DYLAN COVERS # 191 Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower - Studio Rehersals/Like a Rolling Stone - Newport '69

The Holy Grail

JIMI HENDRIX - All Along the Watchtower - Rehearsals

This is just fabulous, it like finding the Holy Grail of Dylan Covers. It is pretty near a recognised fact that the Electric Ladyland version of All Along the Watchtower is probably the greatest Dylan cover of all time. I would have to agree, it takes a lot of beating. It is the perfect rock record, it has got the lot.

You can play this at my funeral and I will certainly be smiling when the flames come for me.

This can be found on the 6 CD set Naked Ladyland.  Above is a 35 min series of rehearsals showing how they get to the final recording. There is also some more of the same on one of the other discs. This is a must for Hendrix and Dylan fans alike. Absolutely Brilliant.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Live )

OLD PA'S WEDNESDAY CLUB

IS A.A. FOR YOU.?

There must be some way out of here!

JIMI HENDRIX - All ALONG THE WATCHTOWER (Live 1970)

It was Saturday morning in the early 1970s I sat on the couch, it was nearing mid-day.  I felt like death, my head was throbbing, I felt ill, but what the heck it was a great night.

There was a knock at the door, I did not feel like answering it, I did not want to talk to anyone. It was an old man with a stick, with an old woman, they must have been in their eighties.

Would you like to buy our Magazine sir!

Oh No! it was the Mormons, that is all I needed. I had not the will to argue and did not want to offend such nice old folk so I paid for the Mag.

I sat down again and picked it up, the front page said, Are you an alcoholic, see inside and find out. If you answered yes to four or more questions, then you are an Alcoholic. The questions were similar to below.

Answer YES or NO to the following questions.

1. Have you ever decided to stop drinking for a week or so, but only lasted for a couple of days?
2. Do you wish people would mind their own business about your drinking-- stop telling you what to do?
3. Have you ever switched from one kind of drink to another in the hope that this would keep you from getting drunk?
4. Have you had to have an eye-opener upon awakening during the past year?
5. Do you envy people who can drink without getting into trouble?
6. Have you had problems connected with drinking during the past year?
7. Has your drinking caused trouble at home?
8. Do you ever try to get "extra" drinks at a party because you do not get enough?
9. Do you tell yourself you can stop drinking any time you want to, even though you keep getting drunk when you don't mean to?
10. Have you missed days of work or school because of drinking?
11. Do you have "blackouts"?
12. Have you ever felt that your life would be better if you did not drink?

I answered yes to the whole twelve questions!

I poured myself a large drink!

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower

Old Pa's Wednesday Club

THERE'S NO CONFUSION
Help Me in My Weakness!

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - All Along the Watchtower (1968)

If you had to choose one track that you can call your favourite track of all time, what would it be? This is a question, that at sometime, you have asked, or someone has asked you and the answer is usually much about the same...

'Oh!, I could not answer that, as there are just too many'

'That is impossible, as it changes all the time'

It is one of those questions most people don't want to commit to, for one thing it 'kind of' exposes them.

'You say you are a big music fan and 'that' is your favourite track (what lousy taste). Who Cares ?

Flycasual once asked me that same question in the 90's and I hummed an hoed and gave 'you know what response?  Then it came to me, it is the Jimi Hendrix version of  'All Along the Watchtower'. It has everything I required, great lyrics, magnificent musicianship, a great melody and it was written by my favourite song writer Bob Dylan and most importantly, I just never get tired of hearing it. The intro is to 'swoon' to! The break in the middle is to 'orgasm' too! (whats an orgasm?)

Oh! God it reminds me of Shellhunter's eighteenth birthday party, it was held at a Sea Scouts Hall and both Flycasual and I were in charge of the music, I went for a break and onmy return, what was playing....but AATWT. Like any good Dad, I hit the dance floor and showed all these kids my best moves.

'I cringe when I look back. I cringe.'

'I cringe'

'there must be some way outta here'.

As you know, I am a great lover of Dylan covers and have listened to thousands, but to be perfectly honest this would have to be the best. There is nothing I can think of that beats it. A few are close of course.

One day I will give my top 10.

It was great to finally get 'the big question' off of my chest and really, it was all rather obvious.

'There is no confusion anymore'

What's your favourite?

Go on I dare you to commit yourself, you will feel so much better?

Don't carry the weight!.

I still have not changed my mind!!

But saying that!.....

Yesterday :  I was sitting outside with a bottle of wine (no beer, until Flycasual visits in two weeks) my first drink for a while (as on a diet again) and 'You Set The Scene' by Love came on and it was immediately my number one, it was followed by Van Morrison's 'Ballerina' and I lost control again...............

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Flaming Lips - I am the Walrus

The Flaming Lips, not fans of eggs anymore.

FLAMING LIPS - I am the Walrus

We went out just before Xmas for some Xmas decorations as we were staying in Spain this season, we usually return to the U.K. to be with Shellhunter and Flycasual. We bought some meat at our Butcher and Old Ma found a large tray of fresh double yolk eggs. (How do they know they are double yolks folk?).  I told Old Ma we will have to be careful with them as there was no top protection.

On the way back home we 'popped' into a local Bar for 'one'  drink and to check out if there was any space for Xmas dinner. We got involved with a disc Jockey guy who looked exactly like Keith Flint from The Prodigy. He had some bright red and green hair, with lots of metal bits on his ears and nose. According to him he travelled with The Prodigy when they toured and that Keith copied the look from him.

