Robbie Nevil - C'est La Vie

Saturday Night Jukebox....
Everyone's got a guilty pleasure
My hair is nice....That's right!

Robbie Nevil - 'C'est La Vie' (1986)

Today, 23rd May 2015, will be 14 years since London Scouser and I started officially stepping out. After months of him begging me to go out with him and me saying no but still spending an awful lot of time with him (who was I trying to kid?), I gave in to his nerdish charm.

It was a lovely sunny day, LS suggested we take a drive to Runnymeade and talk a walk by the river. It was so picturesque and none of my previous boyfriends had ever taken me on a date, let alone a romantic one! I was softening....

We walked up to the Harvester restaurant there and whilst we were waiting to be served, I heard music playing from the bar. London Scouser had heard it too and we both started singing the words "C'est la vie, c'est la vie, that's just the way it goes...." It was from one of my favourite albums, Now 9!! We looked at each other and said the next line at the same time, he said "That's life!" and I said what I thought the words were, "That's right!" I always thought of myself as the lyric guru! Oops, I made a boo boo there, he was laughing his head off! I never really put two and two together to work out what it was, seems a bit obvious now, duh! Needless to say, I have never lived it down.

Knowing how well he knew Now 9 must have been the clincher because later that evening after I had dropped him off to play footy with Flycasual, we were speaking on MSN messenger. He tried his luck again probably thinking he had wangled it with such a lovely day, and this time I said yes. We have been together ever since and I know now there is no one better suited for me. Even nerds can get the girl!

Uh, can you pass me a cushion please?

Demis Roussos - Forever And Ever

Saturday Night Jukebox....
Everyone's got a guilty pleasure

R.I.P Demis

Demis Roussos - 'Forever And Ever' (1976)

How very strange. I was thinking about doing this post for a while when I heard the news that the big hunk of love Demis Roussos passed away on 25th January this year at the pretty young age of 68. I think its kind of nice that he's been on my mind for a little while, so of course I have to show appreciation in the form of sharing this timeless 70's cheese fest, Forever And Ever.

I first heard about Demis from the fantastic cringey Mike Leigh comedy, Abigail's Party. This classic is very dear to my heart as I played the part of Beverly for my Drama GCSE and got a whopping A* for the performance. I have seen the stage play 3 times portrayed by different actors and I never get bored of it! "Do you think he's sexy Ange?"

The reason he popped into my head recently was that London Scouser and I decided to take our "Babymoon" in Rhodes in October. The last of those sorts of holidays where we are all alone in peace and quiet, I'm told. The only difference was no booze for me! Apart from the obvious Greek theme of the artist, I thought it appropriate as I would probably be dressing much like Demis in the coming months. Loose fitting kaftans or "moomoos" as I like to call them would be ideal maternity wear, although I am still yet to come across some of the wild paisley patterns sported by the man himself!

So I'd like to say Efharisto to Demis for this guilty pleasure!

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Lionel Richie - 'All Night Long'

Lionel Richie - 'All Night Long' (1983)

There are some songs that I loved growing up in the 80's and then I forget all about them until I hear them again. This track from Lionel is a glorious camp number with a suitably cringey video. It never fails to make me smile and sing a long, especially to the African bit!

About 8 years ago I worked in a massive cargo warehouse at Heathrow on the reception to begin with, then got promoted to Exports. I used to have to prepare the airway bills and choose what shipments were built on what pallets. I was still totally new to the environment and although I was a little intimidated by the loud, brusque and down right filthy warehouse guys, I had to be balshy and give back what innuendos and friendly banter I received.

Pass me my plantain, I feel a song coming on!
On one night shift, I ventured out into the warehouse to check some dangerous cargo and Radio Jackie or Heart FM was blasting All Night Long over the speakers. I couldn't see anyone around so carried on about my business, until some movement caught my eye. In the import freight area where the guys were breaking down pallets of tropical fruit and veg, I could see one of the younger warehouse guys prancing around with his shorts pulled right up his bum like little hot pants, miming into either an aubergine or plantain I forget what. All the other guys were laughing at this performance but he had his back to me, so I thought I would milk this opportunity! I creeped closer and then stood behind him waiting for him to notice. With the roar of laughter from his colleagues increasing, it didn't take long for him to work out not only that someone was watching, but it was a WOMAN! One nil to me I'm proud to say. Classic extreme embarrassment face mid dance!

