Jack White - 'Lazaretto' (2014)

Yeah! The music genius that is Jack white is back! This track has truly knocked my socks off! I was at work last week and fighting with 2 ancient telex printers, drowning in noise and reems of paper when my ears pricked up like a musical meerkat! A colleague of mine must have felt the same because he said "that is great, what is it?!" I said 'God knows, but it sounds like Rage Against the Machine!" He ran over to the radio but it was too late, the title had diappeared. Lucky for me and my amazing ears, I heard them announce it was the brand new title track from Jack white's second solo album due out next month. I'm excited to hear what else he's got in store! PS. Does anyone else think Jack White reminds them of Heath Ledgers depiction of Joker? How cool can you get!

We Are Scientists - 'Make It Easy' (2014)

My album of 2008 was by far and away 'Brain Thrust Mastery' and when Shellhunter and I saw 'Kings Of Leon' in Vegas that year I was pleasantly surprised to see that We Are Scientists were the support... They were really good, better than Messrs. Followill in my opinion. Their follow up album 'Barbara' in 2010 didn't float my boat as much but they seem back on form with their newly released album 'TV En Francais' I've listened to it a couple of times and already I'm liking it a lot. This is the first single off of the album and I can sense a difficult decision come December when I have to choose which track makes it into my #tracksoftheyear

Royal Blood - 'Come On Over' (2014)

Blog and now a firm family favourite, Royal Blood, did their credentials no harm after their aural assault on Jools Holland (22/04/14). It was pretty pulsating stuff, turned up to '11' and everything, with drummer, Ben Thatcher, giving a jaw dropping performance (honourable mention to Mike Kerr on the Bass), inspiring me to maybe pick up the sticks for my midlife crisis (cheaper than a Ferrari). As we eagerly await news of an album, 'Come on Over' is the third release from the Brighton duo. They have performed at SXSW this year and will be on the festival circuit performing at Glastonbury and Reading later, definitely a band to see live. Big ting awaits. 

Unfortunately the performance of 'Come on Over' on Jools Holland wasn't available on video yet (official video has boobs and is a bit saucy)  but you can catch them play 'Little Monster' here.....to see what I mean, a must watch.

Caveman - Shut You Down (2014)

Like an Emperor Palpatine keeping an eye on a young Anakin Skywalker, I've followed Caveman since their 2011 debut CoCo Beware. Heavy on the reverb and a great guitar melody, this is their latest release from their self-titled second album.  How can I describe them? They've been labelled "chamber pop, dreampop, folk with synths, ethereal, echo-laden alt country, guitar-heavy psychedelia and soft prog" - I usually say "They are awesome".

This track Food for Clouds is taken from the new album of the same name by The Brian Jonestown Massacre. 

This is pretty good, it has a 'trippy' 'dubby' feel with a thumping base all the way through. It also has a distinctive brass sound coming through at the end of each verse. Definitely my favourite track this week. Hope you like it.  If you don't, you will find yourself on a slow boat to Guyana.

I can't choose between the 2 so what the 'ell its my birthday i'll do what I want! Here is Everything Fades to White it is just as good if not better.

Jack White - 'Love Interrupted' (2012)

Back in June:  "Dad, we need to get Jack Black's new album "Blunderbuss".  My friend at school said it's great and that I would really like it.  I asked him if it had Meg on it and he said no, it's a solo album not a White Stripes album.  I told him I wasn't sure I'd like it if it wasn't Jack and Meg but he said he thinks I'll really like it and should give it a try. It's a more folky sound than the White Stripes  His favourite tracks are Love Interruption, Poor Boy and Blunderbuss."

My eldest was not quite 7 then. This wasn't meant to happen yet - getting new music tips from my own child. I'd already enlisted my two brothers as cultural attaches when I first became a dad to make sure I was kept up to date with new musical happenings. My brothers, NME TV (during the very early morning start years before CBeebies came on at 6) and more recently Tune Doctor have been keeping me updated very well both with what's new - and great stuff I might have missed.  I've made no secret of my musical indoctrination programme for the kids, based on my own lack of exposure to a lot of classic pop/rock music as a child. I'd not heard any Hendrix until I was pretty much 17.  The Beatles, Stones, Bowie - no exposure other than the most obvious tracks. Led Zep? Not even a sniff.  So it should come as no surprise that both kids have been developing their quite different musical tastes based on what they've heard at home.

Meg? Nice name, I like it. 

Blunderbuss became a 7th birthday present for my daughter.  And watching her with the CD liner notes (complete with lyrics!  So disappointing when it's just a couple of arty shots of the band) listening to it over and over, completely absorbed and learning the words to all the songs reminds me so much of the start of my musical discovery phase in my early teens.  I'm sure we'll go through plenty of teen pop along the way but the groundwork has been laid.

'Absolute Zero' - Faith No More
Everyone needs a bit of 'riffage' once in awhile and this definitely fit the bill. I was listening to this whilst out running and as well as an angry face, I also achieved a personal best. Faith No More, I raise the goblet of rawk to you!

'Used to be a Cop' - Drive By Truckers
Great atmospheric Alt-Country ballad that paints a bleak picture of a cop on the edge.

'Two Against One' feat Jack White - Danger Mouse and Daniel Luppi
Producer Danger Mouse comes up trumps again, collaborating with Italian film composer Daniel Lippi and Jack White to good melodic effect.

'Starting Over' - Jehst

Jehst is one of my favourite UK hip hop artist and if this comeback single (after 6 years) is anything to go by then his album should be one to look foward to.

'Crave You' feat Giselle - Flight Facilities
Girl finds a guy's 'treat'em mean, keep'em keen' technique a tad frustrating. A snappy beat and soothing synths, keeps this dance track bubbling along very nicely indeed.

'Painted Eyes' - Hercules and Love Affair
A great slice of 'camp' NY disco!

'One Less Day' Feat G-Shaft - DaM Funk
80's style sleaze funk. Perhaps what Alexander O'Neal would have sounded like if he was slightly naughtier.

'Ways to an End' - Mirrors
Another 80's influenced track. Synth-pop of an OMDesque variety, which is fine with me!

'DJama' - Donso
Went to see Seun Kuti last month and these guys were supporting, I immediately bought the CD. A French/Malian collaboration fusing electronica and traditional African rhythms.

'Brown Skin Lady' - Black Star
Saw the De La Soul, Black Star, Rakim concert this month and I forgot how good these guys are. This is a great soulful Hip-Hop track from arguably two of the best MC's in the game.
