London Scouser's - Best 5 of 2014

2014 - Another great year of music

It took me a long time to choose my favourite 5, and they aren't in any particular order, but here goes

We Are Scientists - 'What You Do Best'

We Are Scientists are a band I've liked since first hearing 'The Great Escape' and their 2008 release 'Brain Thrust Mastery' was my album of the year. I'll admit that I haven't given this years offering 'TV en Francais' as much earplay but nevertheless I was immediately attracted to this song. For me it has the best lyrics I've heard in a long while "When I said that you were something else, I didn't mean it as a compliment". Every time I hear them a smile forms. One of life's simple pleasures.

Woods - 'Moving To The Left'

My second choice reminds me of the sixties and where their song 'With Light And With Love' which was my TOTW earlier this year sounded like 'The Byrds' this is very 'Beatles' like in my opinion. The whole album is great but this was by far my favourite track on it.

Foo Fighters - 'Something From Nothing'

Welcome back Mr Grohl and friends, whilst I was disappointed with having only 8 tracks on their latest album 'Sonic Highways' I was definitely not unhappy with what I heard. It's a great rock album which has had maybe a dozen plays already and is destined for many more I'm sure.

Belle And Sebastian - 'The Party Line'

Ahhhh, Belle And Sebastian... Just the mention of the name brings back so many great memories for me. Possibly my favourite was many years back... I was on holiday with Shellhunter in Spain visiting Old Pa and Ma. I was sat around the pool listening on my huge brick of an original iPod to a B&S compilation I'd put together, I can't remember which specific song it was but that's not important. I'm a shade rather than sun bather and the umbrella that had been doing it's duty had the audacity to stay still when then sun was moving and as a result I was starting to get hot. I noticed Old Pa had got up out of the corner of my eye. It was then that I uttered the immortal lines that will be with me until my last days on earth I'm sure... "I don't mean this in a lazy way, but...' almost immediately Old Pa's comeback was something along the lines of "Not in a lazy way, my arse!!" He didn't let me add the rest of my request, which was a simple '...could you please move the umbrella" this seemed a perfectly reasonable request to me'
Maybe you had to be there, but it still makes me chuckle to think of that.

Ume - 'Black Stone'

Now for my final choice it was a toughie, as earlier this year I went through my 'Austin Phase' and discovered a plethora of bands that were new to me, some of which weren't from this year alas. I plumped for this with it's amazing riffage. 2014 has been a great year for ''Ooh-may' (as they are pronounced) which saw the band perform on stage in London as part of the 'British Summer Time' gig on the same stage as Black Sabbath, Motorhead & Soundgarden. As well as lead singer and guitarist Lauren Larson taking part in 'Acoustic-4-A-Cure' along with  Billie Joe Armstrong, Sammy Hagar, James Hetfield, Scott Mathews, Pat Monahan, Joe Satriani, Nancy Wilson, not bad company to keep. I think they are destined for greatness.

Those were my top 5, and this below is my top 20, check it out via our Spotify playlist and enjoy

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 26/10/14 - Foo Fighters, Dennis Bovell, The 2 Bears, Twilight Sad

Four tracks that were like an extra hour in bed....

Old Pa's Corner :-
Twilight Sad - 'Last January' (2014)

Here is a track by Scottish band The Twilight Sad and is from their new album released tomorrow and is called Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave (2014). It is rather good, I love that little hint of Scottish twang and that little hint of darkness too.

London Scouser:-
Foo Fighters - 'Something From Nothing' (2014)

Last week Shellhunter asked me if I'd heard the new one by the Foo's which she described as 'a bit of a slow one, but probably a grower' I hadn't but looked into it. It starts a little slowly, but soon builds up into a raucous riff-tastic rock record... Really. This is the first release from their long awaited (certainly by me) new album 'Sonic Highways' which is out in November. I've been a fan since the beginning and on the strength of this I think 'I'll Stick Around'.

Shell Hunter:-
The 2 Bears - 'See You' (2014)

This track has everything I like about The 2 Bears in it: the toe tapping synths, the playful lyrics and that low signature bear voice. Some may say its too much of a novelty style but poo to them I say! Dance music should be fun and different, and besisdes, if it makes your head bob and foot tap then boogie away! This track is from their new album The Night Is Young which was out in September. They released Angel from it already but I hope they follow it up with this healthy dose of pop-rave-dance. Its Grrrrrrrrrrrreat!

