New Order/Joy Division - In A Lonely place

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

TONE DEATH (an old punk never dies)
A Jeddah Boy!

NEW ORDER - In a Lonely Place

This is a bit of a strange one. A School friend of Flycasual is now part of a band  Mustang.  Check out our Tracks of the Week. They are a Heavy Metal band.  I have know Chris as a kid and he does look the part, even when he was 2 (so did his dad by the way, the late great Clem).  After a few San Miguel's I decides to write a song for them without really knowing their Psych. Which is a bit unfair to them and to me, I suppose. But I was excited about my little challenge.

The idea came very quickly and I was trying to think heavy metal but as Flycasual said to me when I showed him, it leaned towards Punk. Yeah!I suppose it does. But what the hell, I enjoyed it. In fact the next day when walking the dogs I thought of 2 more verses. In my opinion the idea is pretty good, but it needs a good bit of work. A good bit.

Hey! lads if you want some more I am here!

Now I am on a roll, I have been trying for the past few months to think of a theme for a Christmas song and I have just come up with exactly what I want, it was not that easy.  Well there is money to be made there and it would be great to leave some legacy for the kids. I am serious about this, I will let you know how I progress. I only have the idea now to do it!! But it is a good idea!!

Hey! SFW, I may call on you for this one.

Why In a Lonely Place?, well I sneaked.in  for a sneaky pint today and I heard it on the pub radio. I was in shock, but I was flooded with memories. ! It was good enough for me!

Here it is Tone Death  in all its bollocks!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 13/04/2014 Glass Animals, New Order, Cousin Marnie

Three tracks that weren't in opposition for us...

Sfw:-
Glass Animals - Gooey(2014)

This ones a bit, er, Gooey.  With its artsy video that features characters who pose nude, dance, wrestle, and all linked together by the presence of a slimy, mysterious substance. Despite that sounding like a Saturday night out for MTV Valleys - the bump and groove beat and falsetto vocals is as infectious as a bout of ebola. It's by Glass Animals, an Oxford based four-piece who have just released it on their 'Gooey' Ep.  It was produced by writer/musician/producer/extraordinaire Paul Epworth.

Old Pa:-
New Order -Singularity (2014)

It is always exciting to hear a new, New Order song even although probably their best days have come and gone. This is a live version of the new song Singularity recorded at Lollaplooza in Buenos Aires. There are several takes of the song available in YouTube, none are brilliant quality, but this take is about the best. It is typical of vintage New Order and has a nice hook (with apologise to Hooky who is not there).  I am certainly looking forward to a rumoured album to be released later this year. I will definately give it a shot..

Flycasual:-
Cousin Marnie - 'Farewell Nellie' (2013)

I've been captivated by the haunting 'Farewell Nellie', all this week. Daydreaming about the song being an old sea shanty for a fisherman off to dangerous seas, or a Country ballad about a soldier off to war, or a disgruntled airport worker, like I, reluctantly driving into work early one morning, the parallels are striking! I read about London's Cousin Marnie (not really her name) earlier this year, about how her style ranges from Country to Hip Hop to Folk. "A treat for the ears!', I thought and last year's debut EP, Sleeping, is a worthy listen. Which interestingly covers four Carter Family tracks, a group that were a big influence on her. Her forthcoming EP, Cain, is out later this year and you can hear the title track 'Cain' on Soundcloud.

Ry Cooder/New Order - The Very Thing That Makes her Rich (Makes Me Poor)/Thieves Like Us

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

'THE ONLY CRIME'
Thieves like us!

RY COODER -   The Very Thing That Makes Her Rich (Makes Me Poor)(1979)

One thing that really gets to me is people who make bets and will gladly accept the winnings when they win. But if they loose, well that is another story. They just will not pay up!. In my eyes that is a crime, it is stealing.

I was watching a movie the other day. I think it was the Kite Runner,  but I watch a lot of movies.  This guy said that there is only one crime and that is stealing. When you think about it, he could be right, You could apply the term steal to all crimes, including murder and rape and stealing you wife's last chip, when she is not looking.

