DYLAN COVERS # 53 ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL - Blonde on Blonde Covered 2 of 3

Stuck inside a Mobile with Cat Power

CAT POWER - Stuck inside a Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again

I went with Cat Power's version from the 'I'm Not There' Soundtrack. Excellent Soundtrack, but if the truth be know the film was disappointing. It had its moments but they were few and far between. Other contenders were again the Grateful Dead and Steve Gibbons.
BECK - Leopard-Skin-Pill-Box Hat

I like Beck's version from the Album  'War Child - Heroes vol. 1' it does stray away a bit from the original but never the less, I like it and it's my choice, so there. Other ones I considered were versions by Raphael Saddiq and Jimmy Lafave.

RICHIE HAVENS - Just Like a Woman

This was a difficult one as there are so many fantastic covers of this brilliant Dylan song. This version is  Live from 1974 but his studio version taken from the album 'Mixed Bag' (1967) is probably better . There were so many contenders here, Van Morrison, Jo Cocker and Jeff Buckley to name but a few.

EARL SCRUGGS - Most likely You go Your Way

I love this version taken from the album 'Live at Kansas Stat'(1973) great backing and I just love his voice. Other possibilities were the Nighthawks or the Yardbirds.

DEBORAH COLEMAN - Temporary Like Achilles

This cover is taken from the excellent 'Blues on Blonde on Blonde' it is one of these songs which has not been covered too often. My other choice that I had available was by the Don Olsen Gang, which is more than acceptable too.

DYLAN COVERS #33 Jeff Buckley - Mama You been on my mind/Just Like a Woman x 2

JEFF BUCKLEY - Mama You been on my mind

Grace is one of my favourite albums and to have JB sing Dylan is an absolute joy.  I recently got hold of the album  'Born again from the Rhythm - The Grace Outtakes' and it includes 3 Dylan covers, 'If you see her say Hello', 'Just like a Woman' x2 and 'Mama you been on my mind' x3.  Along with 'Mama' above I have included the 2 'Just like a Woman' takes which are of course different from his live take of JLAW on 'Live at  Sin-E'. which contains 2 other Dylan covers in addition to JLAW. ( did you get that?)

What a tragedy JB was taken from us so early in his career. But we should be thankful for the legacy he left behind  and these tracks just add to the myth. What could have been? - but Jeff you been on my mind!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 30/10/2011

Here's four pumpkins to light up your Halloween weekend. Have you got any treats for us?

Flycasual:-
Mazzy Star - 'Common Burn' (2011)

Oh Hope, how happy I am just to know that you'll be around this winter to swoon me with your sultry tones. She has the ability to warm places I never knew existed, which is why I'm especially excited at the prospect of an impending Mazzy Star release, the first since 1996's 'Among My Swan'. It's everything you'd come to expect from Mazzy Star, low key, dreamy Country-fide melancholia. Perfect for those drives into work at 4am or cozying up to a semi clad reveller after a mad party, unfortunately I tend to find myself experiencing the former.

Shell Hunter:-
Clock Opera - 'Lesson No.7' (2011)

I've had a glimpse of the criminal underworld this week. After trying to collect a ticket for a concert from the Box Office and go across to the pub over the road from the venue, I was practically rugby tackled by the bouncer and accused of being a tout! I wish I could show him the video to this song(if you are a bit squeamish look away now), then he'd know what he should really be worried about, not little old me! I heard 'Lesson No.7' on X-Posure on Xfm and liked it straight away, finding it so full of emotion. I can hear so many influences in there but I can't quite put my finger on them, perhaps it's just front man Guy Connelly's style of splicing in samples with noises from random objects! I keep hearing that Clock Opera are the ones to watch and this song definitely confirms it to me.

SFW:-
Jeff Buckley - 'Dream Brother' (Azedia Remix)

Last week I was laying beach in the Maldives, with no cares in the world apart from listening to a holiday playlist, when this quite literally woke me from my afternoon slumber....

It was like being struck by lightning or "By the Power of Zeus!" because it made me do a double take....because 1. I hadn't a clue who it was by & 2. It got me excited that a great remix had been made of one of my favourite artists songs. Since being back in blighty, I haven't found out much about the chap but I've found his soundcloud page and have sent him a gushy email telling him of his great remix....sad I know! So when I find out more, you'll be the first to know!

Old Pa's Corner:-
Tom Russell - 'Mesabi' (2011)

This is taken from Tom's new album 'Mesabi'. It is ground that has been covered many times before ie. American Pie, but I feel I have a responsibility to us 'old farts brigade'(that includes me of course). This type of stuff may not be too popular with some of our younger 'guests'. But spare a moment, for your poor old dad, he might like this type of thing, go on, ask him, lets us know what he thinks! If he likes this, tell him about  'Wednesday Club'  he will be well received .

'Mesabi Iron Range' is 'The Troubadour Kid's' (Dylan) home Country and when you listen to the song you will hear lots of little references to him and some of his popular songs. So it can't be all bad!

Tom's previous Album was the acclaimed 'Blood and Candle Smoke' a collection with none other than Calexico.

TUESDAY BLUES! Jeff Buckley - 'Grace'

I recently read that the long awaited biopic about Jeff will be made and it will not star R-Pats, James Franco or James Marsden but Gossip Girls Penn Badgley who(?) will play the gifted singer songwriter who died in 1997.  I was a massive Buckley fan and remember seeing this video in 1992 on the Chart Show and was completely blown away. I ended up going out specifically to buy the album and wasn't disappointed. It was spine tingly good and went on to become a blueprint for Muse, Coldplay and a bucketful of bands & artists.
