TRACKS OF THE WEEK 04/01/15 - Slaves, Torche, Ryan Bingham

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Three tracks to help forget your resolutions !

Flycasual:
Torche - 'Minions' (2014)

Here's a wee ditty to blow away dem Christmas cobwebs....detox? My arse! It's time to retox and damage your new speakers with Torche's latest trudge heavy riffage. 'Minions' is taken from the Miami band's fourth album, Restarter, out on Feb 23rd. Get the beers in!

Relapse Records

Sfw:
Slaves - The Hunter (2014)

The Christmas Decorations are down, no pay for four weeks and we all need a pick me up. Kent duo Slaves do it with a kick in the Plums and a slap around the ear hole with The Hunter. Singer/Drummer does a Johnny Rotten as good as the punk godfather himself. No butter for sale here, just pure punk. Time for that tattoo!

Old Pa's Corner:-
Ryan Bingham - Your Diamond is too Rough (2014)

I feel as if I stole this one from SFW. This guy has got all the ingredients, Beard, Guitar, a sad song. This ones for you SFW.
RB has a new album out in January and is called Fear and Saturday Night. Ryan has been described as Gravel-tongued and I suppose that fits him perfectly.
'Bingham wrote most of the album's 12 tracks alone in an airstream trailer, parked in the mountains of California without electricity or cell phones. The seclusion gave him creative clarity that resulted in songs inspired by an unstable childhood, and by the deaths of his mother to alcoholism and father to suicide.'

You can't beat a little bit of pain for that bout of creativity. I will be looking forward to his album, what, with titles such as 'Nobody Knows My Trouble' and 'Broken Heart Tattoos'  well that is right up my pain threshold.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 13/01/13 - Imagine Dragons, Congo Ashanti Roy andPura Vida, Torche, Stereophonics, Vinyl Williams

Five tracks to help fight off the January Blues!

London Scouser:-
Imagine Dragons - Radioactive (2013)

For my first foray into the realms of TOTW I believe I've found a corker. Las Vegas's Imagine Dragons have had success in their homeland and I think that with this track they are going to repeat the feat over here. I heard this for the first time at about 5am going into work and immediately had to track it down. Now the more I hear it the better it sounds. It has an epic feel about it despite it only being 4 minutes long. But what a great 4 it is. They are playing at The Forum on April 11th, I may check them out.
I won't say much about the video except for two things. 1 - it's really cool, especially seeing Lou Diamond Phillips & 2 - Shellhunter, you should not watch this. You have been warned

Old Pa's Corner:-
Congo Ashanti Roy & Pura Vida - 'Only Jah' (2012)

Roydel Anthony Johnson (born 12 April 1943), better known as Congo Ashanti Roy is a Jamaican singer best known as a member of The Congos but who also recorded solo and as a member of Ras Michael's Sons of Negus.
This track is taken from the album 'Hard Road'  and has been on my play list all this week. Oh boy! I need my reggae fix every now and again and this does it for me big time. It is the way I like my reggae and is a really consistent album all the way through. Pura Vida are a Reggae band from Belgiun by the way.

Flycasual:-
Torche - 'Harmonslaught' (2012)

I first heard this song just before Christmas, it was the perfect, unexpected headphones moment. At work, on a break, an opportunity to catch up on some tunes when this beast of a track comes on and blows me away and a few cobwebs in the process. I almost spat out a mouth full of donut all over the table it startled me so, it was exactly what I wanted to hear. Out of all the inane types of music categories, Torche have apparently been given the fortunate/unfortunate tag of 'Sludge Metal' which in the case of this song, with it's thumping drums and monstrous riff, I believe is especially apt. It makes me think of a fat troll trudging through a swamp with a belly full of Hobbits. A scene not too dissimilar to myself slogging through my local park on a traditional post Christmas lunch walk. I've been going through this ongoing Rock/Metal phase ever since Sfw introduced me to the Miami rockers through a song from their excellent 'Harmonicraft' album, which was featured on a TOTW last year. 'Harmonslaught' is their new single and is available on the Torche website here....

