BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN  - The Price You Pay

It is my second week on vacation with Shell Hunter and London Scouser. I should be in Thailand by now enjoying the Thai town atmosphere of  hustle buzzle noise of all the bars and the smell of garlic and coriander mixed with a faint hint of sewerage. Everybody has a smile, even when they are ripping you of for a few bahts. I love it all, especially the food.

Next week we will go away to Phi Phi Island. I was first there over 30 years ago when it only had one small hotel and beach huts. Now there are many hotels and it is pretty commercial. 

We have found a hotel far from the noise where there are only a couple of small beach restaurants run by the local sea gypsies. Fabulous.

It is one of my favourite spots in the world.  (from my limited experience)

Two great tracks from the Boss. The first is from his follow up album to my favourite Bruce album Darkness at the Edge of Town.  Its from the Double album The River and is absolutely brilliant. You could say it is his White Album.

The second selection is Bruce doing his  Big O Tribute. He trys to get the Roy Orbison feel and it is spot on as far as I am concerned.

Christmas was a time of over indulgence and it was in between scoffing mince pies and drinking mulled wine that I discovered this gem.  It is a cover of Bruce Springsteen's, "Drive All Night", from his masterpiece The River.  Hansard recruited Eddie Vedder on background vocals, Joe Henry and the late Clarence Clemons nephew, Jake, to play Saxophone.  Hansard & Vedder are no strangers to working together as the close friends played together on an acoustic tour last year and Hansard dueted with Vedder on "Sleepless Nights" from his 2011 album, Ukulele Songs.    Give it a few turns and it will get you listening all night.

The title reminds me of when I first met my wife.  She lived a few hours away and under the influence (of love), I would drive after to work to see her then early in the morning I'd head back to work.  The things you do....

Pional - 'Invisible / Amenaza (2013)

I heard this at the tail end of last year, during simpler times before the excess of Christmas and the musical carnage of Slade. It's a great piece of dark disco and sounds like it's taken from a 'so bad it's good' 80's action flick of bad suits, Uzis and pony tails. Pional is a Spanish singer/producer with a glowing musical CV and invisible/Amenaza is taken from the EP of the same name, out last Oct 13.

Wake Owl - "Candy" (2013)


I first heard of Wake Owl this time last year with their excellent gold and they are here a year later under the guide of 'super producer' Richard Swift.  It features on their debut LP, The Private World of Paradise, which is due out March 4th, by the way of Vagrant Records. Like it's namesake, Candy is just so good, so do yourself a favour, listen and have a treat!

Temples - Mesmerise (2013)

You may remember I featured Temples a year ago with their debut single Shelter Song (see the post here). This is their 4th single released in November last year and has just as juicy a 60's feel to it. You can't deny it is very Beatles and is obviously in keeping with their signature psychadelic rock sound. The riff also sounds like The Vaselines song 'Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam'. Perfect listening for shooing away those January blues and this miserable weather we are having.  Thankfully their debut album Sun Structures is out in February so that should nicely pacify me until I get some actual sun at the end of March! If I close my eyes tight enough, I can just picture myself on the beach right now!

Knifight - Black Daggers (2013)

For my first TOTW of 2014 I head back to Austin, Texas where Black Books (probably my favourite new band of 2013) also hail from. I came across Knifight after seeing they performed on the same bill as Black Books and decided to give them a try. Musically I would compare to Depeche Mode in their darker times and White Lies. They have a synth backing with a vocal that Ian Curtis would have been proud of. They released their debut album in 2013, 'Dark Voices' and on first listen it's not too shabby. I look forward to more from them.

Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad (2014)

Well only a week to go before thes Boss' new album is released. I have heard a few tracks and I have been very impressed with this track. The Ghost of Tom Joad has always been one of my favourite Brucie tracks. His ode to the depression era in the late twenties. This is the second track fromk the album we have featured.

The album has a talisman in Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine.  The Rage did a cover of the song (see a post of that here) which I thought was 'just ok' but this new version has both the hallmarks of the slow sparse original and the loud brash Rage version. You might say it is a cross between both and I think it works.

