Wild Beasts - Sweet Spot (2014)


"Sweet Spot" is the latest release from Wild Beasts, which comes from their latest LP Present Tense. It's bonkers to think this is their fourth LP, as it only seems like yesterday that they appeared on the scene. The guitar melody is great, then when the synth kicks in you'll think you are in Tron. If you don't like it straight away, give it a few goes, it is infectious.

Coldplay - 'Midnight' (2014)

You love to hate them, you hate to love them blah blah blah. That doesn't matter to me, if I like the sound of it then I don't care who it is. The other morning I was driving to work on an early at stupid o'clock (4am) when the XFM DJ revealed that Coldplay has posted a new track on their website but no other info about where it was from or what for. I wasn't really concentrating at the time, just watching road. By the end of it, I felt all warm and fuzzy. It was such a different and chilled out song, I really enjoyed it! When I got to work ended up hearing it 3 times before 7am and even on 2 different radio stations. By then I was hooked. Give it a go, it's worth it.

With a name like that they just had to be heard. I can't stop playing this, it gets a little bit addictive. I am really interested now to hear the full album which incidentally is well under 30 mins long. The album is  Say Yes To Love (2014). I am pretty pleased I cum by this track and I hope this little taster moistens you ear buds.

Dirtmusic - 'Red Dust' Feat Samba Toure (2014)

Samba Toure's album, Albala, was one of my favourite albums of last year, sombre and poignant, it was the Desert Blues at it's very best (read about it here). So naturally I was excited when I heard he features in Dirtmusic's forthcoming fourth album, Lion City. Aussie/US band Dirtmusic were originally formed as a Roots/Folk band but started recording in Mali after meeting another Desert Blues favourite of mine, Tamikrest at the annual 'Festival Du Desert'. Collaborating regularly with local musicians, they subtly incorporate their 'Western' influences with the bamboozling brilliant Bamako talent. Samba Toure lends his vocals to the atmospheric 'Red Dust', a reflective dub journey through a hurting Mali.

St Vincent - 'Digital Witness'

I first heard of St Vincent (AKA Annie Clark) when I downloaded a playlist a few years back. Amongst the 100 or so tracks was a song called 'Sleep All Summer' which was a collaboration between one The National & St Vincent. As a big fan of the former I immediately honed in on the track and wasn't disappointed, so much so that I put the song on the latest CD compilation that Shell Hunter and I had compiled.
Fast forward to 2014 and the release of her eponymous 4th album. Digital Witness is the second release from the album and has a dancy feel to it which reminds me a little of 'LaRoux' I've listened to the album a couple of times and on the strength of these 2 listens I will be checking out her back catalogue for sure.

One song that is a guarantee to get the hairs on the back of my neck standing to attention is this 5 minute masterpiece which I can't believe was released as far back as 2002. It will probably always be my favourite Coldplay track.
Whenever I hear the song and start singing along I always change one word in the lyrics as an homage to my favourite board game ever, Trivial Pursuit (a game that I have still never lost, although once did find myself in a losing position against Mrs Flycasual, but the game was never finished)

The line I change is :-
'I was just guessing at numbers and figures

For me, it was always The Beatles over the Stones. As a kid I listened to all their albums over-and-over again and when I was at music college I documented a large number of their songs to music score - which included every drum beat, tambourine shake and clap. You could say I liked them. When I heard that Macca had recorded with Giles Martin, Mark Ronson, Paul Epworth and Ethan Johns I was intrigued. "Please be good", "Please be good".  It's not good...it's bloody great!!! Welcome back Sir Paul!

Summer Camp - 'Fresh' (2013)

If you need a theme tune for an Indian summer, look no further. You can't beat a bit of Disco and the camper it is the better, I don't quite know what this says about me but that hardly matters as Summer Camp's nostalgic, 'Fresh', brushes shoulders with Daft Punk and Holy Ghost in this years Disco club. It's a bittersweet track, which recalls fond and heady memories of 'the first time' (which incidentally for me, was a disaster) before trying desperately trying to forget all about it as you nurse a broken heart (also a disaster). Summer camp are a London Girl/ Boy duo and 'Fresh' is taken from their second and self titled album out on Moshi Moshi records.

The Temperance Movement - Only Friend (2013)

 

Just for you, some old school no nonsence rock. This is a throw back to the 60s and 70s, when guitar heroes and gravelly voiced long haired boys, ruled the airwaves.

Here we have Glasgow's very own The Temperance Movement with a track from their self titled debut album. If you are in the right mood this hits the right spot. I just love this guys voice, a great riff and just a hint of swagger. They just might make it big.

Korn - 'Never Never' (2013)

Time for a bit of rawk refreshment I thought and flicked onto Kerrang radio at work last week. I instantly recognised Jonathan Davis' screechy voice but was trying to wrack my brain as to the song title. When it came up I realised it was new to me. Blimey, these guys are still rocking even now! Responsible for one of my fave all time tracks, Freak On A Leash, I became heavily into Korn from 1998 onwards. They had such a unique style of metal mixed with a thrilling bit of slap bass every now and then. This single, released in August marks the arrival of their 11th(!) studio album and the return of former band member Brian Welch fondly nicknamed "Head". I'm thinking about kicking back to the old school with my old baggy jeans with chain, dog colar and black hair dye as I will happily "dress the part" for my Korn revival!

I know I shouldn't be surprised, but they've gone and bloody well done it again. Coldplay have an amazing knack for coming out with great track after countless great track. Try as I might, I can't remember a song they have either released or even an album track that I haven't thought "Yeah, I like it" I remember Old Pa, once saying they were the band you want to hate but can't !!

This track was written specifically for the new Hunger Games: Catching Fire movie. It starts off slowly on the piano as some of their better tracks have and builds into great pop song.

Yep, they've got me again.

I absolutely adore this version of the Joseph Arthur song.  It was originally recorded by Stipe for the Hurricane Katrina benefit EP, released in 2005 and features Coldplay's Chris Martin.  I hadn't heard it for a few years and it's melancholy feel fits perfectly on this gloomy Tuesday morning.
