SFW's - Best 5 of 2014

2014 - Another great year of music

The Fauns - 4am.
Dreamy, atmospheric shoe-gaze perfection from Bristols The Fauns.  Listen to it while the sun rises and you'll feel like Indiana Jones when he finds the location of the ark!

Glass Animals - Gooey
This shattered me when I featured it first in April, but hearing it live in a hot and sweaty tent at Latitude was something else.

Thurston Moore - The Best Day
Sonic Youth's main man showed us all that his best material isn't behind him with this colossal dirt-fuzz filled masterpiece!

Night Beds - Head for the hills
Singer/Songwriter Winston Yellen teased us in January 2014 with his reverb-heavy magnificence! I'm looking forward to 2015!

Hiss Golden Messenger - Saturday's Song
Southern charm from MC Taylor blew us all away at Latitude 2014 and converted us all to believers!  My Track of the Year!

It was never supposed to be easy, getting this list to twenty took weeks and last minute tweaks!  Check out my top twenty below!

Sfw's Best Of Latitude 2014 - Hiss Golden Messenger, Glass Animals, The Editors,

After sleepless nights, baby wipe showers and festival toilets,
there was also some great music on show!!

You cannot see the sweat!

Hiss Golden Messenger - Saturday Song (2014)

What a way to start the festival! First up for me was Hiss Golden Messenger who is North Carolina based songwriter M.C. Taylor.  70s Country Rock meets JJ Cale matched our early excitement and got us tapping our feet, slurping our beer and blew us all away. Saturday Song features on their new album "Lateness of Dancers", out September 9, 2014.  Give it a few listens - it gets better and better!

Glass Animals - Gooey (2014)

Tune Doctor Favourites Glass Animals appeared in Keith Allen's Establishment Club which was packed for the Oxford indie-poppers performance.  The lads faultlessly performed tracks from their debut album Zaba, which was released in June.  Slow beats, soulful vocals from them and a mix of mojito's (and yet more heat) had us bouncing!

The Editors - A Ton of Love (2013)
The Editors performance on Friday night restored my faith in a band that I've sadly neglected.  Why they weren't headlining still baffled me - Two Door Cinema Club cancelled and they ended up getting Lily Allen!  A hit-filled set reminded us all how great this band are.  My faith has been restored!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 13/04/2014 Glass Animals, New Order, Cousin Marnie

Three tracks that weren't in opposition for us...

Sfw:-
Glass Animals - Gooey(2014)

This ones a bit, er, Gooey.  With its artsy video that features characters who pose nude, dance, wrestle, and all linked together by the presence of a slimy, mysterious substance. Despite that sounding like a Saturday night out for MTV Valleys - the bump and groove beat and falsetto vocals is as infectious as a bout of ebola. It's by Glass Animals, an Oxford based four-piece who have just released it on their 'Gooey' Ep.  It was produced by writer/musician/producer/extraordinaire Paul Epworth.

Old Pa:-
New Order -Singularity (2014)

It is always exciting to hear a new, New Order song even although probably their best days have come and gone. This is a live version of the new song Singularity recorded at Lollaplooza in Buenos Aires. There are several takes of the song available in YouTube, none are brilliant quality, but this take is about the best. It is typical of vintage New Order and has a nice hook (with apologise to Hooky who is not there).  I am certainly looking forward to a rumoured album to be released later this year. I will definately give it a shot..

Flycasual:-
Cousin Marnie - 'Farewell Nellie' (2013)

I've been captivated by the haunting 'Farewell Nellie', all this week. Daydreaming about the song being an old sea shanty for a fisherman off to dangerous seas, or a Country ballad about a soldier off to war, or a disgruntled airport worker, like I, reluctantly driving into work early one morning, the parallels are striking! I read about London's Cousin Marnie (not really her name) earlier this year, about how her style ranges from Country to Hip Hop to Folk. "A treat for the ears!', I thought and last year's debut EP, Sleeping, is a worthy listen. Which interestingly covers four Carter Family tracks, a group that were a big influence on her. Her forthcoming EP, Cain, is out later this year and you can hear the title track 'Cain' on Soundcloud.