So I am saying this is my track of the year for 2014......so far anyway!. But a great start to the year.

Rage Against The Machine - 'Mindset's A Threat' (2013)

I'm a big fan of Spotify, since being introduced to it I've thrown away the shackles of my iPhone and haven't looked back since. When listening through my PC it looks at my listening history and offers tracks that I might like. This track is an example, after having featured RATM a few weeks back, Spotify suggested I listen to this which is on the 20th anniversary re-release of their debut album. It has a different less shouty vocal style by Zach which I like and features the trademark sound that made them famous.
A couple of days ago I decided (after putting it off for weeks) to clear the front path and garden of all of the billions of leaves that had congregated and needed something energetic to get me through it. This song and the whole album helped. The path is clear and 5 black bags and a bin full of leaves later I had my track.

Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes (2013)

Well it had to be Bruce this week. It is always an event when Mr Springsteen releases something new. The song is a 'new' version of a track previously released on the EP Blood Brothers (1995) and has been reworked and re-recorded and will be available for you tomorrow.

Here is a taster of the song "High Hopes" it appears there will be a brand new full-length album which could be released as soon as January.

What a start to next year! what! with Andy Murray making a come back too. I can hardly wait, I am just so excited. It's great to be alive!

There are several live versions available on YouTube as well as the 1995 version. By the way the song is not actually written by Bruce.

My opinion! ...well I am biased...but I love it, after a few hearings, it is encouraging for the new album...but that is me being...hopeful !

Maximo Park - 'Brain Cells' (2013)

I usually get worried if an artist I like change their style for a new release but this has really grown on me. This new song from Maximo Park makes me feel like joining the hoody bloke for a bit of a rave up! Sombre, haunting but with a clubby edge, I'm liking this different approach. They are due to release their 5th album, Too Much Information next year and will be matching that with a Tour. Free stuff alert! The lads have generously allowed a free download of Brain Cells for the trade of your email address for future news. Fair trade me thinks! Get in there my son!

Fractures - Cadence (2013)

  

Fractures is Australian multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/producer, Mark Zito.  Zito was involved in a near-fatal fall which left him confined to a neck-brace for three months but he obviously used this hiatus wisely, writing this eargasmic track with its similarities to James Blake, Astronauts and Stateless.  One to watch!

Baloji and L’Orchestre De La Katuba - 'Buy Africa' (2013)

It has been a cold week and this track was like the musical equivalent of thermal pants, warm and comforting. That may sound a bit disparaging but far from it as Afrobeat's infectious grooves does have that kind of effect on you. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Red Hot and Fela album from where 'Buy Africa' is taken from, featuring a favourite of mine, Congolese/Belgian rapper, Baloji (see post here) and L'Orchestre De La Katuba, providing some brilliant vintage soukous guitar. The AIDS organisation, Red Hot, have released a fitting tribute to the Nigerian Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, who would have been 75 this October had he not died of the disease in 1997. An album of Fela classics, covered and interpreted in their own way by a number of top US and African artists....recommended listening.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Born To Run (1984)

Back when Frankie Goes To Hollywood first burst onto the scene in the early 80's I was a young lad, and wasn't very clued up on innuendo and naughtiness so when I saw the poster for their single Relax, I didn't really think too much of it. I do however vividly remember seeing it when I went on a school trip to London to visit the British Telecom Museum (did I know how to live or what). There were loads of posters up everywhere, what must the BBC's Mike Read have thought !!

Is this controversial ??

My brother got the album Welcome To The Pleasuredome for Christmas in 1984 and I remember listening to it and loving Born To Run. It wasn't  until years later I found out it was a cover. Even then I was a covers fan, without really knowing it !!!

