Buffalo Springfield/Robbie Roberson - Broken Arrow

OLD PA'S CORNER

A Broken Heart, a Broken Arrow

'My Mother told me a Trip was a fall!'

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD - Broken Arrow

Here are two completely different songs by two different artist. Both in there own way are utterly fabulous.

The first by Buffalo Springfield is probably one of my favourite Neil Young songs and I have used the line My Mother Told me a Trip was a fall to many time to count. Well it is better than enjoy your trip.

The second was on Robbie Roberson's first solo album and is equally good in a completely different. way.

Ooooh! its enough to make you all quiver!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 18/05/2014 - Gengahr, Neil Young,The Black Keys,Ringo Deathstarr, Michael Jackson

5 tracks to accompany your BBQ sausage feast this week!

Sfw:-
Gengahr - Fill My Gums With Blood (2014)

The sun is out! This infectious track by Londons Gengahr is a perfect partner to the sunshine.  With it's falsetto vocals, funky bass riff and delightful groove, this track is not just a #trackoftheweek - it is already moving into my #tracksoftheyear! Play this when driving and you'll have a smile on your face!

Flycasual:-
Michael Jackson - 'Love Never Felt So Good' (2014)

Blanket! Blanket...Shamon M@&Hfu&%ay! It has been a spectacularly rough couple of months in my professional life, uncertainty for the immediate future and major changes at work, all coming to a head in the middle of last week. I'm glad to say the worst is over and I can get back to a semblance of normality but it was pretty crap. So crap in fact, that I had stopped listening to music because I just couldn't raise myself enough to enjoy it. So on goes the radio, on the way home from work and this song is on, I've heard it before and I'm so cynical on posthumously released material but this is very good. Timberlake lends a hand here (he's always kind of threatened to carry the MJ mantle) and it just fits in nicely to any of Michael Jackson's classics, particularly when he was good....Off the Wall/Thriller era  and I've always been a fan.....eeehh hheee!

Old Pa's Corner :-
Neil Young - The Needle of Death (2014)

Here is a magnificent sparse take of Bert Jansc's brilliant Needle of Death. It really highlights the impact of the song. This is a great performance and is taken from a new LP called A letter Home which Neil made with the help of Jack White.

It is a Lo-Tech collection of old songs by such artists as Dylan and Springsteen. A must listen to.

Shell Hunter:-
Black Keys - 'Fever' (2014)

Today marks the first day of my 'Latitude Fest Quest' where I will feature bands performing at this years Latitude. Yesterday was the big reveal that the whole TuneDr team will be there together to enjoy it, not just me! The Black Keys will be headlining theSunday night at Latitude and that will be a knockout closing show to the weekend, I'm sure. The bluesy rock duo have just released their 8th album called Turn Blue and with Danger Mouse's production, it's getting some great press. I don't think there has been a Black Keys song released in the last few years that hasn't had me in it's grasp at some point or another, you could say they have 'The Key' to a great riff!

London Scouser:-
Ringo Deathstarr - 'God's Dream' (2014)

A couple of months back I stumbled across this band and featured a track from 2012. Now I'm pleased to share a new track from their recently released album of the same name. It features a video that reminds me of something that would have come out back in the seventies (and yes I'm old enough to remember then !!) which I think fits perfectly with the chilled out dreamy vocals.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 08/12/13 - Connan Mockasin, Neil Young, Midlake, Dan Croll, The Courteeners

Five tracks that delivered like an Amazon drone...

Sfw:-
Midlake - Antiphon (2013)

I (usually) find it difficult to listen to a band when they change their lead vocalist. So I was preparing for the worst when lead vocalist Tim Smith left midlake and they promoted Eric Pulido to the main role. I was a huge fan of their 2006 album, The Trials of Van Occupanther, and I just thought "it wouldn't be the same". This is what makes Midlakes "Antiphon" so interesting. It's subtly different but somehow feels the same (even vocally!). 70s folk-meets-soft-rock on paper sounds wrong, but I can assure you, Midlake's 2nd coming may even take them to bigger things!

Flycasual:-
Connan Mockasin - 'Do I Make You Feel Shy' (2013)

New Zealand's musically talented, Connan Mockasin, has been heralded by elements of the music press, as the 'Kiwi Prince'. Interesting, I thought but at first I wasn't so sure as it does sound like he may have recorded this in an underwater harem. Take the 'fluidy' music, high pitched vocals and amorous lyrics along with the elaborate title and you can see the similarities with the diminutive Pop icon. But it grew on me, pretty much in the same why I poopooed Prince's 'Kiss' when it first came out for sounding bloody weird but that turned out well for the both of us. A worthwhile listen, 'Do I Make You Feel Shy?', is taken from Connan's latest solo album Caramel. 'Recorded in an underwater harem'....Prince, take note.