The Beach Boys - 'Sloop John B'

Saturday Night Jukebox....
Everyone has a guilty pleasure

The Welsh Contingent

The Beach Boys - 'Sloop John B' (1966)

Part 2.....

The storm soon subsided and we were again on our way, but this guy was relentless. The fishermen on board caught a load of live lobsters and had put them into barrels on board. This guy pulled one out of the barrel by it's antennae and started trying to chase the squeamish women around, shoving it in their faces. It was then I noticed the Welsh contingent. Surely I'd seen their flags earlier? A couple of the guys were noticeably scowling but did nothing...yet.

In the meantime, we had a little bit of reprise in the form of stopping at a small deserted island. Pure white sand, beautiful green palm trees swaying in the now calm wind. Everyone piled into the water and oooeh and aaaahed about the picturesque beach whilst practically fighting to get a space. It wasn't even five minutes when all you could hear was shrieking and saw holiday makers scattering the beach in panic! The rain storm had awoken a sleeping giant on the island.....a huge swarm of mosquitoes! We all ran as fast as we could back to the boat. I never pictured paradise full of mossies!!

On approach of the dock, the second German guy in the group was staggering along and didn't gauge where the toilet door was, bearing in mind on the catamaran it's on the floor! He fell so awkwardly through it with legs sticking up in the air, we thought he'd broken a few bones!

Everyone got off the boat with this German guy and his mates still singing and shouting their heads off and walked to the coach. I was already inside looking down in perfect timing to see one of the welsh lads punch him square in the nose and shout, 'your walking home boyo!' Everyone on the bus cheered! We didn't see any of these German guys again for the rest of the holiday, until we were on our flight home. The main guy sat a couple rows in front of us very subdued and very quiet!

The Doors - 'Riders On The Storm'

Saturday Night Jukebox....
Everyone has a guilty pleasure

Cuba Libres all round!!

The Doors - 'Riders On The Storm' (1971)

Part 1...

Old Ma, Old Pa and I went to Cuba on our first real holiday after moving back from Saudi. I remember it so well, it was my first experience of an all inclusive. I was just 16 but no one ever questioned my age when I ordered the drinks. Cuba is a fantastic place, one I'd love to visit again. Havana was full of old school charm and real life. The beach in Varadero was probably one of the most picturesque I've seen, powder white sand and beautiful cool turquoise water. As we all love being on the water, we decided on a Jolly Roger catamaran tour, which is pretty much a booze cruise with other holiday makers but it ticked all the boxes for us! When you bought that, you got the sunset cruise free which could be taken at a later date. We enjoyed the day tour but were looking forward to the next instalment. When we arrived there were already a few revellers on the boat, who had decided to take their freebie immediately after the day cruise. Wow, they're hard core I thought! We soon worked out they were 3 German blokes and saw that they had a couple of empty rum bottles rolling around them. Hmm I smell trouble.....

The tour began and we were soon enjoying the spray on our faces and a few Cuba libres. Suddenly the sky went dark and it became dramatically cold. The waves turned rough and the heavens opened! We had sailed into one of the daily thunderstorms we encountered there! The group of holiday makers ran undercover and were all huddled under the only shelter available in the middle of the boat and reminded me of a busy hen coup. Old pa and I remained where we were, unperturbed by the dramatic change in weather. The skipper managed to guide us into a sheltered bay in between a couple of small deserted islands where we waited for the swell and enormous thunder claps to subside. In the meantime, one of the 3 drunken Germans was just getting into his stride and stood at the highest point he could clamber up to, and shouted as loud as he could: 'I've seen the lightning of the world!' and 'I am Jesus Christ'. It was all very theatrical with the storm above us. He had been getting into everyone's faces during the trip, barging into a large elderly lady and even old pa at one point. The group were almost at breaking point. I remember now I thought the guy looked like the lead singer from Wheatus with his odd specs.

Stay tuned for Part 2 next week....

The Bravery - 'An Honest Mistake'

Saturday Night Jukebox.....
Everyone has a guilty pleasure

step on my blue silk pjs

You know how it is on your first night on holiday, its customary to have a few 'welcome' drinks in your resort. The was the case when London Scouser and I went to Dominican Republic with Old Pa and Old Ma. After the long flight with many drinks LS retired early to our room whilst we continued to sample the cocktails in the lobby.

