Voice Of The Beehive - I Think I Love You (1991)

When the horrific events last Monday of the bombs in Boston first came on the news, I wanted to know why. A few days later the explosion happened in Waco, I was sitting at the dinner table with Old Pa & Ma and Shell Hunter and we wondered if they were A connected & B something relating to the Waco disaster from 1993. They were almost 20 years apart to the day. Thankfully they've caught the guys responsible for Boston and it seems that the incident in Waco was an accident.
Thinking back to 1993 I remember what I was doing when the news came in about the siege in Waco finally being over.
I had fancied a girl at a neighbouring branch of the bank I worked in for a long time and had asked her to go on holiday with me thinking it would be the perfect opportunity to show how cool I was and get her to fall in love me. Unbelievably she agreed, I thought I was well in and I was, right up until the moment my mum was driving us to Gatwick for our flight and asked if she was required to collect us a week later. At this point my heart broke, the (I'm not gonna name her) girl said "No its okay, David (not his real name) is going to collect me" He was supposed to be her ex. They had officially split up and I was trying to become her next boyfriend.

Not the best start to a week alone together in Tenerife but I decided to hell with it, I would try and enjoy the sun and beers and worry about girls later. I bought a great book, that contained both Red Dragon & Silence Of The Lambs which I completed that week and listened to most of the 20 C90's I'd brought with me. One of the highlights was the morning stroll to collect an overpriced day old copy of The Sun. This was before t'internet and Sky Sports being available in every small bar. I needed to keep up to date with the footie and that's when I saw the headlines from April 19th.
When the week was over and it was time to leave the hotel at 9am I looked in the fridge and saw I still had 3 bottles of Bud left. Determined not to leave them behind I opened all 3 and proceeded to drink the first one waiting for the lift. No 2 for the lift down and the 3rd for the walk to the waiting bus. Perfect end to a pretty shitty week. Within the year they were married and I had to wait til 2001 before I tracked down my shell, or at least her daughter...
This song brings back some good memories, if only because it was on one of the aforementioned C-90's. Classic trashy pop. I love(d ??) it.... I think.

I saw Other Lives last summer at Village Underground in Shoreditch (awesome venue).

They played this cover of Leonard Cohen's The Partisan and I think it could be my favourite ever cover. Their style is perfect for covering Cohen tracks, and dare I say (please don't hate me) I think it's better than the original. Unfortunately I couldn't find a video from the night, but this is close enough.

I also have to admit I felt pretty cool and hip being the only person in the crowd who recognised the song and sang along. That's quite sad isn't it.

Pearl Jam - 'Last Kiss' (1998)

I was nervous, I wanted to impress but I also wanted to show off a little. I was going on holiday with my girlfriend (now wife) and her parents for the first time. We made a now customary holiday CD and had to choose 4 songs each.

My choices were Del Amitri - Just Before You Leave, Alice In Chains - No Excuses. Both of which have been previously featured on Tune Doctor. My third was David DeVant & His Spirit Child - Ginger (not my finest moment) and this song by (nearly) everyone's favourite Seattle band.
On the first couple of plays of the CD, I hadn't got the reception I'd hoped for especially from Shell Hunter. I guess it wasn't what you'd expect from Pearl Jam. But now I'm pleased to say that the song is very well received by all parties. I later discovered it was originally by Wayne Cochran in the early 60's.

I'd bought the song on a CD single which had a double A side with the song Soldier Of Love. It was a Fan Club single release and both tracks featured on a charity album called No Boundaries: A Benefit For The Kosovar Refugees.

Oh where oh where can PJ be?

The holiday had many great memories from the Chav's on board the aircraft who thought they could freestyle rap (they so couldn't) to the Pub Quiz at a bar (which will remain nameless) that ended with Old Pa saying the line "by the way, love the hair" (which I'm sure he paraphrased from Hannibal) to the bar owner as we left. Oh and not to forget the breaking of the white plastic chair. Old Pa again !!!

NERD ALERT! - In the film Singles, the members of Citizen Dick (Matt Dillon's band) were played by the guys in Pearl Jam!

Muse - 'Feeling Good' (2001)

I remember buying Muses's debut album (Showbiz) not long after starting work at Heathrow Airport and raving about it to one of "the cool kids". A certain Flycasual, I was keen to earn his acknowledgement and offered to lend him the CD with my recommendation that it was "very Radiohead".