London Scouser:-
The Courteeners - 'Are You In Love With A Notion?' (2013)

I've been a fan of The Courteeners since I first heard 'Not Nineteen Forever' way back in 2008 !! And in the battle of bands named after cars, I much prefer them to The Datsuns. Maybe it's being from Manchester and having a lead singer called Liam, now where have I heard that before ??
This is out on December 09th and it's the third single off of their third album 'Anna'. I found it memorable and catchy on my first hearing which is always a great sign. I've noticed that all the singles off of this album are much more upbeat than their previous ones.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Neil Young - Tell Me Why (2013)

I remember the time of Neil Young's,  After the Gold Rush (1970)  album. It was one of those that was so damm good you could not wait for the next album to come out. Usually you were going to be dissapointed, as really all you wanted was the same album again. When he released  Harvest (1972)  it blew me away. It was 2 out of 2 for Neil.

That is a rare event, like an astorid hitting the earth.  (a big one)

Harvest included one of Old Ma and Moi's 'songs',  Heart of Gold. (she thought I had a Heart of Gold, heh! what did she know?)

This is the first track on Neil Young's live album  Live at the Cellar Door (2013). It is also the first track on ATGR. He played several gigs at this small intimate venue in Washington D.C. in 1970 and this album records this historic set of concerts.

It was recorded in between After the Gold Rush and before Harvest, two albums which are worthy of any music collection. There are 5 tracks from ATGR on this set..

Neil Young at his acoustic best. It's so bloody good!

Shell Hunter:-
Dan Croll - 'Home' (2013)

Dan is back with yet another great single! I remember this one vividly from when he performed it at Latitude Festival in July. He got the crowd to sing the chorus which although we gave it our best efforts was a bit wonky. He's had a pretty busy year touring heavily including most of the summer festivals but the question on everyone's lips is...where is your album Dan? When he does eventually release it, it will be like eating a bag of pic'n'mix. Every one is a winner and for me is full of nostalgia! TRACKS OF THE WEEK 11/11/2012 - Astronauts etc, Lawrence Arabia, Neil Young, Vitalic

Discover our Tracks of the Week!

SFW:-
Astronauts, etc - 'You Can Yell' (2012)

Astronauts, etc is Anthony Ferraro, and there is something about this song. Somewhere in between Bon Iver and Filter, it's a song that will be on my 'Tracks of the Year' and it should be on yours! I absolutely love it.
Shell Hunter:-
Vitalic - 'Stamina' (2012)

Where on earth did I find this little electronic wonder? I saw a CD lying around at work unopened from French music and culture magazine Les Inrockuptibles (official website here if you can speak French!) and after seeing a few familiar artists (Band of horses, Willy Moon and Bat for Lashes) plus some not so familar artists, I took it and said thank you very much! The song that stood out for me was this one from Vitalic (check his website www.vitalic.org), a French born electronic music master. His third album 'Rave Age' was just released on 5th November which Stamina is taken. I love the gritty bass and little distorted voice that makes me imagine a tiny fly trying in vain to tell you off. The video is good but a bit gruesome, much like the Gluttony scene from fantastic film Seven. If you are freshly back from 2 weeks of indulgence as I am and ready to embark on a pre-holiday weight journey, this is just the tune you need to get you into the "feel the burn" mindset! Or just get someone to run ahead of you with a giant burger!
Flycasual:-
Lawrence Arabia  - 'The Listening Times' (2012)
Lawrence Arabia, absolutely nothing to do with Peter O'Toole and Omar Sheriff blowing shit up in the desert but the moniker of Kiwi artist James Milne. The Listening Times is one of the many standouts and latest single of his latest album the excellent, The Sparrow. An album which sounds like it has been recorded in a parallel universe, 70's and 80's style sounds intertwined with vintage Jazz and even 30's era Ragtime, with hints of David Byrne, The Tindersticks and The Divine Comedy but it still manages to sound contemporary. And like The Listening Times, it has an unmistakeable 60's feel to it but with a modern edge, as if it has been dragged through an echo chamber with it's subtle dub undertones. Check out his official site here.....and download The Listening Times for free!

Old Pa's Corner:-
Neil Young - Psychedelic Pill (2012)

Neil Young, what can you say?, would you believe this is second official release this year and his new album 'Psychedelic Pill' with 'Crazy Horse' is a double too. Most artist have a dark and a light side but with Neil Young it is clear cut. If you are familiar with the lighter side 'Heart of Gold' 'Only Love will break your Heart'  then this may be a little bit of a shock to you.. Mr Young can Rock hard with the best of them. He is also a brilliant guitarist.
This taster from the new album fits that hard rock bill. I have not heard the rest of the album yet as I have just returned from holiday but I am looking forward to getting 'stuck in' to it. There are some very long tracks, so I will be expecting lots of guitar solos. Bring it on! Check out the video too. It's cool 'as they say!'

