The Beatles - A Day in the Life

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

THE PRINCE OF FORREST HILLS
bound by the Arab Strap

THE BEATLES - A Day in the Life

Sometimes when you actually find out where lyrics come from it is a bit of a disappointment. Take for example the line Four thousand Holes in Blackburn Lancashire. Lennon saw this in a newspapers referring to pot holes.

Another interesting one is a line from Dylan's Desolation Row, quote : They are selling post cards of the hanging. This was something that actually happened in the twenties in Dylan's home town of Duluth. Some black men were hung in a street corner after supposedly raping a white women. Pictures were taken and they were made into postcards. Pretty sick!

Flycasual was on a trip with his work to the Gulf and he told me he was going to meet the Crown Prince of Bahrain. I was very impressed and came up with this. Below it, is the actual meaning. Not quite as exotic.

THE PRINCE OF FORREST HILLS

You travel by Lear Jet
To the Jewel in the Persian Gulf
Courted by Kings
The Crowned Prince comes to meet you
You dine with their Captains

Your wife is a Princess
Who came from the North
Your father is a poet
In the land of Iberia
Your mother's veil
Hides the mysteries of her past

Your sister her culture in Mayan lore
Her baby touched by the aliens
Her husband bound by the Arab Strap

Brought up in a City within a City
Nourished by the foods of Al Baik
You woke to the the sounds of the Prophet's song
You gave blood to the silver disc

You thrash and grind with the Lords of Dogtown
Your perennial garden with its eternal bloom

Your are the Price of Forrest Hills

Travel by Lear jet. It was actually a Canadair jet not quite as exotic.
He did actually meet the Crowned Price but the Captains were actually the Captain of the plane and he had dinner with him .
Wife a Princess, well his wife comes from Blackpool, up north init.
Father wishes he was a poet and lives in Spain. Mother was born in Egypt.
Sister has a pet Chihuahua called Maya and she was married in Mexico. Her baby is called Ripley of Alien fame. Her husband's favourite band is Belle and Sebastian. The Boy with the Arab Strap is one of their best songs. If you don't know what an Arab Strap is, best you check it out. (sorry London Scouser)
City within a City is Saudia City in Jeddah. Prophet's song is waking up to the sound of morning prayer call.
Al Baik is local broast chicken the best ever.
Gave blood for money at the local hospital then down to the CD shop to spend the money.
Lords of Dogtown, best film about skateboarding. Last line regarding gardens, well he like his garden.
Forrest Hills is part of his address.
Nothing is as it seems.

I was going to finish it with and after 6 pints he goes for a kebab but maybe that would spoil the effect.

DYLAN COVERS # 197 The Beatles/Phil Ochs/Lucinda Williams - Positively 4th Street

WHAT A DRAG IT IS

THE BEATLES - Positively 4th Street

Here are some interesting ones. First up is none other that The Beatles themselves doing a little warm up by doing Positively 4th Street. Pity about the quality and it is a shame the version is not longer. This can be found on Let It Be Rehearsals Vol 2.

Now this is really good, especially as it is rumoured that Phil may well be one of the influence why Dylan wrote the song. It is also relevant, as at one point Bob apparently threw Phil out of his car (not literally. This is well documented in the book Positively 4th Street,  a must read. The short track is on
Hero of the Game - Live  New York Radio Broadcast 1965.

Finally one of my favourite covers and this is a version by Lucinda Williams and can be found on Bottom Line Archive Series Vol 1

UB40/Bob Dylan - I Want You

OLD PA'S CORNER

GREIG STREET BRIDGE
The Bridge

UB40 - I Want You (2014)

I have aways liked UB40. I have always liked Ali Campbell's voice but this new version of Dylan's I want You is quite frankly unnecessary.

GREIG STREET BRIDGE (I Want You)

I am crossing Greig Street Bridge
in Inverness on my bike
i am going to Chisholm the Chemist
on Castle Street Hill
i work for the Chemist in Greig Street
i am 16 teen
i work for a couple of hours
after School.
my little transistor

as always
is stuck to my ear
I Want You comes on
it is from Dylan's new album
i think it is called Blonde on Blonde
i have got another track
 on my tape recorder
but I don't know what that is called
something about a Sad Eyed Lady
i taped it from radio Luxembourg
it was a bit crackly
i only managed to get a couple of
verses
i am a Dylan fan
ever since I heard The Time they are a Chanin'
on the Radio
I want You is different
not like his last album
seems more commercial
but I love it and want to hear it
again
i will have to get hold of the album
i dont' have a record player
but I will get it
it is released next week

I hear on the Radio
Dylan had a motorbike accident
is he alive?
he and Cassius Clay are my Hero's
i like the Beatles too
what is happening to Dylan?
what is going on?
i wish i new?.

