GRATEFUL DEAD -  When I Paint My Masterpiece (1988)

Here are two live versions of When I Paint My Masterpiece. The first one is by the Grateful Dead taken on the 09/24/88 at Madison Square Garden and the second is by Jerry Garcia and John Kahn, from a Sound Board Recording taken at a concert in Santa Cruz, CA, October 16, 1985.

There is so much Dylan Covers available, literally hundreds and hundreds by the Dead and individual their members, it is so difficult to select anything. I love the Dead covering Dylan so I hope you like these two different versions.

Well did you know the name of the Grateful Dead before they became the Grateful Dead? well it was of course the Warlocks.  Here are two Dylan covers from some very famous concerts which took place on the 9th & 10th of Oct 1989 at the Hampton Coliseum.

For some reason the Band wanted to have a low profile for these shows, so the venue was not included as part of the regular ticket sale for the East Coast fall tour. Instead, tickets went on sale at local outlets ten days before the concerts, with the band billed as "Formerly the Warlocks" instead of the Grateful Dead. When the band came to town, the marquee of the Coliseum read "The Warlocks", which had been the Grateful Dead's original name for a few months in 1965.


In a 1993 poll of Grateful Dead tape traders, the October 9, 1989 show was ranked number 4 on the list of all-time favourite Dead concert tapes, and the October 8 show also appeared on the list, That is pretty impressive judging by the amount of concerts the GD have done.

CAT POWER - Stuck inside a Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again

I went with Cat Power's version from the 'I'm Not There' Soundtrack. Excellent Soundtrack, but if the truth be know the film was disappointing. It had its moments but they were few and far between. Other contenders were again the Grateful Dead and Steve Gibbons. 

BECK - Leopard-Skin-Pill-Box Hat

I like Beck's version from the Album  'War Child - Heroes vol. 1' it does stray away a bit from the original but never the less, I like it and it's my choice, so there. Other ones I considered were versions by Raphael Saddiq and Jimmy Lafave.

RICHIE HAVENS - Just Like a Woman


This was a difficult one as there are so many fantastic covers of this brilliant Dylan song. This version is  Live from 1974 but his studio version taken from the album 'Mixed Bag' (1967) is probably better . There were so many contenders here, Van Morrison, Jo Cocker and Jeff Buckley to name but a few. 

EARL SCRUGGS - Most likely You go Your Way


I love this version taken from the album 'Live at Kansas Stat'(1973) great backing and I just love his voice. Other possibilities were the Nighthawks or the Yardbirds.

DEBORAH COLEMAN - Temporary Like Achilles

This cover is taken from the excellent 'Blues on Blonde on Blonde' it is one of these songs which has not been covered too often. My other choice that I had available was by the Don Olsen Gang, which is more than acceptable too.

Here is a couple of magnificent acoustic versions of  'She belongs to Me' The first one is a take by Gerry Garcia, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead and is absolutely superb. The second is another brilliant rendition by Gerry Garcia and Dave Grisham taken from a live concert in Warfield (1992) (with much  appreciation to the kind persons who put these fabulous videos up on You Tube)

I think the GD are my favourite artists covering  Dylan songs. I would not like the job of compiling all the various live covers they have actually done. I have waded through the Soundboard series which is available out there and covers most of the hundred and hundreds of live shows they have done from the early 60s until they finished in the 90's. Although they were prolific in Dylan covers and almost always included one or sometimes two in each set, they stuck to no more than about a dozen songs. These are featured in the excellent 'Post cards from the Hanging' and the equally great 'Garcia Plays Dylan'.

One of these days I must plough through and listen to all these different takes.

Is there any Deadhead out there who has listed exactly the number of each Dylan song covered....It is a big task.

Bob Weir and his Band  RatDog  have also done many many live covers of Dylan and I will feature some, mabe next week or in the near future.

This week is our first, in a two part 'Dylan Cover' guest spot and comes from an old school teacher during Flycasual's days in Saudi Arabia. His class was the original school of rock, he was funny, he was good at maths, he almost led us to footy glory in Dhahran 88', he's Brendan Barry:-

Never Ending Baby Blue

No other Dylan song has yielded so many great covers as It’s All Over Now Baby Blue. One of the main reasons for this is that Them’s magnificent and highly original 1966 arrangement has itself been covered and reworked by so many bands.

Including  Bob himself, I can count at least 9 versions that are worthy of stone cold classic status.

(1) Dylan’s own version, especially the one with his Blonde on Blonde voice from ‘Live 1966’,

(2) Them’s jaw-dropping reconstruction mentioned above.

  (3) Grateful Dead’s fluid and seamless live version from ‘Vintage Dead’

(4) The Byrds’ stunning stinging staccato outtake from ‘Turn Turn Turn’,

(5) Joan Baez’s classic crystal clear clarion call delivery from 1965.
