Liars - 'Mess On A Mission' (2014)

The party has been overrun, it's late, unwanted friends/your dad/the in-laws/your neighbours (sounds like a crap party anyway) have all over stayed their welcome. Solution? You play a 'Shifter', that'll get the buggers moving! 'Mess on a Mission' is a definite shifter, I love it and don't worry Liars, this really is a good thing. I was enamored with the experimental Brooklyn trio's last offering, 2012's WIXIW and Mess, their 7th album has just been released. Time to throw a bash I think.

Hello Caller - 'Harkening Darkness

Following on from my TOTW last week, I'm still in my 'Austin Phase' and have chosen Hello Caller for my latest offering. Taken from their 2012 album 'Dark Twain' this is a really pleasant track to listen along to featuring a few instruments that I like. They've got some strings, a snare and what sound like a ukulele I think... but what do I know... I used to listen to Stock, Aitken & Waterman !!! The album is definitely worth a listen to as well.

Pure X - Starlight (2014)
“Starlight” is the first single from Austin Texas' Pure X which features on their forthcoming LP, Angel.  It's jangly, psychedelic feel takes you on a musical trip that feels like you're floating on clouds.  Perfection!

at the swim up bar in Thailand and it comes on.

Real Estate - How Might I Live (2014)


 

Here is a great track from Real Estate called How Might I live (2014) and is from the new album Atlas (2014). Just fantastic pure pop, exactly what it says on the tin. Nothing more nothing less. It is just class. I have to say they remind me so much of the fabulous Teenage Fanclub. It is about time we heard from them too. I have been listening to this album quite a lot over the past couple of weeks. Great stuff, great stuff to get you humming along. Give it a go you may be pleasantly surprised.

The Big Pink - 'Give It Up' (2012)

Although I sort of liked a couple songs from The Big Pink's first album, I didn't take them very seriously for some reason. This song which I heard in the week, has really changed my mind. I love the hip hop undertones, piano and brass combination. Before the vocals came in, I actually thought it was a nice 70's throw back! It looks like I will definitely enjoy the slightly different direction of their new album, 'Future This' which was released on 16th January. 'Give It up' hasn't been released as a single but I have a feeling it might in future and will be sure to get more skeptics like me on side. Check out the single(this version is remixed by Forest Swords) previously released from Future This, 'Hit the Ground (Superman), below and download it for free! Result!

The 2 Bears - 'Bear Hug' (2011)

This honey pot of a track has been quite a hit around the club circuits over the last few months, I should know cause I've been larging it. Actually I haven't and feel queasy at the thought of all nighters, with work and parenting the only larging is largely done in bed.  The 2 Bears is a side project from Joe Goddard, of geek chic electronic maestros, Hot Chip along with DJ Raf Daddy and 'Bear Hug' is taken from their forthcoming album, Be Strong out on January 30th. Now some people may Pooh Pooh this track as a bit of a novelty record but they're not taking themselves too seriously, it's fun, catchy and more importantly my 2 and half year old son likes it. Besides it doesn't really matter when they can make dance music of this quality.

Bruce Springsteen - 'We Take Care of Our Own' (2012)

This is the first track from Bruce's New album 'Wrecking Ball' which is released on the 5th of March 2012. Full details and information about the album can be found here. This is a good taster and is classic Bruce and if you are a fan this will certainly not disappoint. Roll on March.!

I seem to be having a manic 2012. Work seems to be consuming all my time and I'm finding it very difficult to promote the blog, listen to new music, and enjoy it all.  This blogging lark isn't easy and it's hard to get 'new' listeners, let alone win them over. So when I noticed that Real Estate's latest video release featured a 'street team' it made me want to drive around my local town and drop @TuneDoctor business cards all over the place - unfortunately for me/us - I live so far out in the wilds of Wales that these will probably only get people asking when the surgery is opening. Real Estate - Green Aisles (2011)

Real Estate are a Indie Rock band from New Jersey who have been riding the hype machine over the last few years.  "Green Aisles" features on their 2011 album "Days", which for me is a 'Kentucky-fried-chicken-esq' tub of "Smiths-My Bloody Valentine-arpeggio" driven American indie rock. The album has been critically acclaimed with it appearing on numerous album of the year lists.

Jimmy Cliff - Guns of Brixton - Ft Tim Armstrong from Rancid (2011)

This is a great version of the Clash song 'Guns of Brixton' and is from a new EP from Jimmy Cliff called 'Sacred Fire (2011)' this is a real return to form and even contains a full version of Dylan's 'A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall' as well as a Dub version of 'Guns of Brixton'. I had to get this immediately when I found out today of its existence, this of course is straight in as my track of the week, The Harder they Fall and all that!.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - How Can U Love Me? (2011)

This is one of the most unique songs I've heard in awhile, although released earlier this year, I've only recently come across it. It's from a US/Kiwi band hailing out of Portland, Oregon and I just love it, with it's cool bass, vocals and a fantastic B-boy breakbeat, I thought it was an old 80's funk track in the same mould as ESG. Which is why I had a flashback to my youth growing up in Saudia Arabia in the early 80's, where as a fledgling B-boy, we used to bust moves at the local supermarket, The Star Market. I was a pretty crap breaker but I could hump the floor like no other, when doing my move, the Worm. It also sounds like it was actually recorded in the Star Market toilets. I Break Horses - 'Wired' (2011)

I was skimming the XFM new and upfront playlist for anything of interest and the name of this Swedish girl/boy indie duo really appealed to me. Lucky for me, I struck gold this time. It's almost like playing Battleships, you have to keep going til you find a hit! Having only heard of the genre "shoegaze" once before (thanks SFW for Chad VanGaalen- Tracks of the Week 25/09) and loving it, I wasn't surprised to see it again next to these guys. 'Wired' is on their 9 track debut album which was released in August and I've heard nothing but good press. I love the Mazzy Star-esque vocals and can get lost in it's drumming. All it needs is a nice sunny warm day to make it complete. Could be a late contender for my best of 2011 compilation!