My other memory of the band from back in the beginning was when the video for Two Tribes was banned for god only knows what reason. Maybe that's where Mike Tyson got the idea to bite Evander Holyfield's ear off. One day at school I felt like I was the luckiest person in the world. I was probably only in the 2nd or 3rd year of seniors when I got invited (I don't know by who but who cares !!) into the 6th form common room. This was totally unheard of, and to us lowly non 6th formers, it was like getting into Fort Knox or Hugh Hefner's pad. When you saw the inside of the common room, you were accepted, you were cool, you were hanging out with the big boys instead of being ignored. Looking back now it could almost be a little suspect. A 12 or 13 year old boy being invited by a 17 year old to watch a banned video in a darkened room at an all boys school but I'll be buggered if it worried me then. Watching it now it seems very tame, my how the times have changed

NERD ALERT! - At the height of their fame, they featured in their very own computer game, which I bought and played (only once if I remember, as it was a bit pants) on my spectrum.

NILS LOFGREN - Keith Don't Go(1975)

There was a time when Nils was the hottest property around, he had a couple of albums that were nothing short of immaculate. His first solo album the self titled 'Nils Lofgren' (1975) contained fabulous guitar based ditties, they were melodic and had superb guitar work all the way through. 'Keith don't Go' was probably the highlight and this is a drawn out version showcasing the talent of Nils. It is a must see. This is one of the great all time riffs. What's your favourite riff! then?

I shared a house in 1974 with a guy and I had earlier introduced him to Led Zeppelin. Was that a mistake? You bet it was! he became obsessed with them. He played them all the time, he talked about them all the time, he even wore Led Zeppelin T-shirts, the sad bastard. Did he not know the rules. It is never cool to wear the T-shirt of the group that you love.

It got to the stage I could not listen to Zep anymore he had put me completely off. It was his group, he had discovered, them they were exclusively his.

A year or so later (I was married then) .We both went to Nottinghill Gate (on a release day)  to brouse through all the second hand record shops there. In one shop, there it was 'Phisical Graffiti' (1975). It had got brilliant reviews, I was wavering, I wanted it. He grabbed it and I had to bite the bullet, but next to it, shining in all its glory was Nils second album 'Cry Tough(1976)' I casually picked it up it. I was satisfied, my cravings were fulfilled.

It was brilliant and this track blew me away as it still does today. After the guitar solo in the middle you are simply left breathless with pleasure.

Thursday I'm in love....a chance for me to get primal.... 

Rage Against the Machine - 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' (1997)

Ah camping....mud, earwigs and chemical toilets, donning Ray Mears safari shorts, equipped with a piece of string and the ubiquitous Swiss army knife, it's chance again to be man vs wild...the great outdoors, you can't beat it can you?! I'm just after spending four nights away, doing just that in a field near Ringwood, Dorset, lovely pitches clustered around fire pits separated by dreamy grasses and wildflowers....playing football or Frisbee with my 3 year old son whilst my adoring wife looks on...the ideal. However two of those precious days away were literally dampened by lashings of incessant rain and wind, huddled together in our tent, trying to keep dry, finding innovative ways in keeping a testing toddler at bay and high level diplomacy to avoid bickering with my wife. Fantastic...

Rage Against the Machine are not going M**********G camping!!

Prior to that most inconvenient period of British Summertime weather, were two days of the best camping has to offer though. A highlight was supping wine and cooking a BBQ around a campfire until late in the evening, with pretty much the reign on the campsite as the majority of the weekend campers had departed. This also allowed my wife to wear her Primark 'snow leopard' rompasuit in confidence...all above aboard I can assure you! Despite that distraction all I could think about what was 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' and the line, "I'm sitting here in the campfire light...." and humming the tune with all the rage of a rain soaked Zach De La Rocha whilst the sausages simmered like Tom morello' guitar. Originally a classic Bruce Springsteen ballad, Rage Against the Machine do it justice with their tension fuelled cover, creating a real power house of a protest song.

