TRACKS OF THE WEEK 22/03/15 - Blur, Muse, Tobias Jesso Jr, Laura Marling, Ryley Walker

Five tracks to spring head first into...

Shell Hunter:-
Blur - 'Go Out' (2015)

First of all, thank you to all who sent their best wishes for Ripley's arrival on Old Pa's Calexico post last week! Its been both the longest and shortest week ever. Living our lives in 3 hour bursts between feeds, not knowing what day it is or even caring, eating when we are hungry no matter if its 2am and feeling elation to frustration in half a second all come part and parcel with being a new parent. But we've reached our first milestone, a week! Our next big event is tomorrow where we will do the title of the latest single from Blur, Go Out. We are off to register her birth! Go Out is the first single to be released since 2003 and its like they have picked up where they dropped off. It couldn't be more Blur if it tried! The guys are older, wiser and it can only spell great things to come from new album The Magic Whip, due on April 27th. This is one happy Blur fan right here.

London Scouser:-
Muse - 'Psycho' (2015)

Shell Hunter was very much otherwise engaged as I wrote this a week ago, as she was in labour with our first child. In the background was our playlist of tracks to take her mind off of the pain from the contractions, I remembered that Muse has a track called 'New Born' so I searched for them on Spotify and was pleased to see they had a new track... It should probably come with a government warning, not to include on baby playlists, but regardless I bloody love it. Its got a trademark Muse riffage but sounds to me like the one that got away from Marilyn Manson. I can't wait for their new album based on this also!

Old Pa's Corner :-
Ryley Walker - Sweet Satisfaction (2015)

I have heard two tracks from the album Primrose Green (2015) the new album by Ryley Walker and I am really impressed. Some of the influences that he is being associated with is rather impressive, but I would say entirely justified. How about Van Morrison, Tim Buckley, Bert Jansch and Pentangle.

This really excellent stuff. I await with great anticipation for the complete album out at the end of the month.

Flycasual:-
Tobias Jesso Jr. - 'How Could You Babe' (2015)

Vancouver's Tobias Jesso Jr almost gave up music a few years back after a luckless spell in LA (the song, Hollywood takes an extra significance) and it's to everyone's benefit that he didn't. His debut album, Goon, was released earlier this month and contains a spectacular array of Lennon-esque songs on love and heartbreak. 'How Could You Girl', is my current weapon of choice to give my heart a kicking.

SFW:-
Laura Marling - False Hope (2015)

I am quite enjoying Laura Marling's heavier vibe, the track features on her new album, short movie, which is singers fifth album in seven years. She produced the album herself, which probably explains the change of direction. Like a hybrid of PJ Harvey meets Pearl Jam, the Hampshire born singer has now returned to England (after spending quite a bit of time in the US) and her new album is a clear reflection of that.

Eddie Berman and Laura Marling - Dancing In The Dark

TUESDAY BLUES

Do you like Singer/Songwriters, or do you have a unhealthy affection to the sadness, if so you may have a case of the Tuesday Blues!

..if you see Courtney Cox give her a slap...

Eddie Berman with Laura Marling - Dancing In The Dark (2013)

My memory is getting bad.  I heard this a few months ago and was blown away, but I sadly forgot to share it. So when I saw the winner of the voice performing this exact version I needed to find it and reclaim it for Eddie & Laura.

I've posted Laura Marling tracks in the past, her talent needs to be seen to be believed - on this she's not even trying - it looks like she is thinking about her afternoon tea. She's the musical equivalent of George Best, completely effortless, sorry, I'm gushing.  As for Eddie, he's pretty rad, he has a beard and long nails. :-)

Anyway, it captures the beauty of Springsteen's tale of desperation and wanting to escape a shitty town perfectly. It also hit a nerve and triggered a number of memories from my youth. Feeling trapped living in a small Welsh mining town, wanting to escape and knowing there are better things out there....

TRACKS OF THE WEEK - 24/03/13 - Depeche Mode, Jim James, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Laura Marling, Woodkid

Five Tracks that were well within budget this week...

Old Pa's Corner:-
Jim James - A New Life (2013)

This fabulous track is from Jim James's (My Morning Jacket) new solo album  Regions of Light and Sound of God (2013). It really is a cracking album and there are other highlights, try State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U) the first track on the album, that is a bit special too.

This song highlights the vocal range of Mr Jones and it builds up to a stunning climax that you will want to hear again, right away. It's that good.  Up there with the best tracks of the year for Old Pa. I think I like too much?

The album shines class and a must listen to.

Sfw:-
Laura Marling - 'Where Can I Go?' (2013)

British songstress Laura Marling has recently unveiled Where Can I Go?, which will feature on her fourth Album Once I Was An Eagle. It has been produced by long time collaborator/producer Ethan Johns and is out in May. I just think this girl can do no wrong. She's a real talent that gets better and better with age.... oh and she's only 23! Scary!

