Judy Collins - Send in the Clowns

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

DREICH

'I thought that you'd want what I want'

JUDY COLLINS - Send in the Clowns

HOUDINI'S PUNCH

Red telephone boxes

smelt of piss
i never saw it comming
Houdini's Punch

my mind was numb
a marching zombie
owned by the night
the hail, the sleet
the maggot wind
the dreich

 Houdini's punch
garrotting my guts
 twisting, strangling
 tighter and tighter
the bile rising
i needed to vomit
i wanted to scream!
howl!
but nothing came out

i arrived
 at i don't know where
 or how i got there
i did 'nt care
i had lost the night
i had lost my love

The Beatles - I'm so Tired/Happiness is a Warm Gun

SHE HAD A BIRDS NEST IN HER HAIR

 THE BEATLES - I' so Tired (1968)

The Birds Nest

I walked into the pub
i had not seen her for years
there was that familiar feeling
deep in my guts
she could still bring it out
she still had that power
we briefly kissed

she removed her dark glasses
her eyes were bruised
her lips were swollen
she look tired almost beat
there was no sparkle in her eyes

he was abusing her
he was beating her
how could anyone
harm my fragile angel
that bastard should hang

he should be fed to isis

she begged me to stay
she could not be alone
she held me tight
the whole night
as if  I were her life she was holding

i put her on a plane the next day
she needed her home

her kin
time to rest
she needed time to recover

a few weeks later she called
she had two tickets for our idol
he was playing Earls Court

i still had her copy of Blonde on Blonde
i never returned in the sixties
when she was a child
and i was just a child
when we loved like the wind
like flowers in the wind

we went to see our idol
she had regained her joy
she looked so beautiful
i could not take my eyes away from her
her smile lit up the Court

she had a birds nest in her hair

Stuart A. Staples - Goodbye to Old Friends

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

THE PRISON
A SINGLE TEAR

STUART A. STAPLES -  Goodbye to Old Friends (2006)

THE PRISON

She held my arm tightly
with both her hands
her face was pale
with a hint of pink on her cheeks
a single tear trickled down
she was usually so strong
always in control
i gently pulled away
she released her grip
i turned around
there was no pleasure
in my control
no pleasure at all
i did not look behind

i kept on walking
there was no magnetic pull
dragging me back
nothing
i was free

free from the prison
 that was her

Richard Harris - A Tramp Shining/Patsy Cline - I Fall To Pieces

Old Pa's Wednesday Club

...Everybody's got to learn sometime!

A down guy
RICHARD HARRIS - A Tramp Shining

  Destruction 2

The phone rang
it was her
she wanted to meet
my heart

my chest
went into explosion mode
i had difficulty to balance
it had been 6 months
since she walked away

6 months
 since the destruction

'she wanted me back!
did she want me back?'

'A tramp shining' came into my mind'

to think i used to be in control
and used to run the show

'she wants me back
i want her back'

the day arrived

i was trembling with excitement
she looked even better
than the golden image

 she looked beautiful
the smile

the cynism
that is why I loved her

everything I said was like a movie
my confidence was back
that old swagger was there

'Oh! its great to keep in touch,
it is so good that we can still be friends,
have you got a new girlfriend?

i have met someone
his name is Angelo
he's comes from Italy'

i crumbled
and i fell to pieces

PATSY CLINE - I Fall to Pieces

If you get the chance to watch the Patsy Cline story it is a great watch. It is called 'Sweet Dreams' and stars Jessica Lange.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - David Ackles - The Road to Cairo

MIDWEEK CRISIS you have lost your way, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we have David Ackles and he will show you the Road to Cairo
DAVID ACKLES - The Road to Cairo(1968)
An American Goth

The Road from East Kilbride

It was my first time in London
She had moved there
I had some interviews for jobs planned
So I could join her

There were decisions to make

I worked with the Tax Office in Scotland at the time.
(I was more a Robin Hood figure than that prat John Osbourne)
We went to Leicester Square
I was impressed with all the lights
The buzz
There was this Bar
I recall it had a large cowboy stood outside
The music was loud
The music was great
It was my type of music
This song stood out
I did not know who it was by
The words the Road to Cairo
Rang around my head

We stayed in the Bar
For a long long time
For the music and the drinking
For more music and more drinking

I just had to find my way
I had to find a way to Cairo

I immediately bought David Ackles albums 'David Akcles' and 'American Gothic' both are brilliant. His music is so underrated. The 'Road to Cairo' later took on another significance. My wife was born in Egypt and lived in Cairo for many years.  Although the song is about the American version of Cairo.

