CALEXICO - Love will Tear us Apart x 2

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

CONGRATS SHELLHUNTER AND LONDON SCOUSER, ITS A GIRL : RIPLEY, BORN 15/03/2015

CALEXICO - Love Will Tear Us Apart (2010)

Two much going on for my normal Posts. I was watching a Joy Division programme that Old Ma taped for me, She must love me 'cause she hates Joy Division. In the programme they mentioned Love Will Tear Us Apart covers and mentioned Calexico and I just had to Pause and well what you get now is the result.

How did I miss that ??

The Calexico studio track is from  Sweetheart: Our Favourite Artists Sing Their Favourite Love Songs (2010).

The live version is taken from a live show on 10/05/2013 @ Santa Monica Pier. It is a shame the quality is not great as it is utterly fabulous.

New Order/Joy Division - In A Lonely place

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

TONE DEATH (an old punk never dies)
A Jeddah Boy!

NEW ORDER - In a Lonely Place

This is a bit of a strange one. A School friend of Flycasual is now part of a band  Mustang.  Check out our Tracks of the Week. They are a Heavy Metal band.  I have know Chris as a kid and he does look the part, even when he was 2 (so did his dad by the way, the late great Clem).  After a few San Miguel's I decides to write a song for them without really knowing their Psych. Which is a bit unfair to them and to me, I suppose. But I was excited about my little challenge.

The idea came very quickly and I was trying to think heavy metal but as Flycasual said to me when I showed him, it leaned towards Punk. Yeah!I suppose it does. But what the hell, I enjoyed it. In fact the next day when walking the dogs I thought of 2 more verses. In my opinion the idea is pretty good, but it needs a good bit of work. A good bit.

Hey! lads if you want some more I am here!

Now I am on a roll, I have been trying for the past few months to think of a theme for a Christmas song and I have just come up with exactly what I want, it was not that easy.  Well there is money to be made there and it would be great to leave some legacy for the kids. I am serious about this, I will let you know how I progress. I only have the idea now to do it!! But it is a good idea!!

Hey! SFW, I may call on you for this one.

Why In a Lonely Place?, well I sneaked.in  for a sneaky pint today and I heard it on the pub radio. I was in shock, but I was flooded with memories. ! It was good enough for me!

Here it is Tone Death  in all its bollocks!
 TONE DEATH

Maggie Thatcher
what was her crime?
she was sacking all Our Bonnie Lads
closing all the coal mines
stealing all their jobs

she was caught giving head to Hesleltine
the dirty tory Slut

she was Tone Death
Tone Death

Adolf Hitler
what was his crime?
he was killing all our Bonnie Lads
frying all the children
destroying all we got

he was caught making out with Goebbels
the dirty little cunt (hun)

he was Tone Death
Tone Death

King Edward
what was his crime?
he was massacring all our Bonnie Lads
burning all our crofts
starving our little bairns

he was caught giving himself a hand job
the slimy dirty sasss

he was Tone Death
Tone Death

Joseph Stalin
what was his crime
he murdered 30 million Bonnie lads
sent them to the gulags
cause they knew the truth

we caught him in bed with Trotsky
the dirty commie fag

he was Tone Death
Tone Death

David Cameron
what is his Crime
starving, squeezing all us Bonnie lads
takes away our hospital beds
with condescending lies

we caught him kissing Osbourne

Daughter - Home (Jon Hopkins remix)

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

A Movie Night

Daughter - Home (Jon Hopkins remix) (2013)

I watched 2 movies back to back last week, both were very watchable, although I would not say they were Oscar material.

The first one was called The Citizen and was about an Arab immigrant who won a green card in a lottery and arrived to start his new life in the United States on the 10th September 2001 (Ouch). It is well worth a watch and the only thing I will tell you is that the Good guy wins.

The second movie is called How I Live Now and starts of as if it is a Walt Disney type kids movie. I very nearly switched it of, just before a nuclear device was detonated in London. The movie is about how the kids in the movie survived. A kind of Love story too. It is just about worth a watch.

What made it stand out for me and the purpose of this post was the Soundtrack. I kept saying to Old Ma throughout the movie that I liked this Soundtrack and I must find out after who it is by. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was by none other than Jon Hopkins and there is a soundtrack album available. This would be his second album this year. His other one is called Immunity and is rather good. A track featured on our Tracks of the Week earlier this year.

Although most of the tracks on the How I Live Now are instrumental, I had to chose the track 'Home' which is a remix of the song originally on Daughter's EP The Wild Youth (2011) as it hit me right away while watching the movie with its sort of early Joy Division base.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 13/10/13 - Porcelain Raft, Arcade Fire, Cass McCombs, Tindersticks

Four tracks that warmed our cockles.....

