TRACKS OF THE WEEK 04/05/2014 - Jack White, We Are Scientists, Caveman, Royal Blood, Brian Jonestown Massacre

Happy Birthday Old Pa!...5 tracks to help you start life as a pensioner...

Shell Hunter:-
Jack White - 'Lazaretto' (2014)

Yeah! The music genius that is Jack white is back! This track has truly knocked my socks off! I was at work last week and fighting with 2 ancient telex printers, drowning in noise and reems of paper when my ears pricked up like a musical meerkat! A colleague of mine must have felt the same because he said "that is great, what is it?!" I said 'God knows, but it sounds like Rage Against the Machine!" He ran over to the radio but it was too late, the title had diappeared. Lucky for me and my amazing ears, I heard them announce it was the brand new title track from Jack white's second solo album due out next month. I'm excited to hear what else he's got in store! PS. Does anyone else think Jack White reminds them of Heath Ledgers depiction of Joker? How cool can you get!

We Are Scientists - 'Make It Easy' (2014)

My album of 2008 was by far and away 'Brain Thrust Mastery' and when Shellhunter and I saw 'Kings Of Leon' in Vegas that year I was pleasantly surprised to see that We Are Scientists were the support... They were really good, better than Messrs. Followill in my opinion. Their follow up album 'Barbara' in 2010 didn't float my boat as much but they seem back on form with their newly released album 'TV En Francais' I've listened to it a couple of times and already I'm liking it a lot. This is the first single off of the album and I can sense a difficult decision come December when I have to choose which track makes it into my #tracksoftheyear

Royal Blood - 'Come On Over' (2014)

Blog and now a firm family favourite, Royal Blood, did their credentials no harm after their aural assault on Jools Holland (22/04/14). It was pretty pulsating stuff, turned up to '11' and everything, with drummer, Ben Thatcher, giving a jaw dropping performance (honourable mention to Mike Kerr on the Bass), inspiring me to maybe pick up the sticks for my midlife crisis (cheaper than a Ferrari). As we eagerly await news of an album, 'Come on Over' is the third release from the Brighton duo. They have performed at SXSW this year and will be on the festival circuit performing at Glastonbury and Reading later, definitely a band to see live. Big ting awaits.

Unfortunately the performance of 'Come on Over' on Jools Holland wasn't available on video yet (official video has boobs and is a bit saucy)  but you can catch them play 'Little Monster' here.....to see what I mean, a must watch.

Caveman - Shut You Down (2014)

Like an Emperor Palpatine keeping an eye on a young Anakin Skywalker, I've followed Caveman since their 2011 debut CoCo Beware. Heavy on the reverb and a great guitar melody, this is their latest release from their self-titled second album.  How can I describe them? They've been labelled "chamber pop, dreampop, folk with synths, ethereal, echo-laden alt country, guitar-heavy psychedelia and soft prog" - I usually say "They are awesome".

Old Pa's Corner :-
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Food For Clouds(2014)

This track Food for Clouds is taken from the new album of the same name by The Brian Jonestown Massacre.

This is pretty good, it has a 'trippy' 'dubby' feel with a thumping base all the way through. It also has a distinctive brass sound coming through at the end of each verse. Definitely my favourite track this week. Hope you like it.  If you don't, you will find yourself on a slow boat to Guyana.

I can't choose between the 2 so what the 'ell its my birthday i'll do what I want! Here is Everything Fades to White it is just as good if not better.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 30/06/13 - Holy Ghost, Pixies, Black Sabbath, Fat Freddy's Drop, Caveman

Missed out on Glastonbury again? Don't worry, here's five tracks that were like eating falafel in our wellies this week and that's a good thing...

Shell Hunter:-
Pixies - 'Bagboy' (2013)

Boy, I never thought I'd hear a new Pixies single. Its been 9 years since they released any new material! I heard the announcement on the radio but got out of the car before they played it. I managed to find a little corner at work to play the YouTube video of a spotty oik smashing the place up and I really like it! I can't promise it'll be up there with the classics but its refreshing to hear a modern take of what makes the Pixies stand out. It sounds like its straight out of the 90s with its almost Faith No More guitar and beat assemble and Francis Black does the Talking Heads style shout really well. Its a little funkier than I remember them but I can welcome change.

