Field Music - A New Town (2012)

Sometimes a song makes you stop what you're doing and makes you quickly grab your phone to fire up Shazam. This usually fairly simple method of finding out what song is playing  becomes a bit more difficult to do when you are are driving through the lanes of Wales at night with no 3g connection. After pulling over (in a safe manner) I quickly pressed the record button and was intrigued to be find out it was by 'Field Music'.  Now I have to be honest here, they're a band that I've not really delved into but all the material I've heard I've liked and after listening to this I'll be sorting that out, because this is brilliant! The groove is entrancing and I can quite easily say this will be in my top 10 of the year! Download it below for free!

King Creosote &Jon Hopkins - John Taylor's Month Away (2011)

I just cannot stop playing this since I heard it a week ago, is'nt it great?  when you get these few and far between musical moments. It has just been released as a single this year but comes from the Mercury Price Nominated album 'Diamond Mine(2011)' which is absolutely fabulous. Who is King Creosote? You may well ask! Well, would you believe his real name is Kenny Anderson, he is Scottish (surprise) and comes from Fife. He has only released something like 40 albums. Yes, 40 albums. I am so knocked out with his stuff that I will be searching out his back catalogue. I have already introduced the track to the TD team but I think it deserves to be shared with everybody and everyone.  Remember King Creole and the Coconuts well this is the Scottish version :  King Creosote and the Haggis (silly joke, but I could not resist it). Enjoy!

Reverend And The Makers - 'Bassline' (2012) 

Has it already been two years since we heard from these Sheffield indie electropoppers? "The Reverend" John McClure is back after a break from music with a third album called '@Reverend_makers' which should be released on 7th May. 'Bassline' which is free to download from Facebook if you befriend The Reverend, is back to form. Lots of great examples of the Sheffield accent which I love and of course, more importantly head bopability! Like what you hear? Check out another classic Reverend and The Makers track here!

Eyesdown - Bonobo feat Dels & Andreya Triana (2012)

I must have first heard the original of Eyesdown a couple of years ago (taken from Bonobo's 2010 Black Sands album) but this version I heard recently is taken from a remix of that album, released last month and features Dels on the M I C. I've never really been a big fan of Brighton based Bonobo, apart  from a few beat heavy Trip Hop tunes in the late 90's but maybe I've been missing out as I love this song with it's unique offbeat rhythm and Andreya's dreamy vocals, a real Sunday morning track. (or Tuesday morning if you're a shift worker like me).  Sometimes songs are best left as they are, as Eyesdown is a beautiful piece of downtempo electronica but I'm a fan Dels's lazy drawl and I feel he brings the song a grittier edge, contrasting well with Andreya. You'd be a monkey not to like it...Bonobo monkey? Oh forget it.

TV on the Radio - 'Will Do' (2011)

I just loved their last album 'Dear Science' and was probably my most played of that year, so I have been looking forward to the new one, 'Nine Types of Light'. I sampled through it and this track stood out immediately and I have played it several times.....I'm looking forward to getting into the full album. I will put in on my I-podish thing and take the dogs out for a long walk. Improve the mind and excerise at the same time. You can't beat it..

Eddie Vedder - 'Can't Keep' (2011)

I've always been a huge PJ (Pearl Jam not Pyjamas) fan and I easily could go on and on about how they made a huge imprint on my life...but I won't, well maybe a little. In the early 90's, it seemed to be Nirvana vs PJ, and Nirvana seemed to come out on top. But I must admit that for me, it was always Pearl Jam. Anyway, I digress, Eddie Vedder has released a solo album called "Ukulele songs" which unsurprisingly features Eddie singing with a Ukulele.  It's probably a bit long, and a little self indulgent but I love it because 1. Its Eddie Vedder and 2. I have a Ukulele! I've chosen the song "Can't Keep" (the original version featured on the PJ Riot Act Album) and in the video he looks like a musical guardian perched on the gateway to a Hawaiian island holding back the ocean.

DELS - 'Shapeshifter' (2010)

Apparently John Peel discovered Kieren Dickins some 10 years ago as a teenager, when he was performing at a bar in Ipswich. Although 'Shapeshifter' was out last year, it is taken from his newly released debut album 'GOB'. Touted as the new voice of UK Hip-Hop, DELS brings some much needed fervour to the genre, with fresh rhymes and innovative beats (here courtesy of Hot Chip's Joe Goddard). With the track about how he used to imagine changing into different characters when he was younger, DELS is an MC with definitely a lot more to say than the average bear!
