Shell Hunter's Best Of 2013

Bye bye 2013, unlucky for some but not me. I've visited new places like New York, Jamaica and Benidorm(!), and experienced a fantastic music festival, Latitude (see you next year!). What made these experiences extra special were the recommendations of songs and bands that made up the many playlists I've created and loved on my travels. Thank you guys for taking the time out to share your favourite tracks and memories and giving me your two pennies worth on mine. Here's to a renewed zest for the same in 2014!

Josephine - 'Portrait'

One that cuts a little too close to the bone about true self reflection that I struggle to listen to without shedding a tear. That coupled with a beautiful nostalgic voice makes for an unforgettable and meaningful song for me.

Junip - 'Line Of Fire'

Brings me back great memories of lounging on the grass on a very sunny Sunday afternoon at Latitude Festival, shades on and cold cider in hand, watching one of the most perfect bands for the mood. Junip fast became a favourite group of mine, thanks to the push from SFW. My track of the year.

Pearl Jam - 'Sirens'

This one came out of nowhere (actually London Scouser's TOTW) and absolutely blew me away. One of the most romantic rock songs I've heard in a very long time, rivalling even my favourite 'All Night Thing' by Temple Of The Dog which was sung by fellow band mate Chris Cornell. Eddie Vedder could melt even the coldest of black hearts with this best example of his fabulous voice. Worth reading the lyrics here.

Robert DeLong - 'Global Concepts'

Brilliant and innovative with drumming that I can't get enough of. I look forward to hearing more of what Robert can do. Some may sneer at the dropping of the 'F' bomb but I think it's essential. I always imagine being in a packed club in LA, that line blaring out with the beat kicking in and me getting swallowed up by the crowd loving it!

Night Engine - 'Seventeen'

These guys were a big part of my music year ever since I found out a friend from college was in the band. Full of guitar funk with excellent synths, their energy is infectious and if ever a band was worthy of being signed it's them. Keep you're eyes on them, I know I will.

Have a listen to the rest of my Top 20 below!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 27/10/13 - The Band with Bob Dylan, Bahama Soul Club, Seryn, Solomon Grey, Pearl Jam

Five tracks that blew us away

Flycasual:-
Bahama Soul Club - 'Malago' feat Danay Suarez (2013)

She's sexy, she's sultry, she can rap and I would still let her buy me a Mojito, needless to say I'm a big fan. I'm also quite partial to Cuban music and found this track on the new release from Bahama Soul Club, the Soul/Funk outfit's second album, The Cuban Tapes.

Bahama Soul Club on Buyu records

London Scouser:-
Pearl Jam - 'Sirens' (2013)

This week I don't have a specific favourite track, more of an album that I can't stop listening to. To choose a preferred track I would liken to a parent choosing a favourite child. Whilst each child has their good bits and some not so good, you tend to love them equally. And I can speak from experience as a father of zero kids !!!
The album in question is Pearl Jam's 10th studio album 'Lightning Bolt' and first since 2009. I've been there for every one, keenly awaiting and seldom disappointed. It's like a greatest hits of all new tracks, what I mean is that every track seems to be similar in style to many of their best tracks. In a previous post I said that 'Mind Your Manners' reminded me of 'Spin The Black Circle' and the titular (I learned that word yesterday !!) track seems so familiar after a couple of plays I could swear that its an oldie. The track I have chosen is the second single released from the album and again it reminds me of one of their slower numbers 'Nothingman'
All I can say is that when it comes to my Top 20 of the year, I'm either going to have to disown some of my (nonexistent) children or choose all 12 tracks from the album.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Ths Band with Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone (2013)

This is taken from the Band's new album  Live at the Academy of Music 1971, It contains a set they did with Bob Dylan and this take of Like a Rolling Stone is as good as I have heard for some time. If only Bob's voice was as good as this today. But saying that I wish I had a ticket for his upcoming concerts in the UK. All you lucky beggers.

Shell Hunter:-
Solomon Grey - 'Firechild' (2013)

This is a tuuuunnnneeee! I love the ability songs have to transport you back in time and this one captures the spirit of the 80s very nicely! I hope they aren't offended when I say that the vocals remind me a little of Sydney Youngblood. In my world that's a good thing! This British duo spent 3 years working on their self titled debut album split between a remote lighthouse in Ireland and a family farm in Australia. With those unusual environments as inspiration, I look forward to hearing more unique electro landscapes. All we have to do is Sit And Wait for it's release on Black Butter Records, but for now, Firechild is released on 18th November!

