Ibeyi - 'Ghosts' (2014)

This track, from French/Cuban duo, Ibeyi has been following me around all week. Apart from some stunning vocals and tidy key playing, it's a haunting (pun not really intended, really) song. A reminder that we all have 'ghosts', some more difficult to exorcise than others, very annoying. Taken from their recent, self titled album out on XL recordings.

Matthew E White - 'Rock & Roll Is Cold' (2015)

You can't beat a bit of good ol' honky tonk piano. You can almost see yourself in the Double Deuce from the film Roadhouse. Patrick Swayze with his arms crossed is in the corner giving a knowing nod to the band who are providing good clean wholesome entertainment to the Southern revellers. The retro sounding Matthew E White was a big player in my 2012 as I was super impressed with the track Big Love. I enjoy his more up beat songs such as this new track from his second album due out on 9th March but if you prefer his more laid back approach, check out Tranquilly too which was a song he wrote for the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman of whom he was a big fan.

Mysteries - Authenticity Machine (2014)


Moody, doomy and the closet thing to Elbow since Elbow? Mysteries are..well a mystery. Although they are based in Los Angeles they 'supposidly' have not even revealed themselves to their LA record label, Felte. If true, they've taken the let the music do the talking to the next level. This appears on their debut album, New Age Music Is Here

LED ZEPPELIN - Your Time is Gonna Come

It is my 3rd week on vacation in Thailand with Shell Hunter and London Scouser. I am a big fan of the place and have been probably about 10 times over the past 30 years. When I worked in Saudi Arabia during the eighties we used to go quite often go for a spot of R&R. In these days I could write my own tickets with Saudia Arabian Airlines. 'These were the Days my friend'. And as Mary Hopkins said.. 'I wish I stayed in the fookin' valleys!'

I first heard Led Zeppelin on an Atlantic Sampler  from 1970,  what a brilliant album that was, check it out.

Your time is Gonna Come is from their first album and has always been a favourites of mine. The second track from Houses of the Holy and is a nice little bit of Reggae-ish. Not their finest hour, but what the 'ell I'm on holiday and  I like it.

Never mind it has not been all bad, the weather has been in the twenties with blue skies.  We had a nice meal by the sea last week. I should have not had that third brandy, I should not have stopped of at that new bar on the way home! I should not have gone to Pat's Bar!

Waking up the next morning was one of 'those',  Oh God! what happened, did I upset Old Ma, did I kill anybody, how did I get home?.

I can't take my drink anymore. Normally I do not drink much these days but when I do get the opportunity I tend to go for it. I really should know better. I did find a Pop Corn wrapper, so I must have given a large bowl a hammering as there was little evidence left apart from a few kernels that did not pop. But I don't like Pop Corn!

I had the hungers all bloody day and still felt a bit off the day after. So the moral of the story is, if you can't handle your Pop Corn, then stay out of Pat's Bar!

BELLE AND SEBASTIAN - The Boy With the Arab Strap (1989)

I did a post a few weeks back about making up compilations for Old Ma, they were called 'Michele Friendly'.

Compilations have always been a big part of my life, I started with cassettes in the early seventies, the first series was what I called  'All Time Greats',  I thought of an artist and would get hold of what I thought was the best track by that artist. Not always easy back in those days.

It was usually quite straight forward. For example Procol Harum would be a Whiter Shade of Pale, The Byrd's and Mr Tambourine Man, Led Zeppelin with  A Whole lot of Love,

 "Hold on" you may say, but what about Stairway to Heaven? But it was my choice and I did try to be as fair as I could be.

I continued with the task until a few years ago, but have not updated the file for several years. The file of MP3s is now over 32gb. I did relent and later I included all the best tracks for each artist. It was my labour of love. The Beatles and Dylan files, went into the hundreds.  If any stranger came round and music was required, it was easy to slip on some ' All Time Greats' as eventually your were bound to get a 'hit'.

There were compilations for the Best of the Month, compilations for going on Holiday, compilations for World Cups and compilations for Weddings, Funerals, anything . Probably one of the best was  Don't Like Yours, shortened to DLY.

This started because, when we all came back from the pub or a meal out, we always had to play music and we all wanted to be first to get our tracks on. 

This developed into 3 each, when you selected 3 tracks, then the next person selected their 3 tracks and so on. It meant that there was no 'hogging' the music.

If you went to the toilet or left the room when somebody else's tracks were on, well that just was not done and was frowned upon and could even result in missing a round of three.

The DLY was great, we each selected say 5 tracks, we sometimes had themes or you had to include an oldie. We ended up having many DLY Cd's which could easily be slipped on when we were all together. This stopped all the talk about 'hogging'.

I suppose Tune Doctor was a bi-product of this.

Each Christmas we all prepare our best 20 tracks of the year and we play them on random on Xmas Day and News Years day. This is also always met with great fan fair and excitement.

If we go on holiday together, well we always chose 4 or 5 tracks each and then we can play the official holiday Tape/CD/MP3, (what ever makes you comfortable) when we are in each others room for pre-evening or after anything. We have on tap, music we will all love, apart from London Scouser's of course.

I chose Belle and Sebastian, as this was a track on an early DLY which was not my track, but one from London Scouser and I loved it.   

By the way I don't like Yours.

NILS LOFGREN - Keith Don't Go(1975)

There was a time when Nils was the hottest property around, he had a couple of albums that were nothing short of immaculate. His first solo album the self titled 'Nils Lofgren' (1975) contained fabulous guitar based ditties, they were melodic and had superb guitar work all the way through. 'Keith don't Go' was probably the highlight and this is a drawn out version showcasing the talent of Nils. It is a must see. This is one of the great all time riffs. What's your favourite riff! then?

I shared a house in 1974 with a guy and I had earlier introduced him to Led Zeppelin. Was that a mistake? You bet it was! he became obsessed with them. He played them all the time, he talked about them all the time, he even wore Led Zeppelin T-shirts, the sad bastard. Did he not know the rules. It is never cool to wear the T-shirt of the group that you love.

It got to the stage I could not listen to Zep anymore he had put me completely off. It was his group, he had discovered, them they were exclusively his.

A year or so later (I was married then) .We both went to Nottinghill Gate (on a release day)  to brouse through all the second hand record shops there. In one shop, there it was 'Phisical Graffiti' (1975). It had got brilliant reviews, I was wavering, I wanted it. He grabbed it and I had to bite the bullet, but next to it, shining in all its glory was Nils second album 'Cry Tough(1976)' I casually picked it up it. I was satisfied, my cravings were fulfilled.

It was brilliant and this track blew me away as it still does today. After the guitar solo in the middle you are simply left breathless with pleasure.  

'I swore I was in Heaven'

Nils played on Neil Young's 'After the Gold Rush' and has been part of Springsteen's E Street Band, well if that's not a recommendation?