Flycasual:-
Dennis Bovell - 'Aye Go Mila Dubwize' (2014)

This was a bonus track from the Nov/Dec Songlines sampler CD and what a cracker it is. Not only is it a Dennis Bovell Dub rework but he's done the business on a track from one of my favourite albums of last year, Samba Toure's, Albala. It was like putting on an old coat and finding a tenner in one pocket, checking the other pocket and finding a half eaten sausage roll, result! Or something along those lines. Anyway it's taken from Glitterbeat's Dubs and versions Vol.1...win....win.

Goodness from Glitterbeat Records here....

COVER NERD! - Foo Fighters - 'Drive Me Wild'

By now you may have noticed I love a good cover, and this time I get to feature one of my favourite bands, so it's a win-win. If you have a favourite cover, please contact us and tell us why by clicking here

Foo Fighters - Drive Me Wild (1997)

When I was still at school I begged my parents to let me get a paper round cos I wanted to earn some money. There were so many records I wanted to buy and also games for my amazingly sophisticated super computer (ZX Spectrum +). But being the dopey accident prone kid I was there was no way they would let me go out that early. Eventually they came to a compromise and I was allowed to deliver a free paper, The Hounslow Recorder. I had to deliver it to two nearby streets, a total of 210 papers, and my fee for this ??? A paltry 1p per paper... I'm sure that was discrimination, but initially I was ecstatic.
After a few weeks however the novelty was slowly wearing off and I couldn't be arsed lugging that much weight around for such little return. In hindsight I should have thought of a better plan for dumping them, perhaps in the wasteland next to where we lived or something similar. But no, I went for the lazy/stupid option of "hiding" them in our shed. This worked perfectly for 3 weeks until my mum decided to go into the shed, I mean how dare she. That was my hiding place.
After receiving my punishment, which was to have my TV confiscated for a month, I also had to continue delivering the papers. The only difference being that my mum now drove me to the streets and helped me deliver half of them. Not so bad in the end methinks.

Does my grin drive you wild baby ??

What has this got to do with the song I hear you ask, well I'm getting there.
My brother worked for an air freight company and they used shredded newspaper to help with the packaging of certain items, he spoke to his boss and took 630 papers off my hands. I got £10.00 for the papers too, so in the end I came out financially on top !!!
My brothers boss was a pretty flamboyant guy, always bragging about his expensive cars and the like. He was big into his music and made a C90 tape for my brother with Mel & Kim's 'FLM' on one side and Vanity Six's self titled album on the other. I remember listening to the album and loving the naughty lyrics on some of the tracks. I still have the cassette, but unfortunately I don't possess a tape player anymore !!

I first heard the Foo Fighters version on a compilation CD called 'Sound As A Pound' on Parlophone records. Instantly loving it, I've since found out it was recorded in the same session that they did Baker Street in at BBC Maida Vale Studios in 1997 which is possibly one my favourite all time covers.

NERD ALERT! - Dave Grohl performed all instruments for their debut album, then formed the band in order to tour.

Unfortunately, I can't find a version of it on Spotify, but you can still subscribe to my Spotify playlist by clicking here

GIVE ME A GUITAR! - Foo Fighters - All My Life (Live on Jools Holland)

Give me a guitar!! Guaranteed to make your ears bleed! Grrr!

Foo Fighters - All My Life (live on Jool Holland 2002)

Last week I watched a retrospective Jools Holland where various celebrities were recollecting their favourite moments. Amongst all the classic acts notably, Radiohead, Johnny Cash and KT Tunstall (featured here), this performance stood out by far. I'm not a huge fan of the Foo Fighters, especially in more recent times but this reaffirmed why I did like them in the first place. Jo Wiley, described being blown away by this performance as saying it was one of the loudest things she has ever heard, never mind '11', this was turned up to 12!

Up to 12!
More importantly, it has the approval of my 3 year old son, who for some reason, has a serious penchant for rock music, the louder the better, perhaps not ready for the likes of Cradle of Filth or Cannibal Corpse but for the moment this certainly fit the bill.

GUEST SPOT'S Best Of 2011 part 3

We did not want this site to be all about us, we wanted people to contribute their musical experiences, favourite tunes, musical memories, legendary gigs etc and as a result we have compiled a number of excellent posts which have enhanced our site and our music collection. It's with great thanks to you guys for putting in the time and effort to write and share these experiences with us. Thanks again for contributing for the best of 2011 post too. Remember, feel free to submit any contributions at any time, they are always welcome and we enjoy them greatly.

