Other Lives - Easy Way Out (2015)

2011's Tamer Animals was one of my albums of the year.  It was a multi-layer of sonic lushness that could have been constructed into a cake that Mary Berry would be proud of.  Since then they've been very quite with only a couple of EPs to whet the appetite.  Thankfully, they are back with Rituals, which will be released in May.  I'm so excited that I could wee.

Think Cure and maybe Hawkwind a tiny pinch of Joy Division and you get an idea of the what to expect from this beauty from The Soft Moon. It is from their new album called Deeper (2015). Right up my street is this! suitably haunting and dark.. I need more!

Jamie XX - 'Loud Places' feat Romy (2014)

This is possibly my track of the year so far, it took a few listens but it's finally burrowed in my head. I'm a fan of the XX anyway and this also features fellow band member Romy on vocals but it's very unlike their trademark 'miserable as those two old bastards in the muppets' sound. Despite myself being the biggest grump in the galaxy, this, for fear of sounding a bit cheeseballs, is uplifting with it's choir like chorus and Jamie's impeccable production. Not to mention the skating in the video. 'Loud Places' is taken from the equally impressive four track preview of his forthcoming debut album, In Colour. Something to really look forward to.

Other Lives - The Partisan

I saw Other Lives last summer at Village Underground in Shoreditch (awesome venue).

They played this cover of Leonard Cohen's The Partisan and I think it could be my favourite ever cover. Their style is perfect for covering Cohen tracks, and dare I say (please don't hate me) I think it's better than the original. Unfortunately I couldn't find a video from the night, but this is close enough.

I also have to admit I felt pretty cool and hip being the only person in the crowd who recognised the song and sang along. That's quite sad isn't it.

When Flycasual & I first started this blog back in March it was to recreate the 'listening' sessions of our past - we'd have a few beers and play a sort of Musical roulette, one of us would play 3 tracks, then another 3, then another 3, whilst catching up, we'd often find ourselves stopping the conversation and asking "What is this great track?", as you can imagine those boozing sessions would often go on far too long and the musical discoveries would often get lost within the hangovers.

"...a typical Tune Doctor listening session..."

Tune Doctor gave us an outlet to continue this  tradition - but allowed us to share & remember it!

However, when Old Pa & Shell Hunter joined, it didn't just continue the memory, it enhanced it - it gave us a wider range of musical discoveries, some would appeal, some wouldn't, but importantly, it wasn't the score, it was the taking part.

Our Guest spot has become the icing on the cake. When someone says "...you have to listen to this track, because....", I'll listen to it over and over and see if I can get a glimmer of why that song has tattooed itself onto that individual or it could be just how a particular song reminds us of someone, a situation, or a place...we all have them, let us know!

Finally this a thank you to Flycasual, Old Pa, Shell Hunter, our Guest Spot writers & finally the many people who have read or commented on the blog.....as the internet can be a lonely place!

TUESDAY BLUES! Other Lives - For 12

Other Lives Tuesday Blues

Sometimes music can paint a picture in your mind.  This song by "Other Lives" (though i'm not convinced on their band name) with its eerie strings & the rhythmic strumming of the the guitar just seems to take me on a journey to the Southwest US, riding across the desert on horseback, with a cowboy hat - ok...ok....I digress, you get the picture.  Either way it's a tune for a Tuesday
