The Doors - 'Riders On The Storm'

Saturday Night Jukebox....
Everyone has a guilty pleasure

Cuba Libres all round!!

The Doors - 'Riders On The Storm' (1971)

Part 1...

Old Ma, Old Pa and I went to Cuba on our first real holiday after moving back from Saudi. I remember it so well, it was my first experience of an all inclusive. I was just 16 but no one ever questioned my age when I ordered the drinks. Cuba is a fantastic place, one I'd love to visit again. Havana was full of old school charm and real life. The beach in Varadero was probably one of the most picturesque I've seen, powder white sand and beautiful cool turquoise water. As we all love being on the water, we decided on a Jolly Roger catamaran tour, which is pretty much a booze cruise with other holiday makers but it ticked all the boxes for us! When you bought that, you got the sunset cruise free which could be taken at a later date. We enjoyed the day tour but were looking forward to the next instalment. When we arrived there were already a few revellers on the boat, who had decided to take their freebie immediately after the day cruise. Wow, they're hard core I thought! We soon worked out they were 3 German blokes and saw that they had a couple of empty rum bottles rolling around them. Hmm I smell trouble.....

The tour began and we were soon enjoying the spray on our faces and a few Cuba libres. Suddenly the sky went dark and it became dramatically cold. The waves turned rough and the heavens opened! We had sailed into one of the daily thunderstorms we encountered there! The group of holiday makers ran undercover and were all huddled under the only shelter available in the middle of the boat and reminded me of a busy hen coup. Old pa and I remained where we were, unperturbed by the dramatic change in weather. The skipper managed to guide us into a sheltered bay in between a couple of small deserted islands where we waited for the swell and enormous thunder claps to subside. In the meantime, one of the 3 drunken Germans was just getting into his stride and stood at the highest point he could clamber up to, and shouted as loud as he could: 'I've seen the lightning of the world!' and 'I am Jesus Christ'. It was all very theatrical with the storm above us. He had been getting into everyone's faces during the trip, barging into a large elderly lady and even old pa at one point. The group were almost at breaking point. I remember now I thought the guy looked like the lead singer from Wheatus with his odd specs.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week....

I've seen the lighning of the world......!!

The Doors - The Spy

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

'SPIES IN CRANFORD'

He smirked as he booked me!

THE DOORS - The Spy (1970)

Here are a couple of little stories inspired by Shellhunter's brilliant tale of when her beloved Beetle Jazzman was towed away by Spies.

I nipped out to the local shops one evening and parked my car close by. A Spy was close to me. I asked him if it would be OK to park, as I would only be a couple of minutes.

He said :

'no problem mate!'

I was in the shop about 3 minutes and when I came out he was writing out a ticket. I challenged him!

'You said it was OK to park. Why didn't you say I could not park?'.

'Sorry mate I'm only doing my job. Free parking starts at 7'.

By now it was passed 7.

I was livid and what made matters worse, is that he had a satisfied smirk on his face. I had a hard job just to keep control, I really wanted to smack this guy, but knew I would be taken to the cleaners if I did. I accepted the ticket and paid up the £40 pound fine.

The second story is probably just as bad. It was Christmas Eve and again I parked outside a local mini Supermarket. When I came out, there were several Spies booking everybody who parked on this area, which ran parallel to the main road. It was common practise to park there.

I found out that the Spies did this every Christmas Eve, it was like a Christmas Bonus for them. They were told go out and get X amount of tickets, then they could go home, early trap for Christmas. Make someone happy on Chrstmas Eve. That particular Road was easy pickings.

I despise the 'job' of Spies and would find it very difficult ever do that job.

If I was ever down and out I would rather caress the bottle than do a job like that.

But saying that, I've got a little Pensions and dogs to feed. So lets open that bottle.

And very appropriately, one of my favourite Doors Songs from Morrison Hotel (1970).

WEDNESDAY CLUB - The Leisure Society - We Were Wasted

MIDWEEK CRISIS you are bored, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB  we have the Leisure Society and a great Prehistoric Beast for you entertainment!

THE LEISURE SOCIETY - We Were Wasted(2009)

I was bored the other night, maybe it was the vacuum left as the Football and  Tennis had finished, so I had a look through the list of movies I had available to watch. There was one that stood out that I wanted to see  for some time. It was called 'Tyrannosaur' and was I suppose, what you would call 'A gritty Northern Drama'  it was very dark and bleak, almost brutal at times, but I was held all the whole way to the end. Through all the pain and darkness there was a glimmer of light, maybe a glimmer of  hope!. It certainly is a must watch. If your girl friend is expecting a follow up to Jurassic Park or a Rom Com, well this will not be for her.

There were some interesting songs in the soundtrack, but it was the ending song over the credits that got me. I had to find it immediately. It was by a group I was not familiar with 'The Leisure Society' and the song was called 'We Were Wasted' I think it is brilliant. There is a little hint of 'The End' by the 'Doors' (not a bad thing). They have two albums and I will be checking them out as you read this.

It was one of these moments in music that we all love, that just happens and can happen at any time, I suppose it is a bit like falling in Love, suddenly it is just there!!..........SHARUPPP!!!  let the music speak!!

WEDNESDAY CLUB - The Doors - 'Touch Me'

MIDWEEK CRISIS? You think you have nothing to hide? Come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we have the Doors and they know your deepest secret fears.

THE DOORS - Touch me (1968)

Bloody hell, I have 3 Club tracks to post and I was trying to decide which would be first when I saw this on Youtube and it just took me apart. What a fantastic video of Jim Morrison and The Doors. I was actually looking for one of my favourite Doors songs, 'The Spy' not a well known one I suppose but I just loved the nakedness of it.

'I know your deepest secret fears', I will have to save that for another day.

It is a shame when you hear that Jim was a bit of a 'dick' in real life but he was the ultimate rock star! Brilliant lyrics, beautiful looks but it's the same old story....what does go on between these 'goddamn ears'!?

I will tell you a Doors story,  I will try and make it quick!

I was round a friends house, John Mcewans's, we had a card game going on nothing to serious, 9 Card Brag or later bit more hardcore 3 Card Brag. I loved those card sessions and I usually won or broke even but this night it was the classic scenario, it was the last game, it was only me and John left in the game, I had 3 jacks after going blind..it was unbelievable! I bet everything, even borrowed from the company! John had 3 aces, 10 million to one chance...I was cleaned out. Lucky he was a mate, John (RIP) and I arranged to pay him over 3 months, (there is no guaranteed winning hand my friend). I stayed over that night at Johns and later went into town (Richmond, Surrey) before going home and to cheer me up I bought  'Weird Scenes From Within a Gold Mine' and yes that did cheer me up!

Now you know my deepest secret fears. Never bet on 3 Jacks!

Win some lose some! I say!

Touch me !!!!!
