Ryan Adams - Nobody Girl (2015)
I have been listening to the Live at Carnegie Hall album quite a bit recently and it captures RA at his acoustic best. This is version of Nobody Girl, which featured on 1999's Gold and was recorded at Carnegie Hall last year. There is no point explaining how I used to download bootleg recordings of hearing different versions of his material, because that is fairly obvious, right, we'll this captures perfectly my reasoning. If you are not an avid listener, do yourself a favour and get hold of the 10 track version, (the other is a 6 x LP version). I once read that listening to Adams is the equivalent of "giving your sadness a spa day". If that is true, why does he always leave me with a grin?

This track from Icelandic band Kaleo, has got the this weeks honour of giving me a High Fidelty moment of asking "who is this?". This four piece are popular in their home country and although I keep on thinking it is a new City and Colour single, they are starting to make a splash in the US with a tour and with Vance Joy and a deal with Atlantic Records.

Sea Wolf - Young Bodies (2014)
The excellent Sea Wolf, a.k.a. Alex Brown Church has become a bit of favourite of mine over the last few years. All of their material is great, but the Kickstarter funded, Song Spells, No. 1: Cedarsmoke is a bit special. The pay-what-you-want-album, should be looked as a limited edition masterpiece that gives fans (and the unconverted) a singer/songwriter at the top of his game. The only disappointing thing is that you cannot get it on vinyl! Do yourself a favour and download it via the official website.

Bon Iver - Wolves (Act I & II) (2008)
It is a day for sad songs. I was just catching up on "music news" and read that Justin Vernon's Bon Iver will be "winding it down" for an extended break. Whether that is a real breakup or a maybe-we'll-have-a-kiss-around-the-sheds-every-now-and-again ---- it is a sad day for fans of the winter loving maestro. Just in case you've forgot of his genius, give this a spin and you'll be out in the garden building a camp fire sooner than you can say Ray Mears.

Josh Rouse - Coat for a pillow (2015)
Josh Rouse is such an underrated songwriter. The Nebraska-born musician has been plugging away for years now and despite gaining a strong fan base, the lack of commercial success must play on the mind (and pocket). The industry has changed so much that unless you have a loop pedal and adolescence on your side, grafting is the only option. Rouse recently was quoted that his latest release, The Embers of Time, "..all kind of had this mid-life theme to them. I’m not 25 anymore. The music business and the entertainment business is tough to age in, ’cause you’re not new and not really old and cool. There’s just this desert in the middle you’ve got to get through.”".
If Josh Rouse is having a Mid-life crisis, what chance do I have?!? As someone in my early 40s, it is something that I can relate to and I'm dreading my next career change as time is not my side. Apart from a lottery win (never tell me the odds), I need to figure it all out or I'll be sleeping on the street.

There is some great stuff coming out of Canada. Take Aidan Knight. A 28 year old singer/songwriter that hails from Victoria, British Columbia. He is also the namesake of an experimental folk group that features Olivier Clements, Julia Wakal, David Barry and Colin Nealis.
After a week of disappearing into rural British Columbia and setting up in a cabin that lacked running water, they emerged with They arrived with 15 new songs and what would be the foundation of the band Aidan Knight’s album Small Reveal. You should give it a go!

I love having these "where have I been" moments. When you discover an artist that has been around for years but you never knew existed. Well meet Jim Guthrie. A Canadian singer/songwriter that has influenced people like Arcade Fire, Broke Social Scene and countless others. Nominated for a Juno award in 2003 and his 2013 solo album Takes Time was long listed for the Polaris Music Prize. I clearly know nothing, but then again, I can say I know now.

Gregory Alan Isakov - Light Year (2009)
If you are about to lose your mind, maybe that game of FIFA hasn't gone to plan and that vein on your head feels like its gonna blow like Krakatoa, this may be the perfect antidote. It features on his 2009 album, This Empty Northern Hemisphere and brought me back down the other the night. It was just what I needed, and stopped me going all Michael Douglas (Falling Down).