Old Pa's Corner:-
Tindersticks - Goodbye to the City (2013)

I always get excited when I hear of a new Tindersticks album, even if this one contain only songs from their past, but redone. Not usually keen on this sort of thing. Jeff Lynn did it recently and it did not really work. Chris Rea did it also, but in his case it was a great success. The original track came from their Waiting for the Moon album (2003), not one of their best, but this was one of the standout tracks. Oh! I just love the voice of Stuart Staples, it is so distinctive, like Leonard Cohen or Ian Curtis. I am a great fan of doom and gloom, it makes me happy. If doom is your bag, then Staples is your man.

I think Stuart and the boys do the track justice but but I give the original the edge.

Shell Hunter:-
Arcade Fire - 'Reflektor' (2013)

I love, love, love this song! It has seriously grown on me! At first I thought it sounded a bit like Hercules and Love Affair with it's jiggly danciness but Win Butler, the Fire's lead singers vocals gave it away. I love the addition of the whispy french lyrics, they give it a certain...I don't know what. I read that none other than our mate David Bowie popped by the studio whist the band were mixing to have a listen, liked what he heard so much that he was invited to guest on the single! This track is taken from their fourth album (out on 28th October), also called Reflektor, and was produced by another musical mastermind, James Murphy, the former frontman of LCD Soundsystem. It truly shows that he is definitely not losing his edge!

SFW:-

Cass McCombs - 'There Can Be Only One' (2013)

-
Whether or not There Can Be Only One is a reference to Highlander, you'd have to ask Mr McCombs directly. This song features on his latest release, the 2 disc, Big Wheels and Others, which is released tomorrow (October 14th) - a great excuse to visit your local record shop. A relaxed vibe of guitar, bass & bongos. It has the sort of groove that makes you want to bump & grind with the missus. I think he's a genius.

Flycasual:-
Porcelain Raft - 'Lost Connection' (2013)

Oooof, no problem connecting with this beautifully melancholic track that gets under your skin but in a good way. The rolling piano in tandem with the vocal melody makes for a emotional kidney punch of a song which just sounds like it has been written by somebody who's been kicked in the butt by love. It's fo sho the stand out from London based Italian, Mauro Remiddi aka, Porcelain Raft, second album Permanent Signal.

Cheer up by browsing Porcelain Raft's website here...

Beth Orton - Central Reservation

Old Pa's Wednesday Club

...MICHELE FRIENDLY
Here is a pic of  Michele & friend

BETH ORTON - Central Reservation - Spiritual Life Remix

What is Michele Friendly?

Well it started quite a long time a go, probably in the eighties. You see I had a big problem with Old Ma.  If we were having a drink at home, she just did not like my choices of music. If  Dylan, Van or Joy Division came on, the evening would go flat or we would end up having an argument about how lousy Dylan's voice is etc etc.

What was the solution? well I came up with the Michele Friendly cassette. I would hand pick songs I thought she would like, she did lean towards disco and dance. The song would only get on the tape if I liked it as well. Essential.

I even made picture covers and took a lot of care to make them look appealing and attractive. I convinced OM that they were her tapes and that she had actually really good taste. I made one up every few months and made it out to be a great event.

'Lets have a drink and we can listen to one of your fabulous 'Michele Friendly tapes'

Of course I would convince her that she had great taste and I was only putting on tape what she liked.

A typical tape may have Santana, always a few Reggae, as luckily she likes that, maybe some REM or U2. New Order was acceptable so there certainly was room to manoeuvre. I would also have some of the latest dance music which I would of course have to like.

The big thing for me was to slip on something really daring and get off with it. I did manage to slip on a Joy Division track The Eternal. She even ask who that was as she liked it. I even managed to get off with a Dylan track Belle Isle. Oh how I loved that.  If only you could have seen how I glowed.

It's all a case of doing what you have to do, but at the same time making the best of what is available.

I progressed from cassettes to Cd's, always with carefully prepared covers. I still do MP3 play lists which I know will be compatible with OM.

Anything for a quiet life. That's me!

I chose Beth Orton remix of Central Reservation as it was typical of the type of song I would put on. I knew she would like it and I certainly did.

If I ever formed a group (unlikely) Michele Friendly would be high on the list as a potential name.

'You know what Old Ma? you have got really great taste, even if I say so it myself!'

Here is the album version. It is just a bloody good song no matter how you hear it. The Ben Watt re-mix is not to shabby either.

Ali Campbell - Nothing ever Changes

Old Pa's Wednesday Club

...UB40 V DA PINO
Where's my onions?