Fast forward 10 years, and I was starting a new job which entailed 2 weeks training in Dallas (oh the hardships we must endure). I decided to see if there were any gigs on whilst I was there and saw that Muse were playing at the Dallas Cowboys stadium. I realised that despite it being a midweek gig, I had to go, but didn't fancy going alone. Once I started the job, I plucked up the courage to ask my new colleagues if any of them fancied going to the concert. I was met with "never heard of 'em" and "what kind of music do The Muse play" and the absolute worst "I prefer Westlife". Despite this last comment I still remain friends with this obvious tone deaf heathen !!! 

Alas, I didn't go to see them, which in hindsight is probably a good thing as the morning after we had a test which needed a 100% pass rate. 1 colleague from Brazil failed to get this and as a result was sent home !!! Seriously, that could have been me. I would have had to consider giving up listening to decent music as it could ruin my life and maybe bought a Westlife CD.

This is one of my favourite covers of all time (my number one is Baker Street)

It was on their second album Origins Of  Symmetry, which although I liked it, it didn't hit me as much as Showbiz did. Maybe I was expecting too much. A recent Virgin Atlantic advert use the song to great effect, reminding me how much I liked it.

Rage Against the Machine - 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' (1997)

Ah camping....mud, earwigs and chemical toilets, donning Ray Mears safari shorts, equipped with a piece of string and the ubiquitous Swiss army knife, it's chance again to be man vs wild...the great outdoors, you can't beat it can you?! I'm just after spending four nights away, doing just that in a field near Ringwood, Dorset, lovely pitches clustered around fire pits separated by dreamy grasses and wildflowers....playing football or Frisbee with my 3 year old son whilst my adoring wife looks on...the ideal. However two of those precious days away were literally dampened by lashings of incessant rain and wind, huddled together in our tent, trying to keep dry, finding innovative ways in keeping a testing toddler at bay and high level diplomacy to avoid bickering with my wife. Fantastic...

Rage Against the Machine are not going M**********G camping!!

Prior to that most inconvenient period of British Summertime weather, were two days of the best camping has to offer though. A highlight was supping wine and cooking a BBQ around a campfire until late in the evening, with pretty much the reign on the campsite as the majority of the weekend campers had departed. This also allowed my wife to wear her Primark 'snow leopard' rompasuit in confidence...all above aboard I can assure you! Despite that distraction all I could think about what was 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' and the line, "I'm sitting here in the campfire light...." and humming the tune with all the rage of a rain soaked Zach De La Rocha whilst the sausages simmered like Tom morello' guitar. Originally a classic Bruce Springsteen ballad, Rage Against the Machine do it justice with their tension fuelled cover, creating a real power house of a protest song.

Today my wife and are off to smash it up at the Chelsea Flower show, drinking Pimms* and mixing it up with the BBC Gardener's World crew. Boo-ya! A lot of the Neanderthals at my work believe that you either have to be gay, posh or be an old fart to be a gardener (one hell of a concoction if you ask me). Despite failing to meet most of those prerequisites, gardening is my passion second to music of course. Nothing better than spending the day outside sticking your trowel in the mud, trying to recreate that sub tropical paradise in the heart of Camberley. What these stooges do not realise is that it is well revered that gardening is the new Rock n' Roll. In fact Tatler magazine take it one step further stating that it is 'the new sex' as you can either partake or watch in equal measure. I'm not so sure of the latter, I can think of better ways to use my hose, especially if my man Alan Titchmarch is involved.

The Minnie Riperton classic has probably been played on every gardening show going but it still has the power to unleash the hippie flower child in me. 4hero's version was the first version I heard, though I love the original of course, 4 hero's take on 'Les Fleurs' edges it. It's still true to the original but with more emphasis on the instrumentation (I just love the double bass) and crucially for me it's longer, so a lot more petal for your metal, with a fantastic instrumental section highlighting the melody and adding to the drama of what is a beautiful song.

It's a jungle sometimes....

Unfortunately I couldn't find a suitable video to reflect what I was banging on about above, only the shorter, if somewhat more action packed video of this song. But have no fear as if you want to hear the longer version click on my Thursday I'm in Love Spotify playlist link, it's definitely worth a gold medal.