Shell Hunter:-
Stereophonics - 'In A Moment' (2012)

The boys are back in town and this latest single released at the back end of last year is intense! I heard it a few times on the radio and thought wow, these guys sound just like Nine Inch Nails with the constant industrial drone in the background and the rough guitar. I thought I'd better find out who it was and was surprised to see it was the Stereophonics' new single with the lush smokey voiced Kelly Jones back in full swing. A fresh new album called Graffiti On The Train due for release in March could hold a new edgy sound which will put the hairs on my chest! Download the track for free from the 'Phonics website here www.Stereophonics.com

SFW:-
Vinyl Williams - 'Inner Space'

This track by LA Based Artist & Musician, Lionel 'Vinyl' Williams has been tripping round my head all week. Call me bonkers, but can I say it takes you on a psychedelic sonic adventure in a way not to dissimilar to Hendrix's 1983 /Moon Turn the Tides from Electric Ladyland. On a lighter note, I think his name sounds Welsh and Lionel 'Vinyl' Williams would be a great name for a record store.

Old Pa's Corner :-
Thea Gilmore/Sandy Denny - London (2011)

The builder is in and I have not listened to new music for over 2 weeks now, he works best with BBC radio 2 on, so BBC radio 2 is on, all day, the kettle is on, all day. Eventually something comes through, the voice is vaguely familiar, I keep hearing this song?. Who is it by?  I can never catch who it is? It begins to annoy me, so I go on the the BBC radio 2 website,  all I have to go on is the line 'I want to be in London' There is a song on the A play list by Thea Gilmore and Sandy Denny, it shines out like a beacon. What was that song called? you got it 'London'.

'London' is from the album 'Don't stop Singing' from last year, I listened to that album and God forbid missed this one. (I keep missing them, just trying to listen to too much I guess). What a voice! Great job Thea and of course the writer of the song the late great Dame Sandy Denny.

As a footnote my midweek post regarding  perfect pop tunes, well, would you believe in the space of a couple of hours the recommended classics by the Swede and Singing Bear were all featured on Radio 2.

As they say, How cool it that!

SFW:-
Torche - Kicking (2012)

This great track by Florida rockers Torche features on their album "Harmonicraft" (which was released this week). It features melodic vocals, driving bass and so much guitar riffage, it would give Thor the hammer! RAWK! It's available free to download for free here or through http://www.torchemusic.com/

Flycasual:-
Cashier No 9 - 'Oh Pity' (2011)

I recently heard 'Oh Pity' on a Camden Crawl 2012  mixtape I downloaded free from 7Digital. (Camden Crawl, is the London Spring music festival to kick off the festival season, apparently), it was by far the stand out track and instantly had me hooked with it's melody and 'big sound'. In fact, maybe it's just me but I think it has this early 90's feel to it, a cross between Electronic and the psychedelica of Primal Scream, or something. That trademark 'big sound' is courtesy of fellow Northern Irish DJ/producer, David Holmes, who I'm big fan of, so big that I didn't realise he had produced last years Cashier No9's album, 'To the Death of Fun', from which 'Oh Pity' comes from. So not a new song but far too good to ignore. Yes, a pity as this would definitely have been one of my favourites of last year if it hadn't been so slippery and slipped through the net. Album downloaded, work journey sorted.

Shell Hunter:-
Santigold - Disparate Youth (2012)

This song literally caught me with my trousers down. I was trying on some jeans in H&M in the changing room and it came on. I had heard bits of it before but hearing it this time, I knew I liked it and needed to know what it was. Shazam to the rescue once again! Luckily no one barged into to the cubicle I was half dressed in, priorities are priorities! Santigold's album was just released a few days ago so I will definitely be having a listen. She has often been compared to M.I.A and mentions her influences are that of 80's pop and even Fela Kuti. She's got a good few collaboration's under her belt too including one with Amadou & Miriam that Flycasual featured on our Tracks Of The Week 08/04/2012!

Check out her website and sign up for a freebie download of her track 'Big Mouth' now here!
