TRACKS OF THE WEEK 01/06/2014 - Eels, Tom Vek, The Horrors, Fang Island

You'll find nothing Cheesy here - 4 tracks to chase!

SFW:-
Eels - A Swallow in the Sun (2014)
I have religiously bought Mark E.Everett (EELS) albums ever since Beautiful Freak in 1996.  He's an artist that I've stuck with, despite his material often leaving me disappointed.  I've admired him/them best when the songs have bared all and this doesn't disappoint.  Intelligent with dark humour, this delivers yet more unhappy endings. A Swallow in the Sun features on his most recent album, The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett. The sadness triumphs again. Phew!

Old Pa's Corner :-
Tom Vek - Broke (2014)

I just had to feature this one, not only because I like it, but this lad was born in Hounslow in Middlesex and I spent a lot of my life in that part of the woods. Another reason is, that as the whole Tune Doctor Team are all going to Latitude in July, we are trying, if possible to feature artist who are in the line up.  T.V. is in the line up and after hearing this I will certainly be checking him out.

I wonder if he ever drank in the Rifleman in Hounslow?, Shellhunter's favourite underage drinking Pub. Hey! Tom, lets us know if you have downed in the Rifleman!

The track is from his new album Luck (2014).

Shell Hunter:-
The Horrors - 'So Now You Know' (2014)
Love this new song by The Horrors from their latest album Luminus, real eases last month. It's got a great 80s vibe and I can't stop singing it. I remember a few years back when I met the arrival of a KLM flight and saw a group of guys walk off with skinny jeans, beanies and plimsoles on and thought, they must be a band. I checked the passenger list and saw there were 4 passengers with excess baggage comments and that gave it away, bands have band equipment. I googled their names and came up with The Horrors, so since then I've always been interested in them.   Their sound can be described as shoegaze, goth-rock, dream pop or post punk which doesn't really mean much to me, I just like the fact the whispy vocals and synths remind me of 80s film soundtracks. There has to be a few 'horrific' gems on this album if this is anything to go by!

London Scouser:-
Fang Island - 'Sisterly'
I'll be honest and say I can't remember how I came across this Brooklyn based band. I added their 2012 album 'Major' to my 'One's to listen to' folder on Spotify and this week that's what I've done. I'm pretty happy with the results too. Great indie anthems with my favourite being 'Sisterly'. The video is pretty good too, its your basic studio video but with gratuitous cuddly toy throwing... Maybe the director used to work on 'The Generation Game'... #shutthatdoor

FLYCASUAL'S Best of 2011

It's always an unenviable task, trying to streamline your favourite songs into a playlist, but 5, outrageous! Oh the sleepless nights, who gets left behind?? I felt like I was the chopper pilot in the scene in Platoon where Willem Defoe's, Elias gets left behind.
Oh well, there goes Ghostpoet
Yeah, OK anyway, 2011 has been a great year for music but more so since the creation of this blog. One of the points of this blog was to find out what my friends/family were listening to and if they had any anecdotes about the songs as to why they liked them. I don't get to see them as often as I'd like to and like SFW said in his intro, "recreate the listening sessions of the past". So what better way than to conceive a blog where you can do just that!! As a result of the Guest Spots and my fellow contributors, who in turn have different tastes to mine, it has been a bumper crop! So a huge thanks to all of you!

Little Dragon - 'Ritual Union'
My favourite song, album and band/artist of the year for me, their Lo-Fi Electronica ticking all the right boxes, prompting me to get hold of their back catalogue. Ritual Union's a fabulous track (featured here), it's flavour encapsulated the summer for me, great voice and complete with synth sax break (there's not enough sax at the moment). Little Dragon's collaborations this year were exceptional too, including 'Wildfire' with SBTRKT (featured here too) and this beautiful piece, 'Scale it Back' with DJ Shadow.

Beastie Boys - 'Make Some Noise'
"oh my god just look at me grandpa been rapping' since 83". Great back to form old skool flashback from the Beasties with their silly witty rhymes and fresh beats. Trademark outstanding video too, with Hollywood cameos aplenty and if you have a spare 29:55 minutes, check the full video here....

Wild Beasts - 'Reach A Bit Further'
Fabulous vocals and melody, with happy memories of a perfect day spent on the beach with my wife and my little boy.

The Horrors - 'Still Life'
Epic retro 80's stomp fest, I can just picture a Miami Vice cut scene with a jilted Don Johnson tearing shit up around Miami. Would definitely feature on the soundtrack to the remake of The Breakfast Club.

Tinarwiren - 'Tenere Taqqim Tossam'
Unfortunately they didn't take up my offer of a cup of tea at my house (what??) when they were touring last month so I went to see them instead and I was not disappointed. Top, top tune from the desert rebel rockers, The Clash, Santana and Hendrix rolled into one (erm, if they were all Bedouins).

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 03/07/11

These are our tracks of the week. Do you have any? Let us know!

Flycasual
The Horrors - 'Still Life' (2011)

I imagine this from a cut scene in an 80's film where a lovelorn protagonist, white jacket (sleeves rolled up) and Wayfarers on, is driving dazed through the city. Hmmm anyway that was probably me fantasing on the way back from Camberley with the weekly shopping . There's an abundance of bands recreating 80's style Synth-Pop but I took an instant liking to this track, perhaps it has that right mix of all those 80's bands at the darker end of the spectrum. A slow stomping beat culminating to an anthemic ending..huge!

Definately in the mix in this song:-
Jesus and Mary Chain, Gary Numan, Joy Division

SFW
Lana Del Rey - 'VideoGames' (2011)

My wife put me onto this (she heard it on Fearne Cottons show) and although the song as nice as a chilled glass of Chardonnay it needs a few listens - fortunately the video is worth a watch and it could easily be targeted at the male audience - it features pouting, video games & skateboarding. Which are 3 things that I enjoy.....enough said!

Old Pa
Bon Iver - 'Calgary' (2011)
This is taken from the new self titled Album 'Bon Iver'. Two eagerly anticipated albums this year was this one and the new one by the Fleet Foxes. Both were hard acts to follow. There does not apear to be the standout Tracks that were prominent in their last outings. Saying that, I have heard enough from both, that, with a little bit of 'work' (I mean work with pleasure) the rewards will be forth coming. The Calgary track hit me right away  and gets better with each hearing.