Jon:-
Husband, father and part time Jedi trainer to his two daughters, Jon has contributed and eclectic mix of guest spots which you can check out here.... (Dub War, Steve Earle and Kings of Convenience)
Bon Iver - 'Holocene'
I originally dismissed Justin Vernon prematurely before I'd really given him much of a listen. However, Peter Gabriel's "Scratch My Back Album" - covers of a pretty eclectic mix of songs with an amazing orchestral arrangement and exposed vocals introduced me to his track "Flume". I immediately sought out the original from the "For Emma, Forever Ago" album and loved it. "Holocene" off the current album the self titled "Bon Iver" has been a regular on my playlist. It's just a beautiful track and you can completely immerse yourself in the vocals.

Peter Gabriel - 'Wallflower'
Continuing the Peter Gabriel vibe (as I very often do), Kate,my brother Aidan and I saw him touring the "Scratch My Back" album at the O2 in 2010. In the second part of the show he played some of his own tracks - not all of them obvious choices for an orchestral re-imagining but pretty much all of them worked really well. I was particularly pleased to hear a number of tracks off his 1982 release "Peter Gabriel 4" / "Security" which is probably my all time favourite album of his. These tracks have been released in 2011 as a live DVD/Bluray and album, titled "New Blood". "Wallflower",  about the mistreatment of political prisoners is one of the stand out tracks on the new album, possibly even more powerful with the orchestral backing than the original.

OK Go - 'All Is Not Lost'
Not an obvious choice I admit, but OK Go really do it for me. Their ever-inventive videos (from the now legendary and much imitated treadmill video for "Here It Goes Again" to the "Incredible Machine" style video for "This Too Shall Pass") combined with catchy indie-pop/rock songs are a joy to watch. Even my 2 daughters (aged 6 and 4) now get excited when I tell them there's a new OK Go video, although that could be down to the cultural brainwashing programme. They both have their favourites - Eva's is "White Knuckles" (with the dogs) and Meg's is the ghillie-suited marching band version of the video for "This Too Shall Pass". Seek them out on YouTube - you will not be disappointed. This track, "All Is Not Lost" is best viewed in the Google Chrome browser as it takes advantage of some nifty Chrome features during the song to great effect, click here to see!!

Sophie:-
Er' indoors has supported and put up with me and this blog so a big thank you goes to her. She always has an ear for a tune and the ability to surprise a few gems of her own over the years...Check out her guest spots here...(Roddy Frame and Degrees in Motion)
SBTRKT - 'Pharaohs' Feat Roses Gabor
Given that 2011 was the worst Summer in ages, this song transported me to sunnier climes and to younger, funkier times.

Adele - 'Someone Like You'
Adele’s performance of this song at The Brits is all you need to know – incredible!

Maroon 5 - 'Moves Like Jagger'
I have detested every Maroon 5 song before this but I just couldn’t help myself this time! Maybe it’s the fact that Christina has a hand in it or just that it makes you want to dance – either way, a great pop song.

Russ:-
He has kept the peace in the Falklands (Verve guest spot) and comes out with the 'Best Northern Slang' but he also has 3 belters for you to enjoy!
Foo Fighters - 'Rope'
At last back to the food I love!!

Arctic Monkeys- 'Don't Sit Down'
Always heed the warnings, it's dangerous!!

Miles Kane - Come Closer
Opened my eyes to a newer artist style and I like it!

Gavin:-
Biltong Man is quite partial to a bit of Swiss cheese as his guest spot revealed (Yello) but put these choices on yo' crackers!!
Hurts – 'Sunday'
Brilliant and can’t believe they are not bigger than they are. Apart from Man Utd these guys are the best thing out of Manchester in recent years.

Christina Perri – 'Arms'
New sound, new voice and full of tattoos, a voice that can make you feel all sorts of emotions in one album. It's in my car CD at the mo.

Linkin Park – 'Iridesent'
Picked up a ticket off eBay for this concert for £18.90 a couple of days before the show. Sat in the front of the O2 and heard this song for the first time then … blew me away hearing it live.

GIVE ME A GUITAR!! Foo Fighters - Everlong

Foo Fighters - Everlong (1997)
Sometimes, by just listening to the first 5 seconds of a song can improve your day - 'Everlong' does this every time for me - it puts a smile on my grumpy chops! It works on all levels, the acoustic version gives it a different edge, but the Studio version is like a Rollercoaster for your ears - the slow start, driving guitars & drums and the perfect sing-a-long chorus takes you on a musical trip with its highs & lows....can songs get any better? Possibly, but for me this is top 3 of all time!

"Guaranteed to put a smile on your face!"
