DYLAN COVERS # 198 Warren Zevon - Chimes of Freedom/Ring Them Bells

for every hung-up person

WARREN ZEVON - Chimes of Freedom (2000)

Here are two live takes by the late great 'Werewolf of London' himself. Warren was a big fan of Dylan and there are quite a few covers going the rounds. The first up is The Chimes of Freedom from a concert in Philadelphia in 2000 and the second is Ring Them Bells from a concert in Denver in 1996.

Both are pretty good.

DYLAN COVERS # 197 The Beatles/Phil Ochs/Lucinda Williams - Positively 4th Street

WHAT A DRAG IT IS

THE BEATLES - Positively 4th Street

Here are some interesting ones. First up is none other that The Beatles themselves doing a little warm up by doing Positively 4th Street. Pity about the quality and it is a shame the version is not longer. This can be found on Let It Be Rehearsals Vol 2.

Now this is really good, especially as it is rumoured that Phil may well be one of the influence why Dylan wrote the song. It is also relevant, as at one point Bob apparently threw Phil out of his car (not literally. This is well documented in the book Positively 4th Street,  a must read. The short track is on
Hero of the Game - Live  New York Radio Broadcast 1965.

Finally one of my favourite covers and this is a version by Lucinda Williams and can be found on Bottom Line Archive Series Vol 1

DYLAN COVERS # 196 Alicia Keys/Antony and the Johnsons - Pressing On

WHY ME BOBBY ?

ALICIA KEYS - Pressing On (2013)
Well good for you Alicia to go and cover Bobby,  especially after he was lusting after you. Well you are a pretty girl. Not a bad version of Pressing On too and it can be found on the Muscle Shoals (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2013).
The other version is by Antony and the Johnsons and this is on his album Thank You for Your Love (2010)
Both are OK,  but not a patch on Dylan's version. But I suppose, with a few exceptions, that is gererally the case.

DYLAN COVERS # 195 Glen Campbell/Stevie Wonder/Ann Murray - Blowin In the Wind/Don't Think Twice

TO BE FREE

GLEN AND STEVIE - Blowin in the Wind

Here are two Dylan covers from the Glen Campbell show feature the great Stevie Wonder. Forget the first minute or so but when he starts BITW it is pretty good. The other cover is a pretty much average take with Anne Murray. Never the less worth a visit.

Glen has done quite a few Dylan Covers in his time and did an album of instrumentals in 1966.

I spied my little bundle of joy
DAVY GRAHAM - Down Along the Cove (1969)

Here are two covers of Down Along the Cove by two different icons of the sixties. the first take is by Davy Graham the guitar virtuoso and is from his album Hat (1969).

The second is by good 'ol Georgie Fame and this can be found on his album Someone Stole My Thunder (2007)

DYLAN COVERS # 193 Jimmy LaFave - Queen Jane Aproximately x 3

I'm sick of all this repetition

JIMMY LAFAVE - Queen Jane Approx. (2015)

I just love Jimmy LaFave's voice and his interpretation of Dylan's songs and there is quite a few. It is a wonder he has not released a double album of Dylan covers. Come on Jimmy you must do it? for all us Dylan Cover fans.

The track can be found on his excellent new album The Night Tribe (2015).

Following are two live takes of the song, the next one is from a concert at The Folk Alliance International 2015 in Kansas City. The next one I don't know where its from but what I can say is, they are all great.

DYLAN COVERS # 192 Nico /The Tallest Man on Earth - I'll Keep it with Mine

If you might think I’m odd

NICO - I'll Keep it with Mine (Live Version)(1982)

Here are two different versions of one of my favourite Dylan songs. The first from Nico is an almost scary take as she either seems pissed or drugged up,(maybe that is a disservice) but nevertheless it is worth hearing. It can be found on her live album Femme Fatale (1982)

The second version is pretty good by The Tallest Man on Earth,  spoiled by people laughing at inappropriate times and obviously not understanding the song. They feel as if they should laugh at the word odd. How very odd indeed. This was recorded at Lincoln Hall in Chicago, May 28, 2010.

