Songs of Boda - Where My Hands Might Go (2015)


Here's "Where My Hands Might Go" by Swedish Singer/Songwriter Daniel Skoglunds, a.k.a  Songs of Boda.  Before you think it being about the fumblings of a 14 year old, it's about playing a guitar -which is perfectly demonstrated with a hypnotic guitar melody that can help reduce the blood pressure.  It features on the album, Loophole.

These guys have been going for sometime but are new to me. I like this one from their new album Pale Horses (2015).  Chugs along quite nicely, then you get a change of mood with the violent chorus. Excellent. Look out for Red Cows and Pale Horses I say!

Jacco Gardner - 'Find Yourself' (2015)

Normally I struggle to find a TOTW as I don't often listen to new music... However thanks to Shellhunter for pointing me in the direction of  'Discover Weekly'. I'm now having to juggle about 7 or 8 tracks!!! Every Monday, Spotify chooses a playlist of 30 tracks based upon my recent listening. It's almost creepy to think that Spotify has been rooting through my bins and hiding in my wardrobe for any hints of tracks it wants to share with me. But if they continue to give me a good weeks listening I don't mind them going through my sock drawer. I was debating over choosing Elbow or The Vaccines, but plumped for this track by an unknown (to me at least) artist from Holland. I couldn't find much about him, he does have a Wikipedia page, but unfortunately my Dutch isn't what it ought to be so I don't have a Scooby what it says!!! It's a nice summery sounding track which helps brighten up my morning as its absolutely rissing down with pain at the moment.

Isn't it terrible when people know you better than you know yourself? Actually, why is it terrible when they know exactly what floats your boat. Thank you Flycasual for pinging me this one in my inbox, I LOVE IT!!!! It's rocketed straight into Shell Hunter's Best of 2015. This gentle fellow needs no introduction and has featured frequently on TuneDr radio waves. I've always been a big fan and claimed he was a musical genius able to chameleon himself into any style or music genre. This type being my favourite, the 80s! No comments about the "oh, oh, oh" backing sounding like New Kids On The Block though please!

Roisin Murphy - 'Evil Eyes' (2015)

Cor! I've always had a thing for Roisin Murphy, I think it's maybe because she's a bit of a fruit cake which is also reflected in her music. She's also currently my 'Star Pass', a gentlemen's agreement with my wife, that should I meet Roisin shopping at Asda for example, then I would allow her to come home with me for a cup of tea and talk about that dirty bass on her latest track, 'Evil Eyes'. My wife's, interestingly or not, is Martin Clunes, as it reminds her of her Vauxhall Astra driving, older boyfriend who used to work at the local golf club. She's got a good swing out of it at least. Hairless Toys, Roisin's 3rd solo album proper, was released last month, a welcome return after a 7 year hiatus.

All Van Morrision fans out there will of course  know Van started of  as part of  the magnificent Them. They recorded two albums in the mid sixties and they are a great indication of where Van was heading. They are both nothing short of brilliant. Van's voice is raw and gives you goose bumps with its' sheer power.and quality.

Both these tracks are personal favourites, but the albums are filled with high quality tracks. Check out Them's cover of  Dylan's I'ts all Over Now Baby Blue and you will see where Beck got his sample for Jack-Ass.

Listen also to Here Comes The Night probably one of the most perfect pop/rock singles ever.  Not far behind is Gloria, another stormer. 

There is a compilation album of both Them albums containing extra tracks and it is a must have in any collection.  It is called  The Story of Them (1997)

Here is a track from German Indie Band The Notwist from their new album Close to the Glass (2014). I can't believe they have been going since 1989 and this is their 9th album. I never even heard of them before.

This is a great driving commercial track with one of these catchy riffs that will burn itself into your sub- conscious.

Don't you think the video is very apt with all that rain you poor guys are having at the moment.

Sorry can't stay just putting my shorts and t-shirt on, must be 25 degrees to-day and a  bright blue sky.

Tinariwen - 'Imidiwan Ahi Sigdim' (2014)

With all that perpetual rain and gales we've been having, it makes a nice change to feel that desert wind in your face, albeit through the speakers. 'Imidiwan Ahi Sigdim' is an evocative piece of Saharan Soul taken from Tinariwen's 6th album, Emmaar, released last week. To avoid the conflict in Mali, they recorded the album in a completely different desert this time, the Mojave in the US. With Jack White's producer, Vance Powell, at the helm and with a host of guests including Chilli Peppers, guitarist Vince Klinghoffer, helping out, it still has that desolate feel but adds a touch of that psychedelic American Desert Rock feel to it. Still perfect escapism, as is the atmospheric video.

