Blur - 'Go Out' (2015)

First of all, thank you to all who sent their best wishes for Ripley's arrival on Old Pa's Calexico post last week! Its been both the longest and shortest week ever. Living our lives in 3 hour bursts between feeds, not knowing what day it is or even caring, eating when we are hungry no matter if its 2am and feeling elation to frustration in half a second all come part and parcel with being a new parent. But we've reached our first milestone, a week! Our next big event is tomorrow where we will do the title of the latest single from Blur, Go Out. We are off to register her birth! Go Out is the first single to be released since 2003 and its like they have picked up where they dropped off. It couldn't be more Blur if it tried! The guys are older, wiser and it can only spell great things to come from new album The Magic Whip, due on April 27th. This is one happy Blur fan right here.

Muse - 'Psycho' (2015)

Shell Hunter was very much otherwise engaged as I wrote this a week ago, as she was in labour with our first child. In the background was our playlist of tracks to take her mind off of the pain from the contractions, I remembered that Muse has a track called 'New Born' so I searched for them on Spotify and was pleased to see they had a new track... It should probably come with a government warning, not to include on baby playlists, but regardless I bloody love it. Its got a trademark Muse riffage but sounds to me like the one that got away from Marilyn Manson. I can't wait for their new album based on this also!

Ryley Walker - Sweet Satisfaction (2015)

I have heard two tracks from the album Primrose Green (2015) the new album by Ryley Walker and I am really impressed. Some of the influences that he is being associated with is rather impressive, but I would say entirely justified. How about Van Morrison, Tim Buckley, Bert Jansch and Pentangle.

This really excellent stuff. I await with great anticipation for the complete album out at the end of the month.

Tobias Jesso Jr. - 'How Could You Babe' (2015)

Vancouver's Tobias Jesso Jr almost gave up music a few years back after a luckless spell in LA (the song, Hollywood takes an extra significance) and it's to everyone's benefit that he didn't. His debut album, Goon, was released earlier this month and contains a spectacular array of Lennon-esque songs on love and heartbreak. 'How Could You Girl', is my current weapon of choice to give my heart a kicking.

Laura Marling - False Hope (2015)


I am quite enjoying Laura Marling's heavier vibe, the track features on her new album, short movie, which is singers fifth album in seven years. She produced the album herself, which probably explains the change of direction. Like a hybrid of PJ Harvey meets Pearl Jam, the Hampshire born singer has now returned to England (after spending quite a bit of time in the US) and her new album is a clear reflection of that.

Koza Mostra & Agathon Iakovidis - 'Alcohol Is Free' (2013)

Some may think I am sad but I love watching Eurovision, with the terrible choreography and poor presenters who are trying their best to speak correct English. Its great telly! This year I was totally routing for these guys who are from Greece but sadly came 6th. The band coupled with old folk singer Iakovidis, were like a breath of fresh air! It was like Zorba's dance meets The Specials but dressed in kilts, fantastic! Their incredibly catchy lyrics..."Alcohol is Free!" is bound to be a big hit on the islands for those all inclusive holiday makers. Hey wait a minute! Maybe Flycasual is singing it right now!

Zion I - 'Human Being' (2013)

Sometimes, music takes hold of you and gives a "happy slap" - Human Being has done that to me! Every time I've heard it gets my feet tapping, the beat takes over, the synth bass line takes over and it evokes the same feelings of when I heard Q-Tips "Vivrant thing" or Pharrells "frontin'". However, whether or not this a good thing for everyone else remains to be seen. Tune!!

!!! - 'One Girl/One Boy' (2013)

By the time you read this (if anyone does) I shall hopefully be soaking up the sun on a beach in Greece, turquoise water lapping at my feet, feasting on olives and covering myself in Feta cheese. So desperate for sun, my mind is warped and I daydream about the video for Wham's 'Club Tropicana', while my wife is probably dreaming of a Shirley Valentine style romance! Either way we'll be making the most of it as the reliable source that is the Daily Express recently dropped the bombshell that we are heading for another washout summer, Thanks! 'One Girl / One Boy' is the perfect track for sipping cocktails in your speedos and is taken from their new album Thr!!!ler out earlier this month. I've always been a bit of a fan of the NY Disco Punk's style and this track, with it's sunny disposition, reaffirms it, slotting in very nicely on my holiday playlist.

Muse - Panic Station (2013)

Having been a fan of Muse since day dot, I was initially sceptical when they released the Olympic theme toon 'Survival' thinking they had gone mad. After a few listens however I started to get it and now I think it's brilliant.

They are about to release their 5th single from 'The 2nd Law' and it's not been without controversy. The video was filmed in Japan, and at the start they had the Rising Sun flag which caused outrage in Asia, they have subsequently apologised and re-released the video with the current Japanese flag.

The song is more mainstream for me than a lot of their recent tracks but nonetheless I'm loving it and the lyrics had me pulling my hair out as I tried to figure out what it reminded me of...... I since figured it out, can you readers ??? Answers on a postcard to the usual address.... Failing that, please feel free to comment below

Handsome Family - Frogs (2013)

Oh! I always look forward to a Handsome Family Album and this one has been  a bit of a wait. Four years in fact.  I listened through 'Wilderness'  once and two tracks hit me immediately, this one Frogs and the other Glowworm. Frogs just got the hop.

