TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 03/02/2013 - Young Fathers, I am Kloot, Soundgarden, Iron and Wine, Mark Lanegan

Five heavyweights we'd want for our musical scrum this week!

Flycasual:-
Young Fathers - 'Romance' (2013)

Andy Murray, Susan Boyle, William Wallace and you can now add Young Fathers to that illustrious list of Scottish heroes, for finally putting Scotland firmly on the Hip Hop map. It was pure serendipity that I came across the Edinburgh trio too. They have recently signed to Anticon, the California indie/experimental Hip Hop label and it was only after listening to one of the label's old samplers that I went on to their website to see what's new. Some of Anticon's stuff is good but some of it is just bloody weird, standing out from the crowd, however, were Young Fathers. Their album Tape One has just been released (Tape Two out in March) and at just over 30 minutes it was exactly what I was looking for. With atmospheric electronic beats and clever wordplay, their style reminds me of a cross between De La Soul and Massive Attack (certainly on the smoky and dubby single, Romance). Definitely worth checking out and I'll be surprised if we don't hear more from them. Fresh!

Check the Young Fathers website or for some bizarrely brilliant Hip Hop the Anticon website....

I Am Kloot - 'These Days Are Mine' (2013)

I Am Kloot where first tracked by my music appreciating radar in 2010 with their album Sky At Night, despite having been around since 2001 with 8 albums under their belt! Whenever I heard the lead singer's Neil Youngesque twang, I always pictured a gang of ZZ Top looking guys with curiously long beards from down South in the US. They are actually a neatly shaven 3 piece from Manchester, so what do I know! I really love this new track from latest album Let It All In, especially the little Arabian strings bit. It immediately reminds me of the great song 'I Think I'm In Love' by Spiritualised. It's got a hypnotising mantra sort of feel to it, one that you don't want to end! By the way if anyone knows why the band are called I Am Kloot, I'd love to know....

Soundgarden - 'By Crooked Steps' (2013)

Last week I featured Alice In Chains and now Soundgarden. Have I fallen down a rabbit hole and emerged in the 90's ??? God I wish, cos then I'd get to rediscover Grunge and all its grimy goodness again. What can I say about Chris Cornell that hasn't already been said on here many times. The man's voice is (and I don't use the word lightly) truly awesome. The video (directed by Dave Grohl!) cracks me up seeing the band rocking out on Segways !! Last year's King Animal crept up on me towards the latter part of the year and has been played a good few times since and will be many more times to come.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Iron and Wine - Lover's Revolution (2013)

Wow! this is a stunning track and like nothing else 'Iron and Wine' have done before. It is Jazzy and has some of the best and cleverest lyrics I have heard for some time. (check these lyrics out). There is a tension all through this song and it rises. (feel it!)

It comes from their new album 'Ghost on Ghost'  (Blonde on Blonde)  released in April. If this is a taster my appetite has been fuelled. I am not usually a jazzy sound type of  guy, but after a second hearing, I was hooked on this. My first track of the year, i'm saying!.

'Everybody said they would sign the cast'

SFW:-
Mark Lanegan - Red Balloon

Mark Lanegan under the influence..

"Red Balloon" features on a Tim Hardin tribute album called 'Reason to Believe - The Songs of Tim Hardin' which aims to pay homage to one of the 60's most influential, yet forgotten, folk songwriters. Early fans of his work included Johnny Cash, Robert Plant, Rod Stewart and Joan Baez who all covered his work and other notable fans include Joe Strummer, Leonard Cohen,  and Bob Dylan (who once called Hardin “the greatest songwriter alive”).

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 22/04/12 - Willy Mason, Crybaby, Soundgarden, Jake Bugg

Fed up with all these April showers? Don't worry have a listen to these four songs that put thunder in our hearts.

