Last week I watched a retrospective Jools Holland where various celebrities were recollecting their favourite moments. Amongst all the classic acts notably, Radiohead, Johnny Cash and KT Tunstall (featured here), this performance stood out by far. I'm not a huge fan of the Foo Fighters, especially in more recent times but this reaffirmed why I did like them in the first place. Jo Wiley, described being blown away by this performance as saying it was one of the loudest things she has ever heard, never mind '11', this was turned up to 12!

More importantly, it has the approval of my 3 year old son, who for some reason, has a serious penchant for rock music, the louder the better, perhaps not ready for the likes of Cradle of Filth or Cannibal Corpse but for the moment this certainly fit the bill.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE! - Janelle Monae - 'Tightrope' Live on Jools Holland


What a performance, jaw dropping performances from the frontline!

She's got the hair, the moves, she oozes funk.

When I first heard of her I thought she was just another R n B diva, I couldn't have been more wrong, this girl is funk-ay! A James brown-esque performance complete with 'I'll get my coat I'm leaving, no not really' routine and with elements of prince thrown in for good measure, she left me wanting more. Oh and the band is not bad either.

03:45 in the video sees one of Cee-lo Green's minions deliver him some biscuits...that's Rock'n Roll!




Janelle is also an avid fan of Britain's number 1 rude comic, Viz and moulded her look on Felix and his amazing Underpants. In her early career she would occasionally be seen selling records outside venues emulating her hero.*

Bizarre but equally cool video to this song just cemented the track as one of my very best of 2010.

There are some songs you will always remember the first time you heard them, 'Complete Control' by the Clash is one. I had to pick my wife up from Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 and I was a bit late. I was just going through the tunnel to the terminals when the song came on. I was totally stunned and must have gone into auto pilot (airport - get it?) and I missed my turning so I stopped in a lay by until it had finished. It took me a couple of minutes before I could compose myself to pick my wife up as my head was still in a spin.  I had to tell someone, I tried to tell her about this great song but all I got was a bollocking for being late.

My love affair with the Clash had well and trully started. I had the great pleasure of seeing Jo Strummer with his band the Mescaleros they were supporting The Who. Oh! boy that was a night to remember it took me days to come down. I still have the T-shirt from that night (I won't get fooled again)

This week's guest spot from the delightful Mrs S: I've heard that her 12-egg carbonara has to be tasted to be believed! So I will be placing my order in advance please!!

So ... picture this attractive scene: Jon & I  collapsed on the sofa some considerable time after we should have gone to bed sort-of watching Jools Holland. I had just decided it was time to stop arsing about & actually go to bed when someone new appeared on stage and distracted me (not a tough thing to do.) The someone was a girl with a guitar and to be honest I didn't pay much attention because that was not extraordinary in itself. Still, I stuck around to watch, mostly because I still couldn't be bothered to go to bed.

I listened as one girl with a guitar, a tambourine and an effects pedal created layer upon layer within this amazing song and I was hooked. Actually having just watched it again I'm STILL hooked. That appearance on Jools Holland was her first on TV and obviously since then I've heard this song on the radio a million times and I've seen her do it live with a band but it's never been quite the same. Once the band was added and it got to sounding a bit more "slick" somehow it lost something.

KT Tunstall started out busking and is in my opinion still at her best left to her own devices with as little accompaniment as possible. Proof of this if proof could possibly still be needed:-

THURSDAY I'M IN LOVE! - Nirvana - 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night?'

Thursday I'm in Love..a chance for me to share some of my favourite tunes.

It's only appropriate to do a Nirvana post for the 20th anniversary release of the groundbreaking Nevermind (where did that time go). There are plenty of memorable moments to choose from, turning the volume up to 11 for 'Teen Spirit' at house parties and their legendary rendition of that song on Top of the Pops but I've gone for my personal favourite so bear with me.

This is a haunting song taken from Nirvana's live and unplugged album, unaware that it was originally an old blues song by Leadbelly. Even though the blues legend sounds really gutted, Kurt Cobain's rendition feels more heartfelt. It starts off calmly, though you can start to hear him spitting into the mic before the song ends in an explosion of raw emotion. Brutal.

I was fortunate enough to experience this very scenario a long while back as my girlfriend at the time unexpectedly failed to turn up at a family BBQ. Pretty sure it wasn't anything to do with the promise of my mexican three bean salad, I suspected foul play. Instead of contemplating the impending demise of my relationship, I thought it a brilliant opportunity to use this song in context and play it too her. That'll make her feel guilty when she eventually comes back to explain, I thought. It didn't work as I never got the chance, essential part of ones musical education I say.

Oh go on then....here's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' live on Top of the Pops back in 1991, check out the charts!!! I also bet the TOTP producers were in a bit of a mild panic when Kurt and gang got going.

WEDNESDAY CLUB - Calexico - 'Alone Again Or'


Calexico - 'Alone Again Or' (2004)

'You know that I could be in love with almost everyone' and I just love Calexico and especially this great live cover of the Love classic, Alone again or. Isn't it great when one of your favourite bands covers one of your favourite songs. When the trumpets come in, I go all weak at the knees and have to lie down.

I have also included the the Love version and the Calexico original version at the end. What a treat you are in for!

Joey Burns and John Convertino were backing musicians with Giant Sand and they started a side project, Calexico which took off and surpassed Giant Sands. I just love their music, it could be described as Mexicano Alt Country. It is one of the few groups that all my family love together, no arguments when Calexico is on. A good starting point would be their album 'Feast of Wire'.

WHAT A PERFORMANCE! # 1 - Morrissey - 'Everyday is Like Sunday'

I saw this today and I just had to share it. A beautiful melancholic song wonderfully performed at this years Glastonbury by the king of moping around, Morrissey. I was a late comer to the genius of The Smiths and Morrissey but I remember how powerful this track was in conveying the images he was singing about. With Morrissey's typical lyrical verve, I felt I was there feeling it with him waiting on that bench for the bombs to fall.

I won't buy a Toyota Prius when I go through my inevitable midlife crisis, I'll grab a sleeping bag and some wellies and go to Glastonbury. I've never been.