Here is the original in all its glory

The Beatles - I'm so Tired/Happiness is a Warm Gun

SHE HAD A BIRDS NEST IN HER HAIR

 THE BEATLES - I' so Tired (1968)

The Birds Nest

I walked into the pub
i had not seen her for years
there was that familiar feeling
deep in my guts
she could still bring it out
she still had that power
we briefly kissed

she removed her dark glasses
her eyes were bruised
her lips were swollen
she look tired almost beat
there was no sparkle in her eyes

he was abusing her
he was beating her
how could anyone
harm my fragile angel
that bastard should hang

he should be fed to isis

she begged me to stay
she could not be alone
she held me tight
the whole night
as if  I were her life she was holding

i put her on a plane the next day
she needed her home

her kin
time to rest
she needed time to recover

a few weeks later she called
she had two tickets for our idol
he was playing Earls Court

i still had her copy of Blonde on Blonde
i never returned in the sixties
when she was a child
and i was just a child
when we loved like the wind
like flowers in the wind

we went to see our idol
she had regained her joy
she looked so beautiful
i could not take my eyes away from her
her smile lit up the Court

she had a birds nest in her hair

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 10/11/2013 - The National, Royal Blood, The Beatles, Franz Ferdinand, Keane

Five tracks that had us turning them up to 11...

Shell Hunter:-
Keane - 'Higher Than The Sun' (2013)

Cor blimey, has it really been 10 years since Keane first popped onto the scene? I loved their meloncholy piano based anthems. This month they release The Best Of Keane which is a lovingly crafted collection of all their singles including 2 new tracks. One of which is this one which I couldn't stop singing for the life of me the other day. If it has a hook that strong then they've still got it, which is a shame as the band have decided to 'take a break from being Keane' to persue other projects. Either way, I look forward to revisiting all their great ones namely favourites of mine like Bedshaped, Everybody's Changing and Spiralling. I'm still keen after all these years.....sorry!

Sfw:-
The National - 'Lean' (2013)

Am I breaking the rules? Only last week London Scouser had The Nationals Sea of Love as his TOTW and they are back again with Lean. In my defence this is hot off the press and features on the latest Soundtrack fro The Hunger Games - Catching Fire. I've read that they originally refused the track because the title was deemed "too dark", it was called "Dying Is Easy". Anyone who has seen the first film (or read the books) will raise a wry smile due to the irony of it all. The film franchise is about "fighting to the last" and features kids, killing kids. Dark as hell.

Flycasual:-
Royal Blood - 'Out of the Black' (2013)

I read recently that these Brit hot Rock prospects have been likened to early Muse and Queens of the Stone Age, "I'll have some of that!" I thought and I wasn't to be disappointed. The parallels justified, as the Brighton duo's debut single has all the hallmarks of such Rock royalty, big sound, great drumming and ferocious riffage but they'll probably be sick and tired of those comparison and will want to concentrate on their own sound. Ooh there's a bit of Jack White in there too I thought. Either way it's all good and it has left me wanting more. As well the single, they also have another track available on their Soundcloud site which you can catch here. Royal heirs indeed.

Royal Blood's domain here...

London Scouser:-
Franz Ferdinand - 'Evil Eye' (2013)

I don't normally watch adverts on the tv if I can help it. I push fast forward on the sky remote to x30 and try and stop it in time for when the program starts back. The other day I couldn't find the remote in time and for once I was glad. An advert came on for some new car and immediately I stopped looking for the remote and watched it. This song was selling the car (obviously not well enough cos I don't know what car it is) and I loved it immediately. Straight away I thought it was Franz Ferdinand and after shazam-ing the track I was right. It's got their almost trademarked catchy guitar style with Alex Kapranos' great vocals. I just saw the video (which looks like a low-budget slasher style from the 70's or 80's) for the first time and if you're squeamish I don't recommend it !!! I wish I'd chosen this last week as it would have been a great Halloween track.

Old Pa's Corner:-
The Beatles - 'If I Fell' (2013)

Well it just had to be done. It is not very often we have a new Beatles release. This is a track from  On Air, Live at the BBC vol 2. (2013).  I don't know if it is all that relevant considering there is nothing much new here and there are much more superior versions available. But completest will gobble this release up and why not.

There must be some great stuff in the vaults which would warrant a release and I hope they get round to doing it someday.