The Tallest Man on Earth - Dark Bird is Home (2015)
Trying to find time to listen to music, let alone post anything gets harder by the day. Fortunately a few things come on my radar every now and again. Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man On Earth, has been someone I've followed since his 2012 album, There's No Leaving Now, and it's nice to know that a new album, will be out in May. It is a fine reintroduction to the Swedish singer/songwriter and makes the wait and all my current distractions, worthwhile.

Radiohead - Gagging Order (2004)
I have to admit it, I'd forgotten all about this. There was a time (pre-spotify) when I'd buy everything by an artist and unless it caught me right (I.e. Kid kick in the nuts) it might just gather dust in my CD collection (yes, I have one still). It was a welcome surprise to hear this the other week on my iTunes randomiser. It features on COM LAG (2plus2isfive), a 2004 EP that was released in Japan and Australia which followed their album Hail to the Thief. Great stuff that reminds us all what Thom and the chaps can pull out of the bag when they stay away from drum and bass records

Courage - Villagers (2015)
Villagers — aka Conor O’Brien — have always been a favourite at the surgery. Melodic, intimate and intellegent, his latest release, ‘Darling Arithmetic,’ has him playing every instrument, recording and mixing it himself, at his home in Malahide, north of Dublin.
His previous two efforts, Awayland and Becoming A Jackal, are both Mercury-nominated successes. He now features a beard and could become a lookalike for actor James McAvoy, or vice-versa

Hiss Golden Messenger - Lateness of Dancers (2014)
Absence makes the the heart grow fonder! Having spent a few weeks away from the blog I am itching to get back into it. The last few weeks I have had the joy - if that is the right word - of parenthood. Time spent wiping bottoms, cleaning up and feeling exhausted makes me wonder how humanity has survived this long! Everyone tells you the same - say goodbye to sleep - and they are right! It's blinking exhausting! (Un)fortunately now I'm back in work which does mean my 4 hour commute does at least give me time to savor some music and not listen to nursery rhymes!!!
Lateness of Dancers is the title track of Hiss Golden Messengers 2014 release. Just listening to the intro will quickly take you to the MC Taylor's North Carolina porch. A perfect track to teleport you from this shi££y UK weather! Both album and live version here are cracking!

Elephant Micah, a.k.a.Joseph O'Connell, is a Indiana folklorist / singer-songwriter / multi-instrumentalist and mate of M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger. Despite not featuring a Beard, the folk singer has released a bit of a masterpiece in the shape of Slow Time Vultures. It is a great piece of American and features on his 2015 release, Where in the woods, whichwas recorded by O'Connell, his brother, session drummer Matthew O'Connell and long-time friend Bonnie "Prince" Billy. I recommend that you take a listen!

J Mascis - Wide Awake (feat. Cat Power) (2014)
Grunge godfather/Dinosaur Jr. frontman, J Mascis released this pretty little ditty with some help from Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) last year. It is a far cry from his signature distortion and fuzz but it has certainly got me interested in him again. I really like the run down guitar riff that he plays, but the fact that Chan Marshall has added her sultry tones makes my cheeks go a bit red. (face, not bum)

The stubble free, Tobias Jesso Jr., recently caught my attention with this stunning track. The Canadian manages to capture the essence of LA-LA land, with the magical Hollywood. A gentle start with a brutal finish, it subtlety shows how dreamers can be quickly destroyed in the magical city. This guy is good!

He's now back under his own guise with the stunning 'Love Like This'. With a European tour lined up in February, it is going to be a big year for Ry X, I cannot wait!

Daudi Matsiko - Houston in the Blind (2014)
Daudi Matsiko is one of my favourite recent discoveries. Fellow blogger, flycasual, put me onto his trail a few weeks ago and I've been playing this on repeat ever since. Houston in the Blind features on his EP, 'A Brief Introduction to Failure', that was released back in May. Gentle Folk to warm you on these cold winter nights, it has everything that you want in a new artist and it leaves you longing for more.

Despite is early connections with hip-hop (if that is what you can call it), his real strength is as a singer/songwriter and his indie/folk roots. December's Ghost demonstrates his talent and comparisons with Buckley are spot on. This features on his 2010 album, This Burning Ship of Fools. He's currently working on a new album via Pledge Music and is worth a punt - go on, pledge something - there's nothing better than supporting an artist!