Beck - "Love" ('2014')


I've had a hectic few weeks and have had very little "home" time.  So this one is for the missus. This version of the track, originally from John Lennon's 1970 debut album 'John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band', is taken from 'Sweetheart 2014', a forthcoming Starbucks compilation of artist performing covers of their favourite love songs.  It stands up against the original, but Lennon's version will always pip it as I had it playing when my wife walked down the aisle.

Boy & Bear - 'Southern Sun' (2014)

Track of the year alert! I don't know how but I just have that feeling, I can't get enough of this song at the moment. Boy & Bear are an Aussie folk-rock quintet with a couple of albums, both topping the ARIA Album Charts. Their album released last year called Harlequin Dream reached number 1 in its first week! Now you can't say fairer than that for a recommendation right? When I heard this, the chorus reminded me a bit of a song I loved by Everything But The Girl, 'I didn't know I was looking for love'. Boy and Bear have a sort of Lamb Chop, Grandaddy Americana thing going complete with mandolin and its just the sort of stuff I feel like hearing right now. Just have to imagine myself standing on the top of Ayers Rock and the feeling is complete!

Bombay Bicycle Club - 'Luna' (2014)

As soon as this started I thought it's the Knight Rider theme tune... Ok so it's not, but for a minute it almost kinda was sort of... To me anyway... But I digress, the BBC are back with another great song from their latest album 'So Long, See You Tomorrow' which this week became their first number one album. They are currently in the middle of a European tour and arrive back in the UK at the beginning of March before heading across the pond in April for a couple of months in North America. Not to worry though, they will be back in July where I will see them at Latitude 2014! The video features synchronised swimming which is always fun to watch too !!

Future Islands - 'Seasons (Waiting On You)' (2014)

My favourite synth-pop group finally have a new single out, followed by a new ablum entitled 'Singles' in March! Future Islands fast became my most listened to group of 2011 (see more here) and are also due to do a couple of gigs here in London in the next few months. This video is a cocked Stetson to cowboys and fits perfectly with their signature 80s dreamy sound. I'm definitely feeling a grower in this one, it gives me goose bumps! Why, it's purtier than a new calf in springtime!

Linkin Park & Steve Aoki - 'A Light That Never Comes' (2013)

I find it hard to believe that this is Linkin Park's 25th single release. I was a huge fan when they came onto the scene in 2000 but I felt that after a while their tracks sounded a bit samey. And this track has elements of the samey-ness that drove me away a little, but maybe the electro addition that Steve Aoki brought to the party has helped (is it me or does the intro sound like 'Kickstarts by Example ??). This was released in October last year and has only just hit my musical radar. Its from their second remix album 'Recharged' and on the strength of this I'll certainly give it a listen.

Beck - Blue Moon (2014)

 

Mr Hansen has been very frugal with tasters from his long awaited new album Morning Phase (2014) I heard bits of this track a few weeks ago and was pretty impressed. Now that I have heard the full track it was worth the wait. If the rest of the album is on a par then we have a real classic on our hands. But I have always thought that Beck albums are pretty inconsistent, there's usually some inspirational brilliance mixed in with a lot of mediocrity. I am sure this will not impress all you Beck die hards, saying that I recognise the brilliance and am thirsty for some more.

Damon Albarn - 'Everyday Robots' (2014)

I promised myself that if I ever got a smartphone I wouldn't be like one of the countless people, aimlessly walking around with their heads buried in their device, always connected, always aloof. Unfortunately I have become an everyday robot, like the opening line of this song, as I find myself doing just that, a scourge on modern society, I suppose. Despite the sobering tone, the first single taken from Damon Albarn's solo album of the same name, is a fabulously bleak track with the strings particularity haunting, a sign of things to come. I'm a big fan of Damon in all his forms and will be looking forward to it's release sometime in April.....oooh a text, somebody sent me a pic of a cat in a suit..ahh!!!

Silversun Pickups - 'Cannibal' (2014)


The Los Angeles foursome are a band that I'll occasionally listen to when I need a fix of some fuzz-pop. It's scary to think that they've been around for nearly 10 years and in Feb, they will be releasing The Singles Collection. It features tracks from the band's debut EP, 2005's Pikul, and three full-length albums: 2006's Carnavas, 2009's Swoon, and 2012's Neck of the Woods. "Cannibal" is the one new track on the release. Smashing Pumpkins-meets-NIN.