ALI CAMPBELL - Nothing Ever Changes (2007)

Torrievieja is on the map, UB40 were coming to town, this was a big deal for here, we don't get many live events. It was not the original band but Ali Campbell backed by musicians, but I suppose he was the main man. Hey! it was better than nothing.

I wanted to go, but when I found out it would cost 100 euros for both of us, without drinks, I thought twice. We just had a lot of work done including a large palm tree removed and re-tiling. Money's too tight to mention. (Valentine Brothers)

On the Sunday before the concert we were discussing the event and trying to convince ourselves to go. It was the usual conversation,  'it's only money, you can't take it with you'  'there are no pockets in a shroud'.

S
suddenly the electrics tripped out.  It was my fault of course, its my fault for everything, if there is an earth quake in San Salvador, I get the blame. (water of a platypus's back).

Anything to do with DIY and I am completely hopeless, but I did isolate it to a certain area, but I could not go any further. It was so hot and humid here, it would have been impossible to go through the night without fans or air conditioning. To cut a long story short (Spandau Ballet) I phoned an electrician and he luckily came out on that Sunday night. He detected the fault in 30 secs. I needed a new Boiler (The Boiler). It cost me 70 euros for his visit and the Boiler cost 250 euros.

That decided it, no UB320.

On the day of the Concert we decided to go to a location close to the venue by the sea and sit in a restaurant, have a few beers and maybe a meal, but at least we could get some atmosphere (Joy Division) and hear the music.

That Bar Restaurant we chose unfortunately had their own entertainment, a Shirley Bassey tribute, so we left and got as close as we could to the venue and found another Bar about 100 metres away. We settled there and waited for Ali and the Boys to come on. He was an hour and a half late (I want my money back) and the sound was poor from where we were. I found out later the beer was 8 euros a pint inside the venue, I was paying 2 euros. God knows how much a red red wine (Neil Diamond) would have cost.

That was it!

It was Pino night. If we were quick, we could get back to Da Pino's Restaurant and get his special Thursday 'Menu Del Dai' which was Schnitzel (the best in the World) and you could have any topping you want. For me it was lashings of fried carmalised onions. Bring it on home (Sam Cooke)

Bloody Ali 'bollocks' Campbell . Who needs it when you got Da Pino's Schnitzel.

The track by Ali is actually pretty good.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Joy Division - New Dawn Fades

THE DAY I MARRIED YOUR MUM!

'we'll give you everything and more,'

JOY DIVISION - New Dawn Fades (1979)

THE DAY I MARRIED YOUR MUM

Your mum was back in Nice
the year was 1974
you were just a couple of months old
I came back from the pub
I phoned
during the call I stumbled out
'I will marry you, if you want'
(who says romance is dead)

The phone went silent
my friend later phoned to congratulate your mum
she did say yes?
didn't she?

Everything happened very fast after that
a date was set in July, in Nice
I was broke, nowhere to stay
I would shortly be married with a son
oh! well!
we did not have rings
her mother gave us some old gold
 we got it melted down
enough for 2 chain linked rings
almost romantic

The evening before my friend and a cousin of your mum
took me out for a pub crawl
supposedly a stag night
I lost them
I found them
they were asleep on the beach
I was sober
 they were drunk

There was no one from my side at the wedding
it took place at the Town Hall
we all sat outside a big door
it was like a bus station
we were summoned
we sat in a room
a large guy wearing a chain came in
it was the Le Maire
we all stood up
we all sat down
he mumbled in French
I did not understand
we both stood up
your mum said oui!
I was nudged
I  said oui!
we signed a bit of paper
 were given a medal
the next thing we were outside on the pavement
It took about a minute and a half
now thats what I call a Wedding
'lets go for a drink'
it was a unanimous decision

The reception was back at your grandma's house
two days later I was in the U.K
alone
I had to find somewhere to stay
for my family
fast
on the wings of a falcon

Hope you like the choice of song, I just could not resist it. Oh! you are naughty Old Pa!.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - New Order/Joy Division - Ceremony

MIDWEEK CRISIS there is no Order in your life, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB and join the Ceremony and we will bring you Joy

Watching forever

NEW ORDER - Ceremony

Ian Curtis was taken from us, there was a large void which could never be filled. Rumours were flying around that Joy Division would carry on with the a new name New Order (oh no! not more Nazi references) and a new single was set for release.

Finally the day arrived myself and a friend were at the record shop 9 o'clock sharp to get hold of that single. Two un-released Joy Division songs. We could not contain our excitement and rushed home to play the contents of that beautifull gold package.  It must be a similar feeling to be holding an Olympic Gold Medal. (well almost)
Heaven knows!
Both tracks were utterly fabulous, but it was not Ian, but it was no disappointment either. The B -side was pure Curtis.  'In a Lonely Place'  it seemed to be tailor made for all us mourning fans. The sound of  thunder, the grave yard,  it was just what we needed to let go and embrace 'New Order'.