Flycasual:-
Depeche Mode - 'Heaven' (2013)

I don't know why I've kept putting off the new Depeche Mode single, because it's brilliant. It has finally broken me down and it is everything I love about Depeche Mode, thought provoking, dark and brooding. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that I'm a huge fan of the electro pioneers (I'd say they've influenced many of my favourite acts on the darker end of the spectrum, Nine Inch Nails, Massive Attack) but I always approach a new release with apprehension in fear that it may be, well, rubbish. Sometimes their music can be too melodramatic, I was never a big fan of 'In Your Room' or 'Walking in my Shoes' from Songs of Faith and Devotion for example (which is tantamount to heresy for many DM fans) but that probably says more about my own neurosis than anything else. Nevertheless you're always guaranteed at least a few gems, 'Heaven' being one and as a result I'm very much looking forward to the new album, Delta Machine out March 26th.

Shell Hunter:-
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 'Sacrilege' (2013)

As soon as I heard Karen O's signature rock scream on this latest single from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it made me think back to London Scouser's controversial statement about women lead singers in rock being naff. How wrong could you be, in fact you could say that was sacrilege(you saw that one coming surely)! I think if I could sing, I'd like to sound like Karen O, she can sound soft and purr like in the intro to this track, then kick some ass with her sexy shout! Its almost like a good and bad Karen O are arguing with each other! This song is a real grower with it's Pixies style bass and gospel choir finale.  I look forward to hearing their new album Mosquito which will be out on April 16th, but sadly I wont be able to see them live at the Alexandra Palace on May 4th unless I am airlifted by a helicopter from Camberley. Me and the Ally Pally have got history (see why here)!

London Scouser:-
Woodkid - 'The Golden Age'

I recently bit the bullet and changed from an iPhone to a new non Apple phone. I now have the Nexus 4, and with it I use Google Play... Bear with me this does go somewhere !! Every week they give away a free song to be downloaded. I got this track a week or so ago but only listened to it a few days ago. Its got an almost Coldplay vibe to it, and is a little haunting to me. I don't really know much about the singer other than he is better known as Yoann Lemoine, and that he has directed a few music videos including Lana Del Rey's 'Born To Die'.

TUESDAY BLUES!! Ethan Johns - Whip Poor Will

Do you like Singer/Songwriters, or do you have a unhealthy affection to the sadness, if so you may have a case of the Tuesday Blues!

Ethan Johns Whip Poor Will,

Ethan Johns - Whip Poor Will
Is there anything that this man cannot do? Over the last 15 years he has produced, mixed and played on a plethora of albums that include Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne, Kings Of Leon, Counting Crows, Laura Marling (the list goes on) and is part of a musical dynasty that have worked on some of the most revered albums of the last 50 years.  Glyn Johns (father) has produced albums for artists such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Who (etc) and Andy Johns (uncle) has produced for Led Zeppelins, Rolling Stones and Free. (the list goes on and on)

He's a musical hero of mine and I'm gutted that I missed his recent tour.  But then again is it a good idea to meet your heroes?  A previous time I met one of my favourite Singer/Songwriters, all I could say when asked what I thought of their performance was, "Tidy".  Who the hell says "Tidy?"

Whip Poor Will features on his new solo album If Not Now Then When.

TUESDAY BLUES!! Neil Young/Laura Marling - The Needle and the Damage Done

Neil Young - The Needle and the Damage Done

1993 MTV Unplugged / Harvest

This MTV performance was my introduction to Neil Young and at first I was oblivious to the subject matter. It originally featured on the 1972 album 'Harvest' and it "describes the descent into heroin addiction of musicians he knew" and became a bit of an anthem after Kurt Cobain died.

Fortunately & Naively for me, I'd spent a lot my youth in a safe and secluded expat compound in Saudi Arabia and drugs was something that only happened in the movies. When I returned to the UK I was shocked to find that a school friend ended up living this life and was sadly taken by the "needle and the damage (was) done".

I still adore the song and also enjoy the many cover versions - one notable cover has been done by Laura Marling.

GUEST SPOT'S Best Of 2011 part 1

We did not want this site to be all about us, we wanted people to contribute their musical experiences, favourite tunes, musical memories, legendary gigs etc and as a result we have compiled a number of excellent posts which have enhanced our site and our music collection. It's with great thanks to you guys for putting in the time and effort to write and share these experiences with us. Thanks again for contributing for the best of 2011 post too. Remember, feel free to submit any contributions at any time, they are always welcome and we enjoy them greatly.