After the bar was closing and we were all the worse for wear, we walked back to our apartment block. All the resort's blocks looked identical and I was adamant I knew which one was ours. The three of us walked up the stairs and I put my key card in and tried the handle. Nothing. I tried again and still nothing. Old pa had a go too and still no light came on. Old ma pushed us aside and said 'Right, let me try' probably thinking that we were too drunk and useless to manage the simple task of opening the door. In the meantime, Old Pa and I started to knock on the door shouting for LS to wake up, thinking he was comatose in a drunken stupor. At that point, the door opened and a visibly shaken man in blue silk pyjamas stood there. Needless to say we were horrified and extremely apologetic! Old Pa also promised to 'buy' him a drink obviously not remembering it was an all inclusive resort! The room we had been attempting to enter was the exactly the same position but one block before ours. The poor man and his wife were probably huddled in bed in fear that someone was trying to enter their room in the middle of the night! It must have taken real courage to open that door and I don't know who was more shocked, us or him! We couldn't stop laughing about it for the whole holiday and joked that the guy must have dressed especially in his silk PJs to confront us!

Yes, can I help you?

This debut track by The Bravery was in my Top 3 of 2005 and their self titled first album was full of great singles. Sadly I think the band have split up as they no longer have an official website as of 2012. Here's a fun fact: The lead singer Sam Endicott Co-wrote 3 songs for Shakira including 'She Wolf'. Awoooooooooo!

John Paul Young - 'Love Is In The Air'

Saturday Night Jukebox.....
Everyone has a guilty pleasure

John Paul Young - 'Love Is In The Air' (1977)

I really can't help myself with this one. I now realise not only does music bring me amazing pleasure but dance does too! I wish I could say it was my dancing but, no, its watching other people dance. My favourites are Latin American and B-Boy dancing but really anything will do. I'm an avid watcher of 'Strictly' and was catching up the other day. I knew the crew were due to do their bit at Blackpool so was looking forward to a fun number or two. Well, I watched the opening number and I was shocked at the emotion that came flooding in! Am I getting old? First of all there were the dancers and the celebrities who showed their face, then the little kiddies who looked so professional. Then the old folks who probably dance there every week (and have been for years). Something twigged in me and I felt a tear, such tradition! I almost felt like I did during the London Olympic Opening Ceremony! I can't explain why but it was just seeing the old folks with the kids all doing something beautiful and timeless that got me....shucks.

Not only is this song associated with a really fab, fantastic, feel good Aussie take on the Dirty Dancing film, but whenever I hear it I, get transported to a little taverna call Duke's Bar in Cyprus, where I learned what's what on my first holiday away from home. On karaoke night, this song would be dusted off, again and again, by an ol' geezer who insisted we call him....Jorge. He was brilliant, bless him, but he couldn't speak any English except the words of the song which were perfect!

The film Strictly Ballroom is a classic, I love the cheesy video that was made to accompany the film in 1992. I'm guessing that all blokes are gonna hate this one! Hard core fans, check out what I'm taking about below!

Gary Numan - 'Cars'

Saturday Night Jukebox.....
Everyone has a guilty pleasure

My face when I saw Jazzman out the window

Gary Numan - 'Cars' (1979)
I parked my baby next to an older green beetle I had been admiring for months in the college car park and strutted to my art lessons like a proud peacock. I couldn't wait until my free periods to cruise around Twickenham high street with my friends. I got the great comments I was after about my car tape too, could it get any better?
I had already arranged to pick up 2 friends after college and go to the pub. I couldn't wait to say, 'Just a diet coke for me, I'M driving!' We decided on the Wetherspoons in Hounslow, only the best for us students. With my steed safely parked at the Gala Bingo next door, we went in and were having a whale of a time until something caught my eye out the window. My friend said, 'Hey a beetle like yours!' and I realised in a terror I hope never to relive again, It was my beloved beetle on the back of a tow truck being dragged away at full speed! 'Thats my f@*king car!!!' We all ran out of the pub and as much as I wanted to chase it down the road at full pelt, I had to accept it was gone and do the only thing I could, reluctantly call Old pa. Feeling like Cameron from Ferris Bueller after the Ferrari crashed out the window, I punched in the number. Oh God, the dream was well and truly over, I felt sick. After a seriously loud ear bashing, Old pa calmed down and realised it was no fault of my own that I wasn't roadwise. I was able to extract a mobile number for the tow company from the minuscule, filthy sign that was much below eye level at the gala car park and give it to old pa. Old Ma called back saying she had caught the guy and he reluctantly agreed to hang around at a petrol garage to let us pick the car up for a whopping £280! It was either that or pick it up from a lot in Iver the next morning.

