DYLAN COVERS #80 Counting Crows/Bruce Hornsby - Girl from the North Country

Its a Hard Candy

COUNTING CROWS - Girl from the North Country(2012)

Here are a couple of very very good covers of the classic Girl from the North Country there are many great covers of this song but both these version stand up against the very best. First up is the 'sometimes brilliant' Counting Crows, this is taken from their album Underwater Sunshine(2012) and comes as a bonus song. There is another Dylan Cover I shall be released also on that album.

Next is by Bruce Hornsby and if taken from a concert on the 31 October 1998. It can be found on The Best of Mountain stage live vol 6.  I really liked his song The Way It Is when it first came out but kind of lost track of him. Welcome back Bruce.

TUESDAY BLUES!! Counting Crows - Blues Run The Game

Counting Crows - Blues Run The Game

This Jackson C Frank song has been covered by many artists that I could spend a few weeks writing about the different versions. Notable covers have been recorded by Bert Jansch, Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake.  However, for me, I'll always think of the Counting Crows version.

In 2002, I took a few friends to see Counting Crows live at the Bristol Academy.  It was one of the most mesmerising gigs I've been to. However, it was this song that we all kept talking about on our journey home to Wales.  So when, a few weeks later, it appeared on the single American Girls it became a must have and has been a favourite of mine ever since.

TUESDAY BLUES! Counting Crows - Mrs Potters Lullaby

Counting Crows - Mrs Potters Lullaby (1999)

Some songs have the uncanny knack of putting a smile on my grumpy chops, this is one of them. It features on This Desert Life and is supposedly written about the actress Monica Potter, of whom singer Adam Duritz became "inspired" when seeing in a Movie - probably means fancied.

I'll always have a soft spot for Counting Crows in my life, from my early 20's where I'd have drunken sing-a-longs to August and Everything After, to Rock Star stories of friends who met Adam, and seeing them live a number of times in the last decade - The best of which was seeing them in Bristol Academy, a fairly small venue, which allowed the audience to witness a flawless performance that brought a tear to the eye....

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Counting Crows - Hard Candy

Counting Crows - 'Hard Candy'

The Counting Crows Have come up with some real classics Mrs Potters Lulaby for example. I just love Hard Candy and was heavily into them in 2001. I was raving to anybody who would lisen to me. My daughter and now husband were going to the V festival, over a weekend and asked me to come along. Camper van and own portable loo, then maybe, tent and wellies, then no. The phone rung and on the other end it was the Crows singing Hard Candy...they were within touching distance of them, they were there, I was on the couch. What a looser!.  I always think of my Wife for some reason when I hear the line 'When you sleep, You find your mother in the night, But she stays just out of sight.

More Wednesday Club...oh yeah!
