First archaeologists discover a new kind of Titanosaurus in Argentina and now Jurassic 5 unearth a new gem in the White Stripes sampling (My Doorbell), 'The Way We Do It'. Produced by the late Heavy D, it's the first of 4 brand new tracks since they got back together and also it's the self proclaimed old schooler's first in 6 years, welcome back I say. And it's like they never left, 'The Way We Do It' has all the hallmarks in the making of J5 classic, witty rhymes, clever interplay and of course that old skool flavour which is always popular around these parts. Catch them on their reunion tour this year by visiting their website for dates.

Apologies to Geologist/Archaeologists the world over for the crap Dinosaur/Jurassic 5 connection, as the Titanosaurus in question was of course from the late Cretaceous period.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry - Sounds of Jamaica (2014)

This is an interesting one. We all know that Lee burned down his famous Black Ark from the seventies where all these famous recording of his were made. Well some guy has recreated the Ark in London and Lee has popped in and produced a double album 'recreating' as near as possible the sound of these historic recordings. The album is called  Back On The Controls (2014)  and from what I have heard is rather good. Well done Lee.

James - 'Moving On' (2014)

Another pleasant surprise performer at this year's Latitude Festival is soundtrack to the 90's guys for me, James. I've always enjoyed Tim Booth's voice and am looking forward to seeing them, there's guaranteed to be a good up vibe with favourite classics such as Waltzing Along, Laid and of course massive 'stand'out track Sit Down which actually reminds me of my 18th birthday bash. This song is the first single released from new album La Petit Mort which is out June 2nd. I've heard a couple of songs so far from it and have not been disappointed, great energy and 'try your damnedest not to sing-along' choruses. Perfect sunny day music!

Future Islands - 'A Dream Of You and Me' (2014)

Following last week's choice by Shellhunter I decided to follow suit and listen to an artist that will feature at this years Latitude festival. I chose Future Islands who are a band that we saw in a small venue (somewhere) in London a couple of years ago and they've been championed by Shellhunter a few times on this blog. This is the final track on their 2014 album 'Singles' and for me it sums them up perfectly. Great singalong lyrics with really pleasing melodies. All in all a perfectly pleasant pop song.

Wooden Arms - December (2014)
I've been listening to a bit of piano based music lately. Artists such as Agnes Obel, Nils Frahms and It was a nice surprise to discover Wooden Arms. They are a Norwich-based 7 piece band who describe themselves as "alternative, classical & indie". Violin, Cello, Piano, Guitar and 5 part vocal harmonies, "a blend of classical instrumentation meeting modern melody". Bloody lovely!

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - Gimme Dat Harp Boy (1968)

I had just moved down to London I managed to 'swing' a transfer from East Kilbride Tax Office to one in Isleworth, opposite the Fire Station, if you know Isleworth. I think it is a college or something nowadays. The Inland Revenue paid all my moving expenses etc. Nice people!

Compared to East Kilbride, the place was like something out of Dickens, it smelt musty and of old books. The people there were all ancient and set in there ways, I was like a toad in heat without a pond.

There was one guy who was different, he was black, had a straggle beard, was always hunched and always smelt of stale tobacco. The tips of his fingers were stained brown. Sometimes, when he returned from the toilet, there was that unmistakable aroma in the air which you would associate more with Lee Scratch Perry than with a Tax Officer.

He was always alone and people avoided him. When I first talked to him, I was told I should not get too close as he was not the type to be involved with and he was being watched??. This just annoyed me and I started to make a point of going with him for lunch and tea breaks.

He invited me round to his pad one night and I found him to have a wicked sense of humour and he was heavily into music and poetry. He loved Zappa and Captain Beefheart, I had just got into The Captain and had just bought Strictly Personal where this song comes from. He was a great guy when you broke the surface and we became friends..

I only stayed about 4 months as I got a job with British Airways. I never did pay back the expenses I got from the Inland Revenue. I pleaded poverty.

I do know one thing, I disliked working there and the only thing that made it bearable was  'the guy that nobody talked too'. I can't even remember his name, but I have a clear vision of him and the laughs we had together. It was a shame I lost contact with him. I seem to loose contact with most of the people I have had 'close encounters' with. Still, I have the visions, I have the memories. They can't take that away. Can they?!