How was I to know?!
Oh boy was I quiet on the way home feeling very sorry for myself. Needless to say, the following day I decided to give Jazzman the day off after his traumatic experience and went out to the pub with my pals. Now that we had all slept on it, Old pa began to see the funny side and my friends couldn't stop ribbing me about it. There was a DJ on at the pub and in between songs I heard him make an announcement. 'This song is dedicated to a girl who managed to get her car towed away on her first day of driving it!' I went redder than Jazzman when this track came on, thanks a lot!!

The Bluetones - 'Autophilia'

Saturday Night Jukebox...
Everyone has a guilty pleasure
Has anyone seen my Chas and Dave tape?

The Bluetones got it right about my first car.....

The Bluetones - 'Autophilia (or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love My Car)' (2000)

Part 1

Does everyone remember their first car? I used to roll my eyes when my mum used to get all excited when a 2CV rolled by ranting about her first car but now I'm the same. It wasn't until my 18th birthday that I fancied taking to the roads myself and I got driving lessons for it. My mum came home one day and said she drove past the perfect car for me, a 1974 VW beetle. I was infatuated with them from a young age with their cute and friendly bug shape, so lifelike I thought! We went down to take a look and Cupid struck. I was in love! It was bright red, lowered, with fat with a 'PH' wheels, massive chrome bumpers and spoiler. I even loved the cheesy stickers of the word 'Jazz' and a couple of saxophones on the side a previous owner had lovingly placed on. It came complete with black furry dice and a California licence plate! If that wasn't enough, after a test drive the sound was like 100 Harley's cruising down 66, loud and proud, I had to have it! It was a beautiful beast but looks were deceiving, it needed urgent welding surgery to pass it's mot, luckily 'Ginger Barry' down the road was happy to oblige in return for a pint or 2 down the local. I imagined Luke Skywalker the first time he set eyes on the Millennium Falcon in his screechy tone, saying 'what a piece of junk!' and me answering with Han Solo's defensive manor 'She may not look like much kid, but she's got it where it counts!'

Almost as sexy as my Jazzman...
Needless to say, with my incentive now parked on the drive at home, I passed my test first time and was eager to pop my driving cherry to college the following week. I had already painstakingly created a masterpiece for my first car tape knowing full well I would always have a full house being the first of my group to have a car. I also decided to call my car Jazzman, which he was known to all and I spoke to him like he was my best pal. I remember getting behind the wheel of Jazzman for the first time, adjusting the mirror and seat, ejecting the Chas and Dave greatest hits tape that was already in the cassette player from when we bought it and excitedly putting in my own mega mix. I was not a bit nervous, driving was not like the panicky, sweaty driving lessons but I felt free and blissfully independent! Off I went and how the people stared as I drove by! You could hear me coming a mile away and I was now part of an elite club. Fellow beetle owners would knowingly wave and nod as we passed each other on the road. I had arrived!

Come back next week for Part 2..........

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - 1 Giant Leap - 'The Way You Dream'

1 Giant Leap - ''The Way You Dream' (2002)

I'm looking forward to swanning off to my parent's lovely retirentment villa in Spain very soon. One of the things I used to love doing was catching one of the ferry boats to "Isle Tabarca" which was supposedly a marine nature reserve about 40 minutes from the coast of Torreveija. Once on the island, Flycasual, London Scouser and I were determined to investigate the small village there. We managed to buy masks and snorkels from a shop that also sold masses of shells and shark mouths (marine reserve indeed!) and we decided to hire a pedalo. After struggling to push the vessel over the pebbly beach we were soon laughing upon the waves and came quite near a huge rock where Fly and I decided would be a good area to snorkle, and right we were! Masses of big fish which we weren't expecting! They were very unassuming and went about their daily jobs which I think just consisted of crunching up some coral every now and then. After I'd got myself aboard our pedalo, Flycasual said, "Go down the slide!" and I thought, what a delightful idea, it'll be like being a kid again! Until I actually went down it and it dried before I got to the bottom! It was a very painful screech to a halt halfway down and my thighs haven't forgotten it since!!

