons being that they do amazing covers. Like Transmission & Sexual Healing.
