COWBOY JUNKIES - Handouts in the Rain

A few weeks back I had my nephew over from Canada along with one of his friends. They were both in their early fifties but boy! were they wild and boy! could they drink. I had a few sessions with them but just could not keep up the pace so we shipped them off to Benidorm for a few days. I needed recovery before the next session.

It was just one long gut busting laughter session. These guys had so many stories to tell. My nephew is a freelance photographer for the police and the other guy was an engineer and part time guitarist in a Band. and travelled all over. 

At one time Fred lived next door to two members of Arcade Fire and knows them well and often heard them jamming next door.

As for their love life well they could make 10 movies about them and much better than that shitty 40 shades of crap effort.

Here are two little things that happened on their trip of which was an incident filled happening. Both I found so amusing, I even laugh out loud thinking about them.

They had planned to catch flight from Montreal to New York then to Madrid and then to Alicante. When they arrived at Montreal they found that their flight was cancelled. Holiday over before it began. By my nephew Fred is a real charmer and managed to get arranged on the same ticket another flight to New York and then a flight to Paris and the on to Alicante. Carl was very impressed with all this organisation and decide to just sit back and let it all happen and follow Fred. When he told this, Fred was in total surprise and said that is odd and that he was following Carl as he seemed to know what he was doing. I don't know how?  but they got here,

The second story was after a drinking session, all day (I am still suffering) Carl got up during the night and went outside for a smoke. In a daze he came back in and passed my parrot, the parrot,  in my voice said 'are you OK'. Carl replied  'yes I am fine, just going back to bed'. He was half way up the stairs when he realised he just had a conversation with a parrot.

HOW DOES IT FEEL!

REM - Country Feedback/Like a Rolling Stone

Here is something a little different this week. Two songs, that include as part of the song, a Dylan Cover.

First up is the fabulous Country Feedback by REM and features at the end, part of  Like a Rolling Stone. It fits in just perfectly. This was recorded in 2001 in an Unplugged Session and is available.

The second one by Arcade Fire features It's a Hard Rain and this time it is at the beginning of the equally fabulous Wake Up. This was recorded live on 2005-05-06  at  Academy 2, Birmingham, UK.

I might do some of this type of cover in the future. What do you think?

Tindersticks - Goodbye to the City (2013)

I always get excited when I hear of a new Tindersticks album, even if this one contain only songs from their past, but redone. Not usually keen on this sort of thing. Jeff Lynn did it recently and it did not really work. Chris Rea did it also, but in his case it was a great success. The original track came from their Waiting for the Moon album (2003), not one of their best, but this was one of the standout tracks. Oh! I just love the voice of Stuart Staples, it is so distinctive, like Leonard Cohen or Ian Curtis. I am a great fan of doom and gloom, it makes me happy. If doom is your bag, then Staples is your man.

I think Stuart and the boys do the track justice but but I give the original the edge.

Arcade Fire - 'Reflektor' (2013)

I love, love, love this song! It has seriously grown on me! At first I thought it sounded a bit like Hercules and Love Affair with it's jiggly danciness but Win Butler, the Fire's lead singers vocals gave it away. I love the addition of the whispy french lyrics, they give it a certain...I don't know what. I read that none other than our mate David Bowie popped by the studio whist the band were mixing to have a listen, liked what he heard so much that he was invited to guest on the single! This track is taken from their fourth album (out on 28th October), also called Reflektor, and was produced by another musical mastermind, James Murphy, the former frontman of LCD Soundsystem. It truly shows that he is definitely not losing his edge!

Cass McCombs - 'There Can Be Only One' (2013)

Whether or not There Can Be Only One is a reference to Highlander, you'd have to ask Mr McCombs directly. This song features on his latest release, the 2 disc, Big Wheels and Others, which is released tomorrow (October 14th) - a great excuse to visit your local record shop. A relaxed vibe of guitar, bass & bongos. It has the sort of groove that makes you want to bump & grind with the missus. I think he's a genius.

Porcelain Raft - 'Lost Connection' (2013)

Oooof, no problem connecting with this beautifully melancholic track that gets under your skin but in a good way. The rolling piano in tandem with the vocal melody makes for a emotional kidney punch of a song which just sounds like it has been written by somebody who's been kicked in the butt by love. It's fo sho the stand out from London based Italian, Mauro Remiddi aka, Porcelain Raft, second album Permanent Signal.

I'd put this on a "drive to work playlist" and I can clearly remember setting off on the daily grind, whilst the sun was rising and it came on....  I probably repeated it 20 times that morning as I was hooked (I used to drive 1hr and 45mins each way) and whether it was the uplifting tempo, the sun shining or being half asleep... it made me buy all their back catalogue and I was finally 'ready to start' to give the Arcade Fire the attention that the critics had given them, but I, until that time, had not.

"...we're a happy bunch...."

I've got the Tuesday Blues, because Saturday is so far away.....