Old Pa's Corner :-
Crybaby - 'I Cherish The Heartbreak, More Than The Love That I Lost (2012)

What do you get when you slip a bit of Richard Hawley in with a bit of Morrissey and mix it all up, well you get Crybaby of course. I love this, it's a grower, I have not listened to the album where this comes from or have I heard anything else by Crybaby but I will tell you this for nothing......it is right bang at the top of my wanted list to hear.

Sfw:-
Jake Bugg - 'Lightning Bolt' (2012)

Shell Hunter previously featured his song, 'Trouble Town' as a TOTW and this Nottingham born singer-songwriter has got more up his sleeve with this track. It has been getting the attention of the great and the good with Zane Lowe making it his Hottest Record of the week and he's currently supporting Michael Kiwanuka around Europe. When I first heard it I thought it sounded like Alex Turner meets George Formby but don't let that put you off! I'm expecting we'll be hearing more from him - don't let it "Bugg" you!

Shell Hunter:-
Soundgarden - 'Live To Rise' (2012)

As a big superhero film fan(which naturally comes with being married to a comic book fiend), I have caught up with two of the Marvel characters from the new Avengers film I kept putting off, Thor and Captain America. It wasn't until then that I discovered Soundgarden were releasing a new song for the film. It isn't as heavy as it could be but I can tell it'll go hand in hand with lots of action landscapes and possibly some love interest scenes as well. I've listened to it a good few times already and it has really grown on me. Chris Cornell's shout-sing is as good as ever and they've used a previous winning chorus combo: its got the word Sun in it! Persevere, with great riffage comes great responsibility!

Check Soundgarden's website for a link to download this track for FREE here but be quick, its only for a limited time!

Flycasual:-
Willy Mason - Restless Fugitive (2012)

Oh no not bloody Willy Mason again! We've featured him 3 times over the last month but I can't help it, I just love this song. I got it as a free download from his site to coincide with the forthcoming release of his new album but it wasn't until my recent trip to Florida that I finally fell in love with it. One of my favourite things to do is to gaze out of a window, whether it be a plane, train or automobile, listening to music, lost in my own wierd little world. So on approaching my destination I wanted to listen to something with a Floridian theme, I was disappointed to find that I only had Sade's 'Smooth Operator' with it's tenuous link to Key Largo and that was that. I then threw on a playlist of songs 'to hear' and I was instantly captivated by 'Restless Fugitive'. It's a wonderful song, I love the atmosphere it conjures, with it's great percussive intro, bassline, echo-ey guitars and Willy Mason's croaky voice. Perfect for watching all the little yachts on their drug runs.

I can't get enough of Willy at the moment.....it's definitely one of my favourite songs of the year so far! Do yourself a favour and download it from his site here......it's free!!

Fill up your water butts with more tracks of the week!

GIVE ME A GUITAR!! - Temple Of The Dog - 'Hunger Strike'

Temple Of The Dog - 'Hunger Strike' (1991)

I first heard of Temple Of The Dog long after I was a fan of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and was already in love with Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder's unique rock voices. My now husband(his romancing tactics cleary worked) brought over the album in a obvious bid to woo me with his music expertise and it really knocked me for six! Take heed you ladies out there, it will make you go weak at the knees in parts! Chris Cornell wrote the album as a tribute to the late Andrew Wood, the former lead singer of band Mother Love Bone. Its hard to believe that this album was released before Pearl Jam's 'Ten'!

Nobody puts Temple Of The Dog in the corner

What I loved about the album and especially the song Hunger Strike, was that it had a rock sound but was slower and less angry. Vedder and Cornell's voices compliment each other well with Vedder having the smooth low warble and Cornell's perfectly placed high pitched rock scream! There is no other man that can make Musketeer chic look sexy! As my own tribute, I have included a Mother Love Bone track straight from the well loved "Singles" sound track. Chloe Dancer/ Crown of Thorns is a splice of two songs but to me, can only ever be heard as one. Prepare for goosebumps!

It's all for one

And one for rock!
