Blur - 'Coffee & TV' (1999)

 

In most forms of entertainment you get sequels. Books, films, games & TV shows have them but you don't seem to get them in music. However, I believe I've found one in the case of these two songs.
I remember first hearing 'Coffee & TV' and thinking "Blimey, Damon sounds a bit weird on this one" and then came the video with its cartoony milk carton trying to find the singer of the song. And of course we know its not Damon, but guitarist Graham Coxon. It was the first time I'd heard him sing and I was impressed. So much so that I've bought quite a few of his solo albums over the years.

He's had some standout tracks, but my personal favourite is 'Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery' which to my limited musical brain sounds like it's picked up from where 'Coffee & TV' ended. The video for this probably cost about £37.50 to make as it's essentially Graham playing guitar and singing in a park somewhere with a small dog (dachshund maybe ??) watching him. A woman falls from the sky (maybe those special effects alone will bump it up to a £50 cost) and dances badly. The ending is almost a payback as he is discarded by the woman and dog in much the same way as 'Milky' the milk carton was in 'Coffee & TV'.

Blur - 'Go Out' (2015)

First of all, thank you to all who sent their best wishes for Ripley's arrival on Old Pa's Calexico post last week! Its been both the longest and shortest week ever. Living our lives in 3 hour bursts between feeds, not knowing what day it is or even caring, eating when we are hungry no matter if its 2am and feeling elation to frustration in half a second all come part and parcel with being a new parent. But we've reached our first milestone, a week! Our next big event is tomorrow where we will do the title of the latest single from Blur, Go Out. We are off to register her birth! Go Out is the first single to be released since 2003 and its like they have picked up where they dropped off. It couldn't be more Blur if it tried! The guys are older, wiser and it can only spell great things to come from new album The Magic Whip, due on April 27th. This is one happy Blur fan right here.

Muse - 'Psycho' (2015)

Shell Hunter was very much otherwise engaged as I wrote this a week ago, as she was in labour with our first child. In the background was our playlist of tracks to take her mind off of the pain from the contractions, I remembered that Muse has a track called 'New Born' so I searched for them on Spotify and was pleased to see they had a new track... It should probably come with a government warning, not to include on baby playlists, but regardless I bloody love it. Its got a trademark Muse riffage but sounds to me like the one that got away from Marilyn Manson. I can't wait for their new album based on this also!

Ryley Walker - Sweet Satisfaction (2015)

I have heard two tracks from the album Primrose Green (2015) the new album by Ryley Walker and I am really impressed. Some of the influences that he is being associated with is rather impressive, but I would say entirely justified. How about Van Morrison, Tim Buckley, Bert Jansch and Pentangle.

This really excellent stuff. I await with great anticipation for the complete album out at the end of the month.

Tobias Jesso Jr. - 'How Could You Babe' (2015)

Vancouver's Tobias Jesso Jr almost gave up music a few years back after a luckless spell in LA (the song, Hollywood takes an extra significance) and it's to everyone's benefit that he didn't. His debut album, Goon, was released earlier this month and contains a spectacular array of Lennon-esque songs on love and heartbreak. 'How Could You Girl', is my current weapon of choice to give my heart a kicking.

Laura Marling - False Hope (2015)


I am quite enjoying Laura Marling's heavier vibe, the track features on her new album, short movie, which is singers fifth album in seven years. She produced the album herself, which probably explains the change of direction. Like a hybrid of PJ Harvey meets Pearl Jam, the Hampshire born singer has now returned to England (after spending quite a bit of time in the US) and her new album is a clear reflection of that.

There's nothing better than gazing up in awe and seeing a fantastic array of glistening stars on a clear night, one of the many benefits of living in Camberley. I have on many occasion, been in mid conversation with my husband getting out of the car behind him and am dumbstruck by the friendly familiarity in certain constellations...Orion and the Big Dipper. I am left standing in the car park in some kind of Sky at Night Stupor! The only reason I know so many star names is because of this sparkly number. I was always impressed with the lyrics of this track from Blur, the way the star names rolled off the tongue and flowed like poetry. It's a crime in a way that it is so short but in another way it's great because I was able to sneak it onto almost every car mix tape I made. When there wasn't enough room on the end of the side for a full song, I always slipped this one on which fitted perfectly every time! 