Pet Shop Boys - 'The Last to Die' (2013)

Here is a track from the  Pet Shop Boys new album  Electric (2013) I just had to choose this cover of a classic Springsteen song from his album Magic (2007). I have always been a fan of TPB ever since West End Girls.

Behaviour (1990) was one of my albums of that year.  I do believe their best has come and gone, but I still have a soft spot for them. It is probably a bit unfair also playing the Bruce version, as it is far superior, but what the heck, some out there may not have heard it. Its win win!!

Arctic Monkeys - 'Do I Wanna Know' (2013)

What can I say, Alex Turner and the barrel are back with another great song. Instantly recognisable it has the usual clever lyrics that I have enjoyed since they first broke onto the scene a few years back. I've seen it described as a great James Bond style song and I see what they mean. The video is simple but effective and probably cost a bundle to make. They are touring the UK later this year and having seen them at the Olympic Opening Ceremony last year its a gig I know I would love.

If you are lucky to attend this weekend's gig London gig at Union Chapel, you may have a better idea than I of what Beck's recently promised acoustic album is like.  Instead he's teasing us like a tasselled temptress with this vinyl only, single release to follow up 'Defriended' (a previous Shell Hunter TOTW). I'm intrigued as I eagerly await anything by the musical genius, which is Beck Hanson.

NIN - 'Come Back Haunted' (2013)

Industrial heavyweights, Nine Inch Nails are back but it sounds like whatever excursion they've come back from, they've had a bad time of it. It's just as well really and I mean that in the nicest possible way of course, as 'Come Back Haunted' is as good as any of the dark, nightmarish soundscapes that Trent Reznor has created and to which I enjoy wallowing too. To top it all off, Mr Eraserhead himself, David Lynch, directs the suitably unsettling video but I chose the audio clip above as it's far more entertaining, if you wish to make your eyes bleed click here to see it. This is an aural advance party, as the NIN's 9th album, Hesitation Marks, drops September 3rd.

Its shaping up to be a great summer for dance songs! This cheeky little number has a winning formula once again throwing Pharell into the mix. I love the little Michael Jackson style "woo" running all the way through. Robin Thicke has been on the scene for some time, getting recognition for producing and writing for well known R'N'B artists including Cristina Aguilera. This new album also called Blurred Lines will be his 6th solo album and he has been the first white male artist to top the R'N'B Billboard charts since George Michael. Not bad at all!

Jon Hopkins - Immunity (2013)

 

This is pretty awe inspiring stuff. I was please to find Jon Hopkins had recorded a new album and was even more delighted to find that he has paired up with King Cresote again on this simply brilliant track. It is one of those that could be on all day and you would not get bored. Excuse for me a second while I switch it back on for the 10th time. It is a slow burner, but stick with it and wait for the King's vocals, it is pure chicken skin.

Close your eyes, this one can take you places other song cannot reach..  This may well be a contender for my tracks of the year so far.

Dinosaur Pile-Up - Derail (2013)

Named after a scene in the King Kong remake from 2005, this band hail from Leeds. Their debut album was reminiscent of the debut by The Foo Fighters in that lead singer Matthew Bigland wrote, recorded and sung all of the tracks. Smarty-pants !!!
This track which sounds like it could be a Foo Fighters cover is off of their new album Nature Nurture and if this track is anything to go by then I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I'm trying to figure out who the voice reminds me of.... So far I'm stuck on Dave Edmunds.
The video is in a bizarre coincidence, similar to my choice from last week in that it features a violent female character. Eagle-eyed viewers may even recognise her (my only clue is that she was an X-Factor contestant who didn't like to wear shoes !!)

KINS - 'Post Tropical Storm' (2013)

 KINS are a four piece Anglo-Aussie band based in Brighton which recently triggered one of my simple pleasures - the joy of making me stop what I am doing and get me thinking, "Who is this!".
Musically, they sound like Keaton Henson/The Villagers/The Foals, which is like having all my  favourite ingredients in one dish, and boy is it tasty!  You can Download this (for free) from Bandcamp here or Soundcloud here

Dizraeli and the Small Gods - 'Sailor' (2013)

Dizraeli and the Small Gods are a Bristolian (where else?) collective led by poet/rapper, Rowan Sawday (Dizraeli), which have taken the colourful task of marrying traditional English Folk music with Hip Hop. At first, on listening to the album Moving in the Dark, I was a bit cautious by the prospect of a Morris dancing Hip Hop troop but persistence paid off and I am glad I was proved wrong, swayed by Dizraeli's sharp storytelling talent as well as the Small Dogs' Folk harmonies and musicianship. And the whole concept works, no more so than the Hip Hop shanty that is 'Sailor', an atmospheric tale featuring fellow UK MC, Jam Baxter and vocalist Cate Ferris who provides the voice for the haunting and memorable chorus. It's some of the most uniquely British and innovative music I've heard in awhile. This ain't no gimmick y'all, I'm down with ye olde skool.