Danay Suarez, Los Aldenaos & Silvito El Libre - 'Check La Rima' (2011)

When we kicked off this blog just over a year ago, my first post wasn't on my favourite Hip Hop song that I used to grab my crotch too or my favourite rock band that I lost a shoe in the mosh pit too but on a little known but hugely talented Cuban artist called Danay Suarez. For good reason too as she's sexy, sultry and she can sing, her beautiful voice making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. But the clincher is that she's also a dope rapper (my wife will take the piss out of me for using 'dope' at my age but she really is dope), effortlessly flowing from singing to rhyming as these contrasting videos show.

Gilles Peterson's love affair with Cuba continues with his 2011 release, Havana Cultura the Search Continues (click link to visit the website), where these two tracks feature. I've had it on heavy rotation over the last couple of months and and it's a fantastically diverse compilation of all the latest sounds out of Cuba, mixing the traditional with more contemporary influences.

One of the many highlights is a version of the A Tribe Called Quest classic, 'Check the Rhime', which is given the full Cuban treatment. It's a completely different and unique take on it which is why I love it, especially the recognisable horn section, the beats and the fabulous piano break. Rhymes courtesy of Danay Suarez and Cuban rappers Los Aldeanos and Silvito el Libre.

In my last Danay Suarez post I said that if I saw her, the Mojitos would be on me but unfortunately it's unlikely I'll be taking a stroll down the Malecon any time soon. However, there's a bottle of Havana Club 15 anos with her name on it should she find herself in Camberley. Oh no, it's all above board, purely plutonic, a cultural visit if you like. My wife could show her some of her newly acquired Zumba moves and I'm almost at my free whole chicken on my Nando's loyalty card, so we'd show her a dope time fo sho!

Have you ever had a song that you hated to love or loved to hate? Or how about a song that wore you down so much, you couldn't escape it? My good friend Dave explains in extremely poetic terms that it doesn't matter whether its your favourite song or one that you loathe but it can transport you to that time and that place that you will never forget. 

A long long time ago I was in South Beach Miami the week Madonna murdered American pie. 

I stepped off the plane into the air conditioned terminal, she started singing. 

I hit the beach and the bars, in less than 12 hours I'd heard Madonna's American Pie, the single, the extended version, the rave mix, the techno mix, you get the picture. 

I met a German who sang the blues, I asked for some happy news. Two lonely Europeans in a crowded bar. Maybe I'd be happy for awhile.  

We escaped Madonna & the party scene, hung out in Cuban cafes, drank mojitos (it was still just about cool in 2000). We talked about Hemingway and Thomas Mann. 

The three men Madonna admired the most; the father, son & the holy ghost were probably at the Miami coast when me and the German kissed near by where Versace was murdered. 

I believe in rock and roll and when we fucked on the beach the music saved our mortal souls, we could hear the parties along Ocean Drive. 

In the streets the party scene screamed. 

The lovers cried and the poets dreamed.

We laughed and started singing... Bye bye Miss American Pie....

Here's a great version of the Elvis classic that randomly appeared on the iPod playlist yesterday. I hadn't heard it before as it was on one of the albums that I'd borrowed and burned but hadn't listened to. This admission becomes even more shameful as I've always liked the Eels, which is the project name of songwriter Mark Oliver Everett (or 'E'). From their early blend of melancholy and beats on beautiful freak, to his songs of broken love on end times (their's a theme here) they've always been consistent and although it's sometimes a bit dark he's had good reason to be. (His father, quantum physicist Hugh Everett III, died, his sister committed suicide and his mother died of lung cancer).

Well on that happy note, how do I follow that? All I can say is the genius of this version made me listen deeper to those 'oh-so-familiar' lyrics and think of loved ones, which in my case is the wife and the dog.

She was kind enough to remind me that I would often write nonsense in her school yearbook but that's water under the bridge now...right!? short and sweet, a perfect description of teenage life and that is just the song! Great video too, though I'm surprised there wasn't an emergency call to the Dance Police for offences 1:09 and 1:38 in the clip. Beautiful when the strings come in at the end!

Did you watch the Super bowl on Sunday night all you NFL fans, wasn't it good. Half time Madonna herself and what about that entrance?. It was a real treat and as for these Cheer Leaders well, I don't know about you but I think they should bring then over for the Queen's 60 anniversary celebrations. Come on girls! will you come over?.

