Fiona Apple - Parting Gift (2005)

When Fiona Apple came out with Extraordinary Machine in 2005, it had been a long, complicated, six-year wait for her fans. The album was recorded, then mixed, then shelved, then recorded again, then mixed again, then leaked on the internet, and then finally released for real. Although the record was not Fiona's biggest commercial success, it did get a lot of critical attention, and for those who were waiting all those years, it was heaven sent.There was one song that was on the official release that hadn't been on the Jon Brion-produced leak - 'Parting Gift'. It was a back-to-basics kind of song, just Fiona and her piano, and the lyrics were almost painfully clever.

To this day, it's still my favourite song on the album, and even though it's basically a song about the breakup of a relationship that ended badly, somehow it's not a sad song, and there's even a hint of nostalgia tinged with hope in there.Fiona has always been known for being a little out-there with her songwriting, and this song is no exception, but the rawness of it is captivating, and the melody is catchy enough that you'll find yourself singing along the second time through... and the third time, and the fourth time, and so forth.

Radiohead - Kid A
For me, as for many, it was the Radiohead album that changed everything. I'd always had problems "getting" them before, and as it turned out, what I needed from them was something less accessible rather than more. I went to HMV and bought this album the day it came out solely on the strength of the hype; when I got in the car and put the disc in, from the first notes of 'Everything in Its Right Place' I knew this album was going to be a winner for me. Today, this is still my favourite song on the album, and I listen to it whenever I'm feeling particularly nostalgic for the time around the turn of the century. I was aware that many fans didn't like Radiohead's new direction, but for me it was something so fresh and different from everything else that was coming out at the time, I couldn't resist it, even if it meant that the 'traditional' Radiohead fans would either have to jump ship or get used to the change. To this day, I think this song has aged well and doesn't have much of the datedness of other songs that came out around the same time. I often throw this album into the shuffle mix when I have friends over, and this song almost always gets a very positive 'oh yes, great tune' reaction when it comes on.

Madonna - 'Ray of Light' 

So it's 2012 now, and Madonna is out on tour with yet another new album. Even considering that Madonna put her first single out thirty years ago, somehow it's still difficult to believe that 'Ray of Light', which represented her most drastic self-reinvention up to that point, is now nearly half her career ago. That turning point in 1998 brought a lot of new people into Madonna's fan circle. I hadn't ever really been crazy about her, but at the time I was well into the style of William Orbit, and when I first heard 'Ray of Light' on the radio I just knew the song had something to do with Orbit. That his presence is felt so strongly both on the song and throughout the album is a credit to it, and was something so very different from anything Madonna had done before. The song came out on CD (remember those?) in May, and I pretty much spent the entire summer with it on repeat. This was very out of character for me; I had never really been a Top 40 kind of girl and 'Ray of Light' gave me hope that chart music could actually be decent. Obviously radio pop has taken a lot of twists and turns since that fateful summer, as has Madonna's career, but this will always be a standout song for me, and pretty much takes me right back to 1998 every time I hear it.