Can I buy a bear skin hat here?

This song springs to mind as I had just made my first mini disc for the trip and it was the first track I put on. 1 Giant Leap were big on my playlist for a few years after that but his track is my ultimate fave, how can you beat Michael Stipe and Asha Bhosle (A Brimfull of Asha) after all! Duo Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman were the initial artists involved and it was a project that crossed all catagories. There was also a great follow up. From what I gather, they pretty much went around the world with a lap top collecting amazing memories (Tune Doctor Style!) be it music, word and visuals.

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - The Beta Band - 'Dry the Rain'

The Beta Band - 'Dry The Rain' (1997)

I've been getting all excited about seeing Steve Mason next week and have been listening to all the Beta Band albums, King Biscuit Time, Black Affair and of course his awesome solo stuff. There is one track that I keep coming back to and don't mind playing over and over. Dry The Rain is one epic song that I think is right up there in my Top Ten, maybe in my Top Five! I don't know what it is about the song or melody but I find it sad but uplifting at the same time.

We're fully prepared to take on the hoard of Brownies
Bizarrely when I listen to it, towards the end when they go into the repeats of 'it'll be okay" etc, apart from the goosebumps, I get reminded of back when I was in the Girl Scouts (of the USA no less) when growing up in Saudi. We had an annual 'Camp Out' at what seemed like an American army base but I found out was actually a geologicial laboratory called USGS, which I remember was miles out in the desert. Bang smack in the middle of the base was a massive football field set down in a sort of dug out. There was the most beautiful freshly mowed bright green grass where we would pitch our tents. During the day, us senior girls would do artsy fartsy crafts and games which we would have to make up to entertain the Brownies for the day. I decided I would teach them how to catch grass hoppers. I was more of an outdoorsy Tom Boy back then!

In the evening, it was a good old fashion sing song around the camp fire and I remember being extremely impressed when we would do songs with a "round" in them. A round (in case you don't know and according to Wiki) is a musical composition in which two or more voices sing exactly the same melody (and may continue repeating it indefinitely), but with each voice beginning at different times so that different parts of the melody coincide in the different voices, but nevertheless fit harmoniously together.
One of the volunteers who was a music teacher would teach us how to do it and it would be a mess at first, but when it got going it was great, much like the bit at the end of Dry The Rain. The music teacher would also try and burst in with a harmony as they do. Strange what you remember!

As if you needed anymore proof this song was awesome, have a look below!

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - The Specials - 'Ghost town'

I was dispatching a normal boring Sri Lankan Airlines flight one evening years ago when I was printing off the final purser paperwork. As the first part of the printout scrolled up with the business class names on, I recognised the surname Lovejoy for 3 passengers. "Oh", I thought, "just like Tim Lovejoy" and I looked at the first name which said Timothy. Oh my god, it must be him! I used be a fan of Soccer AM by default. It was always on on a Saturday morning in our house and despite not being a particular follower of football, I still enjoyed the silliness and humour of the show led by Tim.
Can you show me to seat 1A please?

Any way I was so excited to find out he was travelling out with his twin daughters that I told anyone who would listen. At the end of the flight, a couple guys from the ramp came up to collect the push chairs etc, I thought they might get as excited as me when I told them. Instead the ramp supervisor answered, "Tim who? Never heard of him!" Whilst looking down at my computer, I launched into a big speech describing him (and mentioning I thought he was a bit of alright), saying he hosted Soccer AM and I was surprised that the ramp guys hadn't heard of him! The supervisor smirked at me and replied, "oh you mean him over there!" Tim had boarded through the gate with his daughters and was at the end of the queue of passengers now facing me at the computer. My face went extremely hot and I was horrified with embarrassment. He probably was too, after my gushing description of him!

To add insult to injury I had to go on board to the cockpit to get my load sheet signed but Tim was putting his baggage away into the overhead locker from the aisle so I had to excuse myself passed him. My face felt like it was on fire and glowing the colour of scarlet. On the way back out of the cockpit, I mumbled for him to have a good holiday and ran out!!

Didn't you know? We invented music!