My friend and I carved in the brickwork on my front wall of my living room B&R JD all a bit pathetic now, but at the time it was important to us. When I sold the house 20 odd years later it was still there and I bet it is still there now.(My wife never noticed as it was discreetly done, if she found it, I would have been in serious!!!)  We were bit like love struck lovers carving their names on the old oak tree.

Later that year New Order re-recorded it with new member Gillian Gilbert and released it in 12 inch format. Of course I bought that also.

When the Mp3 boom arrived we were soon to discover other early versions with Ian himself on vocals.
There is also my favourite version on 'Still' (The release of that double album was another momentous occasion) when you can here Ian's vocals very low in the background then suddenly the full vocals in all their glory come through, it is stunning and always delivers a chicken skin moment.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - The Sound - Silent Air/Silent Air(Live)

MIDWEEK CRISIS the noise is screaming in yours ears, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we've got the Adrian Bordland & The Sound, we've got Silence and we've got a guilt trip...

In Silence
THE SOUND - In Silence (1981)

In 'These days' it was all 'Joy Division' they were the front runners, it was something new, a different take. I, like many others, were caught, mesmerised in their dark majestic web of beautiful haunting genuine heartfelt music.  They had no equals.

However 'The Sound' were in a similar vein and were as I remember in the classification of another poor man's 'Joy Division'. But they were better than that and although JD's influence was always there, they had several albums that if you have not heard them are worth trying to hear.  When Ian Curtis tragically died  'The Sound' included a song on their then latest album 'From The Lions Mouth' called 'Silent Air' an excellent  tribute to Ian,

I lost my original copy of the album and was delighted when 'The Sounds' albums were released in CD format.  I was reading a musical magazine years later about an article on rare CD's and what they were worth. 'From the Lions Mouth' was featured and was valued at around £50.

Last year I saw that it was going to be re-released again so I put my copy on EBay 2 weeks before the release date and got a substantial amount for it. I have had this guilt trip ever since. I feel relieved, now that I have confessed and now I can get on with the rest of my life.

It is a superb album.

Adrian Borland who was the main man behind  'The Sound' was like Ian Curtis a tragic figure who suffered from depression and like his hero he also committed suicide.

GUEST SPOT # 13 - Joy Division - 'She's Lost Control'

This week's Guest Spot is from Grace, writing like this at 16! Could she be the next big music journalist??

Joy Division - 'She's Lost Control' (1979/80)

It's clear that human beings have a fascination and perhaps even a need for fear. Whether it's the original Japanese version of 'The Ring' or 'SAW: The Ride' at Thorpe Park, we all have something that frightens us, but we still love it and return to it repeatedly. I discovered my "horror vice" when I watched 'Control', the biopic about the life and death of Joy Division's tragic front man Ian Curtis. I never understood their popularity until I saw that very film and heard 'She's Lost Control'. The droning bass line, paired with Curtis' signature robotic, mono tonal vocals, creates a beautifully frightening piece of music which has inspired many modern bands - including Editors, Interpol and Franz Ferdinand. However, the lyrics are even creepier than the music: the song tells the story of a woman that Ian Curtis knew who had died during an epileptic seizure (often referred to as "losing control"), a condition that he also had, hence the frightened, somewhat paranoid sound in his voice throughout. Not only was it an audio marvel, it was visually spectacular too - Curtis was famous for his "epilepsy dance" during intense performances, where fans couldn't tell whether he was dancing or having a seizure. Sadly, Ian Curtis committed suicide on 18th May 1980, shortly after a nearly fatal epileptic seizure; this creates an even spookier, ironic meaningfulness to the song.

Joy Division are undoubtedly a depressing band, but they certainly do it well! This song sends shivers running down my spine every time I hear it, but I always want to hear it again after it fades out. 'She's Lost Control' is 3 minutes and 40 seconds of bewitching, yet beautiful, horror and I don't think there is any song that will ever move me to the extent that this does.

CLASSIC MOVIE SCENE # 3 - Control - Joy Division - 'Dead Souls'

Being a great Joy Division Fan, I had reservations when this film came out....but I have to say it was so well done and this scene when they play Dead Souls is absolutely amazing...it still brings shivers every time I see it and is up there with my favourite movie scenes of all time.....The track itself shows how great JD were and why they have influenced so many modern bands.  It was first released as part of a limited edition 'Sordide Sentimental' in France and as I used to go to Nice often, I trawled through all the record shops to get it....but with no success.  Sam Riley who plays Ian Curtis is eerily like the great man.

'Someone take these dreams away'