The album is a concept all about animals(indirectly)  and each track is named after a different animal. The idea comes from the dark and often  humorous mind of Rennie Sparks one half of the husband and wife duo that makes up one of my favourite bands over the past 13 years. If you ever get the chance to see them, it is a must. Their in between song banter is like eavesdropping in their front room. Hilarious.

I reckon this is their best album since my album of the year in 2000  'In the Air'.

Four tracks that got us swallowing air in excitement this week. Have you got any for us?

Flycasual:-
Mala - Noche Suenos feat Danay Suarez (2012)

Mala, a London Dubstep DJ/producer spent sometime in Cuba in 2011 recording with Cuban artists on Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura project. On his return, inspired by his experiences, he created 'Mala in Cuba', his interpretation of Cuban music, a marriage of it's traditional forms with the minimalist, often dark Dubstep sound. BBC's Paul Clarke described elements of Mala in Cuba as the soundtrack to the undiscovered Latin quarter of Blade Runner’s Los Angeles. That's an amazingly evocative description that perfectly sums it up. Noche Suenos, is a stark and atmospheric, Reggae tinged track which features the knee trembling underrated vocal talent that is Danay Suarez (who I have featured a couple of times here).

Clinic - 'Miss You' (2012)

 

This is a track from Liverpool's Clinic from the album called Free Reign (2012). It somehow reminds me of the Kink's All Day and All of the Night. On An On - 'Ghosts' (2012)

ON AN ON is result of the split of Sacred Trees, members Nate Eiesland, Alissa Ricci and Ryne Estwing decided to carry on and with the help of Producer, Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene), have recorded their debut album, Give In.

Ghosts sits within the sonic landscape of Grizzly Bear/Broken Social Scene/Beach House, and is Indie Rock at its shoegazing best!


Shell Hunter:-Muse - 'Follow Me' (2012)

I love where the Muse Journey has taken them. They started out as another indie band that sounded a bit like Radiohead (however, I was still a big fan). Now they are a massive megaband and a good example of their vast and varied style is their new single 'Follow Me' which dabbles in electro, rave and even a bit of dubstep. The real reason that I especially like this track is because once it gets going (at around the 2.12 mark) it sounds like one of my childhood faves 'The Neverending Story' by 80's jungle man Limahl. I feel like punching the air and whooping and imagine I'm soaring through the clouds on Valcor's back. I think if you even listen hard enough to the actual track, you can hear the whooshing noises as you fly through the air. It's hard not to appreciate Matt Bellamy's operatic skills too on this one and the album is definitely worth a listen. Check out their site here for full listings of their stadium tour.

Muse - 'Feeling Good' (2001)

I remember buying Muses's debut album (Showbiz) not long after starting work at Heathrow Airport and raving about it to one of "the cool kids". A certain Flycasual, I was keen to earn his acknowledgement and offered to lend him the CD with my recommendation that it was "very Radiohead". 

"Listen mate, we're not THE Muse alright"

Fast forward 10 years, and I was starting a new job which entailed 2 weeks training in Dallas (oh the hardships we must endure). I decided to see if there were any gigs on whilst I was there and saw that Muse were playing at the Dallas Cowboys stadium. I realised that despite it being a midweek gig, I had to go, but didn't fancy going alone. Once I started the job, I plucked up the courage to ask my new colleagues if any of them fancied going to the concert. I was met with "never heard of 'em" and "what kind of music do The Muse play" and the absolute worst "I prefer Westlife". Despite this last comment I still remain friends with this obvious tone deaf heathen !!! 

Alas, I didn't go to see them, which in hindsight is probably a good thing as the morning after we had a test which needed a 100% pass rate. 1 colleague from Brazil failed to get this and as a result was sent home !!! Seriously, that could have been me. I would have had to consider giving up listening to decent music as it could ruin my life and maybe bought a Westlife CD.

This is one of my favourite covers of all time (my number one is Baker Street)

It was on their second album Origins Of  Symmetry, which although I liked it, it didn't hit me as much as Showbiz did. Maybe I was expecting too much. A recent Virgin Atlantic advert use the song to great effect, reminding me how much I liked it.

MUSE - 'Super Massive Black Hole' (2006)

What on earth is Muse doing on Saturday Night Jukebox! I hear you say? Normally I would put them under Give Me A Guitar! but this single was truly different to anything they'd done. It's got a bit more of an electronic edge and you can definitely dance to it. I've followed Muse on their musical journey and they are responsible for a good few of my favourite tracks, including one of my favourite covers, 'Feeling Good'. A colleague of mine was shocked that there was no Muse on our site so here you go!

"When I'm Cleaning Windows!"

When ever I hear this track now, it instantly reminds me of the aggressive and passionate Paso Doble, my favourite of all the Latin American dances. It does seem a distant connection to make but as with most ladies, Saturday evenings in the latter part of the year is devoted to Strictly Come Dancing. There is no shame in this! Having tried a Latin American dancing class, I can appreciate the skill, stamina and training required to make it look good (something I failed on!). I also think getting a routine to fit in with modern music is pretty tough. Here is the fine example I won't ever forget. One for you ladies! I'm sorry guys, but you should look away now!