Freebie Alert! Download the track from their official site here!
Old Pa's Corner :-
Fat Freddy's Drop - Blackbird (2013)

Don't know what it is but I seem to be listening to a lot of I suppose what you call chill. This is another one of theses tracks like my last weeks selection by Jon Hopkins that you can have on repeat and you will not get bored of it.  It has a nice laid back reggae dubby feel, if you know what I mean.

FFD are a New Zealand band and I am sure it was Flycasual who introduced them to me a good few years back. I have not really kept up with them, but after hearing several tracks from their new album Blackbird (2013). It is time for catch up.

London Scouser:-
Black Sabbath - 'God Is Dead?' (2013)

There's not much I could say about Ozzy and the Sabbath that hasn't been written many times over. Suffice to say, they're back with a new album called '13'. They've recruited former Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk and sound pretty damned tight.
I was watching Goldmember (Austin Powers 3) the other day and 'The Osbourne's' had cameo roles, I still can't believe the same guy who almost mumbles incoherently when he talks can sing so amazingly.....
Ozzy rocks..... Nuff said

Sfw:-
Caveman - 'In the city' (2013)

'In The City' is a sonic masterpiece that shimmers away in the background and has the ability to teleport your ears anywhere. Its heavy synth, constant beat and vocals that remind me any 1980's movie that featured Emilo Estevez, Rob Lowe and any other 'brat pack' members. So clench your fist, put on a leather jacket and enjoy!

Flycasual:-
Holy Ghost - 'Dumb Disco Ideas' (2013)

It has been a good summer for robots and disco so far, with Daft Punk and co nailing an absolute dance classic. So up step Brooklyn's Holy Ghost with their new single taken from their second album, Dynamics, out later this year. For fans of future disco, cowbells and singing droids, this is a great catchy track to get your C3-P-on.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 02/10/11

It's October and the summer's really arrived, here's our four pack of cool tunes to enjoy this week!

Flycasual:-
Fe La Soul by Amerigo Gazaway - 'Breakadawn' (2011)
Call off the search, I think I may have found my track of the year, it was free too! This is why we do it, scour the net, radio, magazines and albums to hunt for that gem and the thrill you get finding it. Like a musical Indiana Jones albeit minus the poison arrows and chasing natives. The brilliantly named, 8 track album, Fe La Soul sees Hip Hop producer Amerigo Gazaway, seamlessly blend the music of Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti with the impeccable rhymes of De La Soul. This track is a reworking of one of my favourite De La classics, 'Breakadawn', a real mellow and warming mix, perfect for a scorching October day!? I must have listened to this probably about 5 times, windows down, on the way to the royal grounds of Virginia Waters to 'rip shit up' with my longboard, well more shit than rip. Download the free album here, at Gummy Soul, well worth your time.

Shell Hunter:-
The Strokes - Machu Picchu (2011)

I always thought I should like The Strokes more. When their debut album "Is This It" came out in 2001, all my friends were absolutely mad on them. I liked all their singles but perhaps it was the musical snob in me, when they became so popular, it put me off. "Last Night" although a great indie rock song just reminds me of lots of sweaty blokes jumping up and down in the pub spilling their lagers all over me! That's why this track, was a breath of fresh Peruvian air! The plucky guitar has a bit of a reggae bounce to it, a perfect soundtrack to the last BBQ of the year. It'll have you humming along in no time and I just love the line Julian Casablancas(what a cool name!) sings, "I'm just tryin' to find a mountain I can climb." That's deep, brother!

Sfw:- Caveman - Thankful (2011)
Sorry about the rubbish video! This has been on repeat a quite a bit recently, I just love the lo-fi melancholy. They're from Brooklyn, NY and I don't know much about them apart from their website/myspace page. Get this song free from here!

Old Pa's Corner:-
Nick Lowe - 'Shame on the Rain' (2011)

Well, I have to say Nick Lowe is the same age as me and I will pay him the compliment that he is definitely growing old gracefully...musically speaking that is. I love this Country type ballad from his new album 'The Old Magic', it could be a song written and sung by Richard Hawley, it has that same sad melancholy feel of resignation, like a lot of RH songs. Nick Lowe had an album out in 2007 called 'At My Age' and it was undoubtedly one of my favourites of that year. An underrated talent.
