DC Basehead - 'Not Over You' (1992)

I love this track with it's looping scratch and piano and Micheal Ivey's laboured delivery adding to the smokey atmosphere. The sound of a broken man, there's a real feel of resignation here, a reluctance to move on or be helped as our protagonist is weighed under his lovesick stupour.

Because of the unique nature of the song, I used to view it as a bit of a novelty record blissfully ignorant to it's real meaning. I would think.... 'Ah bless him, he must be upset...he sounds like he's in such a bad mood. It can't be that bad'! Little did I know a few years down the line, the track would take extra significance as I would get 'kicked in the ass by love' myself and would fully understand why he sounded so bloody miserable!

'Not Over You' is taken from DC Basehead's debut album Play With Toys and you'll be pleased to know that he is no longer gutted and has re-released his debut to coincide with it's 20th anniversary.

What are dads all about?

I kind of like to be compared to a Giant Redwood Tree that is strong and can give protection especially in times of thunder. This is one of my favourite Van tunes, it has a nice simple melody and message and Van's voice is still at its majestic best. It of course is one of the best dad and son songs there is. It is from the album St Dominic's Preview.

The next one on the same theme comes from an excellent album by Richard Harris called My Boy he was still at this time collaborating with one of my favourite song writers Jim Webb. The album is a concept album about a relationship from the beginning until the breakup and of course how it affects his boy. Take my word, Jim Webb knows how to write a break up song and some of his best you will probably know, Do What You Gotta Do, A Tramp Shining and MacArthur Park. This version by RH always brings a tear to my eye.

Fiona Apple - Parting Gift (2005)

When Fiona Apple came out with Extraordinary Machine in 2005, it had been a long, complicated, six-year wait for her fans. The album was recorded, then mixed, then shelved, then recorded again, then mixed again, then leaked on the internet, and then finally released for real. Although the record was not Fiona's biggest commercial success, it did get a lot of critical attention, and for those who were waiting all those years, it was heaven sent.There was one song that was on the official release that hadn't been on the Jon Brion-produced leak - 'Parting Gift'. It was a back-to-basics kind of song, just Fiona and her piano, and the lyrics were almost painfully clever.

To this day, it's still my favourite song on the album, and even though it's basically a song about the breakup of a relationship that ended badly, somehow it's not a sad song, and there's even a hint of nostalgia tinged with hope in there.Fiona has always been known for being a little out-there with her songwriting, and this song is no exception, but the rawness of it is captivating, and the melody is catchy enough that you'll find yourself singing along the second time through... and the third time, and the fourth time, and so forth.

This is Soul on a pole!! A superb, bitter sweet, soulful Hip Hop record with a wonderful Curtis Mayfield sample ('I Loved and I Lost' by the Impressions). A track in which he pours his heart out on, possibly over the breakup of his relationship with blue ribbon tennis champ, Serena Williams. For me, it's the standout track from Common's 9th album, 'The Dreamer, The Believer', a bit hit and miss but with Common you're always guaranteed an ace!

That's a pretty good breakup line in anyone's book. She's done the business, big time! on that poor fellow!,

I can't really explain why I did not get into Nick Cave until quite later in his career, he has got all the dark ingredients which are right up my street. When I first heard this track, I was hooked, that was it, I had to catch up with all his back catalogue. I have remained with him ever since and will always get a new Cave album on its release.

I had a part time job that only lasted about a month. It was delivering Customers cars to and from  Heathrow Airport. The only good thing I can say about it was, that I had the experience of driving some superb  motors. I always remember driving a top of the range BMW which was my first encounter with an automatic car, it was a fabulous experience, the power, the smoothness. I switched on the radio and there it was, 'Bromton Oratory' by Nick Cave. I now always associate BMW's with Nick Cave. (music and associations again!)

It was a depressing  journey home in my 10 year old Nissan Sunny.

Enough of all this Valentines schmuck! how do you follow a Valentines extravaganza?, well with the best BREAK UP song ever composed in my opinion. 'No regrets' by Tom Rush. It is very simply written but hits you like a hammer, You can feel the despair, the grief, the isolation, every single word is exactly how it is. This is what break up is all about, It is going to be a long road to recovery for poor old Tom. Some of the lines are so painful it hurts no matter how many times you hear them,  'I've got nothing new to show to you'  total resignation to the realisation that it is finally over. I have often brought this one out in times of need.

Oh I do love these break up songs.

Regrets I have a few

But why has she left you in the first place, before you wallow further in your self pity? Were you too long on the PC?  Football, pub & mates came first? Did you take her too much for granted? You wouldn't fart in front of a new girlfriend would you? Think about it and learn from it.

I found this in a bargain bucket outside an Indian convenience store I always had a browse every time I passed. I remember it so well, I also got 'Still the Same' by Bob Segar on the same day, another great one. Twenty pence each and no scratches. What a bargain!. 

I was desperate to find it on CD and found a Tom Rush 'Best of' but it was a big band version and had not the same impact. (file job). I finally found it on the the Soundtrack to the 'The Wonder Boys' check that out, It is one of the best Soundtrack Albums I have heard.

Also check out the Walker Brothers version it is also pretty good.

Etta James today (20-01-2012) sadly passed away after a battle with Leukemia and this is probably her most famous song. 

There are lots of 'sad' songs out there, but this one can really rip your heart out!

It was sung with so much heartfelt soul that lots of people have tried to cover it, but no one has come close.

Thursday I'm in Love..a chance for me to share some of my favourite tunes.

