GeekBeats - 'Competition'

Funny to think that the guy at work who drives the tank like vehicles hauling the aircrafts (the exact same one, albeit adapted, in the movie Aliens that the Marines take a spin in) was making laid back and soulful Hip Hop beats the last 16 years. Onerrea Velox aka 'GeekBeats', has finally 'come out' of the musical closest and released two self produced EP's on Soundcloud (a couple of his buddies help out on the mic on a few tracks), which I seriously recommend you have a listen too. Perhaps a little raw in places but the talent is there and a must for fans of J Dilla or Pete Rock, just two artists that came to mind when I first heard his material. Or if you're, like me, a sucker for a good beat to bob your head to. Big ting awaits....

- What music are you listening to at the moment?

Amy Winehouse (1 of my favorites), Dangelo The Internet, Joey Bada$$ and A Tribe Called Quest.

- What album could you not live without?

Dwele- Some Kinda

- Who would you like to work with?

Kid Astro, Elzhi, Joey Bada$$, Erykah Badu and Marsha Ambrose to say the least.

- What's your favourite place on earth and why?

Nan's house with all the family and food. This is where my music days started as a kid. Music plays non stop from Soca to Lovers Rock to Hip Hop and Soul. Dad used to be a "Sound Boy DJ" playing Reggae, Dub and Lovers Rock back In the day. Mum was into preforming arts. My 2 aunts used to sing in groups. 1 uncle used to sing and the other uncle a sax player in a group. So you could say music is in my family genes!

- First record bought?

Black Street- No Diggity

Vinyl

- If you had to cover a song, what would you choose?

Erykah Badu - Your Funeral

- Baba Ganoush or Houmous?

Houmous, as I've never tried Baba Ganoush. Something to add to my taste list though.

R.I.P. Phil Everley 1939-2014

The Brothers Everly

Growing up in the 50's and 60's it would be hard not have heard the the fabulous Everly Brothers. At one time they were my favourite group and Cathy's Clown was my favourite song for a very long time.

They had a string of great songs which still pass the test of time. I bet all you 'young guns' out there are aware of many of their hits like, Cathy's Clown, The Price of Love, Wake up little Suzie, Crying in the Rain, Love Hurts, they go on and on.

Phil may have passed away but he will always be remembered.

Bob himself recognised the major influence they had.

Here are 2 Dylan covers they released in the 80's. The first is a brilliant take of Abandoned Love and is taken from the album Born Yesterday (1985). The second cover is Lay Lady Lay and is from the album EB 84 (1984)

30 Second Interview Winterhours

Winterhours @ The Boileroom, Guildford April 20th 2012

Fellow Blogger, Sfw devised a set of short questions to ask, should we find ourselves in the position to chat to a band or artist, a good idea...much better than throwing a pair of pants on stage or shouting out I love you!

On Friday 20th April, Shell Hunter, London Scouser and I had the pleasure to see our band of the moment, Clock Opera, at the Boileroom in Guildford, supported by Winterhours and Mr Fogg. The intimate venue, passionate crowd and Red Stripe all adding to the atmosphere in what was a memorable night. We were pleasantly surprised by a powerful live performance from Winchester four piece, Winterhours, with song 'The Ghost' a particular highlight. I felt they had a an old school 70's rock feel to their playing style but mixed in with a myriad of modern sounds such as Bon Iver, Kings of Leon and Pearl Jam (all good in my book). A performance which prompted us to buy their CD single and firmly establish themselves on our radar....(don't you love it when this happens?)

Winterhours were also kind enough to allow me the time to 'interview' them whilst they were milling around having a post gig pint. I hastily wrote the answers on the back of their CD so please excuse any inaccuracies. Thanks guys!

1) What music are you listening to at the moment:-
My Morning Jacket - Circuital
Wild Beasts - Smother
and pretty much anything by Pearl Jam

2) What album could you not live without?
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

3) Who would you most like to work with?
Alison Kraus, Pearl Jam

4) What's your favourite place on earth and why?
Tarifa, Spain

(I hope I heard correctly. Though I forgot to ask why but do I really need to? Having been to Andalusia, I'd say sun, sea, surf, wine, food, scenery, music are all good enough reasons....)

5) Crisps or chocolate?
Crisps, all answered correctly even getting a bonus point for choosing Salt n' Vinegar

6) Small club or arena?
Obviously it would be amazing to play in an arena to all your fans and perhaps an obvious way to measure success but playing in a smaller venue is a lot more intimate, something which is lost in a larger venue.

7) CD or download?
CD, to have and to hold and to even smell. Music is far more tangible in this way and the artwork is also appreciated which would be otherwise non existent as a download.

8) If you had to cover a song, what would you choose?
Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen. Which I believe they have already recorded, we'll look forward to hearing that.....
