Into it.Over It. - The Shaking of Leaves (2014)

Tighten your coat, with this rubbish weather we are officially autumnal and I've spent the day cleaning the gutters so I thought this was a bit apt.  Into It. Over it is Chicago musician, Evan Thomas Weiss. Despite the title, the song is actually about the murder of one of Weiss' friends.  In particular the relief, joy and disgust of discovering the killer has been caught and eventually released due to a botched police job. Heavy stuff. Enjoy your day. Phew!

Fofoulah - 'Don't Let Mind Unravel, Safe Travel' feat Ghostpoet (2014)

Just the perfect song to have your Fruit and Fibre to this Sunday, Ghostpoet's lazy drone easing you in to the morning, not to mention the outstanding backing from the London quintet. Fofoulah have just released their self titled album and it's a innovative mix of traditional Gambian and Senegalese drumming (Wolof style) with modern synths and dub, a highly enjoyable album. Worth a second helping of cereal fo' sho'.

That's two TOTW in a row from Glitterbeat records....

Bob Dylan and Band - 'Royal Canal' (2014)

This is one of the many many gems you will find on The Basement Tapes Complete released next week as part of Dylan's Official Bootleg Series, now at number eleven. Most of the songs have been available ever since they were recorded in 1967. From what I have heard they have never all been heard in such great quality. After all they are only demos and not really meant for official release. 

This fabulous version of The Auld Triangle, renamed as The Royal Canal has long been a favourite of mine. Dylan's voice is at its very best and is complimented by excellent playing by The Band. They were probably still The Hawks when this was recorded. If the version of this on the new release is any better quality than this then I will be in 10th Heaven. 

Stop Press : I have just heard this from the album and it is listed as the The Auld Triangle and I am in 20th Heaven. Stunning quality.

Belle and Sebastian - 'The Party Line' (2014)

What more can I say other than... it's only a new bloody single from Belle & Sebastian. A week after the Foo's and I'm being spoiled again. It's got a great dancy feel to it and up there with the best stuff they've done. I've already bought tickets for their tour next year as I didn't wanna miss them. Their new album 'Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance' is out in January, so I already know it's going to be a good 2015!

The Coral - 'The Curse Of Love (Part 1)'

I got a bit excited when I saw there was a new release from The Coral and looking into it, I'm now more excited. According to Mr James Skelly, it isn't a 'new' album at all. It's the Lost album! It's compiled with previously unreleased tracks from between their 2005 album The Invisible Invasion and 2007 Roots And Echoes. I was quite into them back then so I'm hoping it's safe to say it'll be a definite hit.

This first offering I found quite suitable for the Halloween Weekend. It's a haunting waltz with The Coral's vintage sound. Perfect love song for the Day of the Dead!

WORLD MUSIC CORNER...

Ah Damon Albarn, a musical superhero! When he's not rescuing pop music, he's out in Africa discovering fresh musical talent with his Africa Express project. Maison Des Jeunes is the latest compilation and also the name of the youth centre in Bamako, Mali where Damon Albarn set his 'pop up' studio to recorded it in only a week. There he held an open invitation for new Malian musicians to perform with the likes of Brian Eno, Dave Maclean from Django Django, guitarist Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and London emcee, Ghostpoet amongst others (click here for a full list of collaborators). Mali is an unbelievably diverse and musically rich country which the album reflects, showcasing a new generation of stars recorded during that 7 day period and deservedly exposing them to Western ears. It's a musical delight and on heavy rotation with me at the moment, Ghostpoet and Songhoy Blues are among the many highlights.

There will be an exclusive featurette on BBC6 music of the story behind Maison Des Jeunes on Sunday 19th Jan at 1pm, all part of the radio station's African Music weekend (17-19 January 2013) . If you missed it and are reading this in retrospect in the year 2032, then click on the BBC6 Music website here to catch a podcast or something.

Songhoy Blues - 'Soubour'

This band hailing out of Timbuktu, formed in direct response to the Islamists who banned music whilst occupying their city only last year. It's an incredibly ferocius retort, loud,with an incendary riff and some amazing guitar work, a real powerful statement in protest. Ban This!

Ghostpoet - 'Season Change'

Here we have my favourite cup of tea toting rapper with the 'I can't be bothered' delivery, Ghostpoet teaming up with Bamako drum band, Doucoura, London bassman, Two Inch Punch and Damon Albarn for a low-key and atmospheric number with some immaculate percussion.

Jamie XX - 'Far Nearer' (2011)

I just love the sound of the steel drums on this track. Close your eyes and with a little imagination, you are on a sunny beach in the Caribbean, a 'cuba libre' in hand, a lithe, tanned girl by your side - Yes it is only a dream! Then the bass etc. comes in....this should be someone else enjoying this, but it is me enjoying this....I love this!.

I first heard about the 'XX' from 'Ma Boy' and was pretty impressed. I was even more impressed when the 'said' Jamie' had recorded with the late Gil Scott Heron. Listen all the way thru' here its a real gem.

Ghostpoet - 'Survive it' (2011)

'I just wanna live life and survive it'

Great, bleak, minimalist Hip Hop for the more mature discerning B-boy. 'Survive it' is taken from UK rapper Obara Ejimiwe, aka Ghostpoet's debut album 'Peanut Butter Blues and Melancholy Jam'. I can't help but feel there's an element of Buffalo Springfield in there with the background sample but maybe it's just me.

I guess the older you get your priorities change and it's less about drinking Cristal in clubs (for me that kind of lifestyle was getting tedious anyway) and more about walking around town with a cup of tea, in the dark just trying to get by (the video will explain).

Ghostpoet's style and delivery is not dissimilar to Roots Manuva, DELS or even, dare I say, Faithless' Maxi Jazz. Not your typical run of the mill MC, it's Hip Hop with the Blues and well worth investigating.

SFW:-Seasick Steve - Treasures (2011)

I first heard of Seasick Steve after his performance on Jools Hollands Hootenanny in 2007, but I thought he was bit of a gimmick (I was probably drunk!). I later picked up his album and quickly realised that he is the real deal.  This song features on his latest album 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks' and the slower tracks sound like Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash - which is fine by me!!
