PEARL JAM - 'Masters of War' (Letterman show)
EDDIE VEDDER - 'Masters of War' (Bridge School 2004)
'Masters of War' from 'Freewheelin' in 1963 is as relevant today as it was then. All these big corporations need their 'war' so they can mass produce weapons (YOU that build the big guns) that kill millions of innocent people, including their own countrymen. Why? So they can earn billions of dollars for their own greed. They have blood on their hands, but do they care? I don't think so (even Jesus would never forgive what you do).
This is Dylan at his most vicious and bitter. He tells it how it is and what should happen to these heartless people. But with all the money they have, will it allow them to have any peace of mind? (All the money you made will never buy back your soul.)
These are two great versions (there are several others around). The song suits Vedder's magnificent voice as he spits out the words with venom. I have included both for download and edited out the the beginning of the Letterman intro.

Tulis commentsVedder has just the right voice for this. Great versions. Note how Dylan no longer sings 'Jesus would never forgive what you do'.
ReplyGreat versions by Eddie, I've heard a few of his Dylan Covers, but this one stands out because you know he means it.
ReplyI'm ashamed to admit I'd never heard the song before but would happily listen to Eddie Vedder singing a shopping list so gave it a go. Wonderful, and so appropriate for today.
ReplySB will look out for that, its an interesting one
ReplyHe'd make the dullest of shopping lists exciting. I wish it was more Rock n' Roll with 1 bottle of Jack Daniels and 1 tub of houmous but instead it's more 1 pack of Tesco value baby wipes and a 6 pack of Petit Filou.
ReplyVedder can do no wrong in my eyes, even making Dylan his own. I didn't know this song either but I really like it.