You are probably wondering what The Specials have to do with Tim Lovejoy but any fan would know that when asked who his favourite band are, Tim answers "The Specials, they invented music"! I'm also a fan of The Specials and I especially love Ghost Town. I remember putting it on in the jukebox when I was 15 and my friends giving me funny looks during the "lalala" bit. Tim, this one is for you!

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - The Beatles - 'And I Love Her'

I'm a big fan of the "All Inclusive" holiday once in a while. You don't need to worry about carrying cash around and you have have everything you could ever need for a complete holiday in one place: restaurants, pools, pool bars (especially swim up ones), private beaches, evening entertainment and lots of activities. The thing is, with everyone staying in the one place, you begin to recognise poeple and even, God forbid, socialise with them! This is not usually my choice and I prefer to keep myself to myself but when London Scouser, Old Pa & Ma and I get together on holidays namely at the swim up bar, we seem to attract people. Probably because we are quite obviously enjoying ourselves drinking and taking the piss out of people amongst ourselves. We end up getting involved and get to know a handful of misfits whose real names we cant remember but are given better names.

Hey Paul, aren't those the same trunks as yours?
The last lot who we are still talking about were Scholesy (a fat but very nice northerner who we saw wearing a Scholes football shirt the first day), Previous Previous (a rather annoying woman on holiday with her new beau with a couple of kids from previous relationships) and Elvis & Elvis (an extremely odd looking couple with his and hers Elvis quiffs. I think only one was intentional though). These are people who we would never normally talk to and will never keep in touch with but keep us amused and can contribute to making a memorable holiday.

In the evenings (if you can make it that far), it is the best opportunity for people watching. This is like the cat-walk of Primark and Matalan and damn it, there is someone with the same shirt or dress as you! We sit at the main bar, watching people and discussing what they are probably like and guessing their stories. "Oh they are probably on a wife swapping holiday....that lot look like they've used their injury benefit payout on this 4 star holiday but they are the ones doing paragliding and rock climbing....look at those two, they are not even talking to each other..." I would hate to ever find out what people would be saying about us but at the same time, if it contributes to them having as good a holiday as I normally have doing it, so be it!
I reckon he's having an affair with his brother's wife....

I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles but I like a lot of their stuff and appreciate how massive an impact they made on music. Strangely this is one of my favourite tracks because it always reminds me of All Inclusive holidays. I remember the heat of the evening just after it goes dark when all the hotel ground lights ping on. I love the almost weekend buzz feeling as everyone has their shower and gets dolled up after a day in the sun. In the main bar area you either get music playing over the speakers or an inoffensive band with keyboard etc playing a handful of well known songs sang in Spanish accents. This is one of the songs I remember hearing and singing along to whilst we discussed a few chavs at the other side of the room over cocktails. God, I could do with a holiday like that now!

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Santa Esmerelda - 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood'

There has always been a fascination with Latin music for me, namely anything Spanish or Mexican sounding. I love the guitar, trumpets and flamenco clapping, I can't get enough. This song has it all and I would personally like to thank Quentin Tarrantino for bringing it to my attention on the Kill Bill soundtrack. As with all his films, the soundtrack is fabulous, scattered with a whole bunch of songs that tick the Mexican sounding box for me.

Latin Disco? So misunderstood!

I remember sitting in my mum's garden in Spain, having a glass of vino blanco, reading The Davinci Code and we were all listening to the Kill Bill soundtrack. It was a balmy evening and the music was perfect in fitting with the heat and insects buzzing around. I was starting to picture myself in Mexico for my wedding which was a year away at the time. Me in my dress, standing in one of those little white Mexican churches, looking out through the open doorway, seeing a few tumble weeds blow past and the Mariachis start up, signalling the fiesta that is about to begin! Well, that would have been different but walking down the aisle on one of the most breathtaking beaches with my toes in the warm sand with London Scouser was just as memorable! With the help of the Kill Bill double album and Calexico, I created our own wedding soundtrack with Santa Esmerelda taking pride of place! Viva Mexico!

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - BRAD - '20th Century'

Brad - '20th Century' (1993)

They say that big events in your life help you remember the music that was around at the time. 1993 had a massive event for me, one that was life changing. It was the year that Old Pa got a new job in the UK and we left Saudi Arabia. It was the only life I knew and I've missed it ever since. But if I was ever on Mastermind, I would ace being quizzed on songs released in 1993!