However, in the meantime here is  If I fell  a track originally on a  Hard Days Night  one of the best rock movies ever with a fabulous soundtrack. It's all about the melody folks!

Belle & Sebastian - The Boy with the Arap Strap

Old Pa's Wednesday Club

Don't like yours!!

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN - The Boy With the Arab Strap (1989)

I did a post a few weeks back about making up compilations for Old Ma, they were called 'Michele Friendly'.

Compilations have always been a big part of my life, I started with cassettes in the early seventies, the first series was what I called  'All Time Greats',  I thought of an artist and would get hold of what I thought was the best track by that artist. Not always easy back in those days.

It was usually quite straight forward. For example Procol Harum would be a Whiter Shade of Pale, The Byrd's and Mr Tambourine Man, Led Zeppelin with  A Whole lot of Love,

"Hold on" you may say, but what about Stairway to Heaven? But it was my choice and I did try to be as fair as I could be.

I continued with the task until a few years ago, but have not updated the file for several years. The file of MP3s is now over 32gb. I did relent and later I included all the best tracks for each artist. It was my labour of love. The Beatles and Dylan files, went into the hundreds.  If any stranger came round and music was required, it was easy to slip on some ' All Time Greats' as eventually your were bound to get a 'hit'.

There were compilations for the Best of the Month, compilations for going on Holiday, compilations for World Cups and compilations for Weddings, Funerals, anything . Probably one of the best was  Don't Like Yours, shortened to DLY.

This started because, when we all came back from the pub or a meal out, we always had to play music and we all wanted to be first to get our tracks on.

This developed into 3 each, when you selected 3 tracks, then the next person selected their 3 tracks and so on. It meant that there was no 'hogging' the music.

If you went to the toilet or left the room when somebody else's tracks were on, well that just was not done and was frowned upon and could even result in missing a round of three.

The DLY was great, we each selected say 5 tracks, we sometimes had themes or you had to include an oldie. We ended up having many DLY Cd's which could easily be slipped on when we were all together. This stopped all the talk about 'hogging'.

I suppose Tune Doctor was a bi-product of this.

Each Christmas we all prepare our best 20 tracks of the year and we play them on random on Xmas Day and News Years day. This is also always met with great fan fair and excitement.

If we go on holiday together, well we always chose 4 or 5 tracks each and then we can play the official holiday Tape/CD/MP3, (what ever makes you comfortable) when we are in each others room for pre-evening or after anything. We have on tap, music we will all love, apart from London Scouser's of course.

I chose Belle and Sebastian, as this was a track on an early DLY which was not my track, but one from London Scouser and I loved it.

By the way I don't like Yours.

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - The Beatles - 'And I Love Her'

I'm a big fan of the "All Inclusive" holiday once in a while. You don't need to worry about carrying cash around and you have have everything you could ever need for a complete holiday in one place: restaurants, pools, pool bars (especially swim up ones), private beaches, evening entertainment and lots of activities. The thing is, with everyone staying in the one place, you begin to recognise poeple and even, God forbid, socialise with them! This is not usually my choice and I prefer to keep myself to myself but when London Scouser, Old Pa & Ma and I get together on holidays namely at the swim up bar, we seem to attract people. Probably because we are quite obviously enjoying ourselves drinking and taking the piss out of people amongst ourselves. We end up getting involved and get to know a handful of misfits whose real names we cant remember but are given better names.

Hey Paul, aren't those the same trunks as yours?
The last lot who we are still talking about were Scholesy (a fat but very nice northerner who we saw wearing a Scholes football shirt the first day), Previous Previous (a rather annoying woman on holiday with her new beau with a couple of kids from previous relationships) and Elvis & Elvis (an extremely odd looking couple with his and hers Elvis quiffs. I think only one was intentional though). These are people who we would never normally talk to and will never keep in touch with but keep us amused and can contribute to making a memorable holiday.

In the evenings (if you can make it that far), it is the best opportunity for people watching. This is like the cat-walk of Primark and Matalan and damn it, there is someone with the same shirt or dress as you! We sit at the main bar, watching people and discussing what they are probably like and guessing their stories. "Oh they are probably on a wife swapping holiday....that lot look like they've used their injury benefit payout on this 4 star holiday but they are the ones doing paragliding and rock climbing....look at those two, they are not even talking to each other..." I would hate to ever find out what people would be saying about us but at the same time, if it contributes to them having as good a holiday as I normally have doing it, so be it!
I reckon he's having an affair with his brother's wife....