Darwin Deez - 'Constellations' (2009)

I wasn't sure of Darwin Deez at first. The first single I heard was 'Radar Detector' and that grated on me a bit as it became overplayed, but as soon as I heard this, I loved it. Being a wannabe astronomy geek, one mention of 'constellations' and that's it! It reminds me of a BBQ I had earlier this year with a group of friends from work. Once the sun had finally set and the candles were lit, it was all eyes on the sky. Not everyone's idea of fun but good old DJ Biltong Man (his guest posts here) had an app on his iPhone to monitor the progress and whereabouts of the NASA Space Station. With a few huffs and puffs from the non enthusiasts, we all waited for it. There was much speculation as to which moving 'spec' it was, mostly which plane it wasn't! Sure enough, it was spotted rising from the horizon, a smooth moving and surprisingly bright and swift light. Amazing to think there are a few guys up there living off dehydrated food packs and vacuum toilets. Not so glamourous but the view must be to die for. It makes you feel rather small and insignificant. Whilst looking for the station, myself and another friend saw a shooting star! It reduced us to dithering idiots awing and cooing. I'm not ashamed to say it was pretty awesome!

Public Image Ltd - 'One Drop' (2012)

It was just by chance that I heard this song of PIL's new album, their first since 1997, but I am glad I did. You think of Mr Rotten these days in his check suit and running after cows and chasing busty farmers wives with his love of creepy crawlies and a certain type of butter. Slippery if you ask me!

But this is rather good with its Reggae driving beat. I have listened to the album 'This is PIL' and it is really good. The boys have definitely not lost it. Johnny has regained his cred in my book. But wait a minute half way through the video he is at it again....chasing sheep!

Get me out of heeeeeeere!

Blur - 'Under The Westway' (2012)

Can you believe it's been 21 years since Blur popped up onto the music scene with their catchy, easy to sing a long to ditties. They've come a long way, their sytle often changing direction here and there with Damon Albarn's clever and sometime experimental vision. This song is a very grown up Blur which I love, created especially as part of 2 new songs for the Hyde Park Olympics closing ceremony (Under The Westway and The Puritan). I can picture it playing along to a montage of winning or exasperated faces, it's got the drama! It's also got lyrics that we Londoners would appreciate, if you listen hard enough....rain, traffic, and still standing at last call!

Peaking Lights - 'Beautiful Son' (2012)

This is an absolute beauty of a track from Peaking Lights (I love the guitar solos), the Wisconsin based husband and wife team responsible for some serious dubbed out dreamy soundscapes and is dedicated to their one year old son. I'm not the sentimental type but as a doting dad, it's hard not to be moved by this, despite the fact that my very own 3 year old son keeps making his parents extremely grumpy by waking at 05:30 every morning....without fail. 

Peaking Lights apparently started out so they could pay for petrol to visit a musician friend in San Fransisco but their self produced, home released material has gained them many fans. Stopping at a garage on the next trip, all they'll have to worry about now is remembering the baby wipes and whose turn is it to get the crisps in. .

'Beautiful Son' is taken from the new album, Lucifer which follows on rather nicely from their equally excellent debut.

Metermaids - 'Graveyard Shift' (2012)

Ask anyone that knows me and they'll tell you that I wouldn't usually pick a Hip Hop track as my TOTW, but this is a tuunne!

Brooklyn duo Metermaids have created a song that feels like an Old-Skool classic with it's catchy guitar riffs sing-a-long chorus'.  It's Produced by 9th Wonder and after only a few listens feels like a one of my favourites of the year. Download it free from RCRD lbl