Julie Driscol and Brian Auger also did a pretty good version of the song.

TUNE DOCTOR'S SPRING COLLECTION

The daffodils are trumpeting the arrival of spring, the birds are clearly 'at it' (apart from the wife) and it is really ok to sneak a cheeky cream egg when paying for your petrol at the station.

So here are four songs from the Tunedr crew that fill us with hope and ting.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Thunderclap Newman - 'Something in the Air' (1969)

A Soul to Rest

It was Spring
I was on the bus to Nairn with my girlfriend
She did not go into school that Friday
She told the Hostel she was going home to Mallaig for the week-end
We hired a caravan for that week-end
It was daring, it was exciting
At last we could be together, wake up together
Just be together, alone

We had no sheets, or anything
The course army blankets, they felt like mulberry silk
On our naked skin
The moon light was shining bright
We strolled along the beach, hand in hand
She wore my shirt, I wore hers
Her golden hair shone
Her bright blue eyes sparkled like jewels in the moonlight
Our bare feet tingled in the cold North Sea water

We gazed deeply into each other
We both knew

There was something, there was 'Something in the Air'.
The Beach
Sfw:-
Simon & Garfunkel - The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)

My first choice for a song for spring would have been "Always Spring" by I'm from Barcelona, but I have already written about it, so it has to be this by Simon & Garfunkel. This uplifting song always reminds me of learning to play guitar.  At the time I could never quite figure it out,  I'd play, pause, rewind, repetitively until eventually I mustered something that resembled the record.  Ironically if I waited until YouTube I could have learned it in an instant! Bloody YouTube!

Flycasual:-
Biz Markie - Spring Again (1989)

Ah, finally it's the arse end of Winter, one of my favourite times of the year. All this was confirmed to me recently at work, where pallets upon pallets of cute, fluffy, new born baby chicks were jetting off from the UK to far more exotic climes such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and erhm....Tehran. Most of them die!!....but that's ok because Spring's here!! Hoorah!

Seasonal themed, classic Old skool Hip-Hop from the legendary portly MC, Biz Markie. The video is worth the entrance money alone, I wish all my Springs were that loaded.

There's a chick stuck in my throat!

Shell Hunter:-
The Rumble Strips - 'Girls and Boys in Love' (2007)

Just one more week before we are over the last hurdle and the clocks go forward. Finally! This moment signifies the beginning of spring! We are starting to get phrases like "hottest day of the year so far" and can actually see the sun for more than just a fleeting visit! It's simple really, these things make me smile and this song by The Rumble Strips fits nicely with it's plinky piano and and title line about plenty of girls and boys in love. Its positively contagious! Although the song is about a post break up time (one for you sfw, fly and pa), it also mentions moving to a new city and starting afresh! The song is taken from their album "Girls and Weather" (how fitting!) and is a pretty good live performance. I've read there is also a Hot Chip remix of it so get looking!

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat

MIDWEEK CRISIS, you are feeling a little down, Come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we have got Leonard Cohen, he will cheer you up!

It was torn at the shoulder

  The Black Trench Coat

She wanted to spread her wings
(her thighs)
it was January, it was winter, it was cold
i was alone in my dungeon
the single bar heater gave little warmth
'Songs of Love and Hate' arrived today
it was on repeat
a bottle was on the table
two fingers of comfort were left
the words 'Jane came by with a lock of your hair'
stung, it stung in my grieving ears
the cigarette smoke froze in the cold
the bottle stood empty
the room slowed down
i needed a drink
i slipped on my 'Famous' Black Trenchcoat
i headed for the door, the night, the biting rain
searching for a Bar, searching for anywhere
wanting her

'did she ever go clear'