A brand new friend
It is strange over here in Spain, all guitarists that you meet have all jammed with Jimi Hendrix and all guys who have been in the Forces are ex SAS. People seem to re-invent themselves for some reason. I once met an Ex-army, guitarist, cyclist, tennis player. I will stop right there as you know where I am going with this. Anyway we had a great old time with KF look alike, he was great fun (top bloke)....and after a few whiskey shots we booked up for Xmas Lunch there.

'Too Late to stop now' was said  Good Old Van.  I have quoted that one more times than I have had whiskey shots.

On finals on the way home we popped into 'Pats Bar' just for 'one for the road'.  Old Ma got involved with a woman who said she was a medium. I asked the medium if she could get in touch with an old guitar buddy of mine, a J. Hendrix. It did not go down too well. We left pretty late and taking the shopping in I said to Old Ma be careful. She got in the gate and slid on her arse....eggs up in the air!

 £250 pound in anybodys' money.

Only 3 eggs survived from 24 (double yolkers too)  .Laika, our Husky cross gobbled them greedily all up like a Hog. Old Ma was ok by the way! Just a sore Bum.

The next morning when I went out the whole place was a mess, covered in thick yellowish eggy and gooey poos! and slimy lumpy vomit! and let's not mention the smell !! Thank God these eggs were not hard boiled or poor Laika would have been bouncing into Lapland.

Guess who was on clean up duty!  It was of course, all my fault!
A dog after a visit to 'Pats Bar'
As a foot note : we do not normally have such exciting sorties? or do we? Take last Saturday......!

Christmas lunch by the way was excellant, there was more than enough for a doggy bag for Laika and Dixie our Yorkie. We shared a table with a very interesting and entertaing older couple whom we have arranged to meet for a future lunch date.  We missed out Pat's Bar on the way home.??

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Jimi Hendrix & Love - The Everlasting Love One

MIDWEEK CRISIS you are in need of some loving, come to WEDNESDAY CLUB we've got Arthur Lee & Jimi Hendrix and you could be the One to share their everlasting Love.
JIMI HENDRIX & LOVE - The Everlasting Love One (outtake) (1970)

This track, as well as other outtakes have recently surfaced, of sessions Jimi had with Arthur Lee, the main man of Love (one of my favourite groups of all time). The first 3 Love albums were brilliant with 'Forever Changes' up there in my top few albums. Although I bought all Love's later stuff and have seen Arthur Lee a couple of times, they never hit the heights of the first 3 albums. I was not even aware that Hendrix was on one of the tracks from their 1970 'False Start' album.

After hearing the outtake, I immediately sought out the 'take' which made it on to the album. It is indeed a gem, how could I have possibly let this track slip through the net. Can it get any better? Jimi and Arthur playing together? It makes me all weak at the knees. If you want to hear probably my favourite Love track and definitely in my top 5 tracks of all time, check out my earlier Love post.

The recording session where this outtake originates was the result of a session recorded on 8-track, at Studio One, Olympic Sound Studios, in London on Tuesday 17 March 1970.
Do you wanna be in my band Jimi?

DYLAN COVER # 21 - Dave Mason - All Along the Watchtower x 3

DAVE MASON - Along the Watchtower (original)

I was really excited, I was visiting a new small record shop which had just opened round the corner, they had second hand records and you could make exchanges, perfect! The guys were very into it all and we hit it off right away. Then suddenly this song came on blasting out on their enormous Bose speakers. 'There must be someway out here'  (there was no way I was leaving)....All Along the Watchtower but who was it by? They informed me it was from Dave Mason's new self titled album (1974). What an introduction it has, especially when the guitar 'whows' at the beginning. They had to play it over and over again for me.

AALTW must be one of Bob's most covered songs and take away Mr Hendrix, then this must be about the best version around. Needless to say I later walked out of the shop with my new purchase closely guarded under my protective arm. All I needed now was a new amp and some Bose speakers.

The term PLAY IT LOUD was invented for this song.

There is also a Live version on his Album, 'Certified Live' and it is almost as good, what do you think?

DAVE MASON - All Along the Watchtower(Certified Live)

And finally the below version is taken from a Live XM Radio Broadcast released 2007, which is up there as well. He is still delivering the goods, great job Mr Mason!

Finally, the story goes that Dave and Hendrix were at a party and Dave introduced Jimi to AATWT and he immediately hit the studio and the result was, well we all know the result.

DYLAN COVER # 7 - Jimi Hendrix - Like a Rolling Stone (studio rehersal)

JIMI HENDRIX - Like a Rolling Stone (1968)

I found this by chance, 'praise be' to whom was responsible. Could this be the 'Holy Grail' of Dylan Covers, if not, it is way up there. I would just love to hear a finished version of this, I am drooling at the thought of it. Hendrix has covered the song on many occasions, never better than his version at the 'Monterey Festival 68' which is widely available and yes thats is his (Dylan's) Grandma over there.

There are 3 different versions of L.A.R.S. on the album 'Live at Winterlands, San Francisco 1968, which gets an official release later this year. At the end of this Post there is a 'taster' version of L.A.R.S. from the first day of this 3 day event, it is well worth hearing, in advance of the 'official' release.

I have also included another great version from Newport Pop Festival 69.

What is the greatest Dylan song? Is it 'L.A.R.S'. because of it's ground breaking significance? Or is it 'Blowin' in the wind' because of its brilliant simplicity? Or even 'Visions of Johanna'? The list is endless....what do you think?

More Dylan covers??