DYLAN COVERS # 191 Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower - Studio Rehersals/Like a Rolling Stone - Newport '69

The Holy Grail

JIMI HENDRIX - All Along the Watchtower - Rehearsals

This is just fabulous, it like finding the Holy Grail of Dylan Covers. It is pretty near a recognised fact that the Electric Ladyland version of All Along the Watchtower is probably the greatest Dylan cover of all time. I would have to agree, it takes a lot of beating. It is the perfect rock record, it has got the lot.

You can play this at my funeral and I will certainly be smiling when the flames come for me.

This can be found on the 6 CD set Naked Ladyland.  Above is a 35 min series of rehearsals showing how they get to the final recording. There is also some more of the same on one of the other discs. This is a must for Hendrix and Dylan fans alike. Absolutely Brilliant.

The Meat Loaf cover can be found on his album Couldn't Have Said It Better (2003) and the Diana Ross version was on her 1984 album Swept Away.

DYLAN COVERS # 186 Golden Earing/Siouxise and Banshees (Live)/Shocking Blue - Wheel's On Fire

IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME WELL!

GOLDEN EARRING - Wheels's On Fire (1997)

Three takes here of Wheels's On Fire. The first take is by Golden Earring and here is an interesting fact for you about these good lads. They have been around  since 1961 and have been active for more than 50 years non-stop, which makes them the world's longest surviving rock band. Beat that Mr Jagger!

This can be found on the album Naked II (1997)

Second is an excellent live take by Siouxsie and the Banshees, recorded on 12/09/88 at the Royal Albert Hall and can be found on thealbum,  Siouxsie and the Banshees At the BBC (2009)

SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES - Wheel's On Fire (1988)

And finally a real shocker, Shocking Blue do a version on their Come back album called Comeback from 1988. Don't know what to think. A bit of a strange one, but you can dance to it. 'Nuff said.

TWO FOR THE MONEY - Tom Jones - What good am I/Carrying a Torch

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB
UNUSUALLY BRILLIANT
Fall in love, I'm never gonna fall in love

TOM JONES AND VAN MORRISON - Carrying a Torch

I am Over in the U.K. at the moment. Shellhunter has given me a daughter Ripley, she is a little belter!

I have always loved the voice of TJ since hearing It's not Unusual,  listenting to the top 20 'under the covers' on a Sunday Night on Radio Luxembourg in the early sixties. Here is Tom singing two great songs by two of my very favourites. Bob and Van.

As regards the Voice the TV programme. Less said. I know I Am, I'm not!.

DYLAN COVERS # 185 REM - Like a Rolling Stone/Arcade Fire - It's a Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

HOW DOES IT FEEL!
REM - Country Feedback/Like a Rolling Stone

Here is something a little different this week. Two songs, that include as part of the song, a Dylan Cover.

First up is the fabulous Country Feedback by REM and features at the end, part of  Like a Rolling Stone. It fits in just perfectly. This was recorded in 2001 in an Unplugged Session and is available.

The second one by Arcade Fire features It's a Hard Rain and this time it is at the beginning of the equally fabulous Wake Up. This was recorded live on 2005-05-06  at  Academy 2, Birmingham, UK.

I might do some of this type of cover in the future. What do you think?

DYLAN COVERS # 184 Nighthawks/Steve Hackett - Man in a Long Black Coat

WE DON'T HAVE A 'THE' WE ARE NIGHTHAWKS!

STEVE HACKETT - Man in The Long Black Coat (2006)

Here are two versions of one of Dylan's most mysterious songs. There are quite a few good cover versions out there, but I quite like these two, especially Nighthawks.

The first one is by Steve Hackett probably most famous for his spell with Genesis. You can find this on the album WILD ORCHIDS (2006).

Take two is by Nighthawks and is on their album 4 (2007). Really nice Jazzy feel to this.

Nighthawks are a German jazz Duo and not to be confused with 'The Nighthawks' the US Rock Blues Band.

DYLAN COVERS # 182 Bettye LaVette - Everything is Broken/Unbelievable

'Kill that beast and feed that swine'

BETTYE LAVETTE - Everything is Broken (2012)

Here are two covers by Bettye LaVette who has been on the go since the sixties. It is a bit strange she has only recently found a bit of fame as she has a fantastic soul voice. Her new album and her previous album have both contained Dylan covers and both are definitely worth your time.

