Wild Beasts - Sweet Spot (2014)


"Sweet Spot" is the latest release from Wild Beasts, which comes from their latest LP Present Tense. It's bonkers to think this is their fourth LP, as it only seems like yesterday that they appeared on the scene. The guitar melody is great, then when the synth kicks in you'll think you are in Tron. If you don't like it straight away, give it a few goes, it is infectious.

Coldplay - 'Midnight' (2014)

You love to hate them, you hate to love them blah blah blah. That doesn't matter to me, if I like the sound of it then I don't care who it is. The other morning I was driving to work on an early at stupid o'clock (4am) when the XFM DJ revealed that Coldplay has posted a new track on their website but no other info about where it was from or what for. I wasn't really concentrating at the time, just watching road. By the end of it, I felt all warm and fuzzy. It was such a different and chilled out song, I really enjoyed it! When I got to work ended up hearing it 3 times before 7am and even on 2 different radio stations. By then I was hooked. Give it a go, it's worth it.

With a name like that they just had to be heard. I can't stop playing this, it gets a little bit addictive. I am really interested now to hear the full album which incidentally is well under 30 mins long. The album is  Say Yes To Love (2014). I am pretty pleased I cum by this track and I hope this little taster moistens you ear buds.

Dirtmusic - 'Red Dust' Feat Samba Toure (2014)

Samba Toure's album, Albala, was one of my favourite albums of last year, sombre and poignant, it was the Desert Blues at it's very best (read about it here). So naturally I was excited when I heard he features in Dirtmusic's forthcoming fourth album, Lion City. Aussie/US band Dirtmusic were originally formed as a Roots/Folk band but started recording in Mali after meeting another Desert Blues favourite of mine, Tamikrest at the annual 'Festival Du Desert'. Collaborating regularly with local musicians, they subtly incorporate their 'Western' influences with the bamboozling brilliant Bamako talent. Samba Toure lends his vocals to the atmospheric 'Red Dust', a reflective dub journey through a hurting Mali.

St Vincent - 'Digital Witness'

I first heard of St Vincent (AKA Annie Clark) when I downloaded a playlist a few years back. Amongst the 100 or so tracks was a song called 'Sleep All Summer' which was a collaboration between one The National & St Vincent. As a big fan of the former I immediately honed in on the track and wasn't disappointed, so much so that I put the song on the latest CD compilation that Shell Hunter and I had compiled.
Fast forward to 2014 and the release of her eponymous 4th album. Digital Witness is the second release from the album and has a dancy feel to it which reminds me a little of 'LaRoux' I've listened to the album a couple of times and on the strength of these 2 listens I will be checking out her back catalogue for sure.

Elbow - 'Fly Boy Blue / Lunette' (2014)

This week I was umming and ahhing over what would be my track when I received a message on my phone via spotify. It told me that a new track by Elbow was available so I clicked on the link and was pleased to hear that they are still capable of knocking out a great song. Guy Garvey's breathy vocals are back with aplomb and I can't wait til March 10th when their new album ' The Take Off And Landing Of Everything' touches down.

Wild Beasts - Wanderlust (2013)

 

It was nice to hear this taster from the Wild Beast's new album Present Tense (2014). I expected great things from them after hearing their album  Two Dancers (2009) the track  All the King's Men (2009) was in my tracks of the year for 2009. I cannot believe that was 5 years ago and that would make me 5 years retired. Now that is what I call scary.

In between. they have had another album out. Smother (2011) which i seemed to have missed. Looks like 2 for the price of one for me. Catch up here we come.

Say Yes Dog - 'A Friend' (2013)

I'm very impressed by the debut four track EP, A Friend, by the Dutch based Electro-Pop trio Say Yes Dog (one member is a Luxembourger the other two are German), which was out Dec 9th last year. Every one's a winner, with elements of Hot Chip and The Whitest Boy Alive, what's not to like, take the infectious, 'A Friend' for evidence. I'm pretty certain we'll be hearing more from these guys. Walkies!?

James Vincent McMorrow - 'Cavalier' (2013)

James Vincent McMorrow wandered into the Singer/Songwriter scene in 2011 with his fantastic debut album "Early In The Morning" and completely blew me away. He released the "We Don't Eat" E.P. in 2012 but since then he's been a bit quiet. He has just released Post Tropical which features the stunning 'Cavalier'.  For those expecting another singer/songwriter, guitar based album will be a little disappointed as he's gone all James Blake.  Heavy on the Electronica and with a bucket full of Soul.  This track is worth buying the album for alone! It's a Heartbreaker!

