THE BEATLES - Positively 4th Street

Here are some interesting ones. First up is none other that The Beatles themselves doing a little warm up by doing Positively 4th Street. Pity about the quality and it is a shame the version is not longer. This can be found on Let It Be Rehearsals Vol 2.

Now this is really good, especially as it is rumoured that Phil may well be one of the influence why Dylan wrote the song. It is also relevant, as at one point Bob apparently threw Phil out of his car (not literally. This is well documented in the book Positively 4th Street,  a must read. The short track is on

Hero of the Game - Live  New York Radio Broadcast 1965. 

Finally one of my favourite covers and this is a version by Lucinda Williams and can be found on Bottom Line Archive Series Vol 1

JONI MICHELL - It's All Over Now Baby Blue (demo)

Here are three delicious covers by Joni Mitchell, the first is a demo version of It's all over now Baby Blue and can be found on the Complete Geffen Recordings Box Set (2003). It was recorded as part of the Night Ride Home (1991) Sessions.

In the second cover by Joni, she is joined by James Taylor, it was recorded  on the 16th Oct 1970 at a Benefit concert for Greenpeace. The Concert was organised by Joni and Phil Ochs and James Taylor was a surprise guest. I believe there is a CD around of the concert.

The third is taken from a duet with the great Johnny Cash where Joni joines Mr Cash on a rendition of Girl from the North Country. It is from the Johnny Cash Show.

GENE CLARK - Changes

I first heard this song on a sampler included with the price of a music magazine (not free with the magazine, the word free always annoyed me) It was sung by Gene Clark, one of the original Byrds. I loved the song and when I found it was written by Phil Ochs I just had to get hold of that version. I was very aware of PO since the early sixties when I heard Joan Baez's version of his There but for Fortune an absolutely magnificent song.

PO is quite an interesting character and was a contemporary of Dylan and I have always thought there was undercurrents in the books about Dylan that he considered that PO was something of a threat to his  numero uno  position in his folk writing sphere. There was even a documented occurrence when Dylan apparently threw Ochs out of a limousine. 

Some of the titles of Phil Ochs albums are worth buying just for their title : All the news thats fit to sing,  I Ain't marching anymore, Rehearsals for Retirement.

Sadly PO took his own life in 1975.

Of the two versions, I have to go for the original, what's your favourite?