The first take is Everything is Broken and is from her album Thankful N' Thoughtful (2012).

The second one Unbelievable, not a common Dylan cover by any means. Do you know which album it comes from?. Of course you do!, or you would not be reading this. It is from the, shall we say 'patchy' Under The Red Sky (1992). You can find this on her excellent new album Worthy (2015).

DYLAN COVERS # 181 - Steven Stills - The Balad of Hollis Brown x 2

LOVE THE ONE YOUR WITH

STEVEN STILLS - The Ballad of Hollis Brown (1991)

Here are two versions of The Ballad of Hollis Brown sung by Stephen Stills the first one is from his solo album Still Alone (1991) and the second is live from Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas in 1995. Both are pretty good in my opinion.

There are a few versions out there of Stlls singing The Girl from the North Country which I may feature at a later date. In the meantime enjoy these two.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 25/01/15 - Mustang, Death From Above 1979, Bob Dylan, The Charlatans

Four tracks to warm your knackers...

Shell Hunter:-
The Charlatans - 'Come Home Baby' (2015)

A perfect continuation from my TOTW last week,The Prodigy, Godfathers of the 90s charts, is of course The Charlatans. This is a solid offering and wouldn't be out of place on a Best of. Its got the sort of hook that has you waking up humming the chorus. There's even the nice signature bass line in there, whats not to like?! Their 12th album Modern Nature is out tomorrow and I'm confident there will be a good helping of winners on it. Tim and co had the help of mixing by Craig Silvey who also produced with Arcade Fire and Portishead which should hopefully throw some interesting quirks in the mix too. Believe me, I'm not Tellin' Stories!

Sfw:-
Death From Above 1979 - White is Red (2014)
Some songs just get you.  They have the ability to pick you up and are so infectious that you can play them to death.  One such tracks is 'White is Red' by Death From Above 1979.  Its a riff-loaded, foot-stomping masterpiece from the Toronto duo. It features on their album The Physical World, which was released in September 2014.  On evidence of this, it is an album that I must get hold of!

Old Pa's Corner:-
Bob Dylan - Stay with Me (2015)

Well you are either going to just love this or you are going to be the complainer you have always been. Here is a second track from Dylan's new album of Sinatra covers called Shadows in the Night. It will be released in the first week of February. (Just in time for Valentines day)

Rumours of the album were out last April and because it was not released, I immediately thought it would be a bummer. Dylan does not do bummer.

From what I have heard, it is refreshing takes on old standards (no strings). But I am biased and you are entitled to your view too. Utterley fragile, utterley fabulous and as they say in the X-factor, 'You have made it your own!'  Bob!.

Flycasual:-
Mustang - 'Hang' (2014)

'Hang', no nonsense, shit kicking old school Metal to make your ears bleed but in a good way! A great rock voice, a drummer with good chops and throw in a fairly decent bassist and you have Mustang, a three piece from Durham, formed in 2012 and who are hoping to release their debut album later this year. I actually grew up with the bassist and he was a veritable 'sweaty' (his word not mine) back then and I'm pleased he hasn't lost his combination hair flicks and bass stance. 'Hang' is written as a result of a hit and run in which their friend was knocked off his bike and left for dead. The track is dedicated to the driver who still hasn't been found.

The Northeast's finest, putting the Metal back in Metal. Catch them live and check out their website here....

DYLAN COVERS # 180 Bon Jon Jovi - The Chimes of Freedom/Just Like a Woman

An’ for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail

BON JOVI - Chimes of Freedom

Here are two from Mr Jon Bon Jovi himself who it appears is a bit of a fan of old Bob and the first record he bought was by Bob. Hey! Me and Jon Bon have something in common and in fact he has risen a few notches in my estimation. The first take is the Chimes of Freedom and was a live recording taken at  The Stone Pony, Asbury Park NJ in September 2001,

The second is a live acoustic take from Japan in 1994. It is a shame it is only the one verse, but a good effort never the less.

I have a couple more JBJ Dylan Covers on file which I may feature at a later date Maybe!