Sfw:-
Seryn - Ivory Black (2013)

As the nights are getting darker this track by Seryn certainly matches my mood.  They are a 6 piece from Texas, whose track Ivory Black is my current muse.  I've been giving it a lot of listens and I really like the harmonies and how their dynamics rise and gently fall.  One word, delightful. However, I do wonder if they know that Seren is Welsh for Star?

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 25/08/2013 - White Lies, Pond, Night Beds, Tired Pony, Pearl Jam

Five tracks that were as good as a £1500 feast at Nando's....

Shell Hunter:-
White Lies - 'There Goes Our Love Again (Night Engine Remix)' (2013)

I know I've been flying the neon flag of Night Engine recently but I don't put my seal of approval on just anyone. I was passed this remix of White Lies' recent single There Goes Our Love Again and I love its more somber, slowed down take of the original. It really is a plethora of my favourite 80s synth snippets, from the Ultravox 'Vienna' intro beat through to the Depeche Mode echoey vocals. If you listen hard enough once the beat kicks in, there's a bit of Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall' guitar riff in there and (am I mad?!) a bit of MJ's Thriller too! Throw in a some hand claps for good measure and I'm sold! The MP3 is available to buy on iTunes or Amazon now and is featured on White Lies' There Goes Our Love Again Remixes album released on 23rd August.

Flycasual:-
Pond - 'O Dharma' (2013)

You can't beat a bit of psychadelica. It makes me feel care free, like I'm prancing around in a field of barley, in my underpants, with only the blue flashing lights of the 'feds' in the distance killing my buzz, man. This is one such song, a stunning track by the Aussie five piece (including two members of Tame Impala) which is taken from their fifth album, Hobo Rocket. I love how it feels like it's in two parts, starting off at a slow dreamy pace before the drums kick in, igniting it off somewhere up into the stratosphere. It'll have you getting undressed in no time.

Check out Pond's bits on the Modular Recordings website here...

SFW:-
Night Beds - Ramona (2013)

Night Beds is Winston Yellen, a 24 year-old from Colorado Springs and have unveiled a new video for "Ramona" which features on his 2013 debut release, Country Sleep. The song was written in a colonial style home on the outskirts of Nashville that was once owned by Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. The tune’s tale of unrequited love and courtship suggests those walls recall the
moment Johnny brazenly told June upon first meeting, “You and I are going to get married someday.”

The album was released by the label Dead Oceans Records, which is the home to Bill Fay, Phosphorescent and Tallest Man on Earth, which might just get your attention!

Old Pa's Corner :-
Tired Pony - All Things All at Once (2013)

I was a big fan of  Tired Pony's  first album  The Place We Ran From (2010). This is track from their second album  The Ghost of the Mountain (2013)  and seems to have a much bigger production, but who's complaining. This track is an instantly accessible song and the lead singer's voice sounds spot on.
It is apparently liked by none other than  Harry  himself and there is talk, he and the Boys may record it. So enjoy it while you can, before it becomes a 1D tune and is instantly number one in the charts. (do they still have charts?).

London Scouser:-
Pearl Jam - 'Mind Your Manners' (2013)

Finally, a new track from one of my favourite bands. Eddie and the guys are back with a great song that reminds me of 'Spin The Black Circle' and could quite easily have come from 'Vitalogy' their 3rd and possibly one of their best albums IMO. This is from their upcoming album 'Lightning Bolt' which is released in October....... I can't blinking wait !!!

DYLAN COVERS #100 ***SPECIAL*** The Freewheelin' Covered, Side 1

NUMBER 100 DYLAN COVERS, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!

I only started it as a bit of fun, but it soon became an obession, very like collecting Dylan Bootlegs. If you are reading this, then you have probably been there.

I now have thousands of Dylan covers. Everything on MP3 and backed up twice...if I lost them. Well I don't know what?

Family photos or my Dylan Covers. ....sorry!!!.........

I started collecting Dylan Covers CDs, but it got silly, so I just now copy them and sell the CD. As I always say. 'All I need as a possesion is my Hard Drive' and my loin cloth!

Anyway, I am rambling and to celebrate the #100,  I have decided to cover Dylan's iconic second album The Freewheelin' (#50, I covered 'Blonde on Blonde')

I can't wait for #1000, maybe I will cover  'Tempest ' now that would be a Titanic project.!.

I hope you have enjoyed some of the covers I have found, as much as I have had the pleasue of finding them.

Old Ma thinks I am sad! and can not stand Mr D.

Apart from that and the fact she is French!!!................'talking to some French Girls'

I'm bleeding freezing!

