Thursday I'm in Love, a chance for me to share my favourite Trachycarpus Fortunei!
4Hero - 'Les Fleurs' (2001)
Today my wife and are off to smash it up at the Chelsea Flower show, drinking Pimms* and mixing it up with the BBC Gardener's World crew. Boo-ya! A lot of the Neanderthals at my work believe that you either have to be gay, posh or be an old fart to be a gardener (one hell of a concoction if you ask me). Despite failing to meet most of those prerequisites, gardening is my passion second to music of course. Nothing better than spending the day outside sticking your trowel in the mud, trying to recreate that sub tropical paradise in the heart of Camberley. What these stooges do not realise is that it is well revered that gardening is the new Rock n' Roll. In fact Tatler magazine take it one step further stating that it is 'the new sex' as you can either partake or watch in equal measure. I'm not so sure of the latter, I can think of better ways to use my hose, especially if my man Alan Titchmarch is involved.
*probably not
Alan Titchmarch....he is to gardening what Muhammad Ali is to boxing |
The Minnie Riperton classic has probably been played on every gardening show going but it still has the power to unleash the hippie flower child in me. 4hero's version was the first version I heard, though I love the original of course, 4 hero's take on 'Les Fleurs' edges it. It's still true to the original but with more emphasis on the instrumentation (I just love the double bass) and crucially for me it's longer, so a lot more petal for your metal, with a fantastic instrumental section highlighting the melody and adding to the drama of what is a beautiful song.
It's a jungle sometimes.... |

Tulis commentsI have a large, steeply sloping (downwards), back garden but I really don't enjoy gardening. I think the fault definitely lies with me (lazy toe-rag). it seemed like a good idea at the time. I don't mind the heavy work but all that weeding and tending...ugh...that becomes Mrs. B's area. I did enjoy having an allotment for a couple of years when we successfully grew some nice veg, so perhaps I'm not irredeemably anti-gardenist! The track, of course, is fab. I like 4Hero a lot and adore Minnie Ripperton. Have a nice day.
ReplyEnough about where you like to stick your hose, I do like this song. Never knew what it was called either. Love the sixties feel, very Austin Powers. Oooo behave at the Flower Show!
ReplyNice track, one for lovers of the grass
ReplyOn the gardening front Madam Fifi has the green fingers. But I have to say I love the end results and maybe need more cofindence in the starting process....I love seeing a seed planted and then seeing what happens....I need a beer! But I tip my hat to you for trying to get exotica in Camberley..Come on Chelsea!
ReplyA while ago we took on a long-abandoned allotment - or football pitch sized patch with weeds up to our armpits, as I like to think of it. We initially and stupidly threw ourselves into what, in reality, is going to be a very long job of bringing the area under control and consequently knackered ourselves to the extent that we were in bed by 8.30pm and were still too shattered to continue the next day! I should say at this point that this is the first gardening i've EVER done!
ReplyWe now spend about an hour per evening pottering about over there and realise that the allotment is not going to be fully up & running until next year, but we do have a small row of radishes on the go in one of the areas that we've cleared!
I wouldn't say gardening is second in my heart to music just yet, but i'm beginning to enjoy it!
Top tune by the way!