TUESDAY BLUES!! Neil Young/Laura Marling - The Needle and the Damage Done

Neil Young - The Needle and the Damage Done

1993 MTV Unplugged / Harvest

This MTV performance was my introduction to Neil Young and at first I was oblivious to the subject matter. It originally featured on the 1972 album 'Harvest' and it "describes the descent into heroin addiction of musicians he knew" and became a bit of an anthem after Kurt Cobain died.

Fortunately & Naively for me, I'd spent a lot my youth in a safe and secluded expat compound in Saudi Arabia and drugs was something that only happened in the movies. When I returned to the UK I was shocked to find that a school friend ended up living this life and was sadly taken by the "needle and the damage (was) done".

I still adore the song and also enjoy the many cover versions - one notable cover has been done by Laura Marling.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Neil Young - Long May you Run

MIDWEEK CRISIS how do you turn water into gin? Come to WEDNESDAY CLUB, we've got Neil Young, he can't do it but Brian Spencer can.

NEIL YOUNG - Long May You Run(1976)

Who is Brian Spencer? you may ask, well he was a drinking Buddy. One day after work we had a few and the pub closed at three so we went back to my place for some more refreshments and to listen to some sounds. I knew that I had two and a half bottles, one of Gin and one of Whiskey, to compliment the beers we brought back.We finished the booze and I told BS he better go as my wife was returning from work. I quickly filled the empty Gin bottle with water and would replace it later as the gin was my wife's current tipple.

A couple of hours later there was a knock at the door it was BS he had gone to his car and had fallen asleep.
Brian Spencer, Long may You Run

A few weeks later my wife had a visit from her elderly cousin and she offered her a gin and tonic. I had forgotten to replace the in!  Panic! What the hell should I do? With resignation, I decided just to let it happen. They finished the first one and a second was offered. "Oh! you will be getting me tipsy" she said, "don't make it too strong". I sat there trying to supress the a grin on my face.

I don't know how he did it but Brian Spencer had miraculously turned the water in to Gin!

Why Neil Young's 'Long may you Run'? Well for no other reason than I like the song and Brian Spencer, would you believe, was the spitting image of Neil Young.

I should have chosen a track by Placebo.

Oh! by the way the song is about Neil's first car, a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse.

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 31/07/11

Three tracks that 'buffalo-ed our wurzels' this week. Do you have any? Let us know!

Flycasual:-
SBTRKT - 'Wildfire feat Little Dragon'

Oh dear, I'm not sure what the etiquette is here but it's twice a month now Little Dragon have featured on the Tracks of the Week posts. Perhaps not as controversial as having two tracks by the same artist on your C90 mix tape but still a bit naughty, it's my ball anyway.

I just can't help it though, as this track as has been buzzing around my play list for awhile now before I finally took the little sucker in for the attention it deserves. This time though Little Dragon features on UK DJ/producer/re-mixer, SBTRKT's self titled debut album, which was released earlier this year. Like many of the dance artists who don masks, Daft Punk, Deadmau5 and ..erm.. Altern-8, SBTRKT also uses a moniker to allow people to focus on the music as opposed to artist. He has nothing to hide on this form, it has a great Electro feel about it with a wobbly, distorted buzz saw bass all smoothed over by Yukimi Nagano's voice, then of course I just love those sirens. The video is a bit creepy too but then again, I'm a woos.

Sfw:-
Lindsey Buckingham - Seeds we sow
I wouldn't usually listen to this normally, but my not-so-generic MP3 player keeps on playing this whilst on random. Every time I hear it, I can imagine it perfectly fitting on Fleetwood Macs 'Rumours' album, which is a complement as it's one of the biggest selling albums of all time.  For those who don't know, Lindsey was the guitarist for the Mac'.

Old Pa's Corner:-
Neil Young - Amber Jean

WARNING : IF YOU DON'T LIKE COUNTRY BEWARE

This is from Neil's new album 'A Treasure'. Well, although a new release, it is from live performances during his 1984/5 tour. 'Treasure' is definitely the correct choice for the title.

What a fantastic video this is with Neil being accompanied by the International Harvesters ,some of the greatest artists in the history of country music, including the late, great Ben Keith on steel and slide guitar and Rufus Thibodeaux on fiddle. Along with living legends, Spooner Oldham and Hargus “Pig” Robbins on piano, Tim Drummond and Joe Allen on bass and Karl Himmel on drums, among many others.....I love when Neil  goes all country and the fiddle playing here is a real joy. You can't get more country than this, unless Patsy Cline was sitting on Hank's knee singing a duet. Sit back and enjoy.