PETER PAUL and MARY - Blowin' in the Wind

I just had to start with Peter, Paul and Mary, this is where it all started for Bob way back in 1963. They had a number two hit with the song and this provided fame and exposure for a Young Bob Dylan and of course shed loads of dollars. This is a live version of probably Dylan's most famous song

ROD STEWART - Girl from the North Country (alt Take)

There are many many fabulous covers of this brilliant love song, too many to even mention, but I am going for Rod Stewart and his alternative take from the one released on his 1974 album Smiler. This one is lot sparser and much superior in my opinion. You can find it on 'The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998 (Rarities/Sessions Box).' You will find some great stuff there, including some good Bob Covers.

I think Rod deserves to be included, he has done many Dylan Covers and has enough to make up a complete Dylan Covers album. Come on Rod why don't you release such an album. You may even get back your street cred.   His latest album contains a take of Corina Corina.

EDDIE VEDDER - Masters of War

There are many great versions of this brilliant anti-war song. I have featured some excellent versions in previous posts. Notably Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder, The Roots and The Staple Singers.

I just had to feature another version by Eddie Vedder who has practically made the song his own. This can be found on the DVD  'The People Speak.' . For other Eddie versions.

WHILE and MATTHEWS - Down the Highway

'Down the Highway' and 'Bob Dylan's Blues' are to be quite honest fillers and are nowhere near the high standard of the other tracks on side 1. This is probably why I cannot find too many covers to chose from. Both these tracks are from  'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - A Folk Tribute,'  which was on an BBC Radio 2 FM  Broadcast: May 18th 2011. They are actually pretty good and the concert is a must hear.

EWEN MCLENNAN - Bob Dylan's Blues

JOAN BAEZ - A Hard Rains a Gonna Fall

It just had to be Joan's version taken from her 1965 album 'Farewell Angelina' still one of my favourite albums of all time, It has several other Dylan covers and I just love the stripped down versions, compared with the band sound of her double album of Dylan Covers 'Any Day Now' (1968).

I'm the Madonna?

COVER NERD! - Pearl Jam - 'Last Kiss'

We welcome back Neal (AKA London Scouser or Neo), our very own Covers Nerd! Keep an eye out for his posts which will feature his favourite covers old and new! Are there any we should know about??

I was nervous, I wanted to impress but I also wanted to show off a little. I was going on holiday with my girlfriend (now wife) and her parents for the first time. We made a now customary holiday CD and had to choose 4 songs each.

My choices were Del Amitri - Just Before You Leave, Alice In Chains - No Excuses. Both of which have been previously featured on Tune Doctor. My third was David DeVant & His Spirit Child - Ginger (not my finest moment) and this song by (nearly) everyone's favourite Seattle band.
On the first couple of plays of the CD, I hadn't got the reception I'd hoped for especially from Shell Hunter. I guess it wasn't what you'd expect from Pearl Jam. But now I'm pleased to say that the song is very well received by all parties. I later discovered it was originally by Wayne Cochran in the early 60's.

I'd bought the song on a CD single which had a double A side with the song Soldier Of Love. It was a Fan Club single release and both tracks featured on a charity album called No Boundaries: A Benefit For The Kosovar Refugees.

Oh where oh where can PJ be?

The holiday had many great memories from the Chav's on board the aircraft who thought they could freestyle rap (they so couldn't) to the Pub Quiz at a bar (which will remain nameless) that ended with Old Pa saying the line "by the way, love the hair" (which I'm sure he paraphrased from Hannibal) to the bar owner as we left. Oh and not to forget the breaking of the white plastic chair. Old Pa again !!!

NERD ALERT! - In the film Singles, the members of Citizen Dick (Matt Dillon's band) were played by the guys in Pearl Jam!

GUEST SPOT #27 - Mother Love Bone - 'Crown of Thorns'

Saturday, it's a Saturday ee-yay....anyway it's our Guest Spot day, friends, mums, uncles, vicars...anyone can do one just email us and we'll tell you wa gwan!

Mother Love Bone - 'Crown of Thorns' (1991)

Music brings people together....Cheesy I know but thanks to the onset of this blog and it's guest spots, I've set out what I wanted to achieve, in a sense staying in touch with people through music. Basically doing what we used to do, having a few beers listening to tunes, finding out what we all like and generally hanging out but now doing it all virtually. This weeks guest spot is no different. His name is Stuart, I used to work with him years ago, he's a stand up guy, funny, witty, with a love of music and he's picked an absolute corker!!