This epic song from Brad, although it was a minor hit in the UK was big for me. It surrounded the last few days being in Saudi packing all my childhood things, as it was on a mix tape Flycasual had at the time. One of the last days we spent in Jeddah, Flycasual took me along with his friends to an evening exploring in the city. I had never seen the real Jeddah, I was always in the safety and familiarity of the compound we lived on. I remember it was dimly lit, bustling with people everywhere shouting random stuff in Arabic in the market place. I was mesmerised by the razzmatazz and felt so small compared to everyone else. We hopped on a packed, dingy public bus and Flycasual turned to me whilst I was squashed up against all the other passengers, "You're not going to forget this moment". I was 11 years old then and not only remember that moment but that whole evening every time I hear 20th Century.

Brad actually released an album in April last year that I totally missed called United We Stand. Catch up with their movements on their site here...

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Hard-Fi - 'Living for The Weekend'

Never has a truer phrase existed than "Living for the weekend". Most of my life has been like that, through the monotony of school then getting my first full time Monday to Friday 9-5 in a courier office after finishing college. If only you could bottle that 'Friday feeling'! Hard-Fi had a belter of a first album and for me, this track stands out. I feel the need to sing it at the top of my lungs especially the excellent swearing bit. Sometimes it just needs to be said!

The Staines Massive
Even when I changed to a new cargo job at Heathrow which was 12 hour shifts doing days and nights, although it wasn't Friday I was always looking forward to, it was my days off. Driving home after that last night shift was great, I had a smile on my face. I knew that after I woke up from a few hours kip, the world was at my feet, well okay, Slough. But never the less, the time was mine and I was free from the shackles of deadlines, answering phones and to superiors! Now I'm a bit older and changed to a Flight Operations job, I still get that same smile on my face but it's normally when I'm walking into work on the last shift. I adopt the attitude, "It's my last day, throw what you can at me, bring it on!" The thing is, as luck would have it, it's usually the last shift that every thing goes wrong!

After walking in and taking a pretty gruesome handover from my colleague the other day, I got a call from Paris asking if we could accept a diversion as Bristol airport was shut due to fog. Only being new to the role, I literally had to wing it. Panic stations! Whilst that was happening, Amsterdam were getting pelted with a snow blizzard so we had a few cancellations. "Hooray!" shout the dispatchers who were allocated those flights, "Oh shit" I cry as I know they will just upgrade the aircraft size and it will come in at last knockings, where I will be fully expected to choose someone to stay (making me the bad guy) and am stuck myself being the supervisor! Despite all these horrible irregularities, in the back of my mind I hear, "The day will come to an end, and no matter what happens, you will be enjoying a nice glass of wine at home before you go to bed, waking up to three glorious days off". It may not be the weekend but the sentiment is the same: Work hard? Play Harder!!

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Pulp - 'Sunrise'

Pulp - 'Sunrise' (2001)

We are about to get battered by another wave of horrible winter misery and all I keep saying to myself is, you just have to make it to March and you've cracked it. The days are getting longer and the sunrise earlier, the sun makes things feel more bearable again!

This epic track (live on old Joolsy Boy's show in 2001) gets me every time. I always thought it perfectly personified the sunrise, slow and lazy to start with then it blasts you with phenomenal unexpected power! Goosebumps for me!

I was in Spain with London Scouser visiting Old Ma when on one of our legendary pub crawls, we got talking to a guy who thought of himself as a bit of a wide boy know it all. He was an Irish bloke and doing a touring circuit of the pubs organising jamming sessions as he played guitar (he probably jammed with Jimmy too no doubt). He really tried his utmost to wow us with anything he could: general music trivia, aircraft knowledge and anything else he may have overheard us talking about but we saw him coming a mile off. He was one of those probably used to being centre of attention but our threesome gave him a good run for his money whilst having a laugh. It was great seeing his face in shock when my little ma reeled off all the weird and wonderful aircraft types she had experience with, with totally convincing knowledge and he soon shut his gob. He took a shine to us as we weren't the usual punters you get in Spain and invited us to watch him jam in a pub by the sea front we'd never been to called Dirty Nellies. Fuelled with many a drink, we agreed to go, stupidly not expecting to feel the wrath of hangover the next morning.