I first heard  "Into the Groove(y)" in 1986, it was on a sampler CD and I thought it was a brilliant take on the  Madonna song, (which isn't too shabby either) in fact it is up there with my favourite covers of all time.

Ciccone Youth was a side project by Mike Watt and Sonic Youth. It was released in 1986. The Guys stated how they used to see Madonna all the time hanging out or performing at the NYC clubs before she became famous, but they didn't really like her style at first. Apparently Madonna dated a mutual friend. After her MTV live show they start liking her stuff and they realised her ironic pop style and all the media hoopla Madonna generated. Especially the fashion and style. Her record label wanted to sue them but Madonna stopped it from happening and gave them full clearance. Well done Madonna.

Now I know you're mine

Of course every one knows Madonna's surname, hence the name Ciccone Youth.

Some songs have the ability to make you happy, even though they are sad.  When I first heard this in the Jim Carrey & Kate Winslet film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, it was like a sniper shooting me from range! The song was originally recorded by The Korgis (1980) but has been covered by numerous artists ranging from Dream Academy to Yazz.  However, this version by Beck gets me every time.

Beck, however, still divides opinion. Many people just think of him when he was in his 'loser' phase, or during his geek-tastic 'Where it's at' stage. But he's not a one trick pony. He's always innovative and can introduce so many curve-balls to his music that it's often hard to keep up.  I, personally love everything he's done, but I really like his more acoustic, albums (such as Mutations, Sea Change).

So give it a listen, if it gets you, like it got me you'll be playing it over and over again.

Being a huge Ryan Adams fan and also a fan of metal, I love this cover! I was first alerted to this a few months ago when he played it on BBC Radio 2 (August 2011) however I hadn't seen any footage of it....but I found this a few days ago and had to "share the shred" with you.

It is great to see him playing material that he clearly loves - I've seen him a few times live and he'd often talk about his love of metal - often with some of the audience not knowing if he was taking the p&ss or not. But as you can see with this Maiden version & his recent cover of RATT's "Round & Round" (find it here on Electric Mustache) he's back in love with music - and this makes me very happy!

It's an epic return for Florence (& her machine), it supposedly references Frida Kaha and Virginia Woolf, but I haven't heard it.. I'll be dressing up like a fairy with butterfly wings next, don't know if it's due to this though - sorry, I digress....

“You Know the Night,” performed by the magnificent Jackson Browne with Rob Wasserman, is the lead single from Note of Hope, a celebration of Woody Guthrie, based on unpublished writings that the great man wrote between 1942 and 1954 while living in New York City and Brooklyn.  Browne and Wasserman wrote the music for “You Know the Night". The album version of the epic love song – which describes the evening Woody first met the woman destined to become his second wife, Marjorie Mazia – is nearly 15 minutes long while the radio edit is four minutes.  I am looking forward to that 15 minute version, in fact can't wait for the full album. Jackson Browne is up there with my all time favourite artists, check him out! A Best of will enhance any Collection.

Love Reggae? Check! Love Nirvana? Check! So this is win win! However I'm just a little unsure of it as yet as I can't help but feel that it's a bit of a novelty record. I enjoyed the Easy Star Allstars covers of Radiohead and Pink Floyd so I will crack open the Red Stripe and give this a real go.

This is taken from the forthcoming Nirvana covers album, Battle For Seattle and is to coincide with the 20th anniversary (yes I said 20) release of the classic, Nevermind. Battle For Seattle is by Reggae veteran Little Roy and produced by Brighton based roots rocka Prince Fatty, with his trademark dub sound. I'm fans of both so win win again! Hear meh kno!

'You know that I could be in love with almost everyone' and I just love Calexico and especially this great live cover of the Love classic, Alone again or. Isn't it great when one of your favourite bands covers one of your favourite songs. When the trumpets come in, I go all weak at the knees and have to lie down.

I have also included the the Love version and the Calexico original version at the end. What a treat you are in for!

Joey Burns and John Convertino were backing musicians with Giant Sand and they started a side project, Calexico which took off and surpassed Giant Sands. I just love their music, it could be described as Mexicano Alt Country. It is one of the few groups that all my family love together, no arguments when Calexico is on. A good starting point would be their album 'Feast of Wire'.