Beck - 'Defriended' (2013)



Beck is back...hooray! I read that he has 2 albums due out this year, an acoustic one and a new one to follow on from where Modern Guilt left off. Its about bloody time too Mr. Hansen! I instantly liked this new track, its like an electro slow dance! If you listen hard enough, you can hear the same bumbling bass that was in fantastic song from Midnight Vultures, Debra. Now that Ive had a taster, I want more. I always applauded Beck for his musical prowess, being a master of instruments, sampling and spanning all genres. He basically floats my boat full stop and to top it all off, he is the sort of totty you be safe bringing home to mum. I'm a bit miffed that I wasn't aware he was touring until it was too late. He's playing the Union Chapel in Islington on July 7th but it's showing as sold out! Gutted!

You could very well be single, indulging in a dinner for one or you could very well be heartbroken and be eating said fluffy bunny. Lucky for you we have all bases covered with TuneDr's very own Valentine's playlist, in love, the breakup and being alone.

The Breakup: Isaac Hayes - 'Walk On By' (1969)

Sometimes you need a girl to shit in your heart to truly start appreciating songs. Isaac Hayes' classic rendition of the Burt Bacharach composition is a firm favourite of mine and one such song. You hear so much more clearer after having your heart broken, at least that's one positive.

Alone: Soft Cell - 'Sex Dwarf' (1981)

Just because she liked 50 Shades of Grey didn't mean she'd go for this! Single now and are you surprised? Lets face it, if you're listening to this you are, or should be alone. "They all love your miniature ways". Horrifically good! I'm just glad the official video was of poor quality but if for any reason you need to ruin the mood on Valentine's day, see the video here.....

In Love: Art Garfunkel - 'I've Only Got Eyes for You' (1975)

We have all been there, in a crowded place, but not being aware of anybody else but her or maybe making a horrible journey, that normally you want to end as soon as possible, but because she is with you, you want it to go on for ever. Why? because you Love her. You are in Love of course.    

The Breakup: Righteous Brothers -'You've Lost that Loving Feeling' (1964) 

Possibly one of the best records ever made, certainly in my top twenty. You always know when 'that loving feeling' is going. You feel the pain, the twisting Knife in your heart, you want to die, what is left in life, she was your world, your future, you love her!

Alone: The Four Tops - 'Ask the Lonely' (1965)

'Ask The Lonely' is one of the most underated 'breakup'songs of all time and one of my favourite/greatest voices of all time, the great  Levi Stubbs. Along with The Temptations, they knocked out some of the best pop music which my ears have had the pleasure to have heard. This is pure brilliance in the space of 3 minutes. You're stunned into submission, with the shear excellence of what can be achieved in such a  short space of time. When it finishes you just want to hear it again and again....isn't it great, when you can look back on 'all that pain' and now enjoy 'all that pain'.

Bob Marley once said ...'when music hits you feel no pain'. Seriously Bob! 'Go ask the lonely!!'

Love: The Lightning Seeds - 'Sense' (1992)

Its the simplicity of this track that I love. Who can explain the reason you feel the way you do when you're in love. "The only reason is just because". Fabulous!

Breakup: Limp Bizkit - 'Re-Arranged' (1999)

When you're hurting and hate the world, metal and angriness can be the best medicine. Fred Durst gets it so right in this seriously bitter song which I remember constantly playing after getting my heart broken many moons ago.

Beck beautifully encapsulates how you feel when you are on your own. You go over what you should/could have done differently and ultimately struggle not to blame yourself for what went wrong in your relationship.

As a kid, I was subjected to Cliff Richard & Dr. Hook by my Mum. Nowadays that's tantamount to reaching for the phone and calling Childline. Now I'm getting older, I realise that the latter of Mum's choices have written some seriously great tracks. (Sylvia's Mother, Sexy Eyes to name a couple) and this one in particular gives me goose bumps when I hear it. Thanks Mum

The Breakup: Puddle Of Mudd - 'Blurry' (2001)

A great song which deals with a couple splitting up with a child in the middle. Thankfully I've never experienced this. But out of bad things, good things happen. This song.