Shell Hunter:-

Breton - 'Envy' (2013)

The mad scientists are back with this single released at the back end of last year and was following on from 'Got Well Soon' which I also featured on TOTW. It's got a completely different feel to the electronica for zombies I described there. Positively bouncey and hooray, steel drums! I'm really looking forward to their new album War Room Stories from Cut Tooth/Believe Recordings out on 3rd February. I read that the guys even employed the services of the 44 piece Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra who appear on 5 tracks throughout the album, including this one. Time for another listen, its like having a good mood on tap!

It's always an unenviable task, trying to streamline your favourite songs into a playlist, but 5, outrageous! Oh the sleepless nights, who gets left behind?? I felt like I was the chopper pilot in the scene in Platoon where Willem Defoe's, Elias gets left behind.

Yeah, OK anyway, 2011 has been a great year for music but more so since the creation of this blog. One of the points of this blog was to find out what my friends/family were listening to and if they had any anecdotes about the songs as to why they liked them. I don't get to see them as often as I'd like to and like SFW said in his intro, "recreate the listening sessions of the past". So what better way than to conceive a blog where you can do just that!! As a result of the Guest Spots and my fellow contributors, who in turn have different tastes to mine, it has been a bumper crop! So a huge thanks to all of you!


Little Dragon - 'Ritual Union'
My favourite song, album and band/artist of the year for me, their Lo-Fi Electronica ticking all the right boxes, prompting me to get hold of their back catalogue. Ritual Union's a fabulous track (featured here), it's flavour encapsulated the summer for me, great voice and complete with synth sax break (there's not enough sax at the moment). Little Dragon's collaborations this year were exceptional too, including 'Wildfire' with SBTRKT (featured here too) and this beautiful piece, 'Scale it Back' with DJ Shadow.

Beastie Boys - 'Make Some Noise'
"oh my god just look at me grandpa been rapping' since 83". Great back to form old skool flashback from the Beasties with their silly witty rhymes and fresh beats. Trademark outstanding video too, with Hollywood cameos aplenty and if you have a spare 29:55 minutes, check the full video here....

Wild Beasts - 'Reach A Bit Further'
Fabulous vocals and melody, with happy memories of a perfect day spent on the beach with my wife and my little boy.

The Horrors - 'Still Life'
Epic retro 80's stomp fest, I can just picture a Miami Vice cut scene with a jilted Don Johnson tearing shit up around Miami. Would definitely feature on the soundtrack to the remake of The Breakfast Club.

Tinarwiren - 'Tenere Taqqim Tossam'
Unfortunately they didn't take up my offer of a cup of tea at my house (what??) when they were touring last month so I went to see them instead and I was not disappointed. Top, top tune from the desert rebel rockers, The Clash, Santana and Hendrix rolled into one (erm, if they were all Bedouins).

Wild Beasts - 'Reach a bit Further' (2011)

Wild Beasts - Reach A Bit Further by DominoRecordCo

Angry apes favourite, Wild Beasts have been on heavy rotation in the flycasual household for a couple of months now. 'Smother' is such a consistently good album that it's been very hard to pinpoint an individual track as my favourite. Then after driving home one sunny afternoon from a near perfect day at the beach, this song came through. Whether it's the beat, melody, the sand in my ears or Hayden Thorpe's fabulous voice delivering an infectious chorus, it's all good. It's a short tune which leaves you wanting more.

Sfw was unavailable for comment. CIA drones tracking him earlier, reported seeing him stagger out of the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff after the Welsh rugby team gave the Argentinian boys a good seeing to. They couldn't get a clear shot for an air strike and lost him. He's probably off singing somewhere.

Errol Linton - Mama Said (2011)

I was browsing the other day (like you do) and came across this guy Errol Linton, as I never heard of him before I sampled a few of the tracks on his album 'Mama said' and the title track just blew me away. It was just like an old blues track from way back, mouth harp and all. There was just so much energy, I did not hesitate and had to buy it right away.

The 'Busking Brixton Bluesman' is apparently a bit of a legend in 'underground circles', he quite literally plays in the London Underground with his one man band. Can't wait to hear the rest of his album. Stardom awaits Errol.