I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles but I like a lot of their stuff and appreciate how massive an impact they made on music. Strangely this is one of my favourite tracks because it always reminds me of All Inclusive holidays. I remember the heat of the evening just after it goes dark when all the hotel ground lights ping on. I love the almost weekend buzz feeling as everyone has their shower and gets dolled up after a day in the sun. In the main bar area you either get music playing over the speakers or an inoffensive band with keyboard etc playing a handful of well known songs sang in Spanish accents. This is one of the songs I remember hearing and singing along to whilst we discussed a few chavs at the other side of the room over cocktails. God, I could do with a holiday like that now!

WEDNESDAY CLUB - The Beatles - Your Mother Should Know

MIDWEEK CRISIS who can you ask, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB but don't ask me! ask your mum

An extra one this week in place of your usual Tuesday Blues !!!

Perfectly Loud

THE BEATLES - Your Mother Should Know

When I'm 64

We could not wait
it was released  today
Gene skipped maths, period two
to go to Boots and  get a copy
a double EP mini album with booklet
It was the most anticipated event ever
he came back we both went to the prefects room

cigarettes were lit, a beer in hand
an excuses for English third period was arranged
we played it on our little Dansette player
goo goo g'joob,goo goo g'joob
you let your knickers down
Edgar Allen Po
your mother should know, your mother should know

roll up roll up for the Magical Mystery tour
it was as good or better than we expected
Gene kept repeating, perfectly loud., perfectly loud
the Beatles were perfectly good
Blue Jay Way
flying, the Beatles were flying
George is coming thru

I remeber pleading with my father to be able to watch it on TV

he relented, it was fabulous, the music was fabulous

Your father should know!

I have just watched it on TV a couple of days ago
it was hideous
I'm deflated, it was just awful
I'm crying, I'm crying
but seeing the Beatles was good
the music still stood up
your mother should know!
your mother should know!

I'm fucking 64!

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Donovan - Turquoise

MIDWEEK CRISIS why is everything so black and white, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we've got Donovan, Dylan, Joan and you will see the world is really coloured Turquoise,
Sunshine Superman

Believe it or not I was aware of Donovan before I heard  of Dylan. I first saw him on a classic music programme called  Ready Steady Go  it was revolutionary at the time and all the early greats appeared there, The Beatles, The Stones etc.  Donovan as I recall had a guest spot for a few weeks singing topical stuff he did especially for the show. It was there I first heard his self penned song Catch the Wind which I thought was really different and innovative...that was until I heard Blowin in the Wind and The Times they are a Changin' by Dylan.

Donovan released Turquoise  in 1965 as a single and it had only moderate success which I could not understand at the time, as it  just blew me away and it still stands up to day as a classic.

Just close your eyes and you are by the sea and at the end you will be in a very good place indeed.

The story goes he wrote the song for none other than Joan Baez whom he claimed he was in love with. Joan later recorded the song.

Donovan has done many many good songs but this just has to be my favourite.

R.I.P. - Davy Jones (1945-2012)

It is with great sadness yesterday that I heard of the passing of Davy Jones.
THE MONKEES - I'm a Believer(1965)

When I first heard that there was going to be a manufactured band for a TV programme, even as a teenager, I was cynical at that prospect. I thought I should however give it a watch. The Beatles and the Beach Boys were at the height of their glorious powers. It was obvious that this was a ploy to copy the Beatles. Four guys , the goofy one, the serious one, the rebel and of course the cute one. Davy Jones fitted the bill to perfection as the cute one that all the young girls loved and adored. Even the format of the stories were very much like the Beatles film Help..

Saying all that, I loved the Monkees and continued to watch them every Saturday night. The main reason was the quality of the songs. It was top notch pop, as good as it gets. I bet you all know some of the Monkees' songs : ‘I'm A Believer’, ‘(I'm Not Your) Steppin’ Stone’ and ‘Daydream Believer’, their albums and singles have sold over 65 million copies worldwide.

Davy Jones was the face and the voice of the Monkees.

All I can say as a last few words is  'hey, hey, I am a believer'   R.I.P.  Davy Jones.

GUEST SPOT # 4 - The Beatles - 'Here Comes the Sun'

The Beatles: Here Comes the Sun

This weeks guest spot is the from Squirrel

I was watching the film "Bees" with my boy and heard this classic track which instantly took me back to when I first heard it - In the summer in early 90s, I was in a tent, in a field at 4 o'clock in the morning and a DJ puts this track on, mixed with a bassline from some other track I don't remember. You guessed it, the sun was just coming up. That moment has never left me and everytime I here it now, I am back in that field smiling contently, at how, at that moment there is a soundtrack to my very life. This urged me to check out the Beatles a little more closely! Mr Harrison RIP!