How do you cover Blonde on Blonde Dylan's Iconic masterpiece from 1966. There are so many great covers to choose from. I was caught between covers that sound like the original or covers that are completely different or simply the bizarre and there are quite a few of them. I decided to play it safe and went for the first one that hit me as I went through all my files of each song. (I may do a bizarre covers of B on B at a later stage).   The problem with B on B is that there are classics and they have many many covers of them and there are the less popular tracks where I have only found 2 or 3 covers. Anyway, I hope you like my choices, I am sure some may not be to your liking  and I am sure you may have chosen some others. Let me know what you think

JIMMY BUFFET - Rainy Day Woman # 12 & 35

Don't really know too much about Jimmy Buffet but this is a live recording, Live at Nissan Pavilion, Bristow, VA on 8/30/08. It  has the same playful feel of the original so I have gone for it.  Tom Petty and Lenny Kravitz were contenders.

LUTHER JOHNSTON - Pledging My Time

Again I am not familiar with Luther Johnston, this is one of the less covered songs but I liked this immediately, it has that edgy feel of the original, it can be found on "All Blues'd Up - Songs Of Bob Dylan" (Tangled Up In Blues)(1999). Duke Robbilard, was my only other option, both are great takes but Luther edged it.

MARIANNE FAITHFUL - Visions of Johanna

I have always loved Marianne Faithful from the early sixties and I think she deserves the  honour of 'Visions of Johanna' which is in my top few Dylan tracks. There are several other great takes but I'm going for this one. Gerry Garcia and the Boys were hard to leave out. Maybe I better do a Volume 2 or should I say 'Blonde and Blonde Covers Revisited'. The MF take can be found on her album 'Rich Kid Blues' (1971)
There are a couple of other Dylan Covers on that one as well.

MICK HUCKNALL - One of us Must Know

I have always loved this song and have quoted it to death through out the years. This may be a surprising choice but believe it or not there are not too many covers out there. I have only 5 in my file. The Boo Radleys were a close second, but I think the production did it for Mick. It is taken from the outstanding (well in parts) 'Chimes of Freedom'(2012)

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - I Want You

Yet another classic and I went for an original take by the Boss, a much different and slower version but it loses none of the magic. I was almost going with Steve Gibbons but changed my mind at the last minute.

The Big Pink - 'Give It Up' (2012)

Although I sort of liked a couple songs from The Big Pink's first album, I didn't take them very seriously for some reason. This song which I heard in the week, has really changed my mind. I love the hip hop undertones, piano and brass combination. Before the vocals came in, I actually thought it was a nice 70's throw back! It looks like I will definitely enjoy the slightly different direction of their new album, 'Future This' which was released on 16th January. 'Give It up' hasn't been released as a single but I have a feeling it might in future and will be sure to get more skeptics like me on side. Check out the single(this version is remixed by Forest Swords) previously released from Future This, 'Hit the Ground (Superman), below and download it for free! Result!

The 2 Bears - 'Bear Hug' (2011)

This honey pot of a track has been quite a hit around the club circuits over the last few months, I should know cause I've been larging it. Actually I haven't and feel queasy at the thought of all nighters, with work and parenting the only larging is largely done in bed.  The 2 Bears is a side project from Joe Goddard, of geek chic electronic maestros, Hot Chip along with DJ Raf Daddy and 'Bear Hug' is taken from their forthcoming album, Be Strong out on January 30th. Now some people may Pooh Pooh this track as a bit of a novelty record but they're not taking themselves too seriously, it's fun, catchy and more importantly my 2 and half year old son likes it. Besides it doesn't really matter when they can make dance music of this quality.

I seem to be having a manic 2012. Work seems to be consuming all my time and I'm finding it very difficult to promote the blog, listen to new music, and enjoy it all.  This blogging lark isn't easy and it's hard to get 'new' listeners, let alone win them over. So when I noticed that Real Estate's latest video release featured a 'street team' it made me want to drive around my local town and drop @TuneDoctor business cards all over the place - unfortunately for me/us - I live so far out in the wilds of Wales that these will probably only get people asking when the surgery is opening. Bruce Springsteen - 'Highway 61 Revisited' (1995)

Bruce has done some really great Bob covers, in fact he has been responsible for one of my favourite Dylan covers ever and I will feature it in a later Post, when I will  'Open up the gate for you'.  I bet all you 'Dylan freaks' out there can guess what it is ? If not you will have to wait patiently. In the meantime enjoy these two great performances, Bruce is on fire.
