I just love Jimmy LaFave's voice and his interpretation of Dylan's songs and there is quite a few. It is a wonder he has not released a double album of Dylan covers. Come on Jimmy you must do it? for all us Dylan Cover fans.

The track can be found on his excellent new album The Night Tribe (2015).

Following are two live takes of the song, the next one is from a concert at The Folk Alliance International 2015 in Kansas City. The next one I don't know where its from but what I can say is, they are all great.

Its a tough call picking the 3 best Dylan Covers from 2012 especially when you have had such a high volume of great releases, think the 78 track.Chimes of Freedom: Songs of Bob Dylan  for starters. I had to pick one from there, didn't I, it would have been rude not to.

 So here are 3 from 2012, maybe not your best, but I liked them  :

 

JIMMY LA FAVE - Red River Shore

I love Jimmy Lafave's voice and he is one of the top interpreters of Dylan songs and in fact any other song he puts his mind too. I would say Red River Shore is probably my favourite Dylan Cover of the Year. It is just a great song. It is amazing it did not get a release and we had to wait until a Genuine Bootleg (well most of us). It can be found on Jimmy's album 'Depending on the Distance'. A cover of  'Tomrrow is a Long Time' can also be found on this album. Great stuff!

This is from the amazing project for Amnesty,  Chimes of Freedom: Songs of Bob Dylan, 78 bleeding covers. Christmas came early this year. There are of course many more gems here, but I have chosen this one simply because I like it. Well that's my excuse.

ERIC BIBB - The Times They are a Changin'

The Eric Bibb cover I chose as he is kind of personal. I was introduced to a Bibb concert by a dear friend, two weeks later we also went together to see Bob himself in London Docklands.  Sadly within 6 month my friend had succumbed to  the dreaded Big C.

This exellent cover can be found on Bibb's album 'Deeper in the Well'

It has been a great year for Dylan Covers, I keep discovering gems all the time and as long as I am still keen, I  will share them with you. Too late to stop now.....oh no! that's Van.


What is your best 3 Dylan Covers this year. Let me know! I am always looking for ones I have missed. I have now gathered quite a large catalogue of Bobby covers (MP3 etc). If I have it I will share.

CAT POWER - Stuck inside a Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again

I went with Cat Power's version from the 'I'm Not There' Soundtrack. Excellent Soundtrack, but if the truth be know the film was disappointing. It had its moments but they were few and far between. Other contenders were again the Grateful Dead and Steve Gibbons. 

BECK - Leopard-Skin-Pill-Box Hat

I like Beck's version from the Album  'War Child - Heroes vol. 1' it does stray away a bit from the original but never the less, I like it and it's my choice, so there. Other ones I considered were versions by Raphael Saddiq and Jimmy Lafave.

RICHIE HAVENS - Just Like a Woman


This was a difficult one as there are so many fantastic covers of this brilliant Dylan song. This version is  Live from 1974 but his studio version taken from the album 'Mixed Bag' (1967) is probably better . There were so many contenders here, Van Morrison, Jo Cocker and Jeff Buckley to name but a few. 

EARL SCRUGGS - Most likely You go Your Way


I love this version taken from the album 'Live at Kansas Stat'(1973) great backing and I just love his voice. Other possibilities were the Nighthawks or the Yardbirds.

DEBORAH COLEMAN - Temporary Like Achilles

This cover is taken from the excellent 'Blues on Blonde on Blonde' it is one of these songs which has not been covered too often. My other choice that I had available was by the Don Olsen Gang, which is more than acceptable too.

FOUR TOPS - Walk Away Renee(1966)

I did not think it was possible to get any better than the Four Tops version of the Left Banke's song 'Walk away Renee' It is Tamala Motown at its very very best. Lead vocalist Levi Stubbs(R.I.P.)  is in my top 5 all time voices. It is just pure magic and I never and never will get tired of hearing it. 

When I heard the Jimmy Lafave version it was only by chance, I was searching out some Dylan covers's  and he is quite prolific in that respect. I saw it on one of his albums and thought I would give it a listen and it just blew me away. It is another one of these songs I wanted to share and with my enthusiasm all I did was put people off. It is a great take, he has superb voice and it is a slowed down version. You can almost touch the pain, it is that good. Definitely up there now in my best all time break up songs.

I first heard the Four Tops version in 1966 when I was in a car on the way to an athletics meeting in Forrest, 20 miles east of Inverness. I was representing my school in the high Jump. I remember the guy from Gordonstoun College for Boys (Prince Charles once attended there) had his coach. He was about 6 foot 5 wore one spiked shoe and the other foot was bare. He had an amazing technical jump and received massage after every jump, he had specially prepared isotonic drinks.  I was in bare feet and had a weird jump style it was a cross between the scissor jump and the frosbury flip. For sustenance, I had a bag of crisps and a coke. But it seemed to worked.

I was determined not to let this ponce beat me. We both equalled the games record, but the ponce beat me on count back. I had more failures than him.

On the way back I heard Walk away Renee again and it more than made up for my failure. That was the end of my High Jump career. You have to be 9 feet tall to be any good.

So I walked away.