Nirvana - 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?' (1993)

It's only appropriate to do a Nirvana post for the 20th anniversary release of the groundbreaking Nevermind (where did that time go). There are plenty of memorable moments to choose from, turning the volume up to 11 for 'Teen Spirit' at house parties and their legendary rendition of that song on Top of the Pops but I've gone for my personal favourite so bear with me.

This is a haunting song taken from Nirvana's live and unplugged album, unaware that it was originally an old blues song by Leadbelly. Even though the blues legend sounds really gutted, Kurt Cobain's rendition feels more heartfelt. It starts off calmly, though you can start to hear him spitting into the mic before the song ends in an explosion of raw emotion. Brutal.

I was fortunate enough to experience this very scenario a long while back as my girlfriend at the time unexpectedly failed to turn up at a family BBQ. Pretty sure it wasn't anything to do with the promise of my mexican three bean salad, I suspected foul play. Instead of contemplating the impending demise of my relationship, I thought it a brilliant opportunity to use this song in context and play it too her. That'll make her feel guilty when she eventually comes back to explain, I thought. It didn't work as I never got the chance, essential part of ones musical education I say.

Oh go on then....here's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' live on Top of the Pops back in 1991, check out the charts!!! I also bet the TOTP producers were in a bit of a mild panic when Kurt and gang got going.

If it is pain you're after, if it is emotion, if it is one of the best 'rock' vocal performances of all time, then search no further...you have found it. Not only this track but the whole of the 'Astral Weeks.' It is a stunning album and it is difficult to define how to categorise it, there are jazz elements, rock, folk. It is a sound that will never date, never die.

I had just broken up with a girl when I first heard the album and this helped with the loss and despair, or maybe rubbed my nose firmly 'in it!'...I am sure I listened to it almost every day for a year and is probably my most played album.

There is a part midway through the song where Van's voice just breaks with shear pain and it has been compared to the nearest thing in music to the 'primal scream'. I have never heard better. Have you ?

There are just some brilliant tracks, 'Madam George',  'Sweet Thing', the title track and if you survive 'Cyprus Avenue' without a tear or don't become an emotional wreck....then you got no 'soul' man. It is worth persevering with this, because if it 'hits' then you will have a friend for life. Van's follow up album 'Moondance' is equally good, in the same way as 'Blonde on Blonde' is to 'Highway 61 revisited' ....no mean praise.

It's 1991, It's hot, it's humid, we're in a bunker somewhere in Khe Sanh, Nam... Actually I exaggerate, it was probably grey and wet and in quite a nice two bedroom flat in Farnham Royal, Berkshire where at 17, my buddy Wesley and I lived together. Our parents were still in Saudi Arabia and I guess they reluctantly shacked us up due to schooling issues.

This is a fabulous scene, soldiers showing camaraderie in times of adversity, in what must have been hellish conditions (despite the fairy light). A bit like us then but to a much lesser extent. Our parents were a phone call away for an immediate 'medevac' but failure wasn't an option and we had to complete our tour (term). However it did feel like we were holed up deep behind enemy lines as we battled the culture shock we had moving back from Saudi Arabia after 10 years. Like proper weirdos, we'd lose ourselves in music and movies, sometimes re-enacting scenes, of which Platoon was our favourite. What a great movie and soundtrack!

After a long week at the front (school) we'd come home on Friday for some serious R+R. We'd throw on Platoon on the VCR, use our ties as head bands, drink copious amounts of Bud and smoke a joint, purely for artistic license of course (besides mum and dad, I didn't inhale) and looked forward to hearing Smokey as we re-created this scene later in the evening. Funny times.

As for the song, well nothing needs to be said, oldie, breakup, classic it's got it all and it doesn't get much better than this. It definitely helped make the worm turn for us.

This fantastic, underrated track is so good that a health warning should be issued with it - "Do not listen to after a breakup as it will quite possibly send you over the edge", and could quite easily be the musical version of 'Marley & Me' - a guaranteed lip warbler.

It features on 2005's double album 'Cold Roses' which was the start of a very productive year - he also released Jacksonville City Nights & 29 - and I admit, it gets me every time.

Ryan's currently on a European acoustic tour and has been recording a new album with legendary Led Zepplin producer Glyn Jones, after a long musical hiatus in which he's written a couple of books, married Mandy Moore, and got off the demon drugs!  I'm looking forward to hearing his new stuff!

I've been mulling over which Ryan Adams song to add to the "Breakup" posts - there is so many I can choose from!!! “Come pick me up” features on his solo debut “Heartbreaker” and the album is inspired by a breakup which he recorded in 14 days. When you first hear the song you laugh at the chorus - "Come pick me, take me out, Fk me up, steal my records, screw all my friends, they're all full of sh*t, with a smile on your face....I wish you would.” - listen a couple more times, then you’ll soon realise that you don’t want to go through a breakup like this one!

No need for much explanation with this one, listen and the tears will flow....this is a live version, but still very good.
I first heard this one from Stan, a guy I shared with way back. I thought she was the one for Stan but that wheel took a wrong turn and left Stan mending a broken heart. My Wife always compares love to be like a vase, if there is a Crack, then it will never be the same again. I'm of the Ming variety by the way.
Another reason for this choice is that Kate passed away recently. By the way her son is Rufus Wainwright.

We have all got out breakup songs but the first time I heard this, I knew I had to break up. Because this must be what it would be like, this is sheer pain and resignation...similar to Ray Charles ..'I cant stop loving You', That girl must have done the dirty and probably with his best friend but he still loves her (for ever)...'get a life mate'! We are stronger now but that pain still jags deep...'I loved you better than you own kin' ..'It's my own fault what happes to my heart.'....wheeUhh!