Given the nature and accessibility of music these days I'm harking back to a time when, for me at least, my experience of music was as much a physical as well as a mental one. Nowadays most of my music exists somewhere on my hard drive and the physical experience of holding and reading and caressing (yes!) a highly awaited fragment of sound has gone. My choice of course. I still feel the need to seek out vinyl and CDs in various 2nd hand record shops but, like any music junkie, the Internet offers a far quicker, if less satisfying, fix.

Mother Love Bone, excellent babysitting rates dude!

Therefore, my tune of choice is from an album that I still remember reading about, waiting for and buying.  Even 20 years on the sensation of excitement remains. I know the exact shop where it was purchased - an Our Price shop that no longer exists. I remember handing over the cash and diligently reading the sleeve notes before listening to it for the first time in my bedroom - 2 hours after it first appeared in my hands. That album was Apple by the Seattle based band Mother Love Bone. My chosen song is Crown of Thorns. Great album, great song, tragic ending. Lead singer Andy Wood died from a heroin overdose before the release, lending an even more poignant, tragic air to the album and to this song in particular. However, from the ashes was born the phenomenon that is Pearl Jam. But that's another story...

Anyway, enough of my yakking - give it a listen...

Throw me a frickin' bone....check out more of our guest spots, there's all sorts!

check our Temple of the Dog post here....

DYLAN COVERS # 22 - Pearl Jam/Eddie Vedder - Masters of War

PEARL JAM - 'Masters of War' (Letterman show)

EDDIE VEDDER - 'Masters of War' (Bridge School 2004)

'Masters of War' from 'Freewheelin' in 1963 is as relevant today as it was then. All these big corporations need their 'war' so they can mass produce weapons (YOU that build the big guns) that kill millions of innocent people, including their own countrymen. Why? So they can earn billions of dollars for their own greed. They have blood on their hands, but do they care? I don't think so  (even Jesus would never forgive what you do).

This is Dylan at his most vicious and bitter. He tells it how it is and what should happen to these heartless people. But with all the money they have, will it allow them to have any peace of mind? (All the money you made will never buy back your soul.)

These are two great versions (there are several others around). The song suits Vedder's magnificent voice as he spits out the words with venom. I have included both for download and edited out the the beginning of the Letterman intro.

TUESDAY BLUES! Pearl Jam - Around the bend

Pearl Jam - Around The Bend (1996)

Pearl Jam seem to be having a bit of a renaisance at the mo., with their recently released Cameron Crowe directed movie (PJ20), they just seem to be everywhere and for this I am glad! For far too long it seemed that to say you were a PJ fan was like admitting you had a boil on your backside, or a hairy back - some things are best not said in public (I have neither, as the cream works fine thank you).

For many people, Pearl Jam will always be remembered when the Seattle Grunge scene broke and their anthemic sing-a-long songs like 'Alive' & 'Jeremy' - but for me their tenderer material hits me more.  'Around the bend' from 'No Code' album will always be my favourite. It was written by Eddie Vedder for Jack Irons (drummer) baby - and is about watching/holding his baby as it goes to sleep, and also how he's sorry that he can't do it everyday.
"...their synchronised jumping always needed more practice..."

Will Pearl Jam ever get back in the mainstream? Probably not, as they've spent the last decade trying NOT to be successful....just writing, recording and touring and making a few of us very happy in between!

Like more Tuesday Blues? Get some here!

....I've got the Tuesday Blues because Saturday is so far away!

GIVE ME A GUITAR!! - Temple Of The Dog - 'Hunger Strike'

Temple Of The Dog - 'Hunger Strike' (1991)

I first heard of Temple Of The Dog long after I was a fan of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and was already in love with Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder's unique rock voices. My now husband(his romancing tactics cleary worked) brought over the album in a obvious bid to woo me with his music expertise and it really knocked me for six! Take heed you ladies out there, it will make you go weak at the knees in parts! Chris Cornell wrote the album as a tribute to the late Andrew Wood, the former lead singer of band Mother Love Bone. Its hard to believe that this album was released before Pearl Jam's 'Ten'!

Nobody puts Temple Of The Dog in the corner

What I loved about the album and especially the song Hunger Strike, was that it had a rock sound but was slower and less angry. Vedder and Cornell's voices compliment each other well with Vedder having the smooth low warble and Cornell's perfectly placed high pitched rock scream! There is no other man that can make Musketeer chic look sexy! As my own tribute, I have included a Mother Love Bone track straight from the well loved "Singles" sound track. Chloe Dancer/ Crown of Thorns is a splice of two songs but to me, can only ever be heard as one. Prepare for goosebumps!

It's all for one

And one for rock!