What a wise fellow, I thought!

Here are two examples of bets I have made and won, but the thieves would not pay up.

I played football for a while in my thirties and one day a 'mate' said I had put on weight.  I immediately said I could loose 15 kilos in 3 months. Bets were taken and I stood to loose about £200, a lot of money in these days. The bets were with 4 different guys.

I ran, I played tennis, I played squash. I played football. sometime all in the same day. I was not going to drink alcohol until I lost the weight.

To cut the story short I lost the 15 kilos, well within the 3 months and 3 of the guys paid up on the spot. One guy just would not pay up. I hassled him, I embarrassed him whenever I met him. In front of all the guys I would go for him, I was relentless, but he just would not pay up.

What a thief!, what a looser!

I sort of follow cricket in a small way, but a Pakistani guy I worked with was a real enthusiast and new all the Pakistani National Cricket Team. England were playing Pakistan in a one day series and I said to my learn ed collegue that England would win the first match  (England were very poor at that time). He laughed and we ended up having a bet.

England won of course. He said double or quits on the next match (this great Pakistani team were incapable of loosing 2 one day matches back to back).

England won of course. He said double again on the 3rd match. I agreed,  but I said this is the last time as eventually his team must win and he agreed.

England won of course. He just would not pay up and always made excuses. As we were in Saudi Arabia and betting is frowned upon I could not embarss him as much as he deserved, but he never did pay up.

What a thief!, what a looser!

WEDNESDAY CLUB - New Order/Joy Division - Ceremony

MIDWEEK CRISIS there is no Order in your life, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB and join the Ceremony and we will bring you Joy

Watching forever

NEW ORDER - Ceremony

Ian Curtis was taken from us, there was a large void which could never be filled. Rumours were flying around that Joy Division would carry on with the a new name New Order (oh no! not more Nazi references) and a new single was set for release.

Finally the day arrived myself and a friend were at the record shop 9 o'clock sharp to get hold of that single. Two un-released Joy Division songs. We could not contain our excitement and rushed home to play the contents of that beautifull gold package.  It must be a similar feeling to be holding an Olympic Gold Medal. (well almost)
Heaven knows!
Both tracks were utterly fabulous, but it was not Ian, but it was no disappointment either. The B -side was pure Curtis.  'In a Lonely Place'  it seemed to be tailor made for all us mourning fans. The sound of  thunder, the grave yard,  it was just what we needed to let go and embrace 'New Order'.

My friend and I carved in the brickwork on my front wall of my living room B&R JD all a bit pathetic now, but at the time it was important to us. When I sold the house 20 odd years later it was still there and I bet it is still there now.(My wife never noticed as it was discreetly done, if she found it, I would have been in serious!!!)  We were bit like love struck lovers carving their names on the old oak tree.

Later that year New Order re-recorded it with new member Gillian Gilbert and released it in 12 inch format. Of course I bought that also.

When the Mp3 boom arrived we were soon to discover other early versions with Ian himself on vocals.
There is also my favourite version on 'Still' (The release of that double album was another momentous occasion) when you can here Ian's vocals very low in the background then suddenly the full vocals in all their glory come through, it is stunning and always delivers a chicken skin moment.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - New Order - 'Age of Consent'

New Order - 'Age of Consent' (1982)

How do you follow Joy Division, the simple answer is, New Order. Their first album without Ian was 'patchy' but with enough brilliance, to still await their second offering. The second album ' Power, Corruption and Lies' hit the mark 'big time' and almost defined the sound of the 80's, synths were now the all the rage. There are many outstanding tracks on the album (Your silent Face) but the stand out track is for sure 'Age of Consent' . I first played the song to my Son & Daughter from the album, 'New Order, Live at the BBC 1993' and they loved the version....there is a great line, when Bernard uses the ' F' word and it sounds just right.....they were so disappointed when the original did not have that '4' letter word' .....  'kids'.
Great song (one of my favourites) and a great album.

I did try to find the BBC version, but alas!! If you want to hear it, let me know...we can sort it out.