Later on we sort of recovered and ma said we'll just have a little scout around to look for this pub in the car. I vividly remember being in the back seat of my mum's convertible mini, with the top down, cruising the coastal road and this song came up on our holiday playlist. It was truly memorable, the sun on my face, the wind messing my hair up and me looking out to the great blue yonder. We never did find the pub but the drive was unforgettable because of this track. Never saw that bloke again either!

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Temple Of The Dog - 'All Night Thing'

Temple Of The Dog - 'All Night Thing' (1991)

This is a lot slower and more subdued then I normally feature on SNJ but it has to be one of my all time favourite songs sang by my, without a doubt, all time favourite rock voice, Chris Cornell. There is something about his voice that burrows deep within my soul. I mentioned a long while back that the album Temple Of The Dog (check my previous post here) would make ladies go weak at the knees at parts. Well, I think I had this song in mind when I said that. The version featured in the video is an acoustic version that Chris did in recent years, but this is the sort of song you need to hear naked and sparse (musically!).

Sorry love, can't talk, I've got to get up for my early at LHR

I told a friend of mine she looked knackered at work the other day on my early shift. She told me she didn't have a wink of sleep but she had a smile on her face. After questioning her, she told me she had stayed up all night 'talking' with a guy she had fancied for ages but only just started seeing. Despite being sleep depraved, she was walking on air! She had made a serious emotional connection and it was an All Night Thing! It made me think back to times when I had stayed up all night talking, not about anything in particular either, it was just free flow. Or even when I wake up in the middle of the night and can hear LS stirring (or snoring), an impromptu conversation sometimes can enjoyably last a few hours (providing no one is on an early shift!). It is pretty powerful knowing you are the only 2 people alive that know what was exchanged at the time. This song perfectly communicates the beauty of being just the two of you, alone in the dark and 'no one else can make it end'. Perfect.

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - Warren G & Nate Dogg - 'Regulate'

Warren G & Nate Dogg - 'Regulate' (1994)

Any person growing up through the nineties will probably love this song as much as I do. It's one of those that everyone knew the lyrics and used to listen to on their walkmans, sharing the earphones in the playing fields during lunch. I remember doing a whole routine to a few of my girlfriends wearing my tie around my head in true Tupac Shakur style.

Thank God it's Saturday
Being very much into the "crime drama" film genre growing up too, I loved any films featuring homeboys and rappers such as Boyz N the Hood, New Jack City, Juice and Friday. Flycasual knew this and took advantage of me one day saying he had a great new film that was amazing and I'd love it, called Above The Rim which featured the afore mentioned Tupac. I remember watching it, loving it and Regulate was on its soundtrack, bonus!

a 'swish' film
The next day, a smirking Flycasual came back to me asking 'so how was the film? I bet it was crap!' I explained it was excellent and up there with the best of them, but hang on hadn't he seen it?  The cheeky bugger wanted me to screen it first to see if it was worth him watching it!

RIP, but it did look better with a St. Mark's tie

SATURDAY NIGHT JUKEBOX! - The Charlatans - 'Then'

The Charlatans - 'Then' (1990)

It was Reading Festival '99 and as is customary with music festivals we had spent most of the day drinking warm cider and catching the bands that we loved. As the day drew to a close, I really wanted to see The Charlatans who were headlining the main stage. My best friend at the time looked like she had had more than her fill of booze when I suggested we head over to see the final band of the night. I was practically holding her up and she begged me to take her back to our tent or 'HQ' as we affectionately called it. Our other friends had already retired for a night cap but I was adamant I was going to see them perform my favourite track of theirs. I promised her that as soon as they played Then, I would escort her back. Selfishly I was really enjoying the gig, they played all their hits whilst she was swaying and half stumbling besides me. Again she pleaded, Please lets go back, I fell like sh*t! I said, they should be playing it soon, its their best song after all. After watching the whole set, the band walked off. Surely they will play it for their encore? They came back and thrashed out a couple more corkers, every one was a winner. I waited patiently for the intro to start, but it never came! I was robbed! My mate was pretty pissed off that I had forced her to stay the entire gig for a song that never came! Gutted!

Wake up, The Charlatans are on mate!

The Charlatans and especially Then, reminds me so much of growing up in Saudi and fond memories of sitting with my parents whilst they were having drinks in our home made bar. I put it on our recent holiday playlist and it was met with approving comments. A classic of all classics and I still think its a fantastic song, worthy of playing as their last encore, even if the band didn't on the night!

We're so pretty, oh Vanity!