The Orb & Lee 'Scratch' Perry - 'Golden Clouds' (2012)

I can't help but think each time I hear a new Lee 'Scratch' Perry tune, it's like listening to the tired ramblings of an old man. A bit like the mumbling tramp at Slough bus station, I so often tried to frantically avoid after school. But hold on maybe that's the whole point, we want to hear his bizarre incantations!!! Wash your mouth out flycasual!!!....this is Roots Reggae legend Lee Perry you are talking about. This time around it's an album collaboration with the lazy, electro dub duo and equally eccentric, The Orb, it's what dub fans have probably always wanted, I know I was particularly excited. There are no doubt some great, if a little peculiar, tracks on the album but I've chosen 'Golden Clouds', a reworking of the Orb classic 'Little Fluffy Clouds'. Lovely!

I recently got back in to Lee 'Scratch' Perry through a blog we follow called Unthought, of though, somehow, so check out it's dedicated Saturday Scratch for some Perry Perry sauce!!??

Beat Connection - 'Further Out' (2012)

I'm loving this track by Seattle group Beat Connection. I was wondering when another electro group were going to grab me with their use of steel drums. From what I gather they started out recording stuff on GarageBand (music and podcast recording software made by Apple for us non music makers) and then worked as DJs. I've also heard that they use handclaps in a track or two and quite frankly there aren't enough songs out there now with those in my opinion! I've read quite a few positive reviews of their latest release, 'The Palace Garden' and most mentioning the "sunny" and "uplifting" nature of their album, not to mention how clever and complex their compositions are. I shall be popping this on in the car on the way to work, anything to ease the pain of going in on a scorching hot Sunday afternoon! Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Household Goods

I know I am getting old, and although I'm not quite at the mid-life crisis stage yet, I'm getting there.  I'm not a fan of this DJ's name but this track combines the styles of 3 artists that make me tap my Cons. Call it a musical Curry, Chips & Rice, albeit, Hot Chip meets Calvin Harris meets Deadmau5.  Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (TEED) has already remixed tracks by Lady Gaga, Katy Perry & Professor Green and features on Nick Grimshaw & Annie Mac's shows. It's one for a Saturday Night, but listen carefully - it's pretty dark stuff!!

The Vaccines - I always new(2012)
 

I quite liked a few of the tracks on the Vaccines first album 'What did you expect from the Vaccines' (2011) especially 'Post Break-up Sex'. This track 'I always new' is from their new Album 'Come of Age' and is a bit of a throw back to the sixties, whether that is intentional or not. It has a good melody and a chorus that will have you singing along to.  Well, as the Good Tune Doctor says 'lets go to bed' take the vaccines and you will feel much better for it!

Black Moth - Blackbirds Fall (2012)

We all need some Rock in our lives to blow away life's cobwebs....blackbird pie, skulls, vomit (???, see video) you can't beat it can you? Well maybe you could but this is a shredding piece of riff heavy, no nonsense old school rock which I happened to stumble upon a recommendation by The Stool Pigeon music journal. The Leeds quintet, fronted by fierce vixen of rock, Harriet Bevan have been 'axe wielding' since 2010 and 'Blackbirds Fall' is taken from their debut album The Killing Jar. Great stuff!!

Delicate Steve - Two Lovers (2012)

I'm just a sucker for a slinky guitar riff, especially when it sounds like a combo of Eric Clapton/George Harrison getting together with AIR.  This track, which could easily fit into those classic "chill out" albums of the 00's, is by 24 year old multi-instrumentalist Delicate Steve (aka Steve Marion). A dreamy "trip" for couples who want to bump in the night, it gets me wanting to dim the lights, burn a scented candle and jump into a hot tub.

Rudimental Ft. John Newman - 'Feel The Love' (2012)

I had a friend over the other day and we were watching the top ten of the most popular dance music videos. I haven't watched music videos in so long, it was great to see old faves like The Prodigy and 'Lola's Theme' but this one stood out because I had heard it a few times on the radio but never knew what it was. It sounded to me a bit like Cee Lo Green meets Chase and Status. I though the video was pretty cool too. It's what the homies would do if we were still running around on horses instead of suped up old skool rides! Rudimental is not what I assumed (another bloke from da hood who made good) but a quartet of producers and songwriters from down in 'ackney in London mate! I like a bit of dub step dance and this is just the ticket, especially with it's equestrian themed vid!

I have heard this before but as it is included in a new 2012 release Bob Marley and the Wailers - Trench Town Rising : The Lee Perry Sessions  I will make this my track of the week as it deserves to be heard. It is an early take on my favourite Bob Marley track and has that fabulous raw rebel feel. You will be more familiar with the Exodus version which is slowed down and had all the latest studio advantages of the time.