Alone: Calexico - 'Alone (Again Or)' (2004)

One of my favourite covers by one of my favourite bands of probably my favourite Love song. Nuff said.

Anger, fear, hate,  Yoda used all of these to describe the dark side whereas I would also add Nirvana. I used to listen to this on my own. It may explain how I turned out!

I've had a difficult few weeks. Driving, long days, exhaustion are all taking there toll.  I've also found myself in a Zombie like state and have, for the first time in ages, have not been enjoying music.  I cannot listen to music without thinking about work.  The long drive home, which used to be filled with listening to the latest Spotify playlist, now is filled with Radio 4 - and not the Brooklyn Dance-Rock type.

However, is this the light at the end of the tunnel? It popped up on a playlist and has put the twinkle in my xmas lights.

It was released in March and features on the Jeff, Who Lives at Home soundtrack and bears similarity to his 2002 melancholia album Sea Change.  Neil Young-esq, banjo, strings & big acoustic guitar - what's not to like?

He has recently released a sheet-music album (is there such a thing?) called Song Reader.  You can download some of the sheet music through SongReader.net, but you need to be handy with a musical instrument.  I might try to play some on my Jazz Flute!

CAT POWER - Stuck inside a Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again

I went with Cat Power's version from the 'I'm Not There' Soundtrack. Excellent Soundtrack, but if the truth be know the film was disappointing. It had its moments but they were few and far between. Other contenders were again the Grateful Dead and Steve Gibbons. 

BECK - Leopard-Skin-Pill-Box Hat

I like Beck's version from the Album  'War Child - Heroes vol. 1' it does stray away a bit from the original but never the less, I like it and it's my choice, so there. Other ones I considered were versions by Raphael Saddiq and Jimmy Lafave.

RICHIE HAVENS - Just Like a Woman


This was a difficult one as there are so many fantastic covers of this brilliant Dylan song. This version is  Live from 1974 but his studio version taken from the album 'Mixed Bag' (1967) is probably better . There were so many contenders here, Van Morrison, Jo Cocker and Jeff Buckley to name but a few. 

EARL SCRUGGS - Most likely You go Your Way


I love this version taken from the album 'Live at Kansas Stat'(1973) great backing and I just love his voice. Other possibilities were the Nighthawks or the Yardbirds.

DEBORAH COLEMAN - Temporary Like Achilles

This cover is taken from the excellent 'Blues on Blonde on Blonde' it is one of these songs which has not been covered too often. My other choice that I had available was by the Don Olsen Gang, which is more than acceptable too.

TUESDAY BLUES! Beck - Everybody's Got to learn Sometime

Beck Cover Me Tuesday Blues

Some songs have the ability to make you happy, even though they are sad.  When I first heard this in the Jim Carrey & Kate Winslet film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it was like a sniper shooting me from range! The song was originally recorded by The Korgis (1980) but has been covered by numerous artists ranging from Dream Academy to Yazz.  However, this version by Beck gets me every time.

Beck, however, still divides opinion. Many people just think of him when he was in his 'loser' phase, or during his geek-tastic 'Where it's at' stage. But he's not a one trick pony. He's always innovative and can introduce so many curve-balls to his music that it's often hard to keep up.  I, personally love everything he's done, but I really like his more acoustic, albums (such as Mutations, Sea Change).

So give it a listen, if it gets you, like it got me you'll be playing it over and over again.

Hell Yes! It's Thursday I'm in Love...a chance to share some of my favourite songs.

Beck - 'Where it's at' (1996)

Ever since the conception of this blog, I have spent many a sleepless night painstakingly deliberating which Beck track I should post. Multi talented, humorous and with an eclectic style transcending all genres, he's hands down my favourite artist. Probably why it has been a 'Sophie's Choice' of sorts as there are so many good songs to choose from. So I went back to the beginning and picked the track that really got me into him in a big way, the beat driven, cool organ hook, ode to Hip Hop from the album Odelay, 'Where it's at'.

Our relationship, however wasn't all plain sailing as when I first saw him perform 'Loser' on Top of the Pops with his band of geriatrics, I thought it was nothing more than a gimmicky act and his album 'mellow gold' a bit too bizarre. I even remember listening to Odelay on the bus home from my monthly splurge at Our Price, thinking it was crap and wanting to return it. Thankfully it was in the days when you actually listened to an album the whole way through, warts and all and my persistence paid off as Odelay is a modern classic.

The video is pretty good too. Now I'm not remotely interested in Line Dancing but this song could quite possibly sway me. Draw the curtains, send the wife out and get your Stetson, chaps and boots on and hoe down!