Singing Bear:-
Singing Bear is a self confessed old school music lover who runs a blog which all of us here at TuneDr follow. Grownupbackwards is a real treasure trove of forgotten gems, classics and rarities, so go and check it out. Here are 3 of SB's best.

Low - 'Try to Sleep'
'Try To Sleep' is the opening track on Low's excellent album, C'Mon. These Minnesotan 'slow-core' merchants have been around for a while now but it's taken me until this year to really take note of their rather wonderful stripped-down sound. I love their harmonies and insistent guitar work, which, over the course of an album, can take you on a journey to places where you feel, at once, at home, if somewhat uneasy. Sometimes, life just has to get slow.

Laura Marling - 'Don't Ask Me Why'
'Don't Ask Me Why' by Laura Marling is from her beautiful album, A Creature I Don't Know. I has guilty of avoiding Ms, Marling for far too long, having been put off royally by her connections with Mumford and Sons and Noah and The Whale. Should we judge people by the company they keep? Perhaps there are times when we should look beyond that because in the case of Laura Marling, I think she out-grew that gang some time ago. So, I eventually opened my ears and heard all this fine music from one so very young. All three of her albums are very good indeed but one gets the sense of real maturity on A Creature I Don't Know, which, at times, leaves you breathless with its melodic and lyrical invention. She's going to get even better, I'm sure.

Tom Waits - 'Hell Broke Luce'
One of my all-time favourite artists came back to us this year as Tom Waits released his new album, Bad As Me. In certain respects it must be said that what you get on Bad As Me is what one would expect from old Tom - some demented howling at the moon with a little nod to his jazz-bo, beatnik past thrown in for good measure, but that's no reason for complaint: the quality of the songs is top-notch. There aren't many artists of Tom's vintage still regularly creating such vital music. It's good to have him back. There's a host of great things on Bad As Me but I've chosen 'Hell Broke Luce', which is Tom's take on the US war machine and some of its more recent activities. Wild and hard-hitting.

Stuart:-
Stuart is a man of little words and wanted the music to do the talking instead. Have a look at his Mother Love Bone post, where he takes you back to a simpler time where you caressed your records.

Bombay Bicycle Club -'What You Want'

The Vaccines - 'All In White'

Chapel Club - 'Blind'

Emma Bazeley:-
Emma Bazeley, introduced me to White Denim this year and her excellent review of a She Keeps Bees gig compelled me to investigate further.

She Keeps Bees - 'Vulture'
The drumming and compilation just get me.

Twin Shadow - 'Slow'
I discovered them this year and love the 80s feel and George's voice.

Peaches - 'Kick It' Featuring Iggy Pop
I love this just as much for the zombie video and the fact Peaches and Iggy refuse to grow old gracefully!

TRACKS OF THE WEEK 18/09/11

A three pronged folk attack for the tracks of the week. Do you have any tracks to assault us with?

Old Pa's Corner:-
Richmond Fontaine - 'Lost in Trees' (2011)

I have followed RF since their 'Post to Wire' album a few years back and was pleased to find they have a new album release 'The High Country'. RF are an 'Americana' band and tell of dark stories of love, regret and pain. Just up our street, stuff we can identify with.

This track is about a trip to the woods which goes horribly wrong, one too many I suppose, we have all been there of course, to that dark place in the woods. Haven't we??

This is a fast paced 'rocker' with fast paced drumming, an adrenalin rush, I hope you like it? I do!

Flycasual:-

Laura Marling - 'Sophia' (2011)

I've just spent the last week catching the last of the summer's rays in the south west of France (yes it was very nice thank you), with my wife, Sophie. Whilst we were there it was our anniversary (again thank you) and as the more romantic of the two, I thought it would be nice to dedicate a song to her. Despite my wife pointing out that it was the wrong name and a song about relationship issues, we had a nice evening out and it was eventually thankfully received. Anyway what's a rogue 'a' between husband and wife.

I've never really been into Laura Marling, probably as it generally isn't the sort of thing I go for but I heard this song a few weeks back and I thought it a sweet song. After a few listens it's all but sweet, I was also captivated by her voice, the melody and loved how it builds up to a crescendo. A fabulous song now cemented by the nauseating romance story in the south of France.

Sfw:-
Ben Howard - Keep Your Head Up (2011)
I've been listening to this all week and it's just impossible to shake off.  I hate saying the "...he sounds like.." phrase as it can pigeon hole someone - i.e. if I say he sounds like "jose gonzalez" you may be happy, if I say "Mumford and Sons" you may be not....either way there's elements of both.  Ben Howard is part of the Communion Records 'gang' (Mumford & Sons, Johnny Flynn, Benjamin Francis Leftwich...) and this is his new single and is on his new Album - it's good stuff!
